"That's...really great news..." Jaeric responds to Royo's revelation. "This mission accomplished more than we probably imagined it could. Let's get this information back to the Spire on Absalom Station and start analyzing it. But, between now and then, the whole team could use some serious downtime to recover. Zephyr is tired and still helping put out the fires. He is curious, however, what kind of books are stored here that the hellknights were willing to die to destroy. He looks at the labels and any spare pages as he helps clean up.

Royo sways giddily. "It appears any recovery time you receive has been well-earned. I am excited at the prospect of following up our discoveries here and confirming my hypothesis. "

Loomarch destroyed many relevant texts in the initial purges. The surviving texts are in alien text or else appear to be old planetary surveys.

Read these texts and make a DC 16 Physical Science check:
The surveys describe star systems close to the Veskarium.

The surviving notes provide nothing else of import or any clues as
to why the Order of the Pyre wanted them destroyed. This is a dead end.

Zephyr has no training in Physical Science, so this means nothing to him.

Shaking his head at the obsession of the hellknights, Zephyr sighs and rejoins the others, ready to leave for the next step in their heroic journey.

"As am I..." Jaeric admits, "However, before we just return to Absalom Station aboard the Diligent Forerunner, we need to consider the intentional arson these Hellknights engaged in...as well as the fact that Iteration-177 brought them here. Did the android know what they intended? Again, I worry just how far we can trust them. I know Iteration-177 has supported the Society as a benefactor during our hardship, but isn't it possible they have their own agenda? How much does it coincide with the actions of Loomarch? Could the android somehow benefit from what occurred here? And if Iteration-177 wasn't supportive of what happened, what will they do about this breach of trust with the Athaeum's Curators? Or how it reflects on us? I mean, thankfully, the Curators are pleased with our efforts to save their books. But, considering we just put down the Hellknights, it could create friction between the Starfinders and the Hellknight Order in the future..."

Royo's tail curls and lashes pensively. After a few seconds he replies,"If this were some tawdry tri-vid, I would say that everyone has their own agenda. Fortunately it is not, and the moment I am sure Iteration-177 has the First Seeker's complete trust. However, if you feel compelled by duty, include your misgivings in your report. In the search for knowledge a healthy skepticism can be an effective tool, whether we be engaged in research or examining a friendship."

Healthy skepticism. That was probably the first thing Royo has said that Never agrees with. She would leave reports and whatnot to Jaeric; he seemed interested in that stuff. As for the First Seeker and Iteration-177, she didn't care who trusted who. Hopefully, Royo's healthy skepticism extended in all directions, including the Curators. For her part, Never could have admired Loomarch's conviction if he wasn't such a braindead drone.

"Very well. I truly don't mean to disparage our benefactor. We do need a ride home, after all. I'm just concerned that these Hellknights either duped the android or they were colluding together to damage these books. There's still a mystery here. And I don't like leaving loose ends..."

Jaeric then notices Zephyr out of the corner of his eye, realizing their comrade has been examining the charred pages of one of the texts. "Did you find anything interesting? What were they burning?" he asks once they start to leave under the watchful eyes of the Curators.

Later...as they exit the tower and board the transit to reach their ship again, he catches Never's eye and nods. "Well done in that fight," he offers, "You really did a number on Loomarch. That Hellknight may have underestimated us, but I don't think he had any idea how tenacious you'd be. Same goes for you, Lorne. Those fire suppression systems were vital and you got them up and running again. Even after the floor collapsed, you hung in there. Sorry we couldn't get to your side sooner, but we all made it out alive. Even Veda...

"Anyway, I'll make sure the Seeker knows...and everyone else back on Absalom Station. It's time the Society celebrated some heroes again. And I'd say all of you deserve it..."

You have a long wait back at the Diligent Forerunner. Fortunately Angel arrives about the same time that you do and, more fortunately, she carries a message from I-177 that he has been detained and the bar is open.

