Retired to Taldor?

Realizing they were getting ready to leave, Seamus stands shouldering his pack. Looking at the table he realizes there are still several donuts on the serving platter. Quickly drinking the rest of the coffee in his cup, he picks up several of the donuts; putting them in his pack, hoping the magical quality of the haversack will keep the powdered sugar in place for later.

Nodding approvingly Seamus watch as Kast gave Izomandakus a list. He considered staying in Sandpoint for the day, but as he did, he couldn't think of a good reason to do so. Shrugging he turned to Rastaf. "I'm good to go." Quickly looking over to Val, knowing she would end up at Sapphira's house. and asking, "You don't mind if I tag along do you?" he smiles, "I can practice my lute on the porch while you and Sapphira 'catch up'."

When they arrive in Magnimar Seamus asks, "so who's going to report to the mayor?"

Once their business with the mayor is over Seamus follows Val to the 'armory shop' where Kast got his keen armor. Wanting to feel a part of the group, he also sold his mithril shirt and purchased Celestial armor, commenting, "Now I don't need to carry an emergency potion to fly." Changing at the shop, he followed her to the store selling 'ioun stone.' He'd was not very familiar with their use, but after the shop keeper explained what they were for, he made his selections.

True to his word, once they arrived at Sapphira's place, Seamus sat on the stoop, letting the lazy-day sunshine down on his face. Eventually, drawing his lute out of the haversack. As he tuned the lute, he ate the last of the powdered donuts. Taking out the music book they had found in the swamp he began to play.

The bulk of the party goes shopping in Magnimar that morning, and with so many you’re finished by 11am or so. Enough time for Valena and Seamus to peal off to visit Sapphira for an hour or so before lunch. Izomandakus and Rastaf, let me know what you do with that hour or two - if anything.

I should add that Seamus, though he’s frustrated by his playing, is still skilled enough to attract a small audience on the street, listening to his tunes of a bygone era.

Kast Phaer wrote:
"...any thoughts? What do you think, Brodert?" Kast asks, after the full download.

”Amazing, just amazing… This proves all my theories.” He looks up at you somberly, ”I was right! Hee hee!” He laughs, just for a moment, thinking of all the folks he’s going to be able to brag to. It takes him a while to calm down.

”Look, these Hellfire Flumes.” he digs around his cramped office piles for a scroll, which he amazingly finds. Unrolling it he continues, ”Look! The Old Lighthouse is a Hellfire Flume!” You see a rendering of the Old Lighthouse as it may have looked in Thassilonian times - complete with a few Thassilonian runes around the rim. From what you know now, it was certainly a Hellfire Flume dedicated to Runelord Alaznist, Runelord Karzoug’s opponent way back when.

The two of you go back and forth all morning exchanging excited commentary about what you’ve learned. Brodert struggles to contribute as much to the conversation as you. It’s clear that the things you’ve seen, and studied, are beyond his years of sifting vainly for clues at the Old Lighthouse.

But he’s a pursuer of knowledge, and doesn’t even notice such a thing as a failure on his part. For the information is here now! The hunt is on! Eventually, he says, ”Can you take me into this library you found? I should very much like to meet this librarian, and study there a time. If I can.”

It’s lunch on Kuthana the second. What are your plans for the afternoon?

Kast listens and engages, but is mostly interested in Brodert taking notes of everything. Notes and journals are the only thing that might last past a possible disaster that Kast can't forsee.

"Are you taking notes, Brodert? I can help...but there is so much," Kast emphasizes that things need to be written down before he goes risking his life again.

"So...the Hellfire Flumes were a direct opposition to Karzoug? Is that what you're saying? As it was aligned to Alaznist? That's interesting, but most of the resistance we've faced has been aligned to Karzoug. What are we to make of Karzoug's interest in the Flume? Is there something that Alaznist had that Karzoug seeks? What is going on?" Kast doesn't have answers but sure has questions.

"As for getting to the library, we'll need Izo on board. Teleporting to the door is the only way to go...but you also might end up in Izo's kissing room by accident. It's happened. It's a risk."

In Magnimar, Val happily has Seamus accompany her to Sapphira’s. After she has some private time with her love, she even has the two for tea to talk.

At lunch when everyone meets up again, Val takes one of Izo’s cinnamon cookies and munches on it while she puts her feet up. She wears her new armor under her clothes, as she has spent too long in high society to be comfortable being seen wearing the same thing as anyone else.

”Now that we are all fancied up and have done a bit more research, I am ready to jump on in. We could spend the rest of our lives probably studying all the books on Thassilon, so just focus now on closing that sinkhole—at least stopping it from getting bigger—and finding out what is down there.”

