GM Bret |
Welcome!
I always do my best to run a friendly game. I want people to have fun and everyone to be able to laugh when something crazy happens.
I really want everyone to be able to post at least once a day, preferably more. If you are going to be away from the game for a short period (such as attending a convention, on a short vacation, or needing to do some business travel), I would ask that you please post that here so everyone involved knows.
Character Profiles
Please have a profile header displaying a brief overview of your character's current status. At the least it should include current/maximum hit points, AC (including flat footed and touch), saving throws, and any pools of expendable resources such as panache, grit, arcane pool, rounds of rage, rounds of bardic performance or other things that get expended as you use powers.
In the character profile, please include a complete stat block. You may put it under a spoiler if you wish, but if you do so please put it under a single spoiler. I do not want it split across multiple spoilers.
If you have your character sheet on a different site, please have a link to it in your character’s headers. This allows me to pull it up from any post by the character, rather than having to go to the profile and from there to the external sheet.
If you want examples, the PbP GM Kit has the pregenerated characters done in BB Code. Use those as a general guideline.
Botting
Botting is when someone else makes a roll or otherwise does something on behalf of your character. Bot is short for robot.
Please include botting instructions in your profile and a general tactics in case someone else needs to bot your character. It is alright if you put this in a separate spoiler from the stat block, but once again please don't split it over multiple spoilers.
if there are resources you don’t mind being used up by botting, please say so. If there are resources you never want a person botting using, it is alright to say that as well.
If it makes you more comfortable, you could specify who you want to run your character when you can’t post.
If your character has any abilities that interrupt play such as Swashbuckler Parry and Repost, Dual Cursed Oracle’s Misfortune Revelation, the Bard Spell Saving Finale or anything else that would interfere with resolving a check, I ask that you have something in your Botting instructions about when you want this used. The reason is that it can really slow down a PbP every action is serialized.
In my experience, creating a bot structure can help with your own posts as well. Assuming you put complete dice expressions in the botting directions, it makes it easy to cut and paste.
Initiative in PbP
I will roll all Initiative checks for PCs and NPCs, sort them, and organize them into blocks. I will bold the names of characters that should act. I will take the NPC actions in order and reserve the right to delay an NPC in order to make them act with a group of other NPCs.
When it is your turn to act, please post. Do not wait for someone else to post just because they had a higher Initiative. If you know what you want to do but want to wait for someone else’s action to go off first, just say that.
Here is an example of how you could post before another player but have it go off after another player:
Sir Cumference waits for the elven archer Mister Oakleaf to get done firing his arrow before charging the Wily Snark.
Attack with Pointy Stick: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Piercing Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
I (and many other PbP GMs) do grouped Initiative in order to keep the adventure moving. In PbP people will have different posting schedules and often live in different time zones, Waiting for everyone to post in exact initiative order could make a single round of combat take days to resolve.
Within the rules, it is as if everyone within the same Initiative block delayed until they could post.
Chronicle information
In order to be able to generate a PFS chronicle, I ask that each character please provide me the following information:
Player name:
Character name:
OPF #:
Character #:
Faction:
Day Job roll (or a note that you have no day job):
Rules Questions
If there are rules questions, please post them in the discussion thread rather than interrupting the gameplay thread with rules debates.
In closing
Come join me for a fun game!

