It is miserably appropriate that a light rain should fall as a small and rather rag-tag group of people approach their final destination. The single winding route they has been following from Kintargo into Ravounel's hinterlands has been difficult, boggy and rutted as it passes through terrain that looks more like something from the Boneyard than part of a young and vibrant nation recently freed from the shackles of tyranny.

All in all the rain, light but freezing cold and possessed of a strange ability to penetrate even the most carefully waterproofed cloak, is simply the crowing jewel in a miserable week. The journey however appears to be at an end as a salt breeze parts the grey clouds above and reveals a small, dilapidated town near the cliffs - the long-abandoned settlement of Crooked Cove and, standing on a small buff above it, a large and imposing manor house and Eliza’s new home, Xarwin Manor.

The village, or what remains of it, is completely deserted as you pass through towards the manor house. The buildings are still of reasonably sturdy construction and seem to have been deliberately abandoned as there is no sign of anything easily portable left behind. There are however a number of beds, tables and even a rough bath to be found although water remains a problem. Still, the village is not the target of this expedition. That lies at the end of an overgrown road, crowned by pair of rusty wrought-iron gates flanked by two stone pillars.

Beyond, the faint lights illuminate a large clearing of tall, dry grass, at the center of which looms Xarwin Manor. The building’s roofline rises in the middle to a third level surrounded by a walkway, while the closed dome of what appears to be an observatory rises above. Slate shingles cover the steeply-slanted roofs below this central dome with more rusty ironwork adorning its eaves. The paint along the manor’s wooden walls has mostly peeled away, leaving behind a weathered building clad in creeping vines that looks like forgotten by the world. Even at a distance, the building’s facade seems unusually moist, as if it had just weathered torrential downpour despite the dryness of the surrounding grounds.

Perception DC15:
You notice huge numbers of birds, whippoorwills you think, perched on the manor's roof.

If someone points them out then everyone can roll the checks below.
DC15 Nature

Spoiler:
This behavior is very unusual for these birds.

DC25 Religion/DC15 Psychopomp Lore

Spoiler:
Whippoorwills are associated with psychopomps, death, and the faith of Pharasma, and the sheer number of them suggests that one or more unquiet spirits might linger within the manor.

Miya marches onward with her new traveling companions, still working on getting acquainted with them. Throughout the week she's kept a fair positive attitude, despite the weather which had been working against them.

As the village comes into sight, she frowns and says rather glumly "Everyone gone. Not bad sign."

The champion could speak and understand the common tongue, though it was not her first language. She speaks with heavy accent and is constantly working on improving her vocabulary and fixing mistakes as she says them.

"No. Mean not good sign. Is bad sign. Right?"

While Miyasaki is not especially tall, she has the strength of several men. All week she's insisted in marching in her jade and gold colored armor, refusing to dress down except for when it was time to sleep. "Never know when they come." she would say, insisting they stay on the ready.

You would think with a helmet on, your hair would stay dry. Yet nature finds a way to get at you and thus she wipes the damp black hair from her eyes as she surveys the area. Miya points out the plentiful number of birds nearby. "Look. Many birds." She studies them, but these are not creatures she is familiar with.

Giving up on her heavy, but useless, ruby cloak hood, Eliza lets out a sigh as she examines the sight in front of her.

"You're certainly correct Miyasaki." Eliza nods, her voice full of praise for her companion. "The word you are likely looking for is that it is an ominous sign; a sign of foreboding or even, a sign of portents."

As the birds are pointe out, Eliza cocks her head slightly, "At first glance, it looks as if everybody has abandoned this village apart from the birds. I am not certain what these specific birds are or what they foretell, but historically birds are never a good omen. Having studied this for many years, it is always clear that a white bird flying against a window at night foretells death in the house within a year. A person seeing six crows or seeing two turtle doves together in a tree also signs death."

Eliza pulls out the letter she received from her inside pocket and shields it from the rain with her other cloaked arm. "Nothing in the letter stated there would be anything unnatural or untoward in the area."

Alexi doffs the hood of her cloak, the dampness from the rain causing her long, blue-black hair to cling to her head and her ash-gray cheeks. She peers at the distant manor.

"They are whippoorwills. The favored bird of my goddess, Pharasma. They are often associated with psychopomps and spirits. The sheer number of them suggests that one or more unquiet spirits may dwell within this place."

She feels a bit of pressure behind her temples, a sign that her sister has something to say. Alexi closes her eyes and concentrates, causing a glowing sigil to appear above her heart. A few moments later, the spectral form of Cathyriel appears beside her, sporting a matching sigil. The slim, dark-haired phantom puts her hands on her hips as she looks at Alexi with irritation.

"Of course there are spirits here. Why else would the Lady deign to send you here, if not to put some ornery undead to rest? "

Alexi sighs. "Indeed. The Lady's work is never done." She touches the sigil over her heart, and Cathyriel fades away once more. The duskwalker holds her holy symbol at the ready and adjusts the position of her swordbelt as she prepares to proceed.

"Sign of poor tents." Miya repeats to her softly, trying to memorize the phrase.

Cathyriel's words seem to reinforce something in Miya, as she nods to the statement and surveys the area once more.

"Then we must go." she declares, continuing forward towards the manor.

