In all seriousness, I've been looking forward to this NPC since the beginning of the campaign. She's a lot of fun to play. XD
In the few posts we've seen thus far I get why that might be the case! "Cheery Kuthite Elf Lady" is not something I expected to see. :)
Torsten Runeforger |
Really sorry to hear that! Get some rest and I hope you feel better soon
Yhrrilka |
Feel better, hoss!
Torsten Runeforger |
I’ll get a post up soon…I was under the impression that I had made one! So twas I who dropped the ball
Yhrrilka |
Sorry, on my end last week was a crushing grind; two separate projects insisted they were the most important thing ever that required absolutely all of my attention. I'll review and post by tonight at the latest, but I'll try and make it earlier.
Yhrrilka |
Well I don't think you'll be getting any takers here!
Torsten Runeforger |
What buffs are up? Before heading to see the Emperor I'm sure that we'd have the usual buffs up (shield, shocking fists, lifesense). But I don't know how much time has passed, and given the no magic rule, I doubt that we'd have a chance to put anything else up.
Torsten Runeforger |
Shield and Lifesense are up, but no energy enhancement (that is 10 min/Lvl).
Also surprise rounds when reposition/trip/aoo springs off of a standard action can be nasty!
Yhrrilka |
I'll take "Sentences I Really Never Thought I'd Hear," for $1200, Ken.
Torsten Runeforger |
It certainly felt good to pull the entire thing off! So many d20s have to fall decently, but when they do it’s a thing of beauty
Edit: The elemental damage wasn’t up! So about 99 damage by my count.
18 + 4 + 16 + 10 + 18 + 7 + 20 + 6 = 99
Not sure if it matters, as I doubt that a sorcerer has 100+ HP. But feels wrong to take the full damage when that buff wasn’t up
Your Benevolent Dictator |
Nice job avoiding a much more difficult encounter. Refusing to play blood pig results in every enemy in the area attacking you simultaneously. Cue epic arena battle - that includes the insanity of a rod of wonder-wielding emperor firing away with mad abandon. XD
I have more to write in Gameplay, but I figure you'll want to react to the rooms first. XD
Yhrrilka |
(Felix finds the "Slavatore" typo like, two hours too late, starts wailing like after Brad Pitt opened the box at the end of Seven.)
Torsten Runeforger |
While Torsten doesn’t trust Laori at all, I’d feel bad for her. She comes across so nice. The sweetest disciple of the God of torture that exists.
Yhrrilka |
Ril's feelings are more mixed. I figure "back home," it was probably not too uncommon for the Burning Suns to have to work with others that were no angels. And besides, she did swear a blood oath.
All that notwithstanding, I keep worrying how this can go south... :-(
Yhrrilka |
On a moderately related note, you were looking for a good map of Savatore's home?
Yhrrilka |
I keep seeing these maps posted on Reddit, and they're always places we've just been. Got any more places you're missing maps? Side-quest us and let this guy catch up. XD
Yhrrilka |
Today in "Typos Felix found too late, that will annoy him for AGES," We bring you "squablling."
/facepalm
Torsten Runeforger |
On a related note, while researching deity stuff, I stumbled upon a forum post from 2016 involving an inquisitor of Torag and some flower-holding children. Ring any bells. XD
I don't. Could you please show me what you are referring to?
Your Benevolent Dictator |
Torsten Runeforger |
Right! Can’t believe I forgot that. Yeah, Torag is kind of a jerk. And what a scenario that was…
Yhrrilka |
Sorry, I'll have something up by tonight at the latest. /sheepish
Yhrrilka |
(reads some of the thread, horrified)
"Kid, the flower's dangerous, you've got to put that down," was that hard of a DC? Jeebus.
Torsten Runeforger |
Sadly no, I live on the east coast. Best of luck on the move!
Torsten Runeforger |
Level up time! I'll double check all the rules and do it as soon as I can. :)
Torsten Runeforger |
Level 9!
* ABP: Resistance +3
* HP: +6 (monk) + 4 (con) + 1 (FCB) = +11 (103 total)
* Saves: None? I forget. When it is 4.5 it rounds down, right?
