Oh this will definitely end in combat. I'll give Galimus an opportunity to resolve any character storyline issues before Lazlo recovers from his horror and goes ham on this guy.

"Say, 'friend' do you have other brains here."

"That is an excellent idea! Galimus, perhaps we could trade your brain with one of the brains we have here on file ... let's see ..."

The mi-go rummages through the brain cylinders and offers the following: a brains belonging to various servants of the Xarwin Manor ("volunteers", he cheerfully states), some brains "donated" by the local asylum, and, of course, Laurel's.

"There are the three family members in the lab, although, I'm not sure the master of the house would like that. No, no, he would not. Oh - and how silly of me - there's your original brain, upstairs, in the clock."

Mechanically, this is an opportunity to potentially unlock some of the lore. Just to skip a little back and forth, the mi-go would agree to switch your (current) brain with any of the above, as long as you'd agree to let him live so he can continue his experiments (you can decide whether you'd honor that deal). There are obviously risks (unknown risks), and I'm also intentionally vague on whether there's any other way to obtain the information that you'd get by brain switching.

I won't have no need for 'em then and youse might as well have as the worms and the crows," he says.

"No offense Sonny Boy," he says to Zoi.

If Galimus was in charge rather than Limus, this conversation would go much differently, but such is RPG's.

Galimus declines the mi-go's offer to saw his head open and remove his brain.

Narrative combat:

Frustrated, the mi-go lunges at the party, prepared to take Galimus's brain by force. Fundin jumps to intercept the creature, driving his warhammer into its skull. The Mysterious Stranger appears, slashing the mi-go with its scythe, while Galimus and Zoi pelt it with spells.

Several times, it grabs its targets, attempting to open up their heads with a swift slash across the forehead. While it bloodies some, it ultimately falls to a lifeless heap.

End of combat!

The collection of books and papers on this room’s shelves predominantly cover the topics of anatomy, surgery, and a wide range of experimental and mostly unethical experiments.

DC 24 Medicine or Occultism:
Anyone who spends 8 hours reading these books will gather enough notes to learn the extract brain ritual.

Although the description is geared towards removing a brain from a living body, I'm making an OOC offer to allow the use the ritual to switch out Galimus's brain to accomplish the same feat as the mi-go was offering (it would have auto-succeeded the check, that's all).

Xarwin had heavily annotated many of these books. A character can use these annotations to Research Ioseff Xarwin, Asethanna Xarwin, Fulvia Nostraema, the Dominion of the Black, and the Order of the Starless Night.

The unlocked metal coffer on the shelf to the west holds the third module for the brainclock upstairs. It's the speech module, and allows you to speak with the brain inside the clock.

Among the equipment on the southern table is a set of expanded alchemist’s tools, a pair of alchemist goggles, and a spare lens for the starless scope.

The mi-go's attack finally jolts him into action

"You monster! The kid may not have a lot of brains but they belong in his head, not in that cannister." The stranger appears and attacks, Lazlo joins him, attacking far more recklessly than ever before and not stopping until well after the creature is long dead.

Afterwards he picks up Laurel's cylinder and stares at it for a moment speaking quietly. "Stupid kid, why would you go off on your own like that. We should have..." Shaking his head he hands the receptacle to Fundin and turns away to search the room far from the rest of the party.

This technique might even allow us to place Galimus's brain back into his skull."

The quartet moseys northward, making a stop in the library to the west to defeat two corrupted esobok psychopomps (the "monster dogs").

Moving further north (Slide 3), the group reaches a large cavern. The air of this sprawling cavern is cold, moist, and glowing; soft, green light emanates from no discernible source. Moisture glistens on the walls and floor, and much of the cavern’s central portion is taken up by a wide but shallow pool of water, which smells brackish and foul. Anyone who drinks from it becomes sickened 1.

In the pool, the bones of what seems like over a dozen humans have been strewn. Even a cursory examination reveals that the people whose bones these belonged to died gruesome, horrible deaths.

Of course, when the malevolence awoke, the unquiet spirits here were torn apart and stitched back together, bound to the bones they left behind and transformed into a grotesque, clattering monstrosity, which rises up from the waters of the pond. Hundreds of skeletons emerge from the depths, crawling into a heap strung together by thick tangles of slimy black ectoplasm, their arms reaching forward to grasp at the living.

With a gasp, Fundin realizes that many of the deeper bones, the ones that were discarded in the fetid pool earliest, are dwarven.

Feel free to resolve this combat narratively.

Black ectoplasm melts away from the tangled bones, both its color and its magical potency dissipating harmlessly into the water. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of bones, litter the pond. Fundin looks down at a skull near to him, and it's squat, sturdy shape causes him to recoil in horror - it's a dwarven skull. As he begins desperately looking through the mass of bones, he finds dozens of dwarven skulls.

The sound of digging draws everyone's attention to the far wall, and through an eruption of loose dirt, two small polydactyl forepaws emerges, and then the remainder of small mole makes its appearance. Fundin kneels immediately, recognizing the sacred animal of his god, Magrim. The animal shuffles forward, awkwardly, unused to moving without simultaneously digging.

On the far wall, where it emerged, stands traces of an ancient stone arch, chiseled away by later workers.

The mole looks at Fundin, who immediately falls into a trance.

Fundin:
Ioseff's voice booms over the sound of incessant chiseling. "FASTER!" he exhorts. A small band of men with chisels and hammers pound on the western wall, striking at the elaborately-carved runes on the arch.

