Want to know how brutal it is? The 27 ... misses.

The ghost laughs maniacally at the ineffective attacks from the Mysterious Stranger and Fundin, and from the ineffective threat from Lazlo.

"Do you even know what fear is?" he asks Lazlo. He waves his hands and casts a spell. DC 28 Will save.

Critical Success:

Failure:

Critical Failure:
The target is so afraid it might die. It must attempt a Fortitude save; if the target fails, it dies. On a successful Fortitude save, the target takes 12d6 mental damage, is fleeing until the end of its next turn, and is frightened 4.

Galimus, although a glimmer of light in his eyes shows some understanding of what is happening, raises his hands and calls lightning onto Fundin and the Mysterious Stranger.

The flapping of wings continues to crescendo, as whatever is making the noise enters the basement. A tiny wing appears at the door, and then a second, and then dozens. A swarm of tiny nosoi psychopomps fills the corridor outside, screeching in unison as they gather.

Zoi recognizes the swarm, it is a psychopomp algea. These creatures are usually sent to protect souls at risk of being claimed by other entities, particularly spellcasters who dabbled with otherworldly forces but never officially pledged their souls. The swarm is not an ally to the party, but it is not a foe either. Mechanically, it will function as a third combatant, and there will be some area-of-effect things that will affect, but not target, the PCs. Further information can be gleaned using Recall Knowledge (Religion).

Ghost Fortitude: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16

LOL, could have used that crit fail sooner. Combat will be over, but some things are going to happen.

The ghost jams his right finger into Fundin's brain, sinking in to the wrist.

Fundin:
Ioseff's voice booms over the sound of incessant chiseling. "FASTER!" he exhorts. A small band of men with chisels and hammers pound on a wall, striking destructively at the elaborately-carved runes on the arch.

"FASTER!" he yells again, this time at the workers who are digging at the cavern floor, unearthing dwarven corpses. Each wears a butterfly amulet, made up of dozens of individual sapphires and diamonds, a holy symbol of Desna for the buried servants of the Order of the Starless Night.

The dwarven corpses are unmercifully raided, their jewels ripped from their bodies, which are then thrown into a giant makeshift pit, once all their valuables had been stripped.

The workers who gleefully gathered the wealth for Ioseff were rewarded, by being allowed to slaughter their fellow workers who had only reluctantly unearthed the bodies. Of course, they were surprised when their loyalty to Ioseff was then betrayed, their bodies being thrown into the pit on top of the dwarves and the bodies of the fellow workers they had just helped murder. Piled into the pit, their broken bones - and broken spirits - were crushed together into an unholy mass.

The vision ends abruptly as the ghost gasps.

"NO!"

Zoi lifts his arms and a wave of positive energy flows out from his body. His body nearly turns translucent as a rush of power fills the room, drowning out the squealing of the nosoi swarm.

The light from Zoi's spell creates lights and shadows in the room, a bright point of light for every nosoi that flutters about, and a dark shadow where the ghost of Ioseff once stood. Zoi's space is filled with a brilliant light, as is Fundin's, Lazlo's, and the Mysterious Stranger. But Galimus's space is dark.

Ioseff's darkness begins to fade, and his ectoplasmic green glow does as well. A thousand lights swarm about Zoi like fireflies in the night sky.

Zoi:
"Well done, Guide," a voice speaks into his mind. Zoi can't quite place where he's heard it, but it's calming, soothing, and feels like home.

"Yianyin can help you to complete the task. She is lost, but can be found."

As Zoi's light dies down, the ghost is no more. The nosoi depart as suddenly as they arrived, the beats of their tiny wings getting softer and softer as they stream out of the room and back out of the house.

Any trace of the ghost has vanished.

End of encounter.

Ioseff’s skeletal remains cradle the starless scope. You previously acquired replacement lenses from the grioth cultists.

A search of Ioseff’s remains reveals a +1 chain shirt, a wand of spiritual weapon, a wand of soothe (2nd), a +1 striking dagger, and a ventriloquist’s ring on his remaining hand.

The scrawled scrolls on his desk include a scroll of internal insurrection, along with Ioseff’s notes that he hoped to use his deciphering of the alien spell to save himself. The notes trail off before he could finish his thoughts ...

The collection of books kept on the shelves here are well suited toward Researching the topics of the Ashen Man, the Dominion of the Black, the Order of the Starless Night, the starless scope, Tchekuth, and the Void Mirror. Among these books are some of Ioseff’s most private confessions. This room is meant as a capstone to the research - when you want to look through, I'll make Research checks for everyone, but I'll also solicit any questions you have about the story (I know it's been a while so I could also provide a full accounting of the backstory).

Amid these books, the group also finds volumes that they can use to perform the inveigle ritual. I'm not super interested in mechanically performing this ritual, as I find the mechanics somewhat too dependent on die rolls for my liking - consider the level limitation and material requirements waived, if you want to perform it, I'll resolve it narratively. Ioseff's notes indicate that he had the intention of using the ritual to controll the undead brain collector, and force it to merge his family's consciousnesses with his own. He was mere weeks away from being able to fulfill his lifelong plan.

