Fin twitches an ear back at Drake. "She said she liked them. Not that my copy of them was wrong."

The training I thought I had isn't until next week. >_>

When The Princess Guard is ready, Noala leads you all north out of town into the forest. The journey is long and challenging, but with Noala’s help, you all make good time and avoid any difficult encounters. Still, the journey does take the better part of a day, and you all come up on the location of the oldest, largest blight with only an hour of daytime remaining.

If you all want to RP anything on your way there, feel free to do so. :)

On the approach to the oldest blight, the forest begins to take on the same look as it did around the wolf’s den where you fought the bloodthirsty shrubbery and the mutated wolves. The grass is dying off; foliage is brown and rotting; everything seems to be in varying stages of rot. The tell-tale sickly sweet scent of decay permeates the air–despite prolonged exposure to the scent, you have not gotten used to it.

Noala pauses along the outside of the perimeter and turns to you all, digging in her bag. ”We’re here. If you follow this trail for about an hour, you’ll come to a wall of brambles. I haven’t been able to figure out what’s inside–it’s dangerous, and with my hand…” She gestures helplessly with her crippled hand and sighs. ”I will be patrolling the perimeter and setting up my traps and snares. Try to keep you all from getting ambushed as you look around.” She finally pulls out 2 lesser healing potions and 2 barkskin potions. ”If you’d like, I have these - healing potions and barkskin potions. Be careful, though. The barkskin potions can make you more susceptible to fire.” She holds them out to whoever will take them. Decide who’s carrying them before you move forward.

”Be careful. I don’t know what you’re in for other than the blight…and it’s bad in here.”

-----On the Way----

Niss held Drake's hand for a time as they walked, but as they made distance and the terrain became rougher, she found a decent walking stick to assist her and let him have his hands free in case of an ambush. She was wearing the dress they'd put on one of the twins, though she left the hood down for now.

"Operation Impersonation seems to have gone off without a hitch," Niss said with a bit of her cheerfulness back. "At the very least, no one broke into our room and murdered us in our sleep. That was smart thinking, Fin. Thank you." Without thinking she reached over and gave him ear scritches, belatedly realizing that might be rude, or presumptuous or something.

She glanced at Baradim. She knew he was a private person, but she couldn't help herself. "Did you and Tamli enjoy having a real bed for the night?" She schooled her face, hiding any trace of a smile that might imply she was teasing.

------At the Perimeter-----

"I'll hold onto at least one of the healing ones, if that's alright. If I run out of spells and need to come and save one of you it'll be easier if I can find them. "

She frowned when Noala mentioned it being bad in there. "Well. We did so well against three plants. Let's see how we fare against a briar patch full."

~~ON THE WAY~~

When Inniska asked about how his room was, Baradim's face darkened for a moment and he looked confused. Now was a poor time to talk about their mates as they wandered through the woods into increasing danger. However, this was how humans tended to bond with their fellows.

"A bed feels strange. Too soft, too welcoming. I did not need the covers, her warmth was more than enough." Baradim murmurs, looking back at the young psychic. "Did you soothe Drake and his...eyebrows."

~~AT THE BLIGHT~~

"I have a potion of healing already. I am willing to take the potion of barkskin; it would be strange to deal with a creature in the woods that breathes fire." Baradim says, looking between the others.

"We were cocky and unsure when we last fought. Drake, you and I will focus down targets while making it difficult for others to bypass us. Finoan will provide support magically and physically. Inniska, you continue to provide your support as you know best. We take down one at a time, going through their numbers quickly. They will likely space out their strikes, giving us time to gain the advantage." The orc looked at each of his companions as he drew his sword and shield. "We can do this."

Updated inventory tracking.

"I don't have one of these potions yet. I'll take the last one if that works for everyone else. I can use them when I can't plan a better attack."

Fin hands the last Barkskin potion to Drake. "At least carry this even if you don't end up using it."

"Thank you, Noala."

He turns and follows Baradim. "Yes. Let's go. It is getting late, so we may want to come back here shortly. But we can at least see what we are getting ourselves into. That will help for preparations in the morning."

Deciding to scout ahead, the Princess Guard pushes into the blighted forest. As you go deeper into the blight, you notice that it’s much stranger than before. It is worse and worse as you go deeper. The first area you pass through is much like the area around the wolf’s den: rotting trees, dying plans, the sickly sweet smell of decay…

Deeper in, all the plants are dead; they are limp and rotten, and the scent of rot is greater than before. There are no birds or insects in the air…only the remains of the creatures desperate enough to sample the plants rotting in the ground.