Retired to Taldor?

Having dropped off his belt for an upgrade in the morning, Seamus enjoys the rest of the morning shopping and playing his lute. As they leave Saphira's place he realizes that Val had placed her armor under her clothing. Resisting the urge to ask her if it chafes, he considers trying it himself. Still very tired from is overnight ordeal he's happy to tag along with whatever the others are doing. Eventually finding his way back to the shop to pick up his belt.

Brodert looks down his glasses at the nervous Kast, ”Of course I’m taking notes my good boy. It’s what I do!” he chuckles and points to the various piles of paper. It’s true, he can put his hand to whatever he wants, but anyone else will take months, if not years, sorting all this out. It could take a lesser mind a lifetime! But he is taking notes.

”I’m not sure! Can it really be the Karzoug?” he speaks breathlessly. ”After all, we’re talking about millennia here!”

When he gets a grip on himself he ponders the question, ”Perhaps both Runelords are awakening and renewing their old conflict. We’re right on the borderland. Perhaps Karzoug is seeking information on his fiercest enemy? After all, if you were asleep all this time, wouldn’t you commit to defense first? See who the big bads are so you can protect yourself and hunker down a bit?”

I can't imagine something else with the knowledge and knowhow who could be doing this. Do you? I think Karzoug is the only answer. The party was in the Dragon at 2pm. Izomandakus said he was spending the afternoon until dinner when he was going to get Kast. Everyone else seems to be doing the same. Then you planned to go down in the morning, likely after another night of horrible nightmares for the citizens of Sandpoint, and the two missing guards are still missing.

Val feels anxious about not heading down yet, but if Kast feels they need more preparation and information from today, then he is mister Sihedron Soldier, and she will not push the issue.

Cool with skipping to the morning then!

Over dinner, Kast explains how it was important to download what had happened over the past few days/week to someone outside the party, so that if something were to happen, then others might be able to pick up where the party failed.

”…and so Brodert took all the notes, but they also might be very scattered. He suggested that it both might be the real Karzoug returning, and this place, the whatever under Sandpoint might be a battleground spot between he and Alaznist, his diametric foe,” Kast explains, sopping up the last of his gravy with a hard scone.

”So yeah, now that we’re geared up, we can head down in the morning?” Kast looks at whomever has joined him for dinner to see if they are ready as well.

Retired to Taldor?

Having gone upstairs and taken a nap, Seamus is in a little better shape than he was a few hours before. Picking at the meal, he nodded as Kast explained about needing someone to have information if they failed. Shrugging, "I'd just as soon not fail, but if you think it was important than that's fine."

He gestures the general direction of the sinkhole. "In the morning I'll be as ready as I can be for a couple of day. I left my magical belt in Magnimar for an upgrade. Just promise me we can go get it before we leave town."

Kast remains with Brodert for the afternoon, catching him up and ensuring all the party has learned is saved - in some form at least. Brodert dutifully takes down the information and dreams quietly of the library. The rest of the party whiles away the afternoon doing this and that. You get together again that night at the ‘Dragon to eat, chat, and generally make plans for tomorrow.

”Do you mean you haven’t investigated anything yet?!” speaks a briefly angry Sheriff as he strides up to the group. He takes a moment to get a hold of himself, for he always was known as a level headed one - and he is. ”Two of mine are missing and half the town didn’t seem to get any sleep last night with the howling and who knows what else.”

He shrugs and nods, ”I suppose it can’t be helped. But I’ll not wait another day. I’ll take a few guards down there now and see if I can get you any information.”

”Oh, we won’t go far. Just until we see something.” He nods again to the party out of respect and starts for the door with a determined look.

Kast feels his ire raise higher than anything he has felt recenlty.

"Well, we know that *THE* real Karzoug is about to come back, in some shape or form. We know this because he have fought through trolls, inbred ogrekin, and numerous stone giants. We know this because somehow we were lucky enough to find a library of nearly infinite Thassolonian knowledge, and were finally able to put some pieces together," Kast begins, trying to be calm.

"Now, I suspect you feel guilty about sending your men to their deaths. It's true, you didn't know any better. And I'm sorry about that. But at the same time, we know the bigger picture. We know that there might be hazards down there that we can't overcome. That are bigger than we meager 'Sandpoint Heroes'. And if that is the case, I needed to ensure that our story and our lessons lived past us so that others could perhaps complete what we could not," Kast continues.