A few hours later a very somber android returns to the ship. Quiet, reserved, there is none of the jovial bonhommie that marked your earlier encounters with him, and the trip out. He asks the captain to set a course for Absalom, the cook to prepare something for all of you, and retires to his cabin for the night.

Zephyr tops off his fluids for the evening, then retires to the flight simulator for some more training to keep his skills sharp. He begins to think that piloting a much smaller structure—perhaps powered armor—would be an interesting challenge to undertake.

From the open bar, Jaeric notes the arrival of the now apparently chastened android, but remains silent as Iteration-177 issues commands to return home and then departs.

To break the tension, Jaeric raises his glass to all his Starfinder colleagues. "To a new way forward..." he offers, "And the success of our mission." He then downs a gulp of Dammar's Denial, a chilled spirit that the bottle indicated was manufactured in a Pharasmin temple somewhere on Triaxus. Iteration-177 remains subdued and introspective for much of the short journey home, but by the time his yacht slides into a docking bay at Absalom Station, he is his normal self.

It's local night when you step off the ship, but your comms are buzzing before you clear the docking bay. Luwazi has left instructions for you to be de-briefed immediately upon your arrival. She is so eager that she wakes to interview you herself.

Her first questions center on what you've learned, then your actions on the mission, impressions of the Curators, estimations of the fallout from conflict with the Hellknights. She expresses her gratitude when you're done and sends you off for a week of paid leave.

If you wanted to interact with I-177 or Royo on the journey home, we'll do it under spoilers. Likewise if you want more with Luwazi.

Finally, first post of the new scenario.

Almost two weeks later Luwazi Elsebo summons you back to Starfinder Headquarters for a new mission briefing. She is waiting in the conference room when you arrive.

A massive table-like hologram projector rests in the center of the darkened briefing room, its surface generating a three dimensional
depiction of the galaxy. Nominated First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo stands cross-armed while surveying the starscape before her, her frame illuminated by the hologram.
“I appreciate your punctuality. I'm sorry to say Alison Whiteangel won't be working on your team for the foreseeable future. Her talents have been requested elsewhere. Sparky will be replacing her for this mission. ” Her eyes turn toward a large golden field in the hologram within which most of the Society’s agents are believed to be trapped. “It won't be news to any of you that I'm determined to rescue the Starfinders trapped behind that Golden Shield in the Scoured Stars. I’m glad to share that with enhanced analysis and Royo's help, we’ve finally found a lead in the evidence you unearthed on Athaeum. It suggests that eight groups departed the Scoured Stars in ages past, and that eight relics were removed following the same trajectories.

"My predecessor’s Jadnura's, studies about one of these relics is what led us into the Scoured Stars, but I think if we can track down some of the people connected to the other relics—or, better yet, get our hands on a relic ourselves—we might find a way past this barrier.”

Elsebo waves a hand over the projector, and the entire hologram rotates; she then fans both her hands out to zoom in on a planet in the Vast. “Our closest guess as to where we might find some answers is here. Based on what I could find, it appears to be an unclaimed planet the Pact has labeled Icefront. The Pact Worlds’ databases didn’t offer much since Icefront is so far off anyone’s sensors, but we have some basic specs. The planet has a normal atmosphere, lots of fresh water, and abundant plant life. It spins and orbits its sun slowly, so I’d guess that it has extreme seasonal temperatures, but otherwise nothing particularly noteworthy. The file even states that there are no likely deposits of valuable mineral resources. That makes sense, since that’s what Pact Worlds surveyors tend to focus on. I’ll forward the file to you, so you can prepare.

"There are no known civilizations affiliated with this planet, but its atmosphere supports life and it’s not far off the likely flight path of one of the eight escaping groups. I want you to take a ship to Icefront and find whatever you can about where this relic might be hidden. More importantly, see what you can dig up about the people the relic seemed to be chasing. Any questions?”