Finally, The Princess guard enters an area that is even odder: smaller plants and trees seem to have returned to a twisted semblance of life. Their leaves drip with an oily sap, their branches are gnarled yet…strangely pliable, and their bark looks like dragon’s scales. Many of the plants are covered in odd pustules that glow slightly in the growing dusk, and biting gnats swarm the plants.

DC 17 Survival Check:
In this area, you notice faint boot tracks that lead you to what seems to be the easy way into the rest of the forest, shaving significant time off of your arrival at the wall of brambles. If you succeed in this check, you will arrive at the bramble wall with some daylight to spare. If you do not, it will be dark by the time you get to the clearing.

Deeper into this massive blight, the plants take on unnatural shades, and their branches seem to shudder and quake at the sensation of something passing. Up ahead is a wall of thick brambles with some sort of thorny iris in the center. Several clusters of vine-y shrubbery dot the path to the strange iris at the end of the clearing. New map on roll20.

"This place is creepy," Finoan says quietly as they walk deeper into the area.

"Hey, Baradim. Does this place give you undead vibes, or just dead? Mostly I have been seeing alchemical mutations rather than undead, but I would be happy to get a second opinion on that."

"It does. It is the silence. It is too quiet." Baradim says as they walk through the broken decay all around them. The orc shuddered to think what awful concoction had created such a dense zone of death. Yet as they moved on, the mutations began to appear. Strange trees and other flora both marveled and disgusted the orc as he carefully watched his steps.

Survival: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
It ain't me.

Moving up through the shrubs and strange foliage, he laid his eyes upon the thick wall of brambles that circled into a queer, thorn-laden iris up ahead. Shrubs with roots like ropes were strewn about the path and the memory of their encounter with those strange plants came back to mind. "Be careful. Never know what might be ahead."

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

Baradim notices that the shrubbery littering the path have very familiar veiny tendrils wrapped around their base. He remembers that they have quite reach...might be worthwhile to avoid them.

You can see them on the map now. You will only trigger initiative if you walk within 10ft of them.

Fin looks at Baradim. "Do you have any battle code prohibition or something like that against hit and run tactics?"

Baradim grins a bit as Finoan asks him about prohibitions. It made sense that the old soldier would ask; paladins would have a number of vows and codes to deal with. Shaking his head, he takes a knee and grabs the crossbow upon his back.

"Not at all. All that matters is if we win. If possible, we may wish to avoid them. We can't fight this whole blight; we want to rip out the core first."

Boo hiss on getting sick! Man, that sucks. Sorry to hear that, Niss.

@Fey: Also, I screwed up my last attack on my previous post. Should've been +7 instead of +8. My bad.

Impressed by the amount of destruction the orc is putting on these plants, "By the gods, Baradim, where was this when we were fighting those blood-suckers the other day?" he jests, winking, before moving to the last one and bringing his falchion down upon it.

Falchion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

Falchion: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Damage: 1d10 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 = 7 +1 is Forceful

You still would have gotten the hit!

Drake slashes through the last wiggly plant once and slices the tendril clean off. He's already partway through another hit when he realizes that the creature is dead and decides to just stab the tendril...just in case.

Combat's over. You can keep looking around or you can go back and camp if you'd like.

"Well, that wasn't too bad."

"What do you say we head back to Noala and wait until morning to investigate the area more? I can kinda see at night, but I still prefer to check things out during the day."

"It would help the others to see. I can see fine in the dark but not everyone has such keen, orcish eyes." Baradim says, wiping the greenish fluid off of his blade with a dirty cloth. "We can tell her that we found a trail. It would have to be travelled often to still exist."

The Princess Guard makes their way back to the clearing they parted ways with Noala to find her already there with a small fire built. She looks up as the group approaches and smiles widely.

"I didn't expect you back tonight, but I certainly won't say no to company. Find anything?"

While the rot isn't as bad in this area, the smell of rot is ever-present. Fortunately, there seem to be several places on the ground and nearby that aren't too horrible to sleep on. It won't be a comfortable night, but you will be able to get decent enough rest.

Feel free to chat with Noala! She would be willing to take the first watch while Fin gets the rest he needs if you all want to go the route where Fin does the majority of the evening watch.

Finoan comes over to the fire and finds a relatively crusty-free place to sit. "More plants that move way faster than plants should. These ones weren't as tough as the ones we dealt with yesterday. But we also only went to the outskirts of the blight area. There is still a lot more to check out in there."

