Seeing the projected prankster and the flickering, float flasher, Sir Feighnswelle springs into action, flopping towards the projector.

"Lights out!" he cries as he brings a tusk to bear against the menacing machine.

Ysh'yaal thinks this is some kind of glitching, living hologram. And therefore a construct, but only enough to just barely ID it. With a quick spell the technomancer prepares for a fight!

Sir Feighnswelle cracks the projector's case with a light hit of the tusk!

It's a bit close to line up the scope, though...

Zoey misses by a fair bit as her shot thankfully doesn't hit any bystanders.

The projector keeps the hologram going, and the hologram seems quite corporeal. The projector sends it at Sir Feighnswelle and ALSO launches a firework at him!

Ysh looks about... and comes to the conclusion that someone who had NO IDEA what they were doing tried to jury rig the projector with some recovered tech, mainly a diffuse hardlight hand wrap with tactical tetrad rings! Whoever tried this clearly had no idea what they were working with. Thankfully the items seem to still function on their own.

Another week passes. During this time, the Lorespire Complex hosts a concert, two vidgame competitions, and numerous special courses, including a self-defense class hosted by former First Seeker Jadnura.

The morning after, you get pinged on your comms. It's from Camellia

You may know about this holiday already:

Culture DC 16:

Reunion is an Akitonian holiday that developed in the first century AG in response to the thasteron bust, poverty, and mass emigration. The holiday promotes generosity and kinship despite economic difficulties and great distances. Traditions include sending a message to distant family and friends, then gathering to enjoy a meal with close friends and family. Traditionally, Reunion Day meals were prepared with cheap ingredients, ingenuity, and lots of love—resulting in outrageous dishes many Akitonians keep on the menu for ironic or nostalgic reasons.

A moment after you finish reading, tickets show up in your inbox. you've got a chartered shuttle that leaves later that day.

You're traveling to Akiton, but there's time to shop if need be.

You travel to Akiton via the chartered shuttle. From there, it’s a short overland trip to the Cembar homestead, located a few miles south of the Winterlands. The temperature is well below freezing, but your transportation is warm, and the journey is without incident.

The Cembar home appears tiny, but most of the building is below ground, protected from the frigid wind and kept warm by a powerful heating system.

The sounds of a gathering are audible from outside.

She whips out her datapad and spends a surprisingly short amount of time typing what can be at most a single message.

Message:

Ya! Momoring! They're sending us to Akiton for Reunion. So cool! I've never actually been to Akiton for Reunion, I hope it's like you've always told me. How is your secret mission? Try to be nice to the onboard computer... Onny, fighting!

She is very excited, though, even by Zoey standards Oooh, I wish Onny was here. She loves cabbage-on-a-stick. And brick mush salad. And leftovers-of-the-leftovers stew in a decorated shape. And red porridge. Have you ever had red porridge?

The door opens with verve. The party is greeted by a pair of wildly colored skittermanders who immediately introduce each other as Olive and Violet. (Confusingly Olive is purple and Violet is green... or so you think, they're talking very quickly.

With a shout they bring over the head of the house, an apron-clad shobhad named Alora.

Alora gives you a tour of the homestead and introduces her family. In the living room, Olive and Violet watch over six young ysoki—Bitts, Flutter, Grubby, Popper, Scamp, and Slicer—who fight over whose turn it is to play “Junk Race Jitters,” a popular two-player racing vidgame. In the dining room, three hykli—Becca, Cass, and Orence—bicker over how to properly set the table. Lastly, the half-elf Agner naps in the den, their pet squoxes Musa and Gator curled at their feet.

When the tour reches the kitchen, Alora shuts the door, which does little to drown out the yelling. She releases a deep breath as she struggles to retain her composure. “Well, that’s my family. The Cembars might be odd, but we chose each other, and I love them dearly. Right now, though, we’re falling apart. We lost granny earlier this year, and things have been rough ever since. Granny was the glue that held us together. Since she passed away, we’ve been lost. This is the first time we’ve all been together since the funeral. I thought Reunion would bring us together, but it’s pulling us apart. They’re all so determined to make today perfect in honor of Granny—to do everything exactly the way she would’ve done. So here I am, in an apron, with no idea what to do!”