"I would be as sloppy as you if I failed to prepare for the worst, rushing down there without preparations. Yeah, and don't you forget that those are MY friends and fellow guards that you sent to their deaths. I know them. I have had watches with them. I watched them. I'm sorry for their loss...but the bigger picture is that we might fail. And those notes in the hands of Brodert might be the only thing you can use to find a way to solve the issue. Might be the Pathfinders or Aspis Consortium can use those notes to figure out what we missed." Kast continues to try to keep his voice level.

"If you want to go down on your own, GO. I won't stop you. You have your own guilt to contend with. It's not mine. I'll go when we're ready to go, when we are prepared, and when we can succeed."

”I am not the brains of the operation, what can I say? If it were just me, I would already be down there. It is not just me, though. Do you think I understand half the things Kast and Izo say about Thassilon? Or that I remember the other half? That I understand beyond the most basic how their abilities work? I have to trust they know what they are doing. I cannot fight with my friends if I do not trust them. I trust that Kast has the best interests of Sandpoint at heart and that he would not tarry unless it was necessary.”

She downs the rest of her wine goblet and smacks her lips. ”My offer to go down with you tonight stands, naturally. I can make everyone invisible around me for a good ten minutes and I can dimension door us out if we run into anything.”

Nodding to Izomandakus as his friend told him not to worry, Seamus wanted to volunteer with Val, but he really needed a little sleep. The nap was nice, but if they were going to be in the thick of it, he'd need to be at his best. He almost laughed aloud when Izomandakus said to 'send Warren' remembering what a jerk the man had been to Kast. Seamus was a bit surprised that the sheriff began questioning them again.

Attempting not to roll his eyes at the sheriff's rant, Seamus was surprised how reasonable Hemlock seemed at the end. About to respond to the sheriff's question about preparations, having been up over a day and a half, Seamus was about to answer 'sleep' when Kast began speaking. His eyes widen as Kast shares a little of what they had been through, but his jaw almost hit the table when his friend called the sheriff 'sloppy' and bit his lip with the comment about 'guilt' hit the sheriff like sheep dung into a fan. Looking around at the table, Seamus sat up a little straighter trying not to look tired.

Turning to Val as she explains how they've been able to survive this far, Seamus nods. She was right, she could keep several of them for a bit and it seemed like she was smoothing things out a bit, he was thinking about asking her if she wanted him to go with her, then he yawned.

Rastaf hopes that the Sherriff will understand.

We just got a huge amount of information. We need to process it and hopefully understand what we're facing. If we jump down there now without any foreknowledge, we will be as hapless as the men who precede us.

We can't wait much longer, but I trust Kast. If he needs more intelligence, it would be wise to get it before we go down to face Karzoug's forces. It could make the difference between success and failure. And if we fail, Sandpoint will not be able to stop what is coming.

We talked about folks that could take care of Seamus' fatigue, but I don't think we ever did it.

Covering the yawn with his hand, Seamus watched Val stand up and get ready to leave. Knowing that no one in the watch could stand up to what they had seen, Seamus didn't want Val to basically go alone. Nor did he want to explain to Kaye why he let Hemlock go without more help. Standing he yawned again, turning to Val as he shouldered the new rucksack. "I don't mind going along and helping out. I just don't know how much help I'll be this fatigued."

So Valena is going and Seamus seems like he's going too if he can get fixed up.

Izomandakus and Rastaf haven't said if they're going this evening.

Kast seems to be going if everyone else is going, otherwise he's waiting until morning.

@Seamus I assumed she had already taken care of it with a lesser restoration. I had already mentally crossed off one

Val has already got Seamus’s fatigue cleared away before he even finishes speaking.

Retired to Taldor?

I wasn't sure, we never really finalized it.

Moving closer to Val, Seamus perked right up as the fatigue went away. Smiling, confident in Val's ability more than his own, he gestured towards the sheriff. "If nothing else the two of us can keep him from getting himself killed." He turns back and looked at the others, still seated at the table, raising an eyebrow as if there were an unspoken question they all should have heard.

Either of us could have done. Just spend 100 gp.

I don't feel like raising him again. I'm in.

The Sheriff walks with the party as you leave the ‘Dragon and head to the sinkhole.

You descend into the sinkhole by various methods (and the guards will help lower folks on ropes as desired/needed). You can also fly down in wind walk form, and solidify in the tunnel as you still have that spell going. Or air walk or fly. No problem.

Old map up!

The sinkhole tunnel comes through just above and past the Runewell in the catacombs of wrath.

The sinkhole’s collapse caused the area of the Runewell to fill with rubble. So on the plus side, no one is using that Runewell for any nefarious purposes. It also means getting to it for further research is going to take a long time. Or magic. Or both. Either way, no one can get to the Runewell just now.

