The spellskeins hear your intentions to kill the silverfish and follow you out, keeping a cautious distance. When they see the dead silver fish, the spellskeins get visibly excited. Two of them fold into hands and high five. The other turns into a teabag and bounces up and down on the face of one of the giant silverfish corpses.

When you swing the door open, there are no new creatures waiting for you, just another room with desks and papers. It looks like this room served as a staging area for someone’s attempts to organize the whole library. Several books sit open on one desk with notes next to them, atop scrolls with long lists. The other two desks precariously hold up several stacks of books and closed boxes. More boxes overflowing with books sit on the floor nearby, as if still waiting to be sorted.

The spellskeins peek over your shoulders, and when they see the room is free of bugs, they zip in and start pointing to one of the boxes stuffed with books. A closer look reveals the box is actually a chest with carved writings all over it, which is the Collected Field Notes of the Druid Mata Digemari.

"It appears that we've found all of the books we're supposed to be looking for," Laesah reasons, "but there's still one room that we haven't looked into. Should we do it, for completion's sake?"

She then glances sideways into the room with the non-violent wasp's nest. "And should we usher those stinging things out of here?"

Laesah is happy to be first into the last unexplored room, once she determines a lack of traps on the door.

"Honestly? I don't think it is worth it. Finding a nest of relaxed wasps is like finding a sleeping lion, count your blessings and move on. Though I am with on searching the next room!"

Much scans the ruined room and turns to the spellskeins.
If any of you would like to come with us back to the main library, I'm sure you'd be welcome there. If not, you can stay in our dorm. There are always books there. You'll need to do less teabagging, I'd imagine, but otherwise you'll fit right in."

These spellskeins are so emotive that even though they don't speak you are starting to get a sense of how they feel from how they behave, and they seem pretty thrilled at Much's suggestion to follow you home. Folding themselves into paper crowns, they perch atop your heads at jaunty angles.

The final room is the most mundane. This is the equivalent of a supply closet. The boxes within contains extra supplies, such as blank journals, quills, charcoal, and writing implements. If someone wanted to stock up on school supplies, this is the place. There's also a ledger tracking the supplies, and a not-so-petty cash box containing 35 Gold.

You have found all the things Ot sent you for, and some extras (The ritual, some scrolls, etc.). And most importantly (maybe) you've made some friends along the way. What do you do now?

"Back to campus! I don't know why the administration abandoned this place - I think it would have made an awesome library."

"I thank you for your efforts to return these books." Ot says, after you fill him in on your adventure and drop off his materials. "I am troubled that there were more gremlins, but it shouldn't surprise me at this point. We'll need to continue expanding our defenses and checking all the various nooks and unused places of the school. It is a credit to your character that you were able to remove them with such minimal loss of life. You make me very proud, indeed."

The teacher takes his inkwell and pours it out into a saucer, setting it out in front of you. The spellskeins hop off your heads, transform back into their lizard forms and start lapping at the ink. He looks back at you with the warm smile you have become so accustomed to.

"The affection these spellskeins pay you is meritorious as well. They are easy to dismiss, and difficult to befriend. I understand that your bath used to be home to some spellskeins that had a much different fate when they met you, early in your time here. Let the difference between that moment and this one serve to remind you just how much you have changed since you've joined us. Perhaps these ones can take the place of the ones you dispatched?"

He scratches Post-It on the crown of the head, and asks, "Would you like that, little one? Would you like to stay near your new friends?" Post-It bobs their head and gives Ot's finger a playful nip, then turns their attention back to the ink. Ot chuckles and looks back to you.

"You are... unusual students, still coming into your magical aptitude, whereas most join the school as magical prodigies. I find that delightful. Some here do not. None can deny that you have earned your masks, however." He says this with some seriousness, and you wonder if anyone has denied it, and if Ot had to argue on your behalf.

"I will help you craft your masks. You are my cohort, and doing so will be my honor. Consider well what shape your mask will take. It will reflect you and represent you. In many ways, your mask will become you. Many of the most famous heroes of the Magaambya are known only as their mask. It is our way. Animals are the most typical shapes for these masks, but other shapes - particularly celestial objects or supernatural beasts - aren’t uncommon. The mask will be simple wood, but you can use many other materials - feathers or stones, for example - to adorn them..."

