From his position in the center of the room, Dr. Lazarus nods his approval. "Excellent teamwork, dear colleagues. Inspiring work with the electricity." With the first guardian down, Dr. Lazarus turns his attention to the one remaining. With his hammer in hand, he plays out an attack strategy in his head, as he attempts to recall further information that may help, this time from an arcane perspective.

Devise a Stratagem w/ Known Weakness: 1d20 ⇒ 16 (Roll is used for subsequent attack roll.)

Arcana-Recall Knowledge (w/ penalty) DC 24: 1d20 + 15 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 15 - 2 = 24

After sharing new information with his allies, the Doctor flings his hammer twice in succession at the clockwork creature.

+1 Striking Returning Grabthar's Hammer (w/ Stratagem): 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32
Bludgeoning Damage + Strategic Strike: 2d6 + 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (2, 6) + (5, 5) + 5 = 23

+1 Striking Returning Grabthar's Hammer 2nd attack: 1d20 + 14 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 14 - 4 = 25
Bludgeoning Damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 2) + 5 = 10

◆ Devise, ◇ Recall, ◆◆ Strike x2

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

As Astrid strides up to the clockwork soldier, she discovers something new about it. It is capable of striking opponents as they position themselves.
Attack of Opportunity Halberd: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (12) + 18 = 30 Reach weapon
Slashing damage: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Then it is her turn. She hits with both the shield boss and the short sword. Her strikes are both to the same area of the hardened armor.

No doubt Natesh is thankful she distracted it else he would have been the one attacked that way. It attempts to dodge the arc of electricity coming for it. It does evade the worst of it, but still takes extra damage.
Reflex save: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 33

Then the first arrow from Lizzo pins the construct in place and causes it to cease operation.

Combat over. One success.

Having observed these opponents, Dr. Lazarus recalls that there is supposed to be some sort of winding mechanism on the creatures, Someone mechanically inclined would be able to unwind such a creature.
Disable Device to unwind the creature.

Go ahead and heal. Status:

Dr. Lazarus again nods approvingly at the efficient way we handled these things. As Lizzo finishes it off, he turns to Gib, "Be a good lad and join me over here near the first one." When the rogue arrives, the Doctor points out, "These gears here? I believe with your skills, you could disable these mechanical guardians if we face them again." Then, after standing up and glancing at the wounded party, he adds to Gib. "How about I handle the healing this time, and you can get the next round?" He moves to Astrid and Natesh.

If we feel we have 10 mins (what does the group think?), we'll do Treat Wounds, otherwise, Battle Medicine. I'll default to Treat Wounds for now.

The good Doctor unpacks his healing tools. "Now hold still, this shouldn't hurt. Much." He sets to work with his bandages and ointments.

Treat Wounds (expert) DC 20: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (2, 5) + 10 = 17
Assurance => 23

Ward Medic allows healing up to 4 targets at a time. At expert (DC 20), healing is +10.

Some GMs are fine with a single roll for Ward Medic, but in case you want a second roll, Astrid was first, then Natesh.
Treat Wounds (expert) DC 20: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (3, 4) + 10 = 17

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

You finish searching the area and move deeper into the complex.

After some time you open up a door to find a new chamber.

At the far end of this chamber is a spoked dial mounted on the wall above a shallow rectangular pool. A deep feminine voice echoes around the chamber, “Felise? Is that you?” This is a different voice than you heard before.

There are two creatures visible sitting in the pool. The pool itself doesn’t look very deep.

Arcana or Nature DC 23 to identify. The creatures are not currently attacking.

Gib puts his weapons away, ” Excellent work taking them down.”

The gnome listens to Dr. Lazarus about how to de-wind the clockwork, ” Hopefully there are not any more of those around.” he shugs as the Doctor takes the first round of healing and does an adequate job.

Gib pokes around the dead clockworks checking to see if there is anything valuable to recover from the bodies.

Continuing on after the short rest, Gib is curious about the two creatures in the tub within the next chamber, but he remains in the shadows in case they become hostile. They look like some form of aquatic creature, but the gnome doesn't know anything about that.

(GM, did the feminine voice come from them?)

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

No, it is another case of a voice echoing through the chambers. You can not pin point where it came from, but it wasn’t the two creatures.