Never took in Luwazi's presentation and peeked from side to side. Having no formal education, Never's knowledge about things was driven purely by her innate curiosity, and she was pretty good at figuring things out. Being an avid tinkerer, she had learned about the properties of metals and alloys and how they were sourced and under what conditions they were created. Physics and geology would make it impossible that a planet large enough to support life - at least abundant plant life - to not have any valuable mineral deposits. And such a strange and irrelevant fact to include in the presentation!

Odd. Very odd.

"Uh, yeah, I got a question," said Never, wishing she hadn't. "If there's no civilization, what are we supposed to do? How do we narrow the search? Or like, do we just scan the planet and if we find some metal it must be a ship because there's no other metal there?" She struggled to piece the clues together.

Sparky gives respectful head nod to Never and then to Zephyr "I am capable of doing both of those things, though I am better in the engine room taking care of it's systems. However, I believe I was chosen for this mission for my explosive expertise. If this planet is covered in enough ice to earn its name, then my skills can help with controlled avalanches and busting through layers of ice to get to anything buried in the snow."

He absently twists a new golden ring on his finger as if he's not yet used to wearing it. Then, he paces forward so he can turn to see everyone, including the ysoki newcomer. "Happy to have you on the team, Sparky. We'll get you familiarized with the ship before departure. You can assist Lorne. He'll probably be happy for the help."

Jaeric then nods towards Zephyr. "I'm curious as well about what this artifact looks like. We didn't get a close look at the data Master Royo obtained from the Athaeum, though I still have the memory of the experience available if we need it." He taps his temple for emphasis. "Either way, the search will go better if we know how to recognize it...beyond any magical emanations we can detect, of course."

He turns back to Luwazi. "Is there any record from the prior Pact World survey of Icefront that we can examine? Every bit of data on what we're venturing into might help. In addition, what do we know of the magical nature of these relics? Is there something we can pick up on our scanners...an energy signature, perhaps?...similar to whatever data we have from the studies Jadnura led on the prior relic? What experts did he consult on it? Could we speak with them beforehand?"

Several good questions have been asked, and Zephyr waits to hear the answers, preparing to enter the information in his datapad so it won't be lost...well, his backup datapad, anyway. The primary was severely damaged when he misjudges the strength inherent in this new suit of powered armor. Since then he has done some work and integrated the datapad into the left armbrace of the armor (and included quite a few backup batteries and emergency med serums in the storage compartment).

Gaining his composure as he addresses Zephyr "Maneuverability and better sensors sounds like the right choice considering we do not expect to fight. I only have 25 UPBs after my last resupply but you are welcome to them for the data pad translator upgrade, I can even add that for you on the way there it's a pretty basic module."

Turning to Luwazi "I appreciate the data transfer, it will give me something to analyze on the voyage there. It is odd even Historia-7 has no copies of the data, we Dataphiles take pride in the amount of data we collect for the society and pact worlds. 7 did take over after 6 left for the scoured stars, so they may of kept it from the main data core for security reasons. There could be a lot riding on this mission if we find anything worthwhile on Icefront. The whole restoration of the Society could be within our grasp...so use your best judgment and give it a good diagnostic to make sure it's spaceworthy."

Sparky sets his clothes to reconfigure into his cold resistant set of clothing "I already have cold clothing and our armor will provide temperature regulation for a substantial amount of time, as long as we don't get stuck away from our ship for recharging them. I do agree with all of Nevers ideas, even a clear aeon stone to negate the need for food period like I have can be a great benefit for this type of situation. Lorne and I can craft all of those items as well as long we have a workstation on the ship while we travel. Having a snowmobile or some sort of hovercraft could be very helpful as well to help navigating outside the ship."

Looking at Zephyr "My vote would be for the Pegasus, with an engineering workstation preferred to make what we need, perhaps even arcane lab to make any mystical items"

DC 25 Life Science, Sparky at +2 :
Fresh water in all phases covers the planet, likely supporting robust ecosystems year-round. Given the widespread availability of food and water, it’s unlikely that most of these creatures would interact with humanoids unless they were blatantly aggressive or edible.