The rest of the catacombs of wrath are intact more or less. A statue has fallen here and there, there’s more rubble everywhere, the ceiling is buckled in places, but on the whole - intact. Well, for the most part - but watch your step.

Lastly, a stairwell that had been full of rubble the last time you were here has now been cleared - it looks like manually - and maybe from the bottom. Seamus can spot evidence of the prior guards passage here and there as well. Their trail ends here though, and the stairs are filled with webbing. If they cut through it, it grew back - or was re-strung by whatever enormous damn spider made it in the first place.

It’s the easternmost stairwell of the catacombs of wrath - the current map. You had originally had this whole bit bricked up after clearing it.

I’ve put you on the eastern portion of the map, and you’ve walked through the entire complex to this stairwell. That said, let me know if you wish to study anything more thoroughly, before confronting the webs.

For spell duration purposes, it took you about ten minutes to reach this point as you were investigating the supports for stability, searching for fresh things to kill, etc.

Retired to Taldor?

Smilng to himself as all of his friends get up from the table, Seamus turns and winks to Pachemu before he starts to follow the sheriff out the door. Not wanting to waste the flying spell from his new 'uniform' armor Seamus scurries down the rope. Observing the familiar passageways, seeming so long ago now when they had first explored the catacombs.

Finding the rubble cleared from what appeared to be the lower chambers, Seamus pointed to the webbing, "The guards trail ends here." Gesturing broadly to the webbing, "If they cut through the spiderweb has been replaced." Scratching his head, he frowns, "I don't remember leaving any giant spiders. Alive or otherwise."

Shrugging he begins to slowly cut the webs, asking. "Any one afraid of spiders, should probably go back now." Looking over his shoulder making sure Kast has his pigsticker out and ready.

Will be taking 10(37/43) on perception, will wait until everyone is ready

Airlimping above, around, or near ‘Mus, Kast lets the small town minstrel take the lead hoping his own meager magical protections are enough.

”I got your back. Let’s go.”

"I don't think the guards cleared this. Whatever caused the sinkhole has also somehow removed the rubble" Izomandakus checks the webs in case they have been recently created by giant spiders or are just the product of normal ones.

Seamus will hack away at the webs, which take some doing. So much so in fact that he’s sure they are rejuvenating, if slowly, as he goes. Izomandakus is sure no living spider created these webs. They’re too uniform. So it’s possible the guards did clear it away, and it’s re-grown over the last day and a half.

You clear out the webbing down to the bottom of the stairs, but no door or passage greats you, just plain wall. Seamus pokes and prods, and eventually finds the secret panel.

The party gears themselves up for anything, and opens the door to a fog-filled rough hallway partly filled with rubble.

New map up - scroll to the right. It’s a little tight, but I’ve opened it up all the way to the next room (assuming you’re not going to look at the fog, shrug, and go home). I’ll describe the room when folks enter.

If/when you enter the room past the fog, please make a will save (illusion).

Val has her usual spells up when they get down: Tough Crowd on everyone, Freedom of Movement on herself, Apport Object halfcast on a scroll of Breath of Life. She adds Mirror Images to the list upon seeing the fog.

Mirror Image: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

”Cayden’s malty beer, that fog is as thick as the head on a proper mug of ale.” She smiles and taps her new visionwear. ”Unless you know how to accessorize properly.”

What does Val see with her fog cutting lenses that Momkie most generously gave to us?

Xin-Shalast - Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

From the secret door, all Valena sees is the next room, and that poorly. There are no light sources in the next room except what you’re bringing with you (which is plenty, but blocked by the fog in front of you).

Still…

The walls, floor, and even the arched ceiling of this space are covered with writing, the words spiraling and trailing in the ancient language of Thassilon. Some of the phrases are immense, with words nearly three feet high, while others are written in tiny, spidery script.

The medium for the writing varies as well - sometimes dark ink, sometimes blood, sometimes carved into the stone itself. You don’t actually see the doors to the south (though you can make that will save now).

All the passageways (north, east, and west) are fogged in, though the room is clear. You see flickering light to the west in what appears to be an immense cathedral - though the light doesn’t seem to outline any forms.

Will Save (illusion): 1d20 + 16 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 16 + 4 = 25

Reminder to all the rest of you that you get a +4 on your next save vs enchantment or illusion as well!

”There is writing all over in there. Hold please.” She finally remembers her scroll of comprehend languages on her person and pulls it out to read it. ”Looks like Thassilonian. Written in various grisly ways.”