Ehhh, looking at all of your characters in more focus, it doesn't look like we have anyone with decent Charisma? Also since the title is about a library, I was thinking maybe a Bard would be a better fit for the party?
If y'all don't think that's as big of a concern as traps and locked doors, then I will totally stay as the Pregen Merisiel Rogue.
Just a thought to consider :)
Also, I rarely play a pregen - do you need the Pregen's day job roll, or the character to which the chronicle will be applied?
GM Bret |
I have always done it off the pregen used, which means most do not get a day job.
Elris Kayne |
Oh and sorry about not replying about a Charisma heavy character (been a bit busy getting ready for Gameday), if you wanted to play a bard I think that would be fine too but it seems you already have your pregen made. I think either would work so it would be your preference on what would be more enjoyable. I am sure we can push up some Charisma checks with resources if we run into other people in the library.
Toral Kargar |
Thanks for everything GM!
Name: noral
Character Name: Toral Kargar
PFS #: 314670
Character: 9
Faction: Exchange
Day job: prof merchant: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (7) + 18 = 25
Class: Shaman 5
Track: Normal
Toral is not charisma based but has a +16 diplomacy modifier.
GM Bret |
I don’t mind the switch of characters. I do need to review what level everyone is to check what tier we are in. I prefer the level of pregen match the tier played.
Khouri's Pregen |
The problem is I don't play often enough to get characters to 4th level, so this chronicle sheet would be functionally useless to me. (My main character is still only level 3.) So if it's a choice between a level 4 pregen, or just the original level 1 character I was intending I will just switch back to my actual character, Grelthe. *shrug* She's more fun to play anyway.
Sorry I misunderstood how pregens work, I've only played one like once before, and it was a while ago.
GM Bret |
Khouri,
Personally, I always prefer people play their own characters. They generally have more interest if it is a character they created. That said, if you want to play a pregen you can. If that pregen is 4th level and you are applying it to a first level character, there is even the option of downgrading gold and applying it immediately.
Please decide what character you want credit applied to. Decide if you are playing that character or a pregen.
I am spending the day in preparation for all my GD IX tables and contacting the players at my tables who haven't given me chronicle information yet.
Thanks,
GM Bret
Grelthe, the singing Paladin |
Ok then I will just play my character, as that is my preference as well. Here she is. Just finishing up the header.
Grelthe, the singing Paladin |
Thank you for letting me know!

Arin Qualnoh |
Hiya folks. I'm here to round out the group and either play this Oracle (which puts us in high tier), or else one of:
- Wizard (spellslinger) 3
- Wizard 2
- Kineticist 1
- Magus 1
- Inquisitor 1
- Investigator (Empiricist) 1
- Cavalier (order of the shield) 1
- Bloodrager 1
Taking input, with a final decision probably only waiting until I turn in tonight (so 4-5 hours from now, should be sufficient given that gameday is upon us).
Arin Qualnoh |
And if there are no preferences or input, then I'll assume everybody wants to stick with high tier and I'll keep Arin.
Elris Kayne |
One of the Wizards or the Empiricist might be thematic and useful in this Library/Research type mission, if we want to stay with the 4 player adjustment.
Arin Qualnoh |
Derp, did I say oracle 5, this is an oracle 6 which eliminates this option. So it's going to have to be one of the others (sorry about that).
The Wizard 3 would be the obvious option if you want to max APL.
Grelthe, the singing Paladin |
Looking at the math, I'm pretty sure we stay high tier, 4-player adjustment regardless of what character you bring, so up to you what sounds most fun I guess?
Ela Kukai |
Okay, then I'll go with the spellslinger for something off-beat.

Oh hey, since I switched off the pregen, can I forfeit my day job roll downtime to do a diplomacy check for a Silver Crusade faction goal instead?

GM Bret |
I have just posted the opening text to the adventure.
I also have links to a Google slide presentation in my header and on the campaign page. I will be maintaining the maps and adding various handouts in the slide deck as the adventure progresses. Please take the time to add your avatar to Slide 2 and help us determine a marching order. For this adventure most of the time it will not be important, but I would like to have it if something comes up where it is appropriate.
Please keep any mechanics questions in the Discussion area here.
Hope everyone is ready for what can be a very fun infiltration adventure!
GM Bret |
I will update tomorrow.
Figure out if there is anything you want to buy or other preparations you want to make. Those of you who are prepared casters also have the opportunity to swap around your spells.
Elris Kayne |
Looking through some possibilities now:
-I prepared Kreighton's Perusal, might interest other divine casters.
-Also might buy a dosage or two of Clear Ear, for those that won't do the talking.
Ela Kukai |
You are in a major port city. No problem getting an NPC to teach you a spell today.
Item purchases would have the normal fame limitations.
Interesting, so learn from an NPC is nominally half price of transcribe, so 20gp for level 2, 5gp for level 1 (etc etc), right?
If I have the right of it, I'll make a short list (probably 4-5 2nd level spells) in a short while.
Ela Kukai |
Right, was just referring to the learning side of it. 15gp for level 1, 60gp for level 2.
Yes, thank you, will look over your book as well. Of course have a look through Ela's. Unfortunately the gunslinger archetype is really rough on selection: no cantrips and *four* (!!) opposition schools. But hey, if you're a little low on evocation, maybe...
Ela Kukai |
Copying from Igor's spell book.
2nd (2 x 40gp) Flaming Sphere, Flurry of Snowballs
1st (4 x 10gp) Disguise Self, Protection from Evil, Shocking Grasp, Vanish
120gp total transcription
Elris Kayne |
Yeah, my Spellslinger switched to Myrmidarch after their first level. Although at the lower end it has turned them into just pumping their pistol with a bunch of bonuses and blasting things rather than casting.
Elris Kayne |
3x Clear Ear for 45gp

Copying from Igor's spell book.

