Yes, this is true but unnecessary considering the weight of the rider and his equipment.

I might decide to keep a scroll or two on hand for a long wilderness excursion as then I can have him saddled up as well.

Clearly the Mauler familiar is geared to be in its Battle Form most of the time. :)

Nope.

If you don’t find something, we will run it as a specialized Enlarge Person that you can use 3 times per day. Each would last 1 min per level, so 3 minutes.

The rules about Mauler familiar were written in Familiar Folio and then clarified a few years latter in Ultimate Wilderness. Clearly if there was a time limit on the transformation it would have been mentioned or at the very least clarified in the numerous editions of the Campaign Clarifications or FAQs. It was not. The RAW stands crystal clear in this regard. There is no fixed time limit.

A Foul Breed

In my mind, that interpretation isn’t balanced.

I do not find RAW particularly convincing as a way to arbitrate the rules. Such arguments are unlikely to sway me.

This is in Campaign Mode, so I can make my own judgement on what the rules will be.

Convince me that your interpretation is balanced, suggest a different time limit, or accept the time limit I listed.

It was clearly the intent for the Mauler to be in Battle Form most of the time so the familiar can participate fully in battle. The duration of the Enlarge Person spell is not appropriate in my mind as fitting the spirit of the archetype.

Looking towards a compromise I suggest the following:

If you feel the need to limit the transformation further (it was already reduced from unlimited uses to 3/day in the transition from the Familiar Folio to Ultimate Wilderness) then we should look to the Druid and Wild Shape. How about a maximum of 1 hour/level (so 3 hours) per transformation?

A Foul Breed

If I look at Druid Wild Shape, I see a major class feature that doesn’t come in until 4th level and only allows the transformation once a day at that level.

I do not find that a reasonable comparison.

This is true but all the familiar can do is change back and forth to medium size. It is not at all comparable to Wild Shape which grants it extra abilities, forms, etc. In effect allowing it to change back in forth is a ribbon ability instead of just saying that it stays in medium size all the time. This is especially true with a Tattoo familiar which can disappear completely on the caster's body.

I do think that 1 hour/level (per transformation) is a reasonable compromise considering how scaled down the power is.

A Foul Breed

The normal adventuring day is generally approximately 8 hours.

The familair can do the Battle Form transformation three times a day. The ability clearly spells that out.

I do not find a limit of a total of nine hours a day in Battle Form a meaningful limit.

My suggestion was based on a first level transmutation spell that does something similar to the Battle Form supernatural ability. You are taking the duration of something that is a major class feature at a higher level and has less uses a day.

I believe we have a big difference in what we consider reasonable and balanced.

Relgar wrote:

I notice you listed the familiar’s Stealth modifier on their sheet. This indicates to me you are welll aware of the advantages a tiny creature can have in scouting. Shifting between size tiny to scout and medium to fight is a huge deal.

Yes.

You could have done sylvan wildblooded sorcerer and gotten a Roc animal companion. It would have the same 13 strength.

I don’t feel the need to quibble the details of the trade offs, the familair always being size medium when out is close enough for me.

@Relgar

How do you have +12 Init?

I see you have Noble Scion trait allowing you to use Charisma (+5) instead of Dexterity (+1) for Initiative. I also see you have Reactionary trait for an additional +1.

Your other feat is Additional Traits.

That gives a +6 Init, where is the other +6 coming from?

Alright here is the breakdown.

Reactionary - always a +2 bonus.

Noble Scion - +5 bonus

Cracked Ioun Stone - +1 bonus

Familiar granted ability which still works in tattoo form due to the archetype - +4 bonus

+12 total for initiative.

Actually with Blood Boiling Pills and Heightened Awareness I can have him easily cranked up to +18 but this is not his style as he is not a complete try hard.

Furen have this ability she would like to use with her teammates:
Caravan Bond (Su): By leading a group prayer for 1 minute, a Varisian pilgrim can select a number of traveling companions equal to her cleric level + her Wisdom bonus. She may use her domain-granted powers on any of these traveling companions as if they were her. She can use these abilities on her traveling companions at a range of up to 30 feet, even if the ability normally requires her touch.

The idea is that she can use Bit of Luck (roll twice take better on all d20 for 1 round) and Agile Feet (ignore all difficult terrain for 1 round) at range to her teammates. She should be able to include everyone since she can include 2 lvl +4 WIS=6 people. Is anyone oppose to being included in Furen's caravan bond? It is easier if you just list your spells in your profile. You can use the strike out BBCode to indicate when they are used. That would be the letter S between square brackets [] and then /s in square brackets to end it.

