"Figures," Xin sighs as the ghosts stubbornly refuse to bleed. "Looks like I'll have to rely on quantity over quality. Mom would be so disappointed."

Rather than waste time with her usual acrobatics, she simply runs around the ghosts. It's not like she's going to be impressing anyone this fight anyway. "Focus them one at a time?"

It probably makes sense for me to have a third ghost touch weapon, though this isn't finesse, so doesn't play to my (lack of) strengths. "Do we want to take time to bind our wounds while our magic is active, or do we want to hurry on?" Chkirri asks. "I bet we could handle the next ghost pretty quickly!"

Death ward lasts 10 minutes; it might be worth it to use spells to top us up quickly so we can take on the ghost while it's still active (we could also potentially wait another day, but I worry about taking more time to clear this place out since that will hurt our resources if we want to do another fight later on). I know standard OP in 2e is to wait and heal up with Medicine checks, but not sure that's the play we want to make now. I still have a lot of spells left and can use soothe, if necessary.

"Thanks Stormy, that's much better." Xin sighs in relief, then frowns as a thought occurs to her. "Actually, I should have asked first. Do you mind me calling you Stormy?"

"Ahmitar, mind directing us towards the next ghost? We're apparently in a hurry."

The hook sword is all Chkirri's: Xin needs weapons that are agile, finesse, or preferably both.

Chkirri takes the sword, but clearly doesn't look like he really knows how to best use it. Finally he shrugs and figures if he has to use it, he will.

”There are only lesser haunts around this room, but the ghost is this way!” Ahmitar says, leading the way east. A small stone walkway lines the perimeter of this open-air chamber. A sandy area in the center of the atrium surrounds a pond full of dark, dirty water. From the center of the pond rises a small stone structure with a wide, flat top. Large, open doorways lead to the north, south, east, and west.

"This is where the long-necked monster makes its lair," Ahmitar says. "Hmm... It's not here right now. Probably hunting in the forest. You'll likely have to deal with it when it returns tonight."

From here, you go east again. Stray leaves and twigs dot the sand pit in the center of an oval, open-air area. Halls lead north and south, while to the east is a large shrine.

Ahmitar takes you south. A large and colorful eucalyptus tree stands at the center of this chamber, reaching toward the sky through a square window in the ceiling. An old skeleton lies slumped against the base of the tree, bones spotted with fallen peels of multicolored bark. Amid the bark scraps lies a single silver feather.

A ghostly woman emerges from the skeleton as you approach. ”I am sorry! Please, forgive me! I beg you for forgiveness!” she wails.

You are in A12 now. The characters can attempt a DC 33 Deception or Diplomacy check to convince tje ghost that they forgive her; any character wearing a holy symbol of Irori gains a +2 circumstance bonus on this check.

Xin steps forward, lightly elbowing Chkirri in the side as she approaches the woman. She's not particularly spiritual herself, but she's known enough Irorans to have an idea of how to reach her. "To be trapped here, forever dwelling on past mistakes...that is not the way of the Enlightened One. Move on. Strive for perfection, if not in this life than in the next."

"I offer my forgiveness, but it is your own you truly need."

"Thank you," the ghost says softly, wiping away spectral tears. "I hope I truly am worthy of your forgiveness.

"I am Kannitri. I was the leader of a group known as the Broken Rebus. We believed that enlightenment came not through knowledge or meditation but through outright might, which we argued represented the pinnacle of the physical self and allowed one to transcend into the spiritual realm. But this extreme belief soon became twisted into a hunger for power. The Broken Rebus’s last resort—a violent takeover of the temple—failed, though all of the monks on both sides of the conflict were mortally wounded.

"As I was dying, I made my way to the meditation tree. I sat down and pondered the attack and my actions before eventually passing away. My mixed feelings—remorse, indignation, sorrow, anger—created enormous turmoil within my soul, but before I could resolve my clouded mind, my body expired. Now, my restless spirit lingers here.

"I wish to be with my fellow disciples once more. Most of my friends perished in the courtyard before their names (or mine) could be inscribed on the pagoda sculpture there. If I tell you their names, will you pay them the honor they are due? Perhaps then, I can join them in the Serene Circle on Axis."

Storm Adder turns to Ahmitar, "Would you be willing to carve in the names. We have seem that you are an excellent craftsperson."

Ahmitar happily agrees to inscribe the names on the pagoda, eager to put his skills to good use. After he has completed the task, Kannitri bows to each of you, a wistful smile on her face, then she slowly fades away, finding peace at last. You can feel a pall lift from the temple grounds as some of the other ghosts and haunts that inhabited the place fade away as well.

"Well, that was quite the face turn!" Chkirri observes happily. "Maybe someday our names will be inscribed too on that ring of honor. Maybe we should take some time to rest and patch any wounds we have before the long-necked monster gets back? Then I bet we can persuade it to share too."

Medicine checks if needed, then explore the rest of the area while we wait?

Sounds good if the long-necked monster gives it to us. I'll also Refocus.