* Feat: Vital Strike!
* DR 2/adamantine
* Improved Evasion (Ex): At 9th level, a monk’s evasion ability improves. He still takes no damage on successful Reflex saving throws against attacks, but henceforth he takes only half damage on failed saves. A helpless monk does not gain the benefit of improved evasion.
* Spell Points: +2
* Sphere Talent: Lvl 9: Alteration Sphere Lycanthropic: You can only target yourself with your shapeshift ability. You cannot gain the Mass Alteration nor Ranged Alteration talents.) Gain Agile -> Dodge (+2 Dodge AC) for 1 minute per level under blank transformation (does not change his basic makeup)
* * Fearless (Ex): At 3rd level, you gain a +4 bonus on saving throws made against fear and a +1 natural armor bonus. At 9th level, you gain immunity to fear, and your natural armor bonus increases to +2.
* Strength of the Tyrant (Ex): At 9th level, you gain a +2 inherent bonus to your Strength.
* Fists: Count as magic, cold iron and silver for damage resistance
Huge level!
When looking through the brute sphere...again...I noticed a line.
Smash (Whenever you successfully perform a bull rush, drag, overrun, or reposition maneuver against a creature (other than with maneuvers performed as a free action), that creature suffers damage equal to your unarmed strike or a light weapon you are wielding. This qualifies your bull rush, drag, overrun, and reposition maneuvers for feats and talents such as Power Attack, suffering a penalty to your CMB in exchange for increased damage.
You may use your unarmed strike or a light weapon you are holding to make these maneuvers, meaning you may add their enhancement bonus, as well as spells or feats which increase their attack bonus such as Weapon Focus, to your CMB when performing a bull rush, drag, overrun, or reposition maneuver.)
Follow Through (Whenever you hit a target with an attack action, you may make a bull rush or reposition maneuver against the target as a free action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. You may use your weapon to perform this maneuver, meaning your weapon’s enhancement bonus, as well as spells that increase attack bonuses or feats such as Weapon Focus, apply to the maneuver.)
This means that I can't get the unarmed damage from reposition while using follow-through. Damn! So switching it to Quick Force.
Quick Force
You may perform a bull rush, drag, or reposition combat maneuver as a move action instead of a standard action. You must still have movement remaining in a round in order to move with your target, such as your 5-foot step. You may expend your martial focus to perform a bull rush, drag, or reposition as a swift action. At +10 base attack bonus, whenever you perform a bull rush, drag, or reposition combat maneuver as a move action, you may move with the creature as part of that action; in essence, using the action both to move and perform the maneuver.
-------------
This means that Torsten loses Shove. Instead of using his move action to shove, he instead will use his move action to reposition. So I'm replacing Jester (buffs shove) with quick force. What does this all mean?
(1) Move action reposition. If it works, then the enemy takes unarmed damage.
(2) If reposition works, then free action trip.
(3) Standard action vital strike.
(4) If attack hits, it triggers a free action reposition.
(5) If the enemy isn't tripped, then this is a second chance to trip them as a free action.
(6) Free action flurry.
Now...usually there are an unlimited amount of free actions per turn. This combo potentially has 4 free actions. The first is a trip if reposition works, the second is reposition if an attack hits, a third free action as the second reposition can trigger a trip, and finally flurry. This won't always happen, as always this relies on lots of good dice rolls. I think that the entire wombo combo only has worked once so far.
After having realized the rules said more than I thought they did, what this means is that Torsten can't shove anymore, and his second reposition doesn't cause damage.
So there we go! Another level, another audit, another issue found. Gods, really sorry about finding these issues. Hopefully that will be the last one. For TL/DR, because of not noticing how 2 combat talents interacted, Torsten now has 2 opportunities to reposition, and thus 2 opportunities to trip. However, he can't shove. So a full combo now does less damage, but getting a trip off is now more likely.
Alteration sphere time. Having +2 AC for 9 minutes is alright for a spell point. At lvl 10 it becomes 100 minutes! It also gets buffed up to +2 AC and +4 initiative. Finally at lvl 11 for a cost of 2 spell points that don't come back, this buff becomes permanent. It takes 3 levels and 3 talents, but it's a good investment!