Got to go, but if you have questions I will be able to help you later tonight.

I have added two new links to this campaign, you should be able to see them at the top of the page.

Please use the RPG Chronicles link to sign in. Assuming they add support for this module before the end of it, I will be using that to generate chronicles. If you have any questions about it, ask here.

The level should be the level of the actual character receiving credit.

The other link is a Google Doc file that I’ve put the map, map legend, and a section for player notes. I will allow the group to figure out what they want in player’s notes. I have only given the very general information that the mayor would have given.

A Foul Breed

How are people feeling about the pace of this adventure?

Am I going fast enough for everyone? Am I waiting too long for people to respond, or should I wait longer so more people have an opportunity to respond?

Feedback appreciated.

On a different topic, Relgar and Mallycorn if you could please sign in on RPGChronicles? You don’t need an account to sign in.

The information will only be used for generating and sending the chronicles.

Thanks,

As we are only speaking to relatively unimportant NPCs I feel a brisker pace is warranted. It is mostly RP to move the plot along so if a character does not get to speak to every NPC fully I am fine with that. Just my thoughts. :)

I can do it as a Google drive folder instead. It is only slightly more effort for me.

Please fill in at least the character name, Org Play #, Character #, level and faction. I believe that is the minimum information that is required.

Responding to this separately.

Usually I don’t worry about every character talking to an NPC. I want people to have an opportunity to do so, but try not to hold up the game because someone hasn’t posted.

If someone comes in late, I don’t mind if they go back to add their part to a conversation provided it doesn’t cause me to have to rewind history. I don’t like to retcon things. I do it when I feel it is warranted, but strongly try to avoid it.

Alcie is a little bit of a special case as she specifically wants each character’s name and profession before she will even agree to serving them. I didn’t have her ask for profession but felt her insisting on getting a name seemed appropriate.

I take it from your statement Relgar that I should not hold up the game just because your character hasn’t responded in role play. I do expect you to be part of the group but am not going to force people to role play. That generally doesn’t work well for either side.

I will not be skipping the role play. I also will not be announcing how important an NPC is.

Pacing is fine with me. How do you know an NPC is "relatively unimportant" until the PCs engage with them and find out what they know?
What Alcie provided the PCs doesn't seem "unimportant" to me.

Perhaps I did not phrase it properly. What I meant is that while RP is enjoyable the consequences for a player not engaging in RP is generally not fatal to the character as opposed to combat where the character can die.

In this particular case the tavern owner was rude and unfriendly and this turned my character off. If I (personally) entered this tavern and was treated like this I would immediately leave. When I realised as a player that this event was important to moving the plot forward for the party I forced my character to return and try to help.

Thanks GM Bret for offering to dump it to Google Drive and to provide a link. It is much appreciated. I have entered the required info. :)

@Gaius - What you are saying is quite true. From Relgar's perspective she is not important but clearly we need her information to move our mission forward so she is very important. :)

The current pace is fine with me and I am enjoying the roleplaying, even if John doesn't always have much to contribute. I've also been dealing with a few heavier demands IRL that have kept me from posting as often as I may have planned and, thus, appreciate not getting left behind.

That being said, the pace for this table does, at least, feel slower than most others I am currently playing. Granted, as convention tables have a set "deadline", they do tend to move more quickly.

Again, I am fine with the pace, but recognize that players may well be used to and prefer a quicker place. If quicker is needed to maintain engagement by all the players, then I am all for it.

I do not force the person who starts a conversation to do all the social skill checks. It is fine to speak with the NPCs, that is part of the game.

If a skill check is required, you could always say your piece and do it as an Aid Another. Then the person who has the skill can step in and do something like “What my colleague is trying to explain is…” and then do some roleplay and the skill check. One of the nice things about PF1 is there is no risk in attempting to aid another character.

I don’t want people to feel like they can’t talk to the NPCs just because they don’t have the best of social skills. There are times when a skill check is required, but I will inform you of those.

I prefer to keep gameplay for in character and game mechanical things. If the whole post is OOC, it would be better here.

With the GM's permission I'd like to take a table vote. I was hoping to show Father Ruvarra the note we received from Alcie and ask him about the relationship between the apprentices.
