Goe Lem can’t determine what the figures are worshipping on the mosaic...even so, he and Seelah agree on the order of the discs and then place them in that order within the mosaic...and...
...the door opens, revealing another descending staircase...

Aatish |
Aatish steers her riding dog down the stairs.
”You are smart! Good! Aatish wants war!!!“
She just goes down.
The White Rose Duelist |
So when the time comes, do I cast daze monster on Aatish or her dog?
White Rose Duelist follows.
Piotr the Wolf |
Piotr goes along with the group.
GM Otha |
You traverse the stairwell to reveal the following...
This room is split by a long, ten-foot-wide stone walkway, extending sixty feet east to west between two spiral staircases. Two ladders rest on the north side of the walkway and two more on the south, leading down into a fifteen-foot-wide trench twenty feet below. These sub-rooms are filled with objects ranging from decrepit suits of rusted armor, to piles of rotting furs, and to various over-stuffed footlockers.

Aatish (-1)
Aatish |
Aatish rides to the other side.
Acrobatics riding dog if needed : 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
When she arrives on the other side she will cast detect magic.
Aelin Ashryver |
"Bashra dear, go explore and see if there is anything unusual for this place down south" as before Bashra heads off, she will make sure the Aspect of the Tiger is on Bashra incase anything decides to pop out
Aelyn will search the north section herself "Seems to be a bit simple of a room to be a storage room with just a raised platform, lets see what is around"
Perception darkvision: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Seelah lvl4 |
Seelah holds back a chuckle at what Aelin and White Rose said, trying hard to stay serious.
She will stand checking from the middle of the platform.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
The White Rose Duelist |
(White Rose didn't actually say anything. I thought it was common to use italics for thoughts.)
GM Otha |
Aye White Rose, I use italics for thoughts with my PCs as well...
Aatish goes to the end of the walkway...and while she can see another descending stairwell, she cannot access it as a heavy and sturdy portcullis blocks the doorway to it...she detects no magic there...
In the southern half of the room, Bashra sees two levers, one in each corner. In the northern half, Aelin sees a lever only in the northeastern corner; but after moving some rugs, she finds another lever in the northwestern corner as well...

thats my fault, I was responding to it and was thinking it was in bold, sorry about that
"looks like there are some levers, and since the little one hasn't ran off on us I would imagine she can't and is blocked, so lets see if we can move them"
Aelyn will attempt to move the levers if she can
Piotr the Wolf |
I'll take a lever. Maybe we need to pull them all at the same time.
We should look for a clue in this room.
The White Rose Duelist |
Perception: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (14) - 2 = 12
White Rose Duelist looks for a clue, and is marginally more competent at it than usual. This probably does not help.
GM Otha |
As Aelin and Piotr try out the levers, they find them rusty and a bit difficult to pull...they perceive they’ll have to put some oomph to it...
Need to include a Strength check when you try to pull a lever...
The White Rose finds nothing other than what has already been found...

Seelah lvl4 |
Ah! sorry, I thought it was whispering
Seelah will go to the Northeast corner to pull that level at the same time as the others. "Alright, give me the sign"
When everyone is in position, she will pull down with force with the others.
STR check: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Piotr the Wolf |
Piotr whuspers a small prayer to Milani for some guidance, then strains to pull a lever.
Grrrrrr!
STR check & guidance: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 1 = 16
Piotr the Wolf |
Arr. So we did need to pull them all at once. In order to enter the area beyond, there needs to be at least four people to work these levers. I wonder how many thugs Celeena has with her. Piotr marches along the catwalk through the open portcullis.
Seelah lvl4 |
Seelah climbs up again and waits for the more perceptive members to check what's ahead.
Aatish |
Aatish waits until the others are with her and takes the stairs with her riding dog.
GM Otha |
1d20 ⇒ 16
Aatish awaits for her companions to arrive and, as they come up the stairs to get back on the walkway, before they step a foot on it, you all hear a grating sound and the portcullis lowers before your eyes, blocking the passage once again...
Aatish, since you were standing next to it, you have time to get through the doorway before the portcullis closes...if you wish and act quickly. If I’m not mistaken, Goe Lem was not next to the door when the others pulled the lever...if I am mistaken though and Goe Lem was close to the exit, he may enter as well...