You take 30 minutes to rest and refocus. Nothing untoward happens during this time, and it is still early in the afternoon by the time you have finished.

"So everyone here died because of a schism within the temple, rather than an attack from outside. There's probably a lesson to be learned there." Xin smiles as Kannitri fades away. "Regardless, at least now she and the other monks can be at peace. May their next lives take them farther along the path to perfection."

She rolls her shoulders with audible cracking. "Thanks for the healing. If Ahmitar's right we've still got a few hours before the long-necked monster returns. Check out the rest of the temple? Even if the ghosts are gone, there might be more spiders or something. But first!" She reaches into the bark and triumphantly pulls out the silver feather. "One down, nine to go!"

You return to the sandy fighting arena and give it a thorough search. Buried in the northwestern corner of the sand pit is a greater striking rune!

A large garden plot takes up most of the roofless enclosure to the north. The soil appears dry and what little plant life remains is dead and wilted. Finding little of interest here, you head east.

Tarnished bells, frayed ribbons, and crumbling wooden beams surround the massive statue at the center of this shrine space, which is set into an alcove at the eastern side of the temple’s open-air training area. Six steps lead up to a clearing where one can sit before the large statue, which depicts a smiling old man seated in a cross-legged position and holding a staff. A pair of braziers stand on either side of the steps and various prayer instruments lie scattered before the statue. The alcove’s northern wall is badly damaged, with a fifteen-foot-wide gap that reveals the forest outside the temple.

You recognize the statue as a depiction of not just any old man, but of the Old Man, Irori’s herald. Storm Adder recalls a koan about the Old Man. Perhaps speaking the poem aloud may show deference to the herald.

HP 234, AC 40*, F29/R29/W30* Male tengu bard 19

Ooh, greater striking rune! That's nice. This is my first high-level content, so very exciting to get what in the old days would have been like a +4 weapon.

Chkirri looks at the garden and shrugs. If he were more interested in farming, perhaps he would be curious whether it just happens to be bad soil here or if there's something more to it -- but he was never interested in farming. That's how he ended up in Goka.

He waits to see if Storm Adder will recite the Koan.

...and adds, "We'll take all the help we can get."

Xin, you should take that Gr. Striking Rune. I can use magic to up my damage a bit, so I think it would be better for you!

It might be his imagination, but Storm Adder could swear that the statue moves slightly to bow to him. At any rate, nothing untoward happens when he approaches to claim the treasure piled in front of it.

In addition to the phoenix necklace, the treasure consists of a bag of holding type III, a jade serpent wondrous figurine, a phylactery of faithfulness of Irori, a ring of swimming, and 570 gp in assorted gems and coins.

Phoenix Necklace:
RARE, ARTIFACT, CONJURATION, HEALING, MAGICAL
This brilliant jewelry is made from fine silver interwoven with a uniquely malleable form of ruby that causes the necklace to glimmer like a flickering fire. Hao Jin created the necklaces to mitigate the potential of death during the Ruby Phoenix Tournament pre-qualifier, and she specially attuned each phoenix necklace to the silver feathers she created for the pre-qualifying round. While the silver feathers themselves aren’t magical, they are required to activate the necklace’s power. Each team starts with 3 feathers hidden in their headquarters; they acquire more through challenges and events. Additionally, the tournament emissary’s enforcers have the ability to deliver messages to the necklace’s wearer at any time by casting sending, though the wearer can’t respond.

Activate [three-actions] command, envision;
Effect: You select any number of willing creatures you can see within 30 feet, including yourself. The selected creatures can make nonlethal attacks without taking a penalty to their attack rolls. This effect remains in place until you remove the necklace or use this activation again.

Activate 10 minutes (envision, Interact);
Effect: The necklace consumes one of the attached silver feathers and casts 7th-level raise dead. Activating this ability is particularly costly and every activation requires consuming one more silver feather than the previous activation.

Oh, that necklace is nice. Am I reading the duration right on the first effect? It's basically permanent unless you remove the necklace?

"A championship necklace!" Chkirri notes. "Matsu, would you like to wear it?"

I'm happy for anyone to take any of the items, I think. We should probably start a loot sheet, which I can do Thursday/Friday if no one else wants to.

Xin nods, eyes fixed on the shimmering rubies. "Wish we'd had it for our fight with Tino's Toughest; we wouldn't have needed to worry about knocking each other out. Although I guess it's for the best that we didn't waste too many resources given how dangerous this temple has been." Reaching out, she affixes the silver feather to its proper place.

"I agree that it makes the most sense for Matsu to wear it. If anyone goes down it'll probably be Stormy or me." (He hadn't objected, which she's taking as permission to continue using the nickname.) "Even though that shouldn't happen if every team activates their necklaces; better safe than sorry. If Matsu or Chkirri wears the necklace, they can get us up after. And I think it suits Matsu better, no offense Chkirri."

Storm Adder, I actually think the greater striking rune would be better for you. It's an extra d10 for you and only a d4 for me.