Teacher Ot stops himself and laughs ruefully, chiding himself. "Listen to me, lecturing when I should have been having a conversation. You must have questions? Please, I am at your disposal."

Please note that I don't necessarily assume you have handed over the ritual, the scrolls, the map, or anything outside of what he expressly asked for. Any questions? After this we will do another round of study (and any other downtime activities you'd like) and then mask making!

Haunt nods and starts to raise his hand as though they were in class, before catching himself and lowering it. "I've got a few questions. Once we put on our masks, are we allowed to take them off again? I thought I heard that we couldn't, but that seems weird because you're not wearing a mask right now. And who could possibly find us anything less than delightful? We're all delightful. And why was the library abandoned? There were a lot of books left behind, even if the Academy decided not to use the building anymore, and anyway that big old tree stump was neat."

He thinks for a moment, and adds, "Also, when you say we have to make our masks out of wood, does that mean we have to carve them ourselves? Because I'm not very good with a knife unless I'm in a fight."

Takulu nods as Haunt goes through his list, and then takes a deep breath, preparing to answer. "You can take them off, though students who deeply dedicate themselves to the path of the Magic Warriors will not. There are some here who find your prominence as my students and your exploits in general frustrating because you are not the sort of magical adepts that our school is known for - If they have problems with you as individuals, they have been wise enough to not say so within my hearing. I do not know why the library is abandoned and it seems a waste. I agree it is very neat and I hope someone makes better use out of it."

Ot pauses here, catching his breath and dropping his playful mirroring of Haunt's relentless pace.

"I will support you in crafting your masks, as will the other teachers. This is something we do as a community. We will bring the collected strength of our history and our craft. None shall fail."

To Much, Teacher Ot says, "I was also fascinated with the library, but I've never gotten a good answer for why it was left in such a state. All I know is that it was a dormitory, and a previous administrator decided it would serve better as a library. Midway through the project, that administrator left, and the next one decided to use their resources for other projects." Ot shrugs and looks slightly embarrassed on behalf of the school. "This school, amazing though it is, remains a bureaucracy. It is one of the most enduring criticisms - The Magaambya can struggle to move quickly, and sometimes lacks the ability to follow through. The library seems like an strong expression of those opinions. One of the school's many positives in the face of that, however, is that it supports individual initiative. If you all find the library wasted, perhaps you could put it to better purpose?"

"As for your masks, I would be a poor teacher indeed if I could not give you information on that subject." Ot says with a grin, then begins reciting information in his instructor's cadence and you know these are his prepared remarks on the subject. "What you do with your mask is up to you. Some wear it proudly and at every opportunity, a sign of who they have become, with their souls writ plain upon their faces. Others choose to keep their mask secret and safe, cherished and shown only to those they trust most in life. Many find somewhere to fall in between. Most find their masks are easy receptacles of power, and with time, will take enchantment more easily."

When the discussion falls to considering a mask, Laesah grows very quiet and introspective.

How do I mask myself when I already exist as two different parts? she frowns, pulling at her long braid. Do I dare split my psyche further?

Laesah opens her mouth to ask Teacher Ot a question, then stops and closes it with a frown, lost in her own musings.

Later on, in the kitchen at work, Laesah is preparing yams for the curry that will be served at dinner. Chef Yao approaches carrying a wooden tray containing three covered earthenware bowls. She sets them down, then bumps Laesah with her hip to pull her out of her thoughts.

Yao gives her a sly look from the corner of her heavily lidded eyes and says, "Tonight I need those chopped, not mashed, my dear. Why don't you tell me what's behind that mood of yours before some of it accidentally winds up in the food?"

Haunt cocks his head to one side. "If someone wanted to make better use of it, would they need to get permission first?"

Haunt will want to work on advancing in the Tempest-Sun Mages. Will we have any Downtime in addition to the time required for study? Because if so, Haunt will want to start cleaning up the tree stump library. We need a supervillain lair party headquarters, and this looks tailor-made for the job.

