We can't post anything from the written adventure yet, but we can start to RP and get a feel for each other's characters.

The Pathfinder Society has handed you another mission, this one seems to be gathering a large group of Pathfinder agents on the edge of the Mwangi Forest.

Despite wherever you started from, you wound up on the Singing Whale, a large galley, headed to the Sodden Lands with another group of Pathfinders. This close to the Eye of Abendego, the rain is near non-stop, driving most people inside or below deck.

The ship has a rather large mess hall which proves to be where people hang out the most, it not being unlike a tavern, with drink, if you have the coin, and regular meals, included in the price of transport. It does provide a great opportunity to get to know people.

Feel free to introduce yourselves. You have been on the ship for a month or so and might know each other, but it's big enough you could be meeting for the first time too.

Herondal is a average height handsome Gnome. He has been trying to get some of the crew and passengers to participate in a play he wrote called 'The Goblin King's sewer kingdom'. It is supposed to be dramatic and full of pathos but several of the participants keep turning it into a farcical comedy, Perhaps unintentionally.

Of course a few passengers do show some talent...

Crunch is an imposing figure - for a goblin. Three-and-a-half feet of armor, shield, and weapons, even during the long trip.
They keep everything polished, taking particular pride in the appearance of their shield, which displays the hammer of Torag (with spikes at the three ends).

They are happy to make suggestions on ways to improve the play, since they were there and know the King of the Flooded Court personally.

Pyotr, a portly, bespectacled Ulfen fellow, gladly joins in the play. He isn't much to look at, with his animal hides and glasses that can't conceal a look in his eyes as if he's forgotten how he got on this boat. Still, he's been friendly enough and has a winning personality, even if he doesn't have everyone convinced of his sanity. He boarded with a small white dog in tow, but it seems to prefer braving the torrential rain over long periods of his company.

"You know, I believe I was privy to the events of this play," he says to no one in particular after a practice session. "Perhaps I transcribed one of your mission reports, or was part of a follow-up team? It's all running together, not that would I have it any other way! Such a novel topic."

The Golden Serpent Maps | Actions: ◆ | ◇ | ↺

Quite a few of the crew roped into the play jump at the opportunity as soon as they hear about a 'king' hoping to make fun of some far off monarch.

They read through the script and seem a little crestfallen at the realization it's a serious play, not some raunchy or rowdy thing. They are further disappointed by the fact that the king is a goblin, and any good sailor in these parts knows that goblins ain't no laughing matter. They made some of the most vicious pirates.

Luckily before the play gets too far into it's production, with sailors barely make an attempt to read lines, there's a loud, "LAND-HO!" from the deck, and everyone rushes outside.

A rare occurance, the sodden lands aren't being pelted with rain, and actually have a few rays of sun streatming through the clouds. The Captain looks at his passengers, "Well, looks like Gozreh is smiling on your adventure. Don't get sun here much more than 30-40 days a year, and this one looks to hold a few days, given how the Eye was looking earlier."

The crew loads you into small rowboats and ferries everyone to the shore, where trails and footprints lead up into the near by forest.
Taking a moment to reorient yourself to the non-moving land, you recall why you ended up here. The Society had been preparing for at least the past month for an expedition into the Mwangi Expanse readying to trek to the Door of Seasons, a portal that rumor says is the very reason the Pact of the Open Road and thus the Pathfinder Society itself exists. Other chatter has been mentioning that a certain powerful evil fey, the Thorned Monarch Qxal, has been trying to keep the Society from accessing this portal.

You break through some thick undergrowth to find a camp. Pathfinders hurry around the makeshift camp, packing and unpacking supplies, making repairs, and scribing scrolls. The atmosphere is excited but tinged with some trepidation. Venture-Captain Oraiah Tolal from Nirmatha, who you’ve been told is the lead for this expedition, moves about ensuring everyone has an assignment and is working on it. A religious symbol of Alseta—goddess of doorways, portals, thresholds, and transitions—hangs from her neck, showing two faces in profile. Picture in the slides, Slide 6

She spots your group of six, recognizing that you’ve just got here yourselves. “Ah, there you are. We were expecting you a day or so ago. Well, nevermind. There’s a rest spot over there, with some trail rations and fresh drinking water. After you’re ready, we could use all the help we can get.”

She pauses for a moment before starting to point out some likely familiar faces. “Over there Venture-Captain Bjersig is working on getting maps together. Then there’s Valias Durant researching about the Expanse and what we are likely to run into. Urwal is trying to ensure we have enough supplies and inventory, while Venture-Captain Khoumrock is trying to finish up last minute repairs. Fola Braun is working on making sure our magical supplies are in order. Finally Venture-Captain Benarry is trying to make sure spirits are high near the rest area. I’m sure any one of them would appreciate the help.”