DC 25 Physical Science, Sparky at +2:
The planet’s humidity and slow orbit suggest long seasons with severe weather including heavy rains during the summer and regular snow during the winter. This seasonal climate resembles that of Triaxus.

There's not much more to be gained here. You may have ground transport. I'll dream up something for that. Figure out which ship you want.

Never:

A few hours after the breifing, you receive a message from Ykris, you remember Ykris, on your comm unit.

Some of my Society contacts let slip that your leadership has been doing homework on Icefront. You’re not the first to take an interest in that planet. My colleagues at CeriCore Labs recently looked into applying for corporate research rights on Icefront, but we had to delay the project because lobbyists from Frozen Trove Labs pushed us out. Frozen Trove is a leading competitor of ours in the field—although they work more with genetics than cybernetics—and they are pretty ruthless, even by dragoncorp standards.
Their science is top-notch, but lots of our R&D folks say that nobody stumbles upon that many “breakthroughs” doing honest work (I know our legal department hates dealing with them.) If your travels do take you to Icefront, keep an eye out for Frozen Trove: their scientists are some of the best, but their management is hostile and very protective of their property.

Visit with Royo:

"Jaeric, good to see you again my boy. " He also greets anyone else who comes along, or is pleased to meet Sparky if he comes with.

After sloughing around in Requisitions inquiring about planetary comm units and whatnot, Never is about ready to head for the ship dock when she gets a most unexpected call. Peering through the drunken memory of that night of the Gala and Luwazi's big announcement, she recalls, with a shiver up her spine, the parasitic corporatist (Is that redundant? Yes it is.) known as Ykris. How she had managed to impress him is one of the great unexplained mysteries of the universe. Apparently, whatever she said to him stuck.

"Frozen Trove is gonna try to kill us with hi-tech s*@*. Good to know. Well, thanks for that, Ykris. I won't bother asking how you're aware that I'm about to go on this mission. I'm sure it would only piss me off to know."

Visit with Royo:

Spoiler:
"It's always good to see you, too, Master Royo..." Jaeric replies, "I understand Jadnura was quite secretive regarding the mission to the Scoured Stars, as well as the artifact that led him and many of our finest there. However, since we're on the verge of acquiring yet another artifact with ties to the star system behind the Golden Shield, I'm trying to understand if there's anything that might help us identify and locate it...or any dangers in handling it...precautions we should take."

"I'll be honest. Part of me is eager to undertake this mission and build upon our prior success at the Athaeum. But part of me is also cautious, because we know this type of artifact led most of our brothers and sisters into what can only be characterized as a trap...intentional or otherwise. Jadnura clearly made a mistake. I'd like to avoid repeating it. So, any information you can share on how to follow in his footsteps as we seek out this artifact and bring it back...or lessons that he learned while dealing with it...would be tremendously helpful."

"And...even if you have no specific insights into Jadnura's research, what advice do you have in general? You're far wiser and more experienced than any of us being sent on this mission. We'll do our best, of course. Just like we did at the Athaeum. But if there's anything you believe we should look for...or guard against...or prepare for with our gear or approach, please share it."

Return to the Ship:
Jaeric mulls over what little Royo was able to share about the relic Jadnura acquired that led him to the Scoured Stars. It seemed ill-advised for a First Seeker to keep so much of it secret. He would have thought the Dataphiles would have kept at least a record of everything as a backup for just the kind of catastrophe that had befallen so many Starfinders who followed him. 'At a minimum, I want to make sure we record everything we learn from this mission and make sure someone keeps that information here on Absalom Station...'

Once he arrives at the new ship, he listens as Never explains the unexpected insight shared by Ykris. He nods along with Zephyr as the android asks about Frozen Trove. "We'll need more information on them..." he starts to say and then sees Sparky already consulting the infosphere. "Looks like our new friend is already on it. I assume the ship is ready and up to spec? If so, we should get everything on board we plan on taking with us."

After Sparky has completed his infosphere search, he encourages the ysoki to share what he's learned. Then, Jaeric also offers to perform a mindlink with him, so he can share the experience of what they learned on Athaeum about the relic.