"FASTER!" he yells again, this time at the workers who are digging at the cavern floor, unearthing dwarven corpses. Each wears a butterfly amulet, made up of dozens of individual sapphires and diamonds, a holy symbol of Desna for the buried servants of the Order of the Starless Night. The bodies of the dwarves who were carefully buried within the caverns they had carved out were again laid to rest, but far less respectfully - thrown into a makeshift pit, once all their valuables had been stripped.

The workers who gleefully gathered the wealth for Ioseff were rewarded, by being allowed to slaughter their fellow workers who had only reluctantly unearthed the bodies. Of course, they were surprised when their loyalty to Ioseff was then betrayed, their bodies being thrown into the pit on top of the dwarves and the bodies of the fellow workers they had just helped murder. Piled into the pit, their broken bones - and broken spirits - were crushed together into an unholy mass, slowly corrupted by the evil below.

---

The mole continues looking at Fundin, and begins chirping.

This was a holy place, a dwarf's voice in Fundin's mind speaks. And then, it was an unholy place. Now, it is only a place. Dozens of bodies need to be sorted. Each needs a grave, and a tombstone. The Starless Arch needs to have its runes re-carved. Who shall take up the mantle of Magrim? Who shall complete His will?

He says nothing, when they hear the mole he runs to it, and grabs the creature in his big hands. His body stiffens as he sees the vision, that he narrates to the others.

For a moment he falls to the ground breathing heavily. "I need to stay here and sort this out. Those bodies need a proper burial. Their souls need to depart this place and be on their way. The Starless Arch needs fixing."

He sits up and looks around himself, so much work...

Fundin has seen the last room, already - it's the area underneath the Cosmic Crypt.

The walls of this 10-foot-high irregular cavern are adorned with ancient carvings—images of stars, comets, and moths near the ceiling. Near the ground, images of monstrous shapes appear buried deep underground.

A 10-foot-wide hole in the ceiling leads up into darkness. There is a set of handholds that leads up from the mouth of the hole. 10' off the ground.

The creature in the corner appears in a fugue state while she stands motionless in the southeastern alcove, but as soon as she notices the intruders, she shakes off a thick layer of dust from her bones and deep blue robes. Pale green ectoplasm drips from her bones and causes her long, white hair to writhe about her head as if underwater.

She spreads her arms wide as if to invite someone into an embrace and looks right at Zoi. She says, “The Guide! You have brought them right to me. Step forward and claim your reward! Embrace me, and become one with the Lord Below!

Zoi make a DC 25 Will save, and roleplay the result.

Success The creature is unaffected and is temporarily immune to Compel Condemned for 24 hours.
Failure The creature must spend each of its actions to move closer to the catrina as quickly as possible, while avoiding obvious dangers. If the compelled creature is adjacent to the catrina, it stays still and doesn't act. If the creature takes any damage, the effect ends and the creature is temporarily immune to Compel Condemned for 24 hours. This effect lasts for 1 round, but if the catrina uses this ability again on subsequent rounds, it extend the duration by 1 round for all affected creatures.
Critical Failure As failure, but damage does not end the effect.

This normally triggers initiative, but depending on Zoi's save, I will allow for any narrative resolution, including wrestling her to the ground for questioning.

Zoi begins digging in the sand near the base of the crypt, soon uncovering a large metal frame exactly the size of the Void Mirror. With some effort from the rest, the mirror is affixed in place. As the last screw is tightened, and the last shim hammered to properly orient the mirror, a bone-chilling howl of frustration and pain fills the air as Ioseff’s ghost rises up from the ground near the mirror.

Fundin grabs his warhammer, Galimus's fingertips surge with magical energy, Lazlo crouches into a defensive stance, and Zoi's eyes begin channeling power. Ioseff makes a move as if to attack, but a tangle of long, spidery legs made of blood-red ectoplasm reaches up from the ground around him and pierces his ghostly body in a dozen places. A moment later, an immense set of toothy jaws rises up to swiftly close around him. Ioseff screams in agony as this ectoplasmic manifestation of Tchekuth consumes his soul, absorbs his memories, and then retreats back into the deep below, once again slumbering as long as the Void Mirror remains in place.

The groups' hearts race for several minutes, anticipating an attack that never manifests. Slowly, over time, their arms begin to tire, and weapons are anticlimatically sheathed.

The first to notice the abrupt change in weather is none other than Marin, Laurel's mother. She has never seen this transformation in person, but she's read about it in the annals that have been passed down from generation to generation, the foretelling of the re-rising of Tchekuth and the need for the Order of the Starless Night to be once more. She buries Laurel's remains underneath an oak sapling in the front of the manor, laying her own starknife to mark the final resting spot of her only son.

Distance from the nearest major city make it an ideal sheltering spot for travelers along the coast, and the manor offers magnificent views, both for aesthetic and defensive purposes, of the surrounding seas.

Still, for all the efforts of everyone involved, those that braved the horrors of Xarwin Manor know all of these outcomes only delay the inevitable, for as long as Tchekuth slumbers below, his threat remains.

Galimus stays, as well, if only so that he can talk to the brain clock. He spends much of his time researching in the mi-go's lair, trying to determine exactly how he came to be as he was and how he might change. Even if he wanted to change.

Of course, you can't set up house within site of the prison of an eldritch horror without thinking about it so he also sticks around to make sure that Tchekuth never awakens.

It is almost a surprise to him when he realizes that he is a member of the newly reformed Order of the Starless Night.

He notices Zoi's absence at some point, but simply assumes the enigmatic man went about his business and followed his quest elsewhere without saying goodbye.

Lazlo frequently uses the communication device to speak with Laurel's imprisoned brain. He spends a considerable amount of time and effort trying to ethically procure a body suitable for the boy. Perhaps some sort of construct...?