So for the next two days (in real life) we have some time to try to finish up preparations for the expedition leaving tomorrow (in game time). You can go to any of the listed people on slide six and try to help them prepare and possibly gain some benefits for it. Feel free to give some roleplay and follow up with a roll for one of the listed skills, each is a DC 20. Everyone can try one check for each leader. Aiding is okay, but you forgo your chance to roll for that leader if you do so. A success will give you a boon and a critical success a greater version.

And we're off! The House GM wasn't able to post exactly at the start time, but said we could get moving then. I'll be busy for the next few hours myself so I wouldn't be able to post immediately after him either

Tbh I just joined because this was in the right tier. After reading the blurb it might be worth pointing out that Herondal is Fey. It might come up at some point. I also forgot to mention that Harondal always wears a mask. Haven't played him in awhile.

Herondal's mask changes to the face of a smiling old man.

"Ah. Glad to be around more people who appreciate Entertainment. I look forward to this."

After hearing the speech Herondal replies.

"Lots to do. I'm sure I can be of some use."

He wanders around providing help where he can.

"Calisro! How have you been? I heard you were working on raising spirits of the living kind. No time for the whole thing but I'm sure a scene or two from my new play will entertain."

Tapi is a chameleon gnome but also has the Fey trait, thanks to the feat from that one scenario. In case that matters.

Tapi takes a break from chronicling and drawing whatever interesting things are happening around the ship to get a-helping.

He heads to Bjersig first, recognizing him form the Balgirdtrek. Unfortunately he's not very fluent in sign language yet, so he hopes the translator is nearby. "I'm not especially great at mapping things, but I could help with the logistics maybe?" I'm not great at any of these, so I'm just going to offer to Aid someone else on this check. Unless I could maybe roll Bardic Lore, in which case I'd roll myself?
Perception to Aid: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Nevermind. Tapi spends the whole time petting Mahki instead of being helpful. "Who's the best mapping pup in the society? You are! Yes you are!"

After that, Tapi will wander over to Urwal. "Hello there Urwal, how are the stars looking? Let see if I can help with these supplies..."
Society: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20

From there he'll quickly hop over to the magical supplies to continue inventory. "Lady Braun, might I be of assistance? I'm pretty well versed in Occult items if that could help at all."
Occultism: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (15) + 15 = 30

When that's taken care of, he'll look over to Khoumrock and break out his crafting tools. "Hoy there, Blackthane. How fares the Unsinkable? Hope things are less exciting than they were the last time she sailed 'round these parts."
Crafting: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24

Once repairs are all finished, Tapi will break out his tome-o-everything and makes his way excitedly over to Durant once he spots her. "Oh there you are! I heard you're working on researching the Expanse! Let me see what I can do to help!"
Society: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13

Tapi gets a bit too excited recounting all the stories he knows about the Mwangi, spouting off unimportant details more than helping. He keeps this enthusiasm going though and begins telling the tales to the crowd surrounding Captain Benarry. It might not be factually relevant, but it's morale boosting. Hopefully.
Performance: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (17) + 16 = 33

It seems the stories were pretty exciting to people who don't care so much about information being useful.

Calisro is laughing some at the act on stage as Herondal approaches. "Herondal! It's good to see you! How have you been? Seen any where new or interesting? For me, it's been a bit too much same-old same-old. Glad to finally get to travel somewhere new! You want to take a crack at entertaining us? Feel free to, seems this act is just finishing. Seems some of the newest Pathfinders are a bit nervous and somethign to take their minds off it would help."

During the performance, there's a few tears in the audience as the climatic scene takes place. After a bit, quite a few of the neophyte Pahtfinders come up and shake your hand, before Calisro herself comes up, wiping a few tears from her eyes. "Never realized that the tragedy behind the Flooded King would be so moving! I'm sure these guys would be willing to give you a hand if you ever needed it. Also, taking a moment or two longer to really let the fact that she died sink in before the King starts wailing would make that whole scene much more heart wrenching!"

Success! Once during the adventure, each of you can receive a +1 circumstance bonus to one skill check or attack roll, representing a fellow young Pathfinder succeeding at a check to Aid them. You must decide to use this benefit before rolling.

Venture Captain Bjersig is busy shuffling maps about as Herondal comes up. His faithful companion, Mahki looks up as the gnome gets closer and then barks while nudging Bjersig. He looks up abruptly and looks around for a second before spotting the pathfinder trying to help. While gesturing in Pathfinder signs he says, "I’m verifying all of our maps against what we can see from here. Landmarks can easily change. Why don’t you see if you can find any discrepancies?"