Sparky is more than happy to share what he finds once his search and analysis is complete. He does not try to hide the fact he is researching the topic. When Jaeric offers a mindlink he eagerly accepts. Gathering data quickly and effeciently is always appreciated.

"I see. So there were ships that departed the scoured stars prior to the relics departing. So the likelihood of finding more than ice has increased from 07% to 62%. It can be reasoned that since the relics followed the same flight paths, that the planets in the flight path have a high chance for colonization. There is no civilization on Icefront so there are few possibilities. One being that the planet was inhabited long ago and all that remains are ruins buried under the ice. Another being that this is just coincidental that Icefront was on the path and absolutely nothing is there. There are many more but those are the 2 with greatest likelihood by SECSIs calculations. We should get there and prove which theory is correct, I'm eager to find out"

"We should really be ready for just about anything," Jaeric advises, "Based on what Ykris shared about Frozen Trove, it sounds like they work in genetics. And, for them to have a vested interest in Icefront...at least, enough to 'freeze out' CeriCore Labs...there might be something biological on the planet that drew their interest. Maybe it's not entirely uninhabited? They could be hiding something. And it might be what we need to find the relic. So, we'll want to do some scans from orbit and on atmospheric entry. Make sure the ship's sensors are calibrated for it. I'd hate to miss anything important."

"If Jadnura played his cards close to his vest, he kept the artifact in an inner pocket of his metaphorical garment. I never had an opportunity for a full examination with a suite of instruments. I think your hypothesis that Jadnura's artifact had a mystical component is a worthy one. The artifact was of an age, quite ancient, that makes it unlikely that pure tech could keep it functional. Almost certainly some form of preservative magic is laid upon it, at the least.

"Jadnura's artifact was a key of a sort. It lowered the Golden Shield to allow access to the Scoured Stars. To function on an interplanetary scale, it must be able to broadcast somehow. I did see some reports from various Starfinder labs. Emissions had to be stimulated. I suspect if another artifact exists it too lies dormant."

Frozen Trove’s scientists are among the best in the business. Working for the company is considered a prestigious and lucrative scientific career, and Frozen Trove often sets the pace for innovative genetic engineering. The corporation’s CEO is an old vicious white dragon named Aralydio.

DC 20+:
Frozen Trove is under investigation by several ethics groups, but thus far the company’s legal team has insulated them from any formal charges or scandals. Aralydio is known to quickly “cut loose” any potential problems in his corporation, which often encourages cutthroat and desperate actions among employees.

Beyond their ferocious lawyers, Frozen Trove’s facilities frequently employ well-trained security details that show little mercy to trespassers and suspected spies.

In the end, he powers it off and shares what he can with the rest of the team across the ship's comm.

"Looks like Frozen Trove has a pretty big reach," he announces, "They're a full blown mega-corp headquartered on Triaxus and run by a white dragon named Aralydio. He's been around a long time, and insiders say he's got a reputation for being pretty vicious. From what I know of elven legends about dragons, that's probably directed both outwardly at his competitors and inwardly at underperforming employees."

"In fact, Frozen Trove is under investigation by several ethics groups, but they've got a pretty good legal team tying things up before anything reaches a Pact World court. A friend of mine says Aralydio even cut loose a few 'problem' employees that could have complicated things for them, so it's created a cutthroat atmosphere inside the corporate structure."

"Apparently, the company's labs are focused on genetic research and modifications for sale in the commercial and industrial sectors. Their scientists are top-notch according to talent agencies and they've won plenty of recognition by those who monitor such things. Word on the street is a lot of up-and-coming scientists hold them in high regard. Seems there's a bit of prestige in working for them...not to mention higher than average salaries."

"I guess that gives us a little more insight into who we might encounter on Icefront if any of Frozen Trove employees are on-site. And I imagine it's no coincidence Aralydio took an interest in it given the planet's environment is so similar to Triaxus. I just hope we don't run into any dragons while we're there..."