Natesh is very thankful as Lazarus tends to his wounds, although he does wince a bit as the wounds are closed. "Thank you Doctor, I'll keep that in mind. Maybe we would be able to stop them before they attacked next time. I rather not fight if I don't have to, if only because I rather not need so much tending and bandages."

Looking at the new chamber Natesh tries again to find the source, but focuses on the creatures within the pool.

Arcana to Identify:
Arcana: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (17) + 18 = 35

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Natesh:
They are called Quatoids, small aquatic water elementals. They can speak aquan and common.
Immunities bleed, paralyzed, poison, sleep; Resistances bludgeoning, fire
Calming Bioluminescence (aura, emotion, mental, visual) 30 feet. The aura sheds dim light. Creatures in the emanation gain a +2 circumstance bonus to saving throws against emotion effects. The quatoid can activate or deactivate the aura as a single action, which has the concentrate trait.
They love to use their innate hydraulic push that they can do at will.
They can also extend a pseudo pod / tentacle with reach and if they grab someone with it, they can then constrict them.

Horizon Hunters

Male Human (Half-Elf) Barrister Wizard 7 | HP 80/80 | AC 23, Shield 24 | Fort +12, Ref +15, Will +12 | Perc +11 (E) | Explore: Search Speed 25 ft | Hero 0 | Focus 1| Spells 1st 4/4, 2nd 3/4, 3rd 2/4, 4th 2/3 |

Natesh reacts with uncertainty to the creatures, uncertain of their intent, but he does inform his party, "Those are a a type of intelligent water elemental Quatoid. The light they produce is very calming and they tend to love launching spouts of water, although their grappling and constricting pseudo pods are also quite effective. Their elemental bodies lack blood and would be resistant to flame or crushing weapons like your hammer Doctor."

Looking to the others first for permission before trying to speak to the Quatoids, Natesh does call into the room, "excuse me? Would it be alright if we entered? We are trying to learn more about this place."

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Don’t come within 10’ of our pool. As long as you can do that, you may enter.

They probably didn’t say 10’, but gave some other indication of distance that is equivalent to 10’.

Looking in the room, there is very little of it that is not within that distance of the pool.

Dr. Lazarus nods to the wise Natesh as he discusses the creatures in the pool. When the wizard recommends against using the hammer, the Doctor stows it and draws his elven curve blade. "Thank you, my dear boy. I try to be prepared." He steps into the doorway to get a closer look at the dial.

Can he get any more info now that he's within 30'?

The Doctor casts Detect Magic to check if the spoked dial radiates any auras. He tries asking the Quatoids, "We're looking for Heraxia. Have you seen her?" Depending on how they respond, he asks, "Can you tell us about this place? Do you know anything about that interesting dial on the wall?" He eagerly awaits their response.

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Dr. Lazarus doesn’t detect any magic beyond the low background level that has permeated the maze and this complex. The dial looks mechanical in nature. It does not radiate magic.

Think that was the name the other voice called. Started before and has stopped again.

The dial is why we have this nice pool. We get a clean pool, no intruders are allowed to touch the dial.

They seem generally disinterested in you provided you keep your distance.

After they answer, he follows with, "If we stay close to the walls without disturbing your pool, may we pass through?" The Doctor takes up a new lead.

Aside to the others Natesh, out of the hearing of the elementals, does note, "I'm open to negotiation, but they are very defensive to the point of not being open to the subject, possibly rightly. We don't have much time to search the area. I do have some invisibility magic that could allow us to more covertly explore the area as long as we remain near one another. It might be enough to explore the room and pass by if we are silent."

As the slow magic wears off Natesh reverses the magic he had just cast to accelerate Gib.

Casting Haste on Gib. Gib should now be quickened (for an extra action that can be used to step, stride, or strike) for the next minute.

Edit, misrecalled my notes. I couldn't strike like I was planning so I just pull out a scroll instead of the attack I was planning.

Actions: ◆ Draw Scroll of haste ◆◆ Cast spell (haste targeting Gib)

Gib goes splashing through the pool in order to get next to the dial. Evidently the dial was much too distracting as neither of his attacks hits. There is a gurgling sound as the water starts to drain away.

Lizzo fires another couple of arrows, neither of which hit their mark.

Our pool!” the two creatures both yell in dismay.

They both turn towards Gib. Looks like they don’t like what he did.