Aatish |
Aatish jumps to the other side of the gate.
Piotr the Wolf |
Aatish, is there a lever in there? Maybe it locks the gate in place after all these out here are pulled.
Seelah lvl4 |
"When we entered, were there any boxes by the portcullis? Maybe they put something below to keep it from closing and just push it out of the way to get it to close." In case there is no leveler on the other side... Seelah looks down at the one she already knows. Do they look like they reset or would we have to pull them up this time?
Goldenwing |
How much space is there between the bars? I am tiny (and can become diminutive) and have a -2 strength modifier, so may be able to operate the lever while everyone else goes through.
GM Otha |
Aye, Goldenwing, a tiny creature could squeeze through the portcullis bars and a diminutive one could pass thru even easier...
Aatish rides her dog thru the doorway before the portcullis blocks it...

Seelah lvl4 |
No levelers on the other side then?
Are there any sturdier boxes, chests or barrels that we can place under the gate to keep it from falling at the way?
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Goe Lem |
Did the levers move back as the gate came down?
Anyone have a spike or anything we can jam into the gate or lever mechanism to keep it from operating? Or... I suppose we could just tear down the gate. That would be very noisy.
I have a dagger or even a boarding axe if that seems like it might work.
GM Otha |
As Seelah knows since she passed the perception check, the only lever that is back in the lowered position is the one to the northeast...all the other levers are in the raised position where you left them. You see no lever on the other side of the gate; Aatish is on the other side but she’d need to search for a lever as none is visible...
Seelah looks around for something sturdy to lodge in the doorway...but everything in this room is decrepit and she doubts anything would stand up to the heavy portcullis...
After further study, Goe Lem thinks the portcullis is not only very heavy but also sturdy to boot...he doubts it can be torn down, at least not within the time crunch of their mission...
What do you do?
Piotr the Wolf |
Look for a lever in the room beyond the gate.
If there is one there, I'll pull this lever down here that reset while all of you wait near the gate. If there isn't a lever in there to lock the gate while it's open, maybe I can hurry there before it closes.
Aatish |
Aatish listens and grunts.
She starts to search for a lever.
perception : 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Also her dinosaur familiar starts searching.
perception : 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Goldenwing |
Goldenwing tries to lower the lever with the full pound and a half of her weight.
Strength: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (16) - 2 = 14
With a mighty SQUAWK she lowers it. Assuming this works, since Bashra's 12 did. She will hold it down as long as she can so everyone can get through, then squeeze through the bars.
The White Rose Duelist |
"Hurry," White Rose Duelist yells. "She won't be able to hold that forever!" She then runs through the portcullis.
Goe Lem |
Goe Lem hustles everyone through the opening. He is intending to be the last through so he isn't in the way for anyone else.
Goe Lem goes down to the lever to see if a dagger, small axe, or grappling hook could jam it in place. Or if it could be tied back to the the stairs or ladder.
The White Rose Duelist |
Perception, WRD: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (10) - 2 = 8
Perception. Goldenwing: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Seelah lvl4 |
Seelah looks back with a sigh and checks if she can tell what's going on.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
"Ok... how about this. We pull the levelers again and wait to see at what moment they go back. Maybe we are stepping on something near the gate and that make them reset automatically?"
Goe Lem |
Ok, I think I miss-understood wat Goldenwing was doing.
It seems this lever (the one in the North East location) might be controlling the gate. I will attempt to confirm.
Goe Lem pulls the level in the NE location. Take 10 str check is 15.
If the gate rises, Goe Lem will run a grappling hook and line from the wall at the center of the spiral stair to the lever (green line on map). Thinking that the wall section should be enough to hold the lever in place.
Goe Lem |
Ok, that is what I originally thought Goldenwing was doing. But then it sounded like you were saying Goldenwing found and pulled a lever on the other side of the gate with Aatish.
Let me see if I have this straight now.
1) Group pulled all 4 levers. (We never tried 1 lever.)
2) Gate opens.
3) Group start to move toward opening.
4) Gate closes and Aatish jumps to other side before it closes too far.
5) Only NE lever moved back while gate closed.
6) Goldenwing throws the NE lever again, but nothing happens.
7) Goldenwing finds a 5th lever in the SE on this side? of gate.
Is all that correct?
Does the gate have a track that it looks like something could be jammed in to stop the gate? Assuming we can get it open again.
GM Otha |
All right except for #7...
Let me summarize...there are only four levers and the party previously pulled all four down and the portcullis opened...but when you headed for the gate, the portcullis closed...you then noticed that the northeast lever (which one of you had just pulled) was back in the raised position...then Goldenwing pulled down the northeast lever again...and nothing happened...but Seelah then noticed that the southeast lever was back in the raised position...and that’s where we’re at now...
Piotr the Wolf |
Lets just reset all the levers with one person waiting at the portcullis. After we pull the four levers here, the one at the portcullis goes in and hits the switch in there.
Seelah lvl4 |
"That sounds good."
Seelah agrees with Piotr and goes back to her leveler (northeast) and waits for the others.