Alora sniffs at the air. “Smells like smoke,” she remarks. Her eyes widen, and she dashes to the oven, removing a baking sheet covered in an unidentifiable charred lump. Alora’s lip quivers, then she screams, tossing the ruined meal into the sink. “I quit! I can’t focus with them bickering, and this is hard enough on its own!”

She's clearly overwhelmed and could use some calming via social skills (with rolls.)

Zoey moves around the house, brightly waving at everybody Hello Everybody, I'm bright and sparkly Zoey... but you may call me Pink if you prefer! she says with a friendly bow. ...oh, oh, grab the bonus... she remarks of the racing game, and she knows better than to get involved between bickering siblings.

----

Ah Auntiee.... Zoey looks a bit distraught, and at a size disadvantage next to the shobhad... You must miss your Granny a lot.... Auntie Mool Zima...

Akitonian:

Don't cry. Her accent is ridiculous, she doesn't sound like a local at all.

Zoey silently hopes Alora doesn't watch any of Zo's shows, because of the atrocious cooking she once displayed there. 'in an apron with no idea what to do' sounds quite familiar to Zoey.

You've totally nailed the best part of Reunion: you are all together again. And they're even some new friends... and we are all here to help. Everything is going to be fine. she says while trying to radiate as bright a smile as she can, Gensha koya.

What was your dear Granny like? she then adds, How was Reunion with her?

Zoey's exuberant introduction is extremely well received. Once calm, Alora explains she was given “the privilege" of preparing dinner, recreating Granny’s recipe of roast arabuk stuffed with stone-stored apelos, served on a bed of sticky rice and topped with gravy." Her attempt is the charred disaster before you.

Alora takes stock of the remaining ingredients in the house, discovering she’s out of arabuk. "Would you PLEASE go arabuk hunting? Oh, and while you’re out, if you can find some winter herbs to improve the taste, I’d appreciate it. Here, take these." She hands you an advanced shobhad horizon striker and a veteran shobhad harness.

"I'd suggest trying to dine on a plate of choice molluscs or sea cucumber, if you are looking for a more festive mood, but if you think this 'arabuk' is necessary, well? I, for one, am always up for a time of good sport!" declares Sir Feighnswelle.

"Excellent!" The shove you get out the door is one only a four-armed mother could muster.

Outside, the sun is setting, making it dim light and extreme cold.

Looking for Arabuk tracks is a Perception OR Survival roll.

So if we're out in the cold, can you tell me whether Zoey was able to buy that parka?

Oh, wow, Zoey says as she is handed the bulky sniper gun family heirloom?

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

Zoey has the sniper weapon proficiency. so all we lack is a helicopter.

Yes, she could buy a parka. I should note that so long as you are wearing armor and it's not archaic, you're also protected from Extreme Cold.

Truly, at home, in her element, Zoey immediately picks up a trail. She follows it to an icy pond. Ahead everyone spies a trio of yearlings that will do nicely. They don't seem to notice, so you might be able to get pretty close.

"The air seems quite comfortable, if you ask me. Refreshing, actually," notes Sir Feighnswelle. "Could use a bit of salt, though."

The morlamaw artfully slides along the ice and snow covered landscape. Spying the trio ahead, he pauses. "Haven't hunted this sort of landbeast before. Their racks look impressive, likely akin to facing a bull morlamaw, I'd suppose."

"Shall we sneak up on them? Get up close and personal?" he proposes, brandishing a meaty flipper-fist. "Or simply shoot them from afar? Do we need all three or some one or more for next year's hunt?"

"I bet if I could find a good opening and slip into that pond, I'd catch them quite readily... from below!" he suggests.
