Umikh Ironbender |
I'm re-adding my bit from the previous thread for ease of access.
Umikh /oo'-mick/ will tell you he comes from a line of talented metal smiths, hailing from east of Baldur's Gate. He'll point to the head of his battleaxe, and tell you that Elga was forged by his great grandmother, and it is a fine if aged axe. Umikh will tell you the story of how he and his cousins fire walked for dares and to show off, after they figured out how to keep the coals just the right temperature. He points to a metal band around his wrist, says the first sword he ever forged was so terrible it became this bit of scrap, and a good lesson. If there is a fine hot meal in front of him, he might mention their leaner days not so long ago, and how grateful he is for such a fine feast. Being from the Far Hills, times haven't been too good. He'll say that the Zhentarim pressured his family to produce inferior goods, that they wanted their fine metal works and weapons to be crap. That he stood up to them, refusing to do so, but then left to keep his family safe. And almost all of that is true.
He is a quiet fellow, but if you get him talking he can be chatty and merry. Umikh is accompanied by Nick, a large brown and black dog with a crooked tail, a sweet disposition and a great hunting instinct. Umikh has a good rapport with animals of all types, enjoys observing what they do but mostly leaves animals, and people, to their own devices.
'Mik, if you are daring enough to try this nickname out, is hoping to learn new and interesting metal working techniques, and hopefully find some new material to boost his family trade.

Thanks for having me Greycastle! I look forward to playing with you all.
I would like to know a little more on how the characters received or felt 'the Call.' What brought them together and walking north and north again.
Greycastle |
Thanks a lot for the invitation Greycastle!
Good to be a part of the team, and join you guys.
One small correction, Aggrammar is a Cleric, not a Fighter. Would that be an issue?
Not at all. I apologize for getting mixed up.
Baldrick Longhall |
Thanks for the invite, Greycastle - looking forward to this!
And sorry if I'm late - yesterday was a holiday in Canada
On a scouting mission, Baldrick's squad was attacked. Or... maybe there was an explosion? An experiment in magic gone wrong? Baldrick's still not sure. What he does know is that, when he regained consciousness, there was nothing around him but shattered bodies and pieces of crystal that pulsed with a faint orange light.
His superiors were unsympathetic and thought Baldrick knew more than he was saying. Frustrated with his unwavering testimony, an officer shouted that Baldrick had better come up with some answers, or else. Baldrick took this to mean that he should find out what happened on his own, so he left. Hoping to learn more about what happened to his companions, to learn more about himself and the world, Baldrick travels haphazardly, taking on mercenary jobs when he can.
Since the incident, Baldrick is uneasy around magic, believing it to be at the root of what happened. Nevertheless, he carries a piece of that crystal on a chain around his neck, as both reminder and good-luck charm.

Some of our players have less flushed out backstories, so the exact reason everyone is traveling north may have to be hand waved a bit. Since this is AL, that is OK and we can work past it.
My thoughts were you were all part of a small group traveling north from Luskan. While there was originally a few others and a guide. The trip has not been an easy one, and some have not made it or turned back. You lot are what remain of the group and I was thinking of adding the Guide as an NPC in the next post.
I know for a few of you, I thought the existence of strange mysterious crystals that could be found through Icewind Dale might be a lure. Others are returning home after traveling the sword coast. I wasn’t sure where Caer-Dal was, so I thought it was fictional. Perhaps you have grandchildren in Icewind Dale and you aimed to visit them now that you have the time.
These opening posts would be a good time to establish why you character would brave the weather and wilds of the bleak north.

You probably want to use spoilers for this kind of thing. It helps keep spam chat down in the channel. For example...

Turq, reporting in! I am returning from Mirabar, where I have been learning to brew Miribaran Firewine. Ahh, to return home!

Mostly, I'm not sure about Baldrick's geographic origin. Although I spent a lot of my adolescence in the Forgotten Realms (and Krynn), that was ... er... a long time ago.

Rodalas, read the intro closely, we are not starting in an inn, we are starting with an avalanche!

Who truly understands the mind of the fey? If the eladrin sees an inn, perhaps, for them, there is an inn.
Getting hit by an avalanche might convince them otherwise, but perhaps not...

Just waiting on Aggrammar’s introduction post and we’ll get moving. In the interest of keeping the game moving, I won’t always wait for everyone to post, but to start the adventure, I thinks it’s prudent.

Apologies for being the one delaying everything - I usually am a reliable poster, but just moved house on Sunday and things have been hectic :P
Updating now!
EDIT: Guys, are there reach mechanics in D&D 5e? I would like to buy a longspear for Aggrammar.

Yup, though the only weapons listed in the PHB with that property are: Glaive, Halberd, Lance*, Pike, and Whip. I'm guessing Pike is more-or-less equivalent to Longspear, but you'll have to confirm that with Greycastle. All of these weapons are also two-handed, except Lance and Whip.
PHB (p. 147): Reach weapons add 5 feet to your reach when you attack with them, as well as when determining your reach for opportunity attacks.
*Note that the Lance confers disadvantage if attacking within 5 feet, and it is two-handed unless you are mounted.
Baldrick Longhall |
Oh right - sorry, I forgot Aggrammar was a cleric. These are actually all Martial weapons. (Dwarven Combat Training gives you proficiency in a few martial weapons, but nothing with reach.)
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Bear in mind that Season 10 rules allow you to swap one martial weapon proficiency for another, so you could swap battle axe or war hammer proficiency for whip...

Lol. A pike would make a fine long spear.
Mир |
Mир is a very non-standard goliath in personality. He does not seem competitive and also seems to make a point to guard and take care of others that are weaker than himself. Likely your communications with him involve him grunting and using body language to convey his responses. He very rarely speaks.

They had to close my school down today for 4 days due to a Covid case. Thank God I am teaching from home.

Cases are up in our state. People are happy to run around without masks. It really is sad to see, and they complain about not going back to school. My school has about 2300 kids, even with half at school at a time that is waay too many.
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Hey, boss! Can anyone claim these certs from D&D Celebration 2020?
I want to claim a Cocoa Mug for Turq... The rest are mostly special familiars, and I think a cert for special knowledge of the Netherese...
Rodalas Windrace |
Turq, it looks like I have permission to start a D and D club at school. Could we use your sheet for the kids?

Sounds good. Just remind them to Choose File -> Make a Copy, and they are good to go! You may need to finesse it so that the columns remain in place.

Holy moley, I just saw a thumbnail on YouTube, have yet to watch it, that Rune Knight is coming in Tasha's Guide! Please, please one of our Fighters use that archetype!
I think I have settled on Cavalier, but I love the flavor of the Rune Knight and would love to see one in our group!
Anyway, I will confirm that it IS coming in Tasha's Cauldron shortly! ^_^
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
D'oh, I was thinking the echo knight from the Critical Role Wildmount book. The Rune Knight will still be amazing flavor for the dwarvish fighters we have in party!
It sounds pretty amazing!
EDIT: Or a certain goliath character, since it is originally intended to be Giant runic magic... ^_^

I preordered both the physical copy with Grazz't on the cover and the D and D Beyond so I can use character options. When would we be able to use it in this campaign?