"At least tonight we don't have to figure out some crazy place to stay in town."

"I'm going to curl up here for a bit while you guys figure out dinner and sleeping arrangements. Then I can keep watch for the night. No reason not to."

Luckily for you all, Noala also has some food heating up in a pot over the fire. She adds more dried meat, grains, and fresh vegetables (from town!) into the pot to bulk it up to feed the Princess Guard. "Those things are weak, but if they gang up on you..." She shivers. "I saw them take down a massive buck once."

Eventually, the meal is finished cooking, and Noala gestures for you all to come and eat.

"I can keep an eye out until Finoan wakes up. I've been resting for half an hour or so." She smiles at them.

You're welcome to rp the evening or whatevs. Finoan, whenever you take your watch, go ahead and roll me a perception check.

Finoan settles down for a rest while everyone else is eating. "My best hypothesis of this is that someone is trying to invent a new mutagen. What I don't understand is the motive for all of this. Well, the blight itself may be simply the result of castoff disposal of failed experiments. But what would a new mutagen be used for? Why? And for who?"

After dinner and some more chatting, Fin gets up and lets Noala know that he is ready to keep watch for the night.

"Maybe. Alchemists are known for their strange craft. Corpse blood could be such a...what do they call it. A...reagens" The orc says the word in his native tongue snapping his fingers lightly.

Noticing the food Noala is preparing, "It looks like dinner arrangements have been made, Fin. Thank you, Noala."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"And reagents I think is the word you're looking for, Baradim," Drake assists. Turning to Fin, he shrugs. "I've no idea, Fin. I guess that's what we are here to find out."

Noala listens carefully and nods along with their conversation. "Corpse blood is one such reagent...I told Finoan a couple of days ago that it is a bit taboo...usually not used for anything socially acceptable."

During Finoan's watch...
---

A slight breeze rustles the leaves of the dying, rotting trees around the campsite and brings with it the strong, almost unbearable scent of rot from the direction of the strange bramble wall.

The usual night-time sounds of a forest - nocturnal animals roaming and digging around for something mildly edible, insects, birds, all manner of fauna - are missing. The night is eerily still, save for a few mournful, broken howls and, once, a loud, angry screech.

The night passes uneventfully, and as dawn comes filtering through the trees, the forest slowly comes alive with the sounds of insects and the rustling of animals...or, as The Princess Guard is familiar with, the rustling of live vegetation.

Finoan:
The loud, angry screech heard in the night reminds you of the sounds large predatory cats make...much like the sounds you are wont to make when hurt.

During the night watch:
"Bah. Wolves, dogs, bears, plants, and now cats too."

As everyone starts waking up, Fin reports. "Well, the place is too quiet and not quiet enough."

"Like the other blight area, there are practically no small animals or insects running around making noise trying to attract mates. All that seems to be left are large predators. I heard something that sounded like a large cat. Not sure if it was hunting or fighting for its life."

Finoan reviews his spells from his spellbook in the morning and decides to keep the same ones he had yesterday.

He also rewraps his handwraps to make sure that they are in place and working correctly.

Niss spends the night curled up beside Drake and stretches when she wakes, working out the cramps that go along with sleeping on the lumpy ground. She makes a face.

"I had hoped to go nose-blind to the smell while sleeping. No such luck, it seems."

"Niss, you mentioned seeing something that looked like a footprint earlier. Do you think you could find that trail again?"

Finoan puts away his spellbook and stands up. "Anyway, I am ready to head back in there when you guys are."

The path back is easy enough to find, and the trip only takes around half an hour or so.

The sight of the oldest and largest blight looms ahead; unnaturally colored flora seem to quiver as you approach and trail your way towards the bramble wall. The vine lashers fought the night before are still littering the walkway, but they're in very advanced stages of putrefaction in just a short amount of time.

In the center of the bramble wall, an odd thorny iris-shaped doorway winds clockwise in a broad circle. It does not seem to have any kind of handle or keyhole, and if you watch it closely, it seems to undulate softly.

What would you like to do?

Rising and working some kinks out, "Unfortunately, there's just no avoiding that smell."

Cutting his attention to the wall and its odd doorway, "Maybe we should just burn the whole thing down. I know, I know, only we can prevent forest fires and all that but by the gods, all this vegetation seems like nothing more than a poisonous death trap." He shrugs.