Pointing out places and making sure to speak facing Bjersig, he quickly records the discrepancies and updates the maps quickly enough to get a team onto copying them out for various groups.

A Crit Success! You got a Survey Atlasfor all of the encounters in the next part.

Radiant Oath faction leader Valais Durant oversees a small army of Pathfinders poring over books and scrolls. A few use magical methods to absorb information even faster. She looks over at Herondal, “Oh good, you’re here to help! I was able to get these reference materials from local institutions. There’s information on local plants, animals, and fey that I couldn’t get at home. We’re about to face a lot of dangers. Choose your favorite topic and start reading."

She pauses as the gnome starts to speak extemporaneously, "I'm sorry dear, but we don't know if the fey you'll find here are the same as where you're from. If you want to pick up a book that would help!"

Sadly a failure

Urwal lays across a large rock, making marks on a scroll that stretches over 10 feet long. He looks over at Herondal upside down and blinks for a moment. “This is our supplies list. Everything from rations to ammunition to the mounts needed to transport it all with us. We need to ensure that we know where everything is. I’m not letting anyone try to forage while we’re traveling. Here take this section and see if we have the things on it, or go scrounge some up while we have time!” He tears off a long section of the list and hands it over to the masked gnome. Most of the items on it are readily found in the stacks of supplies or replacements found in the nearby forests.

Reporting back, Urwal tacks your section back onto the main list and gives a small tch. "Seems we packed too many healing items. But better to have too much than not enough. Here take a few, just in case."

Another Success, everyone can choose between a moderate antidote or moderate antiplague.

Fola Barun directs a group of Pathfinders who are carefully blending magic and ingredients inside glass vials. She hands Herondal a funnel, bottle of bubbling green substance and a few vials. “Come help us ensure that everyone is well supplied for this journey.” After a moment, she walks by and frowns slightly. "Those are a bit too full Herondal! We only need them 3/4s full or they'll expand too much and pop the cork in the heat."
A failure.

Venture-Captain Khoumrock Blackthane ensures that groups of smiths and carpenters accompanying the Pathfinders have everything they need. He quickly guides Herondal to the nearest forge and gives the forge master your services for running and fetching things. “A lot of this gear got damaged on the voyage over. We need to make sure that everything is in tip-top shape.”

After just a few trips, exausted from helping everyone else, Herondal has to throw in the towel an head back to the rest area. Another failure.

Pyotr ambles off just before the VC's speech is over, but it looks as if he got the gist of it.

He first makes his way to Calisro Benarry and a gaggle of metaphorically greener Pathfinders. He cuts over her with an inspired shout. "Come on now, what business do you all have moping? With so many of us there's little to fear. It's not like this 'Monarch' can match the wrath of our resident pirate working sober!"

Deception, Morale: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25

The Ulfen then tries helping out VC Bjersig, loudly relaying orders for certain maps. Either he somehow remembers the man is deaf or he's just naturally noisy.

Then to Valais Durant. "You know, I think one of my cousins ran into this fey blighter, but she didn't take good notes. Shall we see how hearsay matches up?"

Society, Research: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17

By the time he reaches Urwal, he looks more alert. "These records don't match your current stockpile," he says, before even looking at he papers he's referencing. "Have someone flag down the last one to take these, we may have a snack thief on our hands."

Society, Inventory: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

"Pyotr, I don't think we've met," he greets Fola Barun. "I heard you called for an arms dealer? Don't worry, I peddle the most powerful weapon of all - information."

Occultism, Magical Supplies: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16

After reeling off an impressive amount of knowledge barely related to the subject at hand, Pyotr is left winded as he trudges over to Khoumrock. "I'm no strongman by trade, as my family will repeat to no end, but that's by choice. In these trying times my full physical power is yours to command!"

Athletics, Repairs: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11

He is quick to pick up a hammer, and quicker still to miss a nail in favor of his hand. But at least he doesn't cry out (while Blackthane is watching). Tired after having done his best, he goes back to milling around wherever the largest concentration of agents are.

Tapi tries to help with the corrections, but he proves to be more of a distraction than help. With the Aid Action, it's a DC 20, and if you Crit fail (as you did here with that nat 1) it imparts a penalty instead. Luckily, Herondal rolled high enough that it doesn't matter here, just be careful

Barun perks up, "You are? We have this small medallion that keeps popping up in the supplies despite everyone swearing they tossed it away..."

