"Oh, you are right, we still have to deliver the borrowed key" Lope smiles quickly following Cyrene's reasoning "Let's just do that"

Unless someone opposes, Lope will go with Cyrene to give back the key to Factor 12. As a good merchant trained on his family's business, he will not lose the opportunity to get some value out of the exchange and points what he thinks is the most expensive objects the Inevitable has to offer.

Lope returns to Factor 12's room and the little inevitable says, "Back already are you? Returning the key I see, very good."

Lope asks to see all the other items and after some argument he manages to persuade Factor to show them, very grudgingly, "I must say this is all highly irregular..."

The wand, battleaxe, breastplate and boots are all enchanted. Of these Lope suspects the boots are worth the most gold.

Wand: Spellcraft DC 18:
The wand is a wand of remove disease with only 5 changes left.

Battleaxe: Spellcraft DC 18:
The battleaxe is a +1 battleaxe.

Breastplate: Spellcraft DC 18:
The breastplate is a +1 breastplate.

Boots: Spellcraft DC 20:
The boots are boots of elven kind.

I think the item you want to 'borrow' is kind of subjective, so I'll leave it up to you. Is anyone guarding the door you unlocked?

Cyrene waves the rest of the group away, having no intention of spending any more time with the kill-joy that is Factor 12. Instead she takes up position beside the doors, out of sight to anyone who opens them and waits patiently. Her work is all about patience - getting the target into just the right place. Even better if they come to her.

Even Malphene and Val stop registering to the demon - she smiles if they seek her attention but it is clear that she has entered a state of intense focus, waiting... and watching.

Cyrene stays to guard the door.

Julia takes a good second or two to examine the boots on display, admiring them greatly, especially their leathery smell which was a great deal more pleasant than the rest of the air in this place. "Oh these look are wonderful. I've hadn't seen a pair this fine since that boutique in Westpark. I should take some of you there one day... if we ever get out of here... and after we deal with the madness going on the surface."

The bard contemplates taking the boots right then and there but thinks better of it once she notices the wand. Gods only know what sort of nastiness awaits them next and having some extra magic would likely do them a lot of good. "So which will it be? The plate, the axe, the wand, or the boots?"

"These are indeed of best quality, elven quality in fact" he hands the boots back to Julia after the inspection.

And once at the door... "I guess that was time enough, isn't it?" he opens it after everyone has had time to prepare. He casts another dancing lights and sends them into the the room for everyone to see inside.

"Well if no else wants to take anything..." Julia swipes the pair of boots and writes her older alter egos name. Trying them on she discovers that they fit her just perfectly, which puts a rather large smile on her face. If nothing else it meat she had one good memory of being down in this place now.

Afterwards, Julia would join the others at the door and once again mentally prepare herself for whatever was on the other side.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Factor 12 seemed skeptical when Julia writes a name down she hadn't used in quite some time, but it didn't seem certain enough to say anything. So with a pair of expensive new boots Julia walked out of the room victorious.

Cyrene:
While you were watching you distinctly heard the sound of scratching from the other side of the door. It shuddered a couple of times but didn't open. The door looks heavy, so perhaps whatever was is on the other side was unable to open it...

I assume it's time to breach the door, how will you proceed?

"We're dealing with something capable of scratching and fairly small." Cyrene says when the others return. "I heard it scratching on the other side of the door but it didn't seem strong enough to actually push the doors apart. We're definitely dealing with a spellcaster here."

Using her position to the side of the door Cyrene takes the handle and then, when everyone else is ready, pulls the door open so that Lope can send his lights through and she is safely to one side and out of the way!

She was much more pleased with this one and closed her book, put away her supplies, and heard what Triphylla and Cyrene were saying. Unfortunately the others returned before she could add anything and they were ready to storm through the door and deal with what was on the other side.

Valeria was ready to go in and had the perfect spell ready to use if they could now see their enemy.

The group of nobles follow the party at a distance, curious to see what could possibly have been behind a dual custody lock. Cyrene was too busy for Malphene as as a result she was sulking at the back, pacing about like a caged animal. Meanwhile Valaria puts the finishing touches to a truly excellent sketch of Cyrene.

The party make ready to breech the room and makes last minute whispered discussions.
Scuttling things: Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 <--- PASS

Cyrene opens the door revealing wide stairs which descend into a large tiered, circular chamber. Chairs stand in odd positions throughout the room, collected into circular patterns, even outside of the greater circular patterns of the hall itself. Circular gouges mar the surface of the wooden walls and floor here, some left to stand alone, while others are multiple circular scratches overlaying one another, joined by lines and scrawlings. The greatest concentration of circles gathers on the ceiling, some forty feet above, where multicolored circles inscribed with artistic fanaticism surround a five-foot-wide hole in the ceiling.

Kn: History DC 16:
This area once served as a lecture hall hosting academic talks, spirited debates, and occasional classes for highborn children.

After reading his book you also know that long after the the archives were forgotten, the chamber found some use by the now long-dead Senator Eros Glendower in his arcane experiments to grant himself eternal life. You speculate that he utterly failed attempt at immortality - but horribly a shard of his intellect passed to his familiar, the dire rat Dagio.

Each tier stands 5 feet lower than the previous, granting every seat an excellent view of the speaker’s platform in the chamber’s center. The crumbling stone and plaster walls of the lecture hall offer myriad handholds, offering a somewhat easy climb if you wished to for some reason.

Perception DC 20:
There's something off with the wall in the tallest tier at the southeastern edge of the room... Could there be a secret door?

As you burst in you spot a large and unusual looking rat dart up the walls, which much to your surprise scalds you in archaic taldane, "How dare you interrupt the Hierophant of the Arc, the Archduke of Tangencies, the Beginning and the End! You distract me from my vital research into the will of the circles and for that you shall die!"