Whew! So much to go through. Wombo combo got changed. He is now immune to fear, goes up to Strength 24.
edit: Character sheet is updated. Will have to audit again, I'm sure, due to moving pieces. As a note to Ril: Martial flexibility will usually use "break defenses." Meaning whenever Torsten succeeds at Reposition, it will provoke an AOO for you. Given that he can get 2 attempts now, it makes fighting the same person worthwhile for us, so that Ril can get that AOO.
If you would prefer not to worry about the AOO, please tell me, and I'll plan to pick up a different combat talent with MF.

New post due to length.
Torsten is fighting a human fighter. The fighter is lvl9, with Str20, Dex13, +2 deflection, +2 plate armor, +2 natural armor, +1 dodge. So the fighter has AC27 and CMD 27. He is not evil. 85HP.
Move action reposition: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (7) + 20 = 27 Works!
Damage add 4 if foe is prone: 1d8 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16 Damage as it wasn't a free action
Cold: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Acid: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Trip if Reposition happens: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (15) + 20 = 35 Works!
AOO if tripped: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (5) + 17 = 22 AC drops to 23 for being prone. The AOO misses
Standard action Vital Strike: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (15) + 17 = 32
Damage add 4 if foe is prone: 2d8 + 13 ⇒ (2, 5) + 13 = 20
Cold: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Acid: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Reposition if hit: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (5) + 20 = 25 Fails. No trip as the first one already succeeded. But if that one had failed then this would have been his second chance
Free action Flurry: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (3) + 17 = 20 Misses
Total Damage and the fighter is left prone on the ground: 16 + 5 + 4 + 19 + 4 + 8 = 56 The unoptimized lvl 9 fighter is left badly hurt and lying on his back, where he rethinks his life choices in agreeing to be the test subject for a gestalt PC.
And that is how the new wombo combo works. No shove, but 2 attempts to take a person down and only the first reposition can cause damage. Overall it's less total damage, but an increased chance of causing trip.
This was partly for myself to help me get a grip on what this combo is like.
Your Benevolent Dictator |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Yes, fractional BAB/saves round down. I just have it listed on the website because my in-person group is multi-class heavy. XD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm glad you caught that. I'm guessing 'Jester' actually refers to the 'Slapper' talent? XD I think the proposed fix is a good one, and the new wombo combo appears to check out. The damage loss is offset by the increased battlefield control.
Torsten Runeforger |
Works for me! Though with the brains of the outfit not here, I think that Torsten will be in trouble.
Torsten Runeforger |
Sorry to hear it, take it easy and I hope you feel better soon
Your Benevolent Dictator |
This has been a true week from hell. Sickest I've been in a decade + my wife's ankle got sprained + had to take a friend to the ER + someone tried to break into our house. Everything's okay now, though. I'm taking the rest of today off to finish recovering and will start things back up after work tomorrow.
Torsten Runeforger |
God! Any of those by itself would be stressful. Sounds horrific, hope things take a quick upturn
Yhrrilka |
Sorry about that guys, I crashed hard. Repeatedly getting up in the middle of the night, every night, I'd forgotten how hard that can be on you (Grumbaki, IDK how you're doing it with the new spud). GM, sounds like you had a rough ride too, sorry to hear it. On the mend now?
I'll go read up on Gameplay to see what I missed. I assume we're en route to the what's-their-names to see about the guy?
And GM, like Grumbaki, I'm east coast too (NJ), so couldn't have helped you out there, sorry.
Torsten Runeforger |
Welcome back! Glad to have you here’s :)
And the answer is caffeine. It’s a wonderfully addictive bandaid to the bleeding wound that is sleep deprivation.
Yhrrilka |
Gods know I love me a cup of coffee or five, G, but as I've rounded the pole for age 50, it just stopped helping the way it once did. It's kind of scary, like being a Jem'Hadar and waking up one day to find the white doesn't quite do it for you any more. :)
Torsten Runeforger |
I feel that way for Rockstars (0 sugar ones are my thing). After awhile they go from helping to being normal. :p