It proves to be a small curse that someone might use to prank and scare someone, and is easy enough to dispel. Fola watches with interest and seems relieved to have it gone. "We should be able to focus on making things now. Thank-you! Here take some of our potions, we'll be able to make more."
Crit Success, everyone starts with 2 Moderate Healing Potions

Tapi is able to get a bundle of cold iron ammunitions fixed up, and Blackthane sends him on his way with the supplies.

The half-orc captain puts Tapi on stage immediately and the stories bolster the cheer making a great counter point to the moving story of Herondal.

A Crit Success! The new pathfinders give a +2, not a +1. You still need to announce you are using it before rolling.

My fingers are dying, please forgive me for the shorter response.

Calriso pops the third bard on stage and he performs admirably, keeping the Pathfinders relaxing there entertained.
Success, but no change in benefits

Bjersig sadly misses most of what Pytor is saying as the forgetful one shouts things in profile or worse facing away, making it hard for the venture captain to read his lips, or even realize the man is speaking most of the time.
Failure

The moment the word hearsay leaves his mouth, Durant has him turned around and marched away from her area. "Nope, nope, no. You're the third person today who's tried to give me probably unreliable information!"

Sadly also a failure.

Urwal hands the man a small list of items. "I could swear we had these, but two gnomes have not been able to find them. Maybe you can?" Pytor does dig up a few minor items, but for the most part can't find the missing things.
Another Success but no change in rewards.

Fola takes Pytor's hand and gives it a shake. "Pleasure to meet you, but we already have enough hands at this as is, and teaching you the process would take more time than you'd help. I'm sorry."
A failure

Blackthane sets the ulfen to carrying things, but the trip has tired Pytor more than he'd expected and quickly he's sitting next to Herondal in the rest area. Sadly not enough.

I've marked off the three areas where the highest level of rewards have been earned already, and added a page to the slides with benefits where you can make decisions on what to take or mark of items/bonuses you've used.

Urwal gives a happy nod and hands over a form with various stars and constellations notarized on it, but Delorn is able to recognize and read the iruxi numerals that some tribes prefer to use. After a moment of math, you find his numbers are correct.

A success, but at this point on a Crit would change things.

Blackthane gives a hearty laugh, claps the human on the back and says, "Just fetch what they tell you to and you'll do fine!" The clap, being closer to a slap, does sting a bit and hurts how quickly Delorn can bring in supplies to repair.

Oh great. I was worried if I messed with it that it would mess up the dice roll or something. I'll keep that in mind for the future.

I'm not sure the group has met up as an actual team yet. If so / when that happens, I have an Archaic Wayfinder that I load up with message and hand off to someone who is prone to sneak off or scout ahead but doesn't have a way to communicate to the group.

**HOUSE GM ANNOUNCEMENT**

Everyone gathers around a makeshift stage as the sun starts to slip below the horizon. Pathfinders whisper to each other in anticipation.

Venture-Captain Oraiah Tolal addresses the group. “Pathfinders, our expedition begins tomorrow. We have a day’s travel to reach the site where we will find the Door of Seasons. The founders of our Society may have been unable to reach the realm that lies beyond this magical gateway, but we have something they lacked.” The Venture-Captain holds a verdant crown aloft. “This is the Perennial Crown, an artifact that will serve as the key to opening the door. I hope that Alseta will bless us as we find this doorway to a new place. From what we’ve been able to gather, there’s a demiplane on the other side. The demiplane and the crown alike are closely tied to the Thorned Monarch, Qxal, an evil fey who once terrorized this region. The Pathfinders who recovered this crown faced steep opposition from the Monarch, and I have no doubt they will defend the Door of Seasons even more fiercely. Be wary any fey you see along the way; they are likely to be working for Qxal. Stay in groups of four or more for safety and help each other. Make any final preparations that you require and get a good night’s sleep; your next few nights will be on the trail. We leave an hour after dawn.”

Day breaks, and the excitement around the camp is too high to allow any Pathfinder to oversleep. Agents perform morning rituals, eat breakfast, and take a final look through maps and plans. Venture-Captain Oraiah Tolal gathers everyone together one last time. “I know that we’ve prepared well. We’re going to stop this Thorned Monarch. I have a small gift for each of you: a signal whistle with an engraving of the Perennial Crown. Use it to signal your fellow Pathfinders if you need help. And now, into the wilderness!”

Table GMs, please begin Part 1.

That's three for It Talks! so there we go.

