The combination of the food and Benny's 'animal speech' does the trick. The backpack has a Pact World designer label and contains leftover food and pouches of ready-to-drink alcoholic cocktails, which the felivines were eating. You also recognize the backpack’s designer logo as belonging to a brand that Envar endorses.
Twila-5 |
Twila-5 gives Benny a thumbs-up as the felivines scamper away. "That was well done, Benny."
After examining the pack, Twila-5 sighs. "<Sigh.> I guess we should try to find his footprints or something. I wonder if those felivines could tell us which way Envar went. Benny, think you could call them back and ask them? We can offer them the alcohol in exchange if they want it."
Before leaving the area, she searches around to see if any non-edible contents of the backpack were scattered.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Survival +1; hopefully someone else can lead the way.
phaeton_nz |
As you examine the backpack and it's contents, the forest grows deathly still. The sky darkens as a shadow passes overhead. Above the treetops, a gigantic shape blots out the sun. Sleek, smooth, and glistening, the shadow resembles an enormous aquatic beast. Glowing blue tendrils slide from the creature’s underside, undulating through the air. Then, with terrible speed and deliberateness, the beast dives, carving a destructive path through the crystalline trees.
A cave opening 250 feet away represents safety for you, if you can reach it. The massive creature pursues you from above the canopy, lashing out at them sporadically with its tendrils.
It is fairly obvious you could not take thing thing out in a battle .
This is treated as a hazard. The thick jungle counts as difficult terrain but you can move at full speed by suceeding at Acrobatics, Athletics, Perception, Life Sciences, Stealth or Survival checks. The creature can only attack once per round.

Liftt |
Liftt sighs, looks up at the weird sky-creature.
"What is that, some type of flying jellyfish?" he gasps.
His Court Appointed Anger Management Coach, apparently short sighted, watches with interest, notebook in hand, as he flees toward the caves.

Rilynn Rae |
Life Science: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
The normally astute and well-informed Rilynn has no clue what the giant jellyfish is that's attack them.
Life Science: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
She is so confounded by it that she crashes into a tree.
whoa.

"To the cave, my friends! Posthaste!"

Skip's aging eyes keep him from moving to quickly.
Looks like I missed quite a bit over the weekend. Sorry everyone, was super busy. Is there a slide for our movement or are we just trying to make it to 250 theatre of the mind style?
phaeton_nz |
Just trying to run 250ft over difficult terrain - don't really need a map
Benny - failed, half movement this round
Lifft - success, full movement this round
Rilynn - failure, half movement this round
Skip - failure - half movement this round
Jax - Success, full movement this round
Twila-5 still to roll.
Did anyone grab the backpack?
Twila-5 |
Twila-5 grabs the backpack, stuffs as much of its contents into it as possible, and makes a mad dash to catch up with her fleeing team.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
Wow. Only one of us rolled above a 9.
phaeton_nz |
Sometime a 9 may be enough
Twila-5 also succeeds and manages to move at full speed.
The katura attempts to attack a random PC 1d6 ⇒ 4
Using the order above, it is Skip that gets targetted.
tendril v KAC: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 bludgeoning: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
I forgot to mention - Any PC that has already succeeded at a skill check on their turn can, as a swift action, attempt to Aid another PC at their respective skill check; however, doing so is not without its difficulty as the PC who attempts to Aid incurs a –2 penalty to the next skill check they attempt during this encounter.
Round 2 (will allow retroactive Aids on Round 1 but that will incur a penalty on this round.
'Scrimshaw Benny' Benthic |
Benny would have grabbed the bag worst case, before walrusing along
Half move AND difficult terrain means 20' = 10' :O
Rilynn Rae |
Assuming most of us have standard 30' speed, we could normally full action move 30' (not run) per round in difficult terrain. Best case scenario, we could complete this activity in 9 rounds. The big squid is better than 50/50 to hit most of us and does an average of 8.5 pts of damage. This is gonna hurt. A lot. Add to that, any stragglers will be the only available targets as we get close to the end of the run... We'll have to work together and hope. Can anyone fly?
Jax Kraven 2 |
Why are we running, we can fight right? Okay I guess I'll run
athletics: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28 Dm, do these things even have stats? Or are they just very high cr? Reminds me of another scenario. If we use all our grenades and explosives, maybe we can kill it, spoiler has something similar I'm referring to.
Twila-5 |
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
Twila-5 continues light-footing it through the undergrowth, taking care not to spill the contents of Envar's backpack. When she sees Skip get hit, she tries to help him by looking for an easier path for him.
Perception to Aid Skip: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