Ot nods and says, "As a teacher in good standing at this school, I think it wise that someone get the permission of the institution, yes. Additionally, as a teacher in good standing of this school, I could grant someone permission to make improvements upon the Tree Library, so long as those changes eventually serve to also enhance the Magaambya." He winks and adds, "Keep me in the loop, broadly, on what you plan, and I'll make sure it doesn't run afoul of the school."

You can spend time doing things besides studying during this period, though the rate will be slower (half speed) unless you are willing to take some negatives on the study check. If this is the main thing Haunt will do besides study you could probably tidy up the large room and two smaller ones. This just means they are relatively clean, not that they are in good repair or organized. Just getting things back to not trashed is going to take some time (and likely some skill checks), especially if you are going at it solo.

The curried yam dish gets passed over to another kitchen attendant that evening, and perhaps it's not as tasty as it might have been, but the head chef has her hands full, speaking with Laesah deep into the night.

Over the next few days, Laesah spends all of her waking hours either helping to tidy the newly-opened Tree Fort Clubhouse Library, or reading intently from the discarded knowledge therein. The anadi ravenously partakes of books on multiple subjects including history, religion, magic, and even planar travels. She wonders how she will keep her head afloat in all of this knowledge, but soon relaxes into it, realising that she doesn't have to fight.

She just needs to survive.

CRAM.

On the day of the exams, Laesah stands in front of a door she's not stood in front of before - that of her primary branch, the Rain-Scribes. Weary with exertion, Laesah's face wears a determined expression as she knocks on the door, receiving a sharp reply.

"Enter!"

Chef Yao gently lifts Laesah's chin and dabs at her tears with the towel that is always draped over her shoulder whenever she is in the kitchen. She looks the young anadi in the eye and says, "My sweet child, you're not divided, you are layered."

Yao reaches down and uncovers the bowls she placed on the table and a melange of rich smells fills the room. Inside each bowl are roasted seeds: Fennel, cumin, and coriander. Yao sets a large stone mortar and pestle on the table as well, pours in the coriander, and starts grinding it into paste.

"Each one of these ingredients is fragrant and delicious. I could take just one type and use it as a base to make a dish that would please almost anyone." The speed she moves at is practiced and perfectly efficient. After a quick moment she reaches out and adds the fennel. "But the secret to a curry is the layers. It's building depth and complexity and then building even more depth and complexity. Each layer is the product of hard work, skill, and care, and each layer celebrates the other."

She adds the cumin seeds and grinds them too. When that is complete, she hands Laesah the pestle and fetches another plate of bowls, uncovering them. Cinnamon, clove, mustard, peppers, turmeric, and more - A range of colors, flavors, and heat.

She smiles at Laesah and says, "Now, you get to grinding, dear. You're responsible for getting the layers right tonight, and I'll be here to help. We'll taste as we go, we'll adjust... And when in doubt, we'll add some garlic."

She gives Laesah's braid a tug of her own, winks, and says. "Don't let those fools make you think you need a mask to hide yourself, dear. Or to change yourself if you don't want to. Masks can be used to celebrate, too."

For the next month, Haunt spends his mornings continuing his sparring practice with Esi and his afternoons clearing out the broken shelves, rotten and rusty furniture (stack of bedframes, this means you), and moldy, silverfish-infested books from Tree Stump HQ. But most evenings, he works late into the night writing and building a miniature set from some of the broken furnishings.

Finally, when the time comes for examinations, he is ready. He sets up his small library and performs an original one-man show about the cohort's battle with the book-eating gremlins in the Stump, titled The Bibliophile's Nightmare, or The Death of Drellop. After the big finale, in which the doll playing the part of Drellop is crushed by a line of two-foot tall bookcases toppling like dominoes, and the amurrun stands before the doll representing the survivor, reaching out the paw of friendship, he looks up to gage the reaction of his teachers and (if any came to watch) friends and fellow students.

The tree stump work just sounds like manual labor to me at the moment, so you can throw an Athletics check down to see if you are particularly effective.

With the combined efforts of the group, the Tree Stump Library starts to clean up. There's still a ways to go, but it is starting to look better just by being less filled with obviously broken things.

By the way, where are you putting the broken things?