With the rousing speech finished, a few runners quickly spread out among the gathered crowds handing out whistles to everyone while venture-captains and faction heads organize pathfinders into general groupings. Venture Captain Bjersig and Fola Barun gather the most experienced and senior pathfinders into a vanguard and quickly prepare to head out.
The signal whistles are a bit of explanation for the aid tokens, they don't have any mechanical effect.

Calsiro Benarry and Venture-Captain Blackthane quickly gather you and other pathfinders of similar ability into the main central force of the expedition. As you wait for the vanguard to gather and get moving, the dwarf finishes getting his armor on as Clasiro, a half-orc woman in a tricorne hat, lends a hand. She looks over the armor that for all purposes resembles a metal diving suit and hands him his helmet, pondering, “I like your style, Blackthane, but isn’t this a little more suited to underwater?”

Khoumrock Blackthane plops his helmet on, his voice taking a metallic ring to it as he counters, “It’s good armor still, and I’ve made a few adjustments so it works better on land. I’ve come out of retirement for the bloody sixth time, and I’m going to be comfortable!”

Calisro Benarry gives a shrug and responds, “Can’t argue with that. I’m always comfortable.” She turns to address the gathered Pathfinders as Khoumrock finishes fiddling with the last few latches. “Pathfinders, we’re setting out. Our goal is a horizon that no one of this world’s ever seen. But Qxal is aiming to make sure we don’t get there. Everyone, stay sharp and work together. Make sure to stay behind the vanguard, but we’re likely to see more than a few spouts of combat ourselves!”

Blackthane adds, “And mind your dang equipment!”

They lead the central force of the expedition out, leaving behind the newest and least experienced pathfinders in the care of Urwal and Valias Durant, the force clearly on rear guard duty.

After a few minutes of hiking the forces start to spread out into small groups. As everyone passes by a particularly rocky section of the Sodden Lands, you find Khoumrock Blackthane sitting on a rock, looking thoughtfully into the trees. He pauses for a moment and then points out the six of you. “I could swear that I just heard a talking lizard. Can you six go and check it out? It could be a potential ally or an enemy, so be careful."

Moving off from the rest of the groups, you come to large bluff where five giant lizards sit sunning themselves. As the group approaches they lazily stretch and look your way. The three humped creatures with curled tails are completely silent, but the large red and yellow lizard with some sort of ruff around their necks both look at the group with sharp eyes.

The first one with green tinged skin gives the group a sleepy look, before it opens its mouth and in common comments, "You're Pathfinders aren't you? Qxal gave us orders to kill you on sight but I'm sleepy. Please tell me we don't have to move."

The second one with pale yellow streaks snaps, "You know we can't do that... but I agree I don't want to have to move. You pests can come to us, right? Or maybe just talk to us?"

The lizards aren't going to attack immediately, and you have some time to try and convince them to a truce. There's quite a few options here for skills.

Skill options:
  • An easier Forest Lore (or other appropriate Lore) check to explain to the animals that the Pathfinders respect and care for the animals’ habitat (or something that aligns with their interests.)
  • An easier Performance check to entertain the animals enough to agree not to fight.
  • A moderate Deception check to convince the animals that the Thorned Monarch will betray them.
  • A moderate Nature check to use information about these specific types of lizards to make an argument.
  • A hard Diplomacy check to simply convince the animals to ally against Qxal.

A success on one of these will give you 1 influence point, a crit success 2, whereas a crit failure gives you a -1 influence penalty. You need 6 points to persuade them from attacking.

  • We'll act in 'rounds' for right now, the lizards are still waking up and sluggish giving you two 'rounds' to try convince them off attacking.

I've been preparing for this physically for years, and a slow shallow stream like this is not too much of a challenge! I can do this under my own power."

The pictures are images I used from the Lost Omens book (none were provided by the scenario).

The Pathfinder in dark blue who was pushing the group to not look bad, blushes slightly as his words were overheard. The elf with the scarf shows Crunch the map as well, showing where they've marked off their progress. "The river should be really close to here. I'm not the best at cartography, so I might have the distances wrong, though..."

    Herondal approaches them.

"Fair enough. Let's all look at that map. We are all new here and it can be easy to get lost."

The half-orc woman frowns at the map. "Sure, but let's see about getting up to that ridge across the stream. Maybe we can get a better point of view up there!"

Hrmm, you could give me a Survival check, Nature check, or a Lore such as Cartography Lore to see about reading the map.

Still waiting on Carmelizzia and Delorn to roll will saves before we move ahead. Open the spoiler on a Success.

Herondal takes a look at the map and the marking on it from the newbies are inscrutable and confusing as heck. He can't quite make heads nor tails of it.

The dice have been hating you today. Crunch or anyone else who's failed the will save can try one of those checks as well.