The dire rat which you assume is male makes a sort of high pitch squeaking sound which is responded to by a cacophony of of squeaks from all round the room as swarms of rats boil out of the woodwork! He then shoots up the wall to watch you deal with the swarms...

Initiative rolls:

Cyrene: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Julia: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Lope: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

Dagio: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Rat swarms: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

It wouldn't be book 1 of an AP without a swarm. I've been playing A Plague Tale Requiem so this particular encounter seems very poignant for me!

I had put this in Discussion when we were developing how we addressed the door initally: "With additional time to buff Triphylla will consume a Heightened Awareness extract, to be dismissed for the +4 to Initiative, and then also her Shield extract." And also, unless it took the others 20 minutes to get the boots Triphylla's mutagen is still active. +4 Init give Triphylla an 11 and ahead of the rats. I'll wait for GM to rule on this before posting an action.

Valeria saw the giant rat...the giant rat that talked, and then heard the swarm of rats coming for them. She Valeria talked big in the past of being hard to scare after what she had endured, and this was true, but there was one thing she didn't mention...she was terrified of rats! When she heard the mass squealing and the ruckus of so many fury feet coming for them, she completely forgot about what she had planned to do and instead screamed!

The moment Julia sees the rat swarm, and worse yet its apparent talking leader, she was to will herself not gag. "Why did it have to be rats, she says with obvious disgust. Suffice to say the bard had little love for the small beady eyed creatures and would like nothing more than to be far, far away from them.

Despite that disgust and her struggle with her gag reflex, Julia still manages to power through and start singing an aspirational and especially appropriate ballad of how an enchanted prince made of wood managed to overcome a tyrannical rat king.

@all I've moved most of you inside.

Pelligrina chants the words to a defensive spell and with the last syllable the spectral image of a steel breastplate glows for a few moments before fading away. Satisfied she pulls out a vial of acid from her bag.

Lope steps into the room and tries to reason with the dire rat but Diego dismisses his words, "Too late long-shanks, The marquis of circularity has spoken!"

Lope:
You apparently have been tutored about all sorts of unsavory opponents. You know basically know everything here. In particular you know that slashing and piercing attacks are not particularly effective against a swarm of tiny creatures.

Julia starts a song about overcoming a rat king which Diego does not appreciate, he chitters loudly, "Stop that terrible song!"

Quite understandably Valaria freaks out a bit when she sees the rats swarming out and she looks for somewhere high to climb but her only option is the walls. The central part of the room is sunken, so there really isn't anywhere high to go. Let me know if you want to try and climb up.

The rat swarms approach Triphylla and Lope but don't quite get there...

Though her body has taken the visage of an animal ready to charge, this enemy requires a different tactic. The swarms are not to be trifled with, and everyone knows rats carry disease. But even she on her small legs is faster than the swarm, and if she can lure the rats away the nobles can get past.

Assuming this is the way out.

"Come get me, little beasties!"

Move and ready a flask of alchemists fire.

Ah yeah those swarms have reach of zero, so Cyrene can totally do that without provoking... One thing Cyrene the talking rat has climbed most of the way up the wall, you'd need to follow it to get into melee range or attack from range.

The big talking rat sneered at Cyrene, "You are not one with the circle!" He murmured an arcane word and summoned a vaguely arrow shaped blob of liquid in his paw which shot off in the general direction of Cyrene. However shooting in the general direction was a far cry from hitting and the noxious liquid missed her by several feet causing the ground near by to bubble and hiss.

"Use bludgeoning weapons or fire if you have, it is more effective!" Lope tries to guide the group to handle the rats as they start to screech towards them.

Understanding the swarm has no reach, he quickly descends the stairs saying words of power and picking up colored sand from his belt pouch into his hand. He he blows the colorful sand in the direction of the rats. A color spray sprouts forward as he tries to knock the rats down via magic.

Pelligrina advances into the room, creeping as far as the top of the stairways, to get a better view. She doesn't dare descend in amongst the rats, but the presence of Lope down below her and the distance of the throw she would have to make causes her to wait to take further actions.

Though useful to know, Lope's instruction on the swarm's weaknesses didn't really help Julia given her lack of fire or blunt weapons. She did however have magic. "Hey, Mr. Archduke of Tangencies! What do you get when you mix a rat and an elephant? Who cares? It’s relephant!"

It was a truly awful joke, but Julia hoped that her magic would make it infectious as she focused her attention on the foul dire rat.

Unable to find an opening to throw the flask of acid she's holding without harming a friend, Pelligrina decides she'll have to use magic instead. She takes a couple of steps forward and extends her free hand, fingers splayed as she begins an incantation.

@Lope noted, that means Julia was never hit, so no AOO. I'll move her into attack green instead. @Julia if you'd prefer a different target please let me know.
As the rats approached him, Lopes sword flashed out. A sword wasn't the ideal weapon but still managed to slice a few in half! Dancing aside from the first swarm of rats, he swept through another low killing more but this nowhere near enough to put a stop to either swarm.

Julia waded into combat, hoping to skewer some of the stunned rats, but a rapier was far from the ideal weapon, she got one or two out of many. Still the party's combined efforts had significantly thinned out that swarm.

Triphylla ran as fast as she could to aid Cyrene with the larger talking rat, while Valeria grappled with her fear of the bite.

Most of the swarms where temporarily stunned so only one of them was able to move - the one lope had struck swarmed all over him in a seething mass of gnawing, scratching and biting! Before they reached him, he scythed his duelling sword this way and that, sending severed tails and limbs flying! But still they came adding more wounds
