Louise takes the rosary with a "thank you" to Father Antonio.

"I didn't want to accept it under any false pretenses."

"I know about it" she adds. "I'm an alum of McTyeire in Shanghai. A Methodist school, but I've never really had an interest in religion."

Louise wants to be sure the good Father knows she's not open to recruitment.

So is Louise going to try to get blood from one of the soldiers? This should be interesting.

Yeah, that's the plan.

Alright, well, he's surprisingly passive as blood is drawn. Louise can see that the man is malnourished, dehydrated and filthy, as well as in some sort of fugue state that keeps him largely passive. A quick check of his heartbeat and respiration shows that he's alive.

Abraham watches quietly from behind as the doctor does her work. She works with an efficiency that still reminds him of the day he was placed on the desk in front of her with a bullet lodged in his gut. The memory made the scar ache just for a moment before he grabbed some of the hidden rations and water and fed the passive man once more.

"You got what you need Doc?" Abraham asked quietly, wanting to get back to the the aid camp to keep an eye on the Bolivians.

After Louise has completed the blood draw and sealed the vial, she checks the man's condition as best she can given the location and circumstances.

She motions for Abe to follow her and takes him a few yards away from the soldier to talk.

"He's not doing well. I'm not sure if he's sick, but aside from that question, he's suffering from exposure, dehydration, and malnourishment. If we're gone for a day or two I very much doubt he'll survive. Even if we don't go anywhere, a daily visit is only going to keep him alive for an extra day or two."

"We have to make some sort of decision about what to do."

Abraham listened to the doctor's diagnosis before looking back at the man that was tied to the tree. Releasing him was the kind thing to do but the chance that he could return to the enemy and inform them of their presence and their decisions could be incredibly dangerous. What could stop these strange men from turning their weapons upon the doctors and nurses of the camp.

"He can't go back. It is too dangerous." It would be too malicious to go on without him and let the man die from the elements as well. There seemed to only be one option left available.

"I have some rapport with him. He listens to me. Maybe I can settle him up somewhere or help him so he'll last a little longer, you know? You go on ahead, I'll take care of it." The lie was carefully constructed even as he offered Louise a kind smile. He knew what a kind death would be for the man, the sharp knife in his pocket feeling heavier all of a sudden.

I'm going to roll Persuade as a means of me trying to convince Louise that Abraham will take care of things and not to worry about it. I think Psychology might show that he is lying?

"Do you really think you can?" Louise asks hopefully. She relaxes visibly when offered some assurance there is a way to thread the needle between bad outcomes. In truth, she is very motivated to believe Abe. Louise is very aware of the problem they face with the soldier, and has no solution she can think of herself.

Before she leaves to return to the camp she tells Abe "If there is anything you need me to bring, supplies, water, or whatever, let me know and I will."

Abraham gave the young woman a nod for a moment, smiling weakly. It was a usual look for him so it wouldn't upset her. It was better this way; she was a good kid and didn't need this on her conscious. He would wave for her to head onwards as he slipped the large knife out of its sheath on his side before palming it in his hand. He turned back towards the soldier who sat there with a vacant look in his eyes, staring off into nothingness. At least the kid seemed gone. Abraham came over closer to him, kneeling down with the blade hidden behind his back before he got eye level with the man.

"I wish I knew what happened to you. I-I don't believe in God or anything like that; world is too cruel for faith. I'm sure this wasn't what you signed up for either and you got in over your head. I won't let you starve to death out here or burn up in the sun. That's too cruel." The kid looked like he was maybe in his early twenties or late teens, a child really who was sent to war to die in some hellish jungle. He scoffed at himself; life was a cruel joke sometimes. "If there is a God though, I hope he forgives us. He really left us with a bad hand, didn't he?"

With an uncomfortable quickness, Abraham brings the blade around and drives it into the man's chest, right where the heart would be. The blade sinks in deeply and he can hear the sudden gasp for the boy under him. It was painful but mercifully quick. He kept the blade there until he felt the man go limp in his arms. Abraham hated it here.

The blade was withdrawn carefully and his body was released from the ropes that held him down. Carrying him about thirty paces away, he would hide the body underneath thick bushes and out of the sun's rays. The jungle would have his body and part of him twisted inside at the thought of it. Carefully, he recited the last rites that he could remember the chaplain would say in the medic tent while other boys around this soldier's age breathed their last moments. He didn't get all the words right but the thought was what counted right? Abraham chuckled to himself; at least he was a considerate murderer. He really hated it here.

Washing off the blade and cleaning it dry, Abraham would quickly make his way back towards where the aid relief camp was. He would have something new to confess to Father Antonio when this was all done with, it seemed.

Men stabbed through the heart do not die instantly. As the knife enters the poor soldier's heart, his eyes snap open, his gaze finding Abraham's. He screams, forcing Abraham to put a hand over his mouth. He struggles with surprising strength, but the blood pouring over his tattered uniform soon saps his life. His fight becomes feeble, his breath ragged. He kicks weakly, then sags back against the tree. Slowly, his eyes roll back and he is still. His breathing comes in ragged gasps for about a minute before that, too stops altogether.

Abraham finds that the blood has covered far more than the blade. His sleeves are slick with it, his hands red with darkening gore. The man's dead eyes seem to stare at the ex-soldier, like an accusing brother-in-arms, voiceless only to those without a will to hear.