You all do quite well on your exams, passing convincingly. From your dorm, only Esi and Chizire are hitting the same marks as you. Immediately after tests, you have one night before the masking ceremony. Dinner is a celebration. Chef Yao has gone out of her way to prepare a feast for the students making their masks. You see trays of fish, stews, curries, and breads passing through the halls. Students raise cups of a red hibiscus drink, infused with cloves and lightly spiked, while eating balls of mashed plantains and plates of many types of rice. For dessert, older students, wearing their own masks proudly, bring around a black, fudgy cake, made of dried fruits soaked in rum.

At the end of dinner, there is no continued party. The same masked students take you and your peers back to their dorms, standing watch to make sure everyone gets a full night's sleep.

Handouts Tactical Map

The next morning, you rise and are escorted to the ceremony hall. All the teachers are arrayed, wearing their masks. You recognize teacher Ot from his customary robes and staff, though you might have guessed his identity from the simple wooden anteater mask. It is darkly varnished, but largely unadorned. It is, characteristically, smiling beneath its snout.

As you form a line before the teachers, you find your mask. Made of plain wood with simple eye slits, you can sense the magical properties, and intuitively know that this will respond to your will in a way the is different than crafting. You will communicate your intentions, experiences, and aspirations, and the mask will oblige as best it can. Containers of cloth, beads, feathers, and metals are all nearby, to allow you to add adornments as you desire.

You see all the students from the Spire dorm here. Esi looks proud, Haibram excited... Even Chizire looks like he's paying attention today. Among the gallery are many onlookers and staff. Chef Yao, A'mino, Hatsi, the mysterious strix from your first days can all be seen among the crowd.

Once everyone settles in, Teacher Ot steps forward to speak.

“Today you will make your first true mask. Each student’s mask is an embodiment of their learning and a reminder of the idea that, over time, people gain other names and faces. Although a mask is worn over the face, it is a reflection of who a person is underneath as well as a visualization of who the person hopes to become. The person beneath a mask has flaws, as all people do, but they also have hopes, dreams, and memories that define them."

"The ceremony itself will be conducted in several parts. First, the initiates will come forward with their cohort and will begin, with the teachers, the rituals necessary to mold and create one of these plain masks. The task is an artistic one, of course, for painting a mask or adorning it with beads or feathers is an artistic task, but your hands will be guided by your spirit—its final shape is what you will it to be."

“You will then hold your mask, meditating upon its meaning, as the rest of your cohort completes their masks. Your mask may change shape in your hands as you meditate; this is not unexpected, and it means your mask is attuning itself to you."

“Then, at my signal, all in your cohort will don your masks as one. You see the urn there—it is a receptacle for your beads, if you wish. You need not wear them any longer, for when you don your mask you cease to be an initiate and become an attendant of the Magaambya."

“Esi Djana, come forward with your cohort.”

Your dorm mates go first, with Esi, Anchor Root, and Chizire, in the first set; then Ignaci, Okoro, and Tzeniwe; then Haibram, Mariama, and Noxolo. Each group takes about half an hour to make their masks and don them before returning to their seats. All the teachers actively help the students shape their masks, especially Ot. Mafika helps less with shaping and more with morale, and Zuma takes great effort to help with the finishing touches and adornments. Koride, true to form, reserves her help for the students you know to be her favorites.

Handouts Tactical Map

Now it is your turn. Teacher Ot looks to your group and says, "Haunter of Monsters, come forward with your cohort."

What do you do? There are no crafting rolls needed here, but please take a moment to explain your process, and the outcome. Who do you take help from, if anyone? Laesah, Koride hovers near you, clearly waiting to help you if you want. Everyone, when you finish your creation, please roll a perception check.

After a convoluted conversation with a very confused blacksmith, Post-It and Much return to the dorms with the thinnest strips of metal the blacksmith can produce with hammer and magic. Then, under Post-It's watchful eye, Much cuts and creases the metal into an intricate frame for a wooden mask.

Settling down in front of her mirror with Post-It flitting nearby, Much pulls on her prototype mask.

The rough metal and wood mask covers Much's face beneath her eyes, transforming her visage.