Eliza's Letter:
Dear Madame Yarrow.

After much research the Court of Records, Appeals and Inheritances has determined that you are the last living relative of Paracount Ioseff Xarwin (died 4657 [presumed]). As such you inherit the following properties and titles.

Title: Paracountess of Cheliax (lapsed due to secession from Cheliax).
Title: Lady of Ilverness (lapsed due to secession from Cheliax)
Title: Thirteenth Handmaiden to the Queen's Most Infernal Majesty (lapsed due to secession from Cheliax).
Property: Arvanxi Townhouse, Ergoran. (Title is dispute. Attempt to claim not advised).
Property: Xarwin Manor, Ravounel.

Our congratulations on your inheritance. These documents form your legal title to the above mentioned properties, as recognised by the nation of Ravounel and Lady Mayor Jhaltero. Any attempt to use these documents to pursue claims in Cheliax is not advised.

Sincere regards.
Lorcan, First Secretary of the Court of Records.

P.S. Since Xarwin Manor has not been visited (according to our records) for over sixty years, there are significant outstanding taxes owing on the property. As such it cannot be sold or otherwise deposed of until all outstanding dues have been paid. However any items remaining in the property in question may be disposed of at the owners discretion.

Any information regarding the disappearance of Paracount Xarwin would be appreciated by the Hall of Records and may be accepted in lieu of outstanding taxes.

One part of investigating Xarwin Manor is conducting research on various topics linked to the house itself. So far you are able to research the following: Ioseff Xarwin, Xarwin Manor.

"It's 'portents', not 'poor ... tents'," Tadia says with a roll of her eyes and a look of annoyance.

Although the look of annoyance has been a fixture on the blonde girl's face since you all set out on this journey. While her father's instructions were clear, 'assist the Lady Yarrow in whatever manner was required', that didn't mean that she was happy about it. One would think that being the daughter of an incredibly admired singer would exclude one from having to traipse leagues out into the middle of nowhere, but apparently not.

"And of course there are unquiet spirits here," she says with a wave of a delicately manicured hand. "Can't you feel them?"

She attempts to wring some of the water out of her travelling dress. "Now can we go inside and get out of this thrice-cursed rain?"

"Getting out of this rain would indeed be welcome, however I fear it may take a few hours to dry."

With few other choices the group presses on into the manors grounds, despite not knowing anything about the manor or its former owner. The gate itself opens easily, despite a patina of rust and the stone columns on either side being covered in mold. It's almost as though the manor itself is welcoming you home...

Eliza's keen eye notes a coat of arms on the gate, a series of overlapping circles, rings and stars.

DC 20 Nature:
The coat of arms appears to be a stylised cosmological map of Golarion's solar system.

A short way beyond the gate the overgrown path splits into a crossroads. To the north, the path leads to the manor’s front door, while to the east, it curls around the manor’s side. To the west, the path leads toward a collapsed building and an algae-choked pond before winding around the manor as well. The rotting trunk of a fallen oak tree lies across the crossroads, almost as if forming a barrier to those who would approach the manor—or perhaps to keep something within from traveling out.

DC 15 Perception:
The fallen tree's bark seems to flex and pulse oddly as you watch. There's probably something alive in there, and unlikely to be friendly.

Tadia only just avoids stomping her foot in frustration. But as she assumes that Alexi will join the others, she tugs her soaked cloak tighter around herself and follows along in a pout.

A skittering of insects emerging from the log has nothing to do with the fact that Tadia catches up rather quickly with the rest of the group...

A winding trail, once perhaps a neat gravel path but now just a slightly less overgrown swath of dry grass, leads down to this roughly oval-shaped pool. Thick patches of reeds grow on the pool’s shores, and the water looks opaque with sheets of algae and lily pads, yet there’s no sign of insect or amphibian life. Near the pool’s center stands a five-foot-wide, mossy stone platform supporting a rusty iron sphere measuring about three feet across. Rotting wood pilings jut out from the water between this platform and the west shore, suggesting a footbridge might have once allowed access to the platform from land.

DC15 Nature/Society:
The sphere seems to have once represented Soma, Golarion's moon. That means that the pond was once a 'star pond', a landscaping technique favored by astronomers and gardeners alike. Placing a light source within the sphere would have once created shadowy maps of constellations.

"Actually, this is a specimen of the Gibbering mouther." Eliza shares in response. "My theory is that these are some twisted aberrations that were once very greedy souls who wanted to consume all the possessions, joy and happiness of others and thus ended up so twisted."

She shuffles on the spot uncomfortably for a moment. "Really, we do need to get rid of the creature, there is nothing pleasant about these endlessly devouring creatures and this place needs to become habitable. The bad news is that the thing spits some sort of acid that can blind you at quite a distance, and don't walk in its tracks, as it partly dissolves the ground behind it. I've heard that it is pretty slow on the ground, but can swim at very impressive speeds. The good news is that it seems to not be very aggressive... and also seems to be trying to communicate" Eliza's voice trails off in seeming confusion at this particular fact.

Tadia retreats and then pulls two fists full of mud out of the ground. One gets hurled back towards the mouther. It strikes the mouther full in one of its many face. The other is even better aimed and strikes Eliza full in the face!