Putting Ioseff's spirit to rest involves several steps, aside from defeating him in combat. The steps were revealed in a previous research reveal, listed here.

As a side note, with Ioseff's defeat, there are two combat encounters which are now moderately extraneous - the "monster dogs" encounter and the crawling hands encounter. I'm happy to run through them, but I'm also happy to skip them as well since they don't advance the plot. Your (plural) choice.

I am good with skipping as we just defeated the BBEG. Leave it on a high note!

Zoi slumps to the ground, his wings a bit disheveled. "What was that and where did it come from?" He looks about wildly.

To be clear, there are a few more "essential" encounters, but all relate to your characters / backstories.

Fundin falls to his knees, his hammer falling to the ground, as he breathes heavily. He looks at the faces of the others, and for now says nothing.

That was brutal! I think that without help of psychopomps Ioseff would mope the floor with our bodies ;)

"It done gone where it came from, that's all I know, and all that matters," Galimus says, his posture and demeanor stooped and skulking.

He looks around at the group then quickly moves to the body. The gory nature of the remains don't seem to affect him and he begins rifling through them and pocketing everything of value.

As the ghost is vanquished, Lazlo leans against a nearby wall and slowly sinks to a sitting position. His brush with death seems to have had a profound effect on him. His eyes are haunted and his once jet black hair is now streaked with white.

The Cloaked Figure turns and points towards Lazlo.

"Hoc non est quietis tempus. Tempus est tibi hoc perficere."

Requian:
This is not the time to rest. It is time for you to finish this.

They gesture towards Ioseff's remains and slowly fade away.

Do we have the brains of Asethanna and the both of the children? I remember getting 2 but not the third. Also do we know how to lay them to rest?

You have three brains contained within the pods of the statue in your current room. While you haven't identified them, let's just say that two of the brains are a bit smaller than the adult-sized third one.

I can force-move you to the next room. If you want to rest, you can (I'll make some Research checks), but those trained in Occultism may know that ghosts, if not put to rest permanently, might rise again, e.g., the clock is ticking on that aspect.

I think we'll want to finish off the ghost as soon as possible. We likely need to do something to allow the souls of Asethanna and the children to move on to the Boneyard, and then we need to return the Void Mirror to its place in the Cosmic Crypt and that should suffice to put down Ioseff's spirit permanently.

Rough as we are, I think we should push on. I don't want to do that fight again, even if we're better prepared for it.

Agreed. Putting souls to rest is what Fundin cares about!

The group takes some time to Treat Wounds and moves on. Down the corridor, they face two crawling hands. After the combat with Ioseff, the defeat of the hands is swift, and the corridor is clear after a short battle.

To the east (Slide 2, red area), the tunnel is collapsed. Although the tunnels once led deeper into the underground area, there is evidence that someone took some time trying to dig out the rubble, only to lose their nerve when the debris shifted ominously. Instead of risking the collapse of the whole manor, the digger abandoned the the excavation.

To the west of the juncture, the corridor bends, and a set of double doors indicates a continuation to the north, but an open space to the west of the junction (Slide 2, teal area) is worth exploring.

Slide 1 for zoom-in.

Part of this room’s eastern area overlooks a larger space to the west, set off from the rest of the room with an elegant, iron railing. Two short flights of stairs descend 5 feet to the room beyond, which appears to be a combination of a library, a workshop, and a surgery room. Books line the stone shelves along the western walls, and a small iron coffer sits in the middle on a semicircular platform. Alcoves to the north and south feature shelves filled with strange objects.

A pair of workbenches to the north stand on either side of a stool; the tops of these workbenches appear covered with several empty glass jars and partially constructed metal cannisters. To the south, alchemical tools and glassblowing equipment cover a long, stone table. In the middle of the room, a metal and wooden operation table features surgical tools along with several restraint bits that rest nearby. Rivulets of phosphorescent green fluid dribble up the stone walls to pool in glowing puddles on the ceiling above.

DC 25 Occultism:
Long ago, the ancient Desnans used this chamber as a library, but when Ioseff took over the site, he set it up as a place to research and perform the process of extracting and preserving living brains at the operation table.

In the room, a strange fungal creature that the group previously identified as a mi-go polishes equipment, organizes devices, and keeps the tools ready for use.

Upon sighting the visitors, the mi-go welcomes them with its buzzing voice.

"Galimus! Welcome home. Are you ready to cast aside the limitations of flesh and to begin your new life? And I see you brought friends. Well, the more the merrier! I'm not sure I have enough brain cylinders, but I think I can free up some space."

The mi-go begins rummaging through the drawers, pulling out brain cylinders.

One is labeled, "Laurel Desna." It contains a particularly small specimen. *waves to rainzax, if he's still around, or reading this in the future*

"This one might not be worth keeping. I think we can toss it."

Galimus doesn't remember much, but the green goo looks - and smells - very familiar. His dreams about floating in goo are set in this room.

"No, no, Galimus, your brain is not your brain. It is our brain. Thank you for keeping it safe all these years, but I insist you return it, right now."

The mi-go gestures towards the table, where Galimus is expected to lie down and have his brain removed.