Doing his best to content himself that it was necessary, Abraham finds a stream and washes his hands and sleeves as best he can, then returns to the aid camp.

Now what? Ball's in the team's court.

It was a long moment there at the stream, washing the blood from his hands. Abraham's mind was numb as he dwelt on the young man's face. Those eyes looking betrayed, hurt, yearning for life. In that last moment, the young man was there and didn't want to die. He had tried to scream, only Abraham's fast reactions made sure that the deed could be done in silence. The red takes forever to be washed off, the stream becoming muddied with it. The soldier's blood stains his sleeves and he does his best to wash it clean before deciding it was easier to just dirty his sleeves with mud and wash that out. It was easier to let the dirt cover it all. Without another noise, he makes his way back towards the camp.

Tugging off his dirty shirt, he stuck to the undershirt he wore underneath that was stained with sweat. It wasn't much but it was what it was. For the evening though, he kept his distance from the others and appeared to be especially surly, moreso than usual. He kept his distance from Louise as well and waited for tomorrow to begin the trek out into the jungle towards the artillery impact sight. He did not sleep well.

I think we're ready to set out tomorrow, unless anyone has anything they want/need to do before then.

Would the Father and I have time to go speak to Gregorio, Enoli wanted to see if this tribe had any version of a 'holy man' for talking to about what could be happening in the jungle, or if they had information about this temple, but not sure if we have time for that

Take all the time you want.

Gregorio is a young man dressed in thin cotton pants, a colorful red poncho and a battered fedora over a traditional woolen chulla cap.

<Welcome to Bamba Rumi, Cabelleros. I am named Gregorio. You are with the doctors?>

Also, ask him if his tribe has a medicine...err...a holy man, or something like that, someone who may have some answers about the temple and what could be going on around here." Enoli said all this while looking at Gregorio.

He wishes to know if you have a holy man or elder who is wise with the ways of medicine or the land. Also, we have heard of an old temple nearby. Do you or your people know anything about it?>

Minerva stays with Enoli and the father as Louise and Abraham go to see about the prisoner.

She looks incredibly bored, and stands up. "I'm going for a walk through camp. Might see something interesting."

She walks out of the tent and starts to stroll in the direction of the soldier's camp skirting along the grass. Looking as if she's just enjoying the day. She skirts around to the radio tent and through the staff tents. She's looking for anything that looks strange or out of place.

Antonio notices that while Gregorio retains his pleasant smile, he tenses very slightly when you mention the temple. This is something important to him, and he is now guarded in his speech. You sense that you could lose or gain Gregorio's trust here.

<The jungle is full of temples, Father. The Old People, you know? They were great builders. Why do you want to see a temple?>

One of you is going to need to give me a Charm or Persuade roll. I note that Antonio has invested in both.

Minerva, you can't see anything wrong - this place looks like what it is, an aid camp in a jungle. But you can't shake the feeling that something is very wrong, like you're being watched.

<'Pillows of Stone'? And who are the Old People...wait, the soldiers are looking for it too? Is that why they're here? That is...disturbing. Will you take us there?> He turns to Enoli. "The soldiers are searching for the temple too! Whatever is there, they cannot find it first. I don't know what Caduceus wants with the mummy, but it's better than having the demon take it. Find the others. We may need to go soon."

<They do not say what they are looking for, Padre. But they are looking, and there is nothing else but the Dreamer.>

<Yes, the Pillows of Stone are where we leave offerings to the gods and the Dreamer. There are five of them around the Temple. We do not go to the temple itself. It was closed by the Dreamer in the last world. I can take you. But you must be careful to avoid the soldiers. <You will guide us, yes? We should leave as soon as it is safe in the morning. I will gather the others and we can try to slip out of the camp before anyone else notices.> He stands, but waits to see if the man has anything else to say.

"The UK is nice. I grew up there. Be prepared for rain and short winter days." She takes another draw. "I'd rather be in London than New York. I needed to get away for a while."

"Hm, New York already has a good number of rainy and dark winter days... I don't mind, but more might be hard to take."

"Shanghai is a dangerously fun city. The only reason I'd put it behind New York is my parents are there. You know, if I could change reality a little bit, I'd rearrange things so my parents lived in New York and I lived in Shanghai. Now that setup would be aces!"

Early the next day, Our Heroes set out into the jungle as a light rain begins to patter down all around them. Gregorio leads them, armed only with a walking staff and a machete. He carries with him a pack made from intricately woven banana leaves.

<It is a few miles to the first pillow> he says in Spanish. <From there, we make a circuit around it. It will take all day. Be sure you carry water and food.>

Gregorio leads you to a wide river a few miles to the west. Your path leads down a forested ridge to a wide flat area thickly grown with trees and other vegetation. The river here is wide and shallow. <This is the only ford on the river for many days in either direction,> says Gregorio.

Around the ford, and especially on the far side, you can see the obvious signs of a bloody battle. Uniformed corpses lie where they fell. Shell holes tell of artillery shelling that reminds Abraham of St. Mihiel. Burned out and abandoned vehicles lay in ruins.

Natural World check:
None of the bodies have been eaten by the usual carrion eaters. The area is too quiet for any such jungle area. No animal noises can be heard, only the patter of the rain.