Spellcraft take 10 of 21, you only needed a 17 for the 2nd level spells.
Looks good. I will make a note to include it on the chronicle. If I fail to note it, just remind me.
You can memorize the new spells for tomorrow if you want.
Grelthe, the singing Paladin |
Hey, just heads up I wil be away from internet & cell service Monday- Wednesday afternoons.
I will add a section on my character sheet for botting instructions for combat, for anything outside of combat it is probably best if I just try to assist other people's skill checks. The only skills I'm decent at are: diplomacy, knowledge (nobility), and performance (sing). I have some special abilities from my traits for diplomacy, but nothing that is going to compare with Toral's bonuses, so I will assist instead.
I should hopefully still be able to check in once a day though
GM Bret |
Do we have any way to keep track of time? Or is just general awareness going to be good enough?
You should try to track time. I will tell you how long tasks take, but someone in the group should be tracking it. If you need a couple of hints, I can give some.
Grelthe, the singing Paladin |
FYI my camping plans got waylaid (mountain is on fire) so I'll be more available than expected.
GM Bret |
FYI my camping plans got waylaid (mountain is on fire) so I'll be more available than expected.
Sorry your camping trip got canceled like that.
GM Bret |
@Grelthe,
How do you get +3 to Perform Sing? It looks like you don’t have any ranks in it and with a 15 Charisma that would only be +2 for untrained.
GM Bret |
Elris has Kreighton's Perusal prepared, that should reduce the time to get one success for me I think. Possibly taking an hour off the time or something similar.
It is a 1st level spell, but very appropriate to the task at hand. It effectively allows you to figure out which books don’t have what you want in them.
I will give you a +3 bonus on the check when you use it. It will still take the listed amount of time to find and copy something useful — doing otherwise would affect too many of the behind the scenes mechanics.
Grelthe, the singing Paladin |
Yes I do have a rank in it. Ranks in diplomacy, kn.nobility & perf.sing. (I'm planning on taking a level in skald next).
2 ranks from class -1 INT, +1 favored class bonus, +1 from skilled (human-raised half-orc racial trait).
GM Bret |
Oh! It isn’t a class skill for Paladins! I keep forgetting how limited some of the classes are on which skills are class skills,
Grelthe, the singing Paladin |
Do we want to keep searching the big room until exhausted (since everyone can roll here), or try a new smaller room? Or scout the whole area quickly to determine which books are kept where (which skill checks we can roll)?
GM Bret |
The way I understand it, you automatically get another text by spending half as much time. I compute time in terms of person-minutes so you can split up if you want or all stay there.
If you spend the full time increment you can roll again. I will allow you to find out at the half-way mark if you have found everything there is to find when I give you the next clue.
---Quoting from the Research Rules
Whether you succeed or fail at the check, you can continue spending time searching a room. You will receive one additional text by spending half as much time continuing. You will be told when there are no more texts to be found in an area.
Ela Kukai |
Hey everyone. I just wanted to let you know that I'm going to be away next weekend, the morning of Saturday, the 19th through sometime in the evening on the 20th (US/Pacific time). As per my typical practice I catch up and make posts the night of my return.
Hopefully it's barely or not at all noticeable since that is the weekend and I do like to catch up on the day I return.
GM Bret |
In order to help you reference room descriptions, I have put a set of links in the Campaign Information which appear at the top of the page. I will strike out a room number once there are no more clues to be found there.
GM Bret |
Sorry, I'm going to be very busy today. I most likely will not be able to get in an update until tomorrow.
Hopefully everyone will have chosen which room they want to investigate next.
Grelthe, the singing Paladin |
Hey, the additional hallway and room (B11) that popped up coming off of B10 - is that visible? Did that happen when they pulled the lever?
GM Bret |
No one has gone into the room, but the door opened. I added the room to the map so you would be able to see there is a new room.
Note that the hallway B6 is also there, including the stairs up. There was nothing of interest in the hallway itself.
