Using the extra pieces of leather I cut off the body, I'll create a some "rope" and tie everything up in a bundle. Then I'll hand it off to Konrad, since he was the one who wanted it.

@Brunhilde: Should be coach reins we could use to lash the loot together in a bundle or two?

Udo pauses, his question going unanswered as the picking over the Dullahan corpse causes disconcertion among the others.

As calm is restored, he shrugs at the conduct of his companions as he recalls a Shallyan rhyme from the orphanage;

Those quick to kill, those quicker to plunder, soon find themselves, six feet under.

At the coach, Udo wraps Goswin's hand and head in rags (Knew I'd find a use for them! ;), then places the body parts carefully next to the man's fat corpse.

From the door he gestures towards the Dullahan's wracked and stripped body;

"What of the Dullahan? Is it man or beast? Do we inter it with the other bless'ed dead or leave it for the ravens and wolves?"

Can we hear the wolves? If so, does it sound like they are close? Knowing very roughly how close they are and how much time we have for gathering corpses/stripping armor would be helpful.

Taking a few feverous moments to ensure the corpses won't be disturbed by animals, and to strip the Dullahan from his armor, you start the trek toward Hallt.

Fortunately, the lights of the town are still visible, at least for now. But you have a choice to make, and this choice might not be easy: would you rather follow the road, at the risk of a longer but safer travel, or would you try to go cross country, and bead to Hallt, without knowing the lay of the land?

First, sorry, it's been a long day at work, couldn't post earlier. You can try a Navigation (Int) +0 Test, each SL will shorten the time spend outdoors. Negative SL will lenghten the trip, of course. You walk at the slowest character movement rate per hour (if you have 4 movement, you walk at 4 miles/hour). Anyone can try to roll for Navigation, but if two or more roll, SL are cumulative, in a good or bad way (your failures can lower the success of others as you argue about the path)

In the distance, one you hope is still far, far away, you hear the wolves howl.

The thing we killed was a man but one corrupted by chaos. Where we walk to the town may have the same taint. We must be careful. Also the man we fought was a combat expert. Against untrained folk he looped off their heads with ease. We barely escaped him. We need to keep a sharp eye and get into a room. No one should speak to anyone until morning

Konrad glanced down at the gear he was carrying. Surely, the creature would come for his axe before the armor, right? Nobody ever cared about armor. Weapons had names. Still...the thought of that pointed-eared head in the torso sent shivers down his spine. "Well, I'm going to sell this armor and buy some proper and fashionable leather. Nobody duels in chain, anyways." After a moment's thought, he said "But let's head straight to a temple first. We should report what happened to a priest, and get a priest to say a blessing over this gear. Everyone knows that Sigmar and Morr are stronger than the darkness. They always defeat it. It'll be safe so long as it has one of their blessings."

Brunhilde follows Konrad and the others, hoping that they have had more experience navigating through the woods than she has. Come to think of it, she can't even remember the last time she was in the woods, and why would she go there? Nothing but bandits and wolves. Better to stick to the cities where at least she could deal with the wolves that prowled around her.

She listens offhandedly to the conversation between the other men, but keeps her opinions to herself.

Never have been one to get involved with matters of the cults, and I'm not going to start now.

At the mention of the creature that was killed, she briefly speaks up.

"It certainly wasn't no natural thing, I can tell you that."

You start to follow the road, as instructed by Konrad, between two bits of conversation about theology with Udo.

Then Gottfried, maybe fooled by Mannslieb, sees a shortcut... but it is, in fact, the road less traveled.

The wolves howl falter away. Perhaps they found the horses, and are feasting in them. Maybe their bellies will be full, and they won't be hungry enough to pursue you. Now at least you can hear your own feet crushing the snow. You shiver in the cold night, and the armor you carry seems to weight more and more.

Life on the roads and streets of the Empire can be rough. Survival is sometimes incertain.

The light from Brunhilde's lantern dies. Only the twin moons twinle feebly help your sight from far above, mocking you probably.

But alas, after more time than needed, you reach the Hallt's limits, enclosed by wooden walls.

The gate, of course, is closed.

The woman leading the guards comes into the light. She is quite heavy set, withdark brown hair, a stout club in hand, and wears an old livery of the Reiklander army. Her face is scarred, so she probably seen some real battles.

There is no pitfighting guild here, it's a small town. I wouldn't tolerate one, not under my watch. Sure, we have the occasional rumble in the inn, a few drunken fools who try to show how tough they are. My trusty cudgel show them they aren't tough enough, usually. We have enough troubles with bandits and pack of wolves on the roads, I don't want bloodmoney inside the walls. [b]Listen, folks, nothing against you. I don't know you. So I can't say I've heard anything good about you, but I've honestly never heard nothing bad either. People in Hallt see travelers coming and going. But this is Hexennacht, and they might be a little more nervous, a little more suspicious than usual. So here's the reasonable deal: you give us our main weapons to keep, just until tomorrow morning, and you can keep a dagger. Theres our inn down the street, the Calm Toad. If you have some coins you can get shelter and some warm food there.

She takes Konrad's rapier without a word, just aswering
Not too early. I need my beauty sleep.

The irony of theses words and her battle-scarred face strikes you, but she continues collecting the weapons without missing a beat, nodding at Gottfried.

She seems to sympatize more with Brunhilde, giving her the direction of the Calm Toad- which isn't too far form Hallt's entrance.

Maybe you could have one warm bath tomorrow morning, if that's a consolation.

Imrik turns over his staff and says, "A warm fire would be more then enough for me right now." He then turns to head towards the Calm Toad before anything worse comes out from the night behind them.

Finding himself unarmed, Konrad had even less reason to remain out in the cold and the wilderness. He hurried after Imrik, ready to warm himself by a fire and to get a good night's sleep.

Udo nods in thanks toward the Guard Leader, then departs towards the Calm Toad with the others.

The blunt featured artisan mirthlessly adding as they trudge;

"It would seem we are bound by fate to remain a company for one more night..."

Lets all agree to not mention the more.... errr... spooky elements of tonight's events eh? Any locals might turn on us. We just leave it at we were waylaid by highwaymen. It's sorta close to the truth. Now how many coins did we scavenge? I'll make a gift of this horse meat assuming we also get to eat, but this may not be cheap to stay.

"A decent amount." Kornad said. "Fourteen shillings, sixteen pennies. But I grabbed the chain armor. Felver the axe, and you the sword. We also have a silver dagger, a whip, and some books. All of those could likely be sold. Until then, we can put those shillings to use in getting ourselves a place to sleep tonight."

After a pause, he continued "I was thinking of keeping it the armor as a keepsake, something to remember this horrific night by. But dueling in heavy armor isn't my style Start doing that and I'll have to fight people like Felver! So come tomorrow morning I'll be looking to trade it for some fashionable leather. Given that we were all in this together, we can split whatever coin is left from the trade." He said, looking around. He knew that the one thing that could get people to turn on each other the fastest was gold, and to be too greedy would likely mean someone "turning him in" for a reward. Best to give everyone a buy-in, so that they were all in it together. That way nobody could claim a grievance, nor that their hands were clean.