Post-It transforms from a heart shape and delicately folded clapping hands.

Much's eyes scrunch up as she smiles beneath the mask.

"Not bad for a first try, eh? The next will be perfect!"

Back to the mask ceremony:

Finally!

Haunt leaps to his feet when he and his friends are called up. His mask forms the face of a lion, encircled by a wide, even mane. The mask's expression conveys good humor, with faint wrinkles on the cheeks and next to the eyes that look like laugh lines. The open mouth is too narrow to suggest a roar; rather, the king of beasts appears to have been frozen in the middle of a joke. After collecting the materials he needs, Haunt paints the face of his mask in tawny yellow and tan, and covers the mane in reds and oranges at the bottom, quickly brightening to gold for top and sides. He adds brighter streaks around the mane, as evenly as he can.

"It's to honor Tlehar, the Rising Sun." The amurrun explains to Ot. He points to his amulet, which has the face of the goddess on one side and her holy symbol on the other. "And the founder of the Tempest-Sun Mages, Azure Leopard."

Much stands after Haunt, checks her mask a final time, and dons it. The thin metal frame that Post-It helped her create supports many thin wooden pieces forming a mask that covers her face completely below her eyes. Unlike Haunt's, Much's mask is unpainted; natural woods cleverly fastened together to form the face of a proud badger.

"My mask honors diligence and tenacity and will serve as a reminder that strength can not overcome all things."

Laesah smiles at Much’s request, returning to her meditative seat in front of the jellyfish lamp in her rather sparsely-adorned dorm room. She points up, indicating an intricately-webbed nest adorning the ceiling where the anadi obviously spends some time. Post-it perches there, pulsing like a butterfly. At the mention of his name, the spellskein flutters down to light on Much’s head.

”Are we going to name our new Tree Fort? I think we should before someone else nicknames it. What ya thinking? A spider, a dog, and a cat sitting in a tree….” she muses in a singsong way with a giggle.

Laesah pads forward to the podium with Haunt and Much. She receives her blank mask and collects a large number of colourful items - paints, feathers, cloth - then places them at her work station. She nods wordlessly at Koride - as if indicating her preparedness - stands in front of the gathered crowd, and transforms into her full arachnid form.

With what appears to be practiced and focussed velocity and precision, Laesah swiftly constructs an unadorned framework as wide and broad as her arachnid head, a curious projected beak-form protruding out from the centre. Koride assists simply by offering pieces of wood and metal at first, then adorns her outstretched arms with drapes of fabric while holding fans of multicoloured feathers in both hands for the anadi to pick up and incorporate as she moves.

Somewhere in the furious build, Laesah's form begins to blur with speed as colour and motion imbue the mask, quivering slightly on its work-stand. Laesah's efforts impossibly accelerate further as she reaches a climax, snatching work materials from the usually-unflappable Koride rapidly enough with four appendages at a time. Apart from some feathery fluff, no discarded materials or scraps sully the workspace when finally, a full ten minutes later, Laesah abruptly stops - in full bipedal form.

Breathing heavily, Laesah turns to Teacher Ulawa, bows her head, and closes her eyes in deep gratitude. Koride, for her part, looks pleasantly ruffled and steps back from Laesah with a rare smile. The young lady then turns to face the crowd and stands behind her comically-large and out-of proportion mask. The central protrusion, painted blue, gently curves outward from the front of the mask, its form depicting the head and neck of a bird. The chaotic melange of colours, patterns, and textures festooning out from the remainder of the overly-large mask reveals its exact form.

A peacock.

GM:
When Laesah places the too-large peacock mask over her bipedal form, the mask should magically shrink to fit.

Ot looks at all of you with pride. All the teachers look pleased. Even Koride favors you with a smile.

Ot steps forward to continue the ceremony. "It is my great pleasure to name you all..." He trails off as a grinding sound builds all around you, drowning him out.

Then, he stumbles forward, steadying himself on his staff as the auditorium walls explode inwards with the weight of several giant beetles scrambling over one other. A flood of bugs follows them, a clicking, chittering, writhing mass that flows into the auditorium and throws the crowd into chaos.