acrobatics: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (12) + 11 = 23
Aid-another on someone else using acrobatics.
phaeton_nz |
@Jax - No stats given. It's probably got the stats of a Besmarian Whelp, plus it's difficult to hit through all that foliage
Jax - Success - full movement
Twila-5 - Success - Full movement even with penalty

Having only made it 45 feet through the thick underbrush, Skip begins to feel dread as he sees some of his colleagues breaking free and making a good pace towards the tunnel.
Twila-5 |
"Come on, Skip!" Twila-5 dashes back to help the distinguished gentleman. If she were stronger, she'd toss him over her shoulder so they could all go faster.

This running thing is not her strong suit, but she keeps at it and helps her teammates who fall behind.
Jax Kraven 2 |
oouch question, how is it targeting me with its tendrils when I'm getting full movement each round? Tendrils have a reach of like 50? So if you are in front or back, it can target anyone?
athletics: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17 he keeps moving.

It is firing from above since it is floating above the tree canopy and taking potshots at those it can see through the gaps.
Waiting on Twila-5 and Skip.
Twila-5 |
Ducking and weaving, Twila-5 tries to make progress and avoid being an easy target.
Athletics: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 11 - 2 = 11
Includes the -2 penalty for Aiding Skip last round.
Edit: Shucks. That looks like a failure. I'll put the aid roll in a spoiler, just in case.
Perception to Aid Skip: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Skip Intro |
Perception: 1d20 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 4 = 13
Skip makes for the log but has difficulty gaining traction along it with his now dirty loafers.
I had to laugh at "if I can aid anyone", then the spoiler tag specifically calling out Skip. The dice aren't with me, and now it looks like I'm dragging you down with me.

Skip: (-10) 190ft to go
Twila-5: (-0) 145ft to gp
Rilynn Rae |
Rilynn has been giving Aid every round. Is her +2 benefit to Skip enough for him to succeed last round?
Life Science: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 10 - 2 = 9
Rilynn stumbles again.
phaeton_nz |
@Rilynn - unfortunately not quite - are you auto aiding?
Jax Kraven 2 |
As Jax gets hits again Help He is dying 1. I don't know how we are going to survive this if it can do 10 damage at a time. This thing is almost guaranteed to hit us, even with the heaviest armor on at our level.
phaeton_nz |
Dying 1??? This isn't Pathfinder 2e :) - Anyway, I amended my last post, you are actually safe where you are - also it seems to be ignoring you now, unless you get up and keep going
Rilynn Rae |
@Rilynn - unfortunately not quite - are you auto aiding?
I thought I was following the scenario rule and taking a -2 penalty each subsequent turn. I have consistently stated my intention to help others during my action. Can I change my action this round to go back to Jax and give him a Serum of Healing?
Serum of Healing: 1d8 ⇒ 8
phaeton_nz |
You were ... I just wasn't sure what your aid rolls were - and yes, I'll allow that if he's within your half movement range
Liftt |
"No... the OTHER left" calls back Liftt to Skip.
acrobatics, aid penalty: 1d20 + 11 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 11 - 2 = 22
perception (aid): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
So long as he spends 1RP to stabilise I think we are being told he is okay.
Twila-5 |
@GM phaeton_nz: If the scenario has us roll for the whole dash to safety, do you want to resolve these checks in batches to speed things up? Say, 5 checks at a time?
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
Perception to Aid Skip: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Twila-5 is just pointing out an easier path, turning to shout back to Skip, when she sees Jax go down and Rilynn hustle to his side. She's torn between dashing back to help and getting to safety herself.