Mafika is the first to act and begins to marshal the students and begin a defense. "To battle!" He shouts. "Form up and defend the crowd. Groups of four!" He spares a glance for your group and says, "Much, pick a fourth from among the students to join your group, and take care of those." He points off to a set of bugs turning towards the group with Chef Yao. The chef has a long knife in each hand, and is darting between giant bugs, scoring quick hits before fading away, barely staying in front of the snapping jaws."Quickly now!"

Much, please select one of your fellow students to join your group in this battle.

Laesah shakes herself into combat mode, falling into position with Much, Haunt, and Anchor Root.

Handouts Tactical Map

Anchor Root, doesn't move. She's still got her mask on - wood styled and colored to represent a hawk's skull - and you see tears fill her eyes as she glances back and forth at the carnage. Pelaksana, clawing the ground next to her, gives her a sharp peck on the foot. She winces, and looks down at the bird, then up at Much, and calms herself, taking strength from her pack. She bangs a small paw on her chest, bobs her head in a nod, and lets out a high-pitched, warbling giggle, falling in behind your group.

The auditorium is filled with oversized insects - many more than you could hope to defeat. Mafika, having organized a hasty defense with Zuma and the other students, is working to keep people alive, but the tide is nowhere near turned, and people run about in a panic. As you head to support Chef Yao, a group of bugs senses your arrival and turns to engage you.

There is a lot more going on that is depicted on the map, but for the sake of keeping things somewhat tidy (and so I don't have to make a jillion tokens) I've kept things limited to what your concerns are. The bugs on the left are occupied with Yao and a group of students. The ones on the right are coming for you. I'm going to let folks do a little repositioning before we get into it. Feel free to change your order and move up to 2 squares from where you have been placed. After that, we'll start according to the initiative.

The insects start to flow forward and attack, starting with the first giant centipede, who steps towards Laesah and lashes out with dripping mandibles.

Attack 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 121d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Attack 2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 191d4 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

The centipede can't keep up with Laesah, and even the attack that makes contact is too brief to do more than barely scrape her skin. However, that scrape contains a little poison.

Laesah, please roll a Fort save

DC 14 Fortitude save; Poison effect:
Stage 1: 1d6 poison damage (1 round)
Poison damage (if needed): 1d6 ⇒ 4

Next come the flash beetles, organs glowing slightly and buzzing over to try and flank Much. Much's stone rope flashes out at the first to get into range...

...And makes solid contact, squishing the insignificant insect. In a panic, the other flash beetle flares, sending out a pulse of bright light, threatening to dazzle the people closest to it.

Much, Leasah, and one giant centipede are all effected.

Much and Laesah, please roll me a DC 17 Fortitude save or be dazzled for 1 minute.

The giant beetle misses Much and rears back, searching for a new target. Before it can snap forward again, Haunt closes in, his uncanny intuition locking in on the nearly imperceptible crack in the carapace left from Much's previous hit. With savage quickness, Haunt leaps forward, thrusting his rapier into that crack, burying it up the hilt between the shimmering compound eyes of the beetle.

It sinks back down with a thud, and Haunt places his hand on the armored head. "It's afraid!" He calls out to his friends. Then he rips the blade out, killing the beast and catching a gout of ichor in the chest.

Across the auditorium, the decisive blows struck by your group have an immediate impact on the rest of the fighting. With how quickly you get your situation under control, the teachers can focus on helping the less combat ready students. Zuma magically wards a blow aimed at Ignaci, and the terrified student throws acid in the face of a flash beetle before diving under a bench. Haibram leaps atop a flying giant bee, wrestling it to the ground where Esi dispatches it. Teacher Ot sends a handful of glitterdust to distract a swarm and rushes some onlookers to safety, while Koride takes advantage of the dazed bugs and fries them with a bolt of electricity. Mafika saves himself for the scariest looking enemies, engaging them with staff and fire, dispatching them as quickly as possible.

Chef Yao raises an eyebrow when Laesah runs over and says, "Good timing, dear. I don't know how long I could keep this up." She's taken a wound to the leg that has to hurt, but still she nimbly bounces between the giant bugs, keeping them engaged with her and away from the members of the crowd that aren't able to flee.
