F NG Imperial Sorceress 17| RETIRED | Completed AoE adventure path living out her life much more happily now it is over.

Dora breathes a sigh of relief and her shoulders droop somewhat, as the clockwork pieces scatter over the floor.

"This is crazy. I still don't understand why Reginald would have gone to the effort of building all of this down here?!"

She looks around for the next obvious exit. "We probably need to keep going don't we? Devon, you took a few blows, do you want me to have a look?" She asks, rounding on the Paladin with worried eyes.

Devon lays hands on himself, healing some of his injuries. "Yes, thank you. We should take a few minutes to heal and refocus, but we shouldn't wait too long. Vancaskerkin has to be lurking about here somewhere."

RETIRED: after forty years of forensic investigation for the Starwatch.

Jack sets to work with his medical training before letting the others apply their own methods.

"Because he's a paranoid ego-maniac with a fetish for clocks?" He suggests in answer to Dora's question as the group works.

F NG Imperial Sorceress 17| RETIRED | Completed AoE adventure path living out her life much more happily now it is over.

"Well, I suppose so." Dora says uncertainly to Jack's theory. "I just can't help but wonder if there is something more to it. A person doesn't just do something like this with no motivation. Do they?"

She helps Devon get back to fighting fit, lingering over him for a moment before swiftly helping Jack after.

"Well he has a secret lair to protect." Jack points out. "As to why he became the Rumormonger... well people do strange things sometimes. There's probably someone out there who's made a deal with a god to become Primarch of Absalom for no other reason than that the position exists. It's ridiculous really. They'd probably take over, proclaim their evil intentions and then sit in some sort of magical tower and simply wait to be defeated. It's the plot of every penny dreadful adventure novel out there."

Devon gives Jack a quizzical look as Dora finishes tending to his wounds. "I don't know anything about that. Let's find Vancaskerkin and kick his butt again!"

You head back upstairs and go to the door at the end of the east hall. At the north end of this chamber, a grotesque, squid-like creature lies trapped in a pool of deep water. Metal staples and stitches hold its mutilated body together, and numerous tubes embedded in the creature extract a black fluid.

The creature waves its tentacles angrily. "Who are you? Agents of Vancaskerkin, come to torment me further? Haven't I suffered enough?!? That worm of a man and his demonic lapdog have inflicted pain on me enough for a thousand lifetimes!"

RETIRED: after forty years of forensic investigation for the Starwatch.

"We're actually here to take him in." Jack replies, pulling out his badge. "We are agents of the Starwatch. If you can aid us in apprehending him and swear not to damage the city we will do everything we can to free you."

"Argh!" the beast wails. "Every moment I live is agony! Do you know what he had that demon do to me? It carved me into pieces to bring me to this tiny chamber, keeping me alive with foul magic, then stitched me back together! He pumps the ink out of my body to print his lies! Why should I trust you to help me? I trust no one!"

RETIRED: after forty years of forensic investigation for the Starwatch.

Since the creature just revealed, however inadvertently, that it is the source of the Rumormonger's ink, Jack leaves the talking to others and sets to work doing what he can to disconnect and disable the machinery on this end - without getting within reach of the squid-like creature.

Dani holds up her badge to the creature. "This badge certifies that we are Agents of Starwatch. We are here to put an end to Vancaskerkin for all of the crimes he's committed and all of the lives he's ruined, including yours. You can choose to not believe us and attack us, but that will only end in more suffering. It costs you nothing to trust us, and help us set things right."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 28 ⇒ (5) + 28 = 33

The creature's tentacles continue to writhe, slapping at Jack as he draws near. "No! Don't touch those! Do it wrong and it will kill me!"

It turns a beady eye on Dani. "I am Levialar. Reginald Vancaskerkin was once my pawn. I captured him at a young age and kept him hidden beneath the waves for years, teaching him occult secrets. At last, when I felt I had fully conquered Reginald’s mind, I sent the man back to the surface to carry out my will.

"I had intended to use him to establish a powerful cult in the Puddles, but Reginald proved more resilient than I could’ve guessed. He formed a pact with the god Norgorber and was able to defeat me, trapping me within a clockwork prison and transporting me here. Now, he has become quite powerful, indeed! Only somebody that has accumulated more secret knowledge than himself can permanently kill the Rumormonger!

"I am one such being. If you can somehow lure him here and let me strike the final blow, I can put an end to him, once and for all. Failing that, I can perform a short ritual to transfer a portion of my knowledge to one of you. It won't be enough on its own, but if you can find more secret knowledge here in Reginald's lair, you may be able to finally kill him yourselves!"

F NG Imperial Sorceress 17| RETIRED | Completed AoE adventure path living out her life much more happily now it is over.

Dora at first feels great sympathy for the creature and is horrified at its treatment, but isn't quite sure how to react with its most recent admission.

Clearing her throat, Dora questions, "So you, yourself, admit to holding the man hostage and treating him poorly yet you complain how he treats you when the tables are turned? Please do explain to us how that is equitable?"

Dani burst out into laughter, going the extra mile to double over and reach into her pack and pull out the last cookie treat that wasn't used earlier to bribe the witnesses. When she stands up she turns to Dora and shoves it in her mouth. Facing her with wide eyes, she mouths Zip-it!

Finishing her laughter, she holds her hand over Dora's mouth and forces the cookie in while turning to the tentacle creature. "Ignore my young apprentice, she still doesn't know her place."

"We'll get him here, you stand ready to fulfil your part."

Grabbing Dora, she pulls her from the room.

RETIRED: after forty years of forensic investigation for the Starwatch.

Jack smirks and continues to examine the mechanisms, although he now does so with a rather different viewpoint on the whole thing. This creature is, by its own admission, a danger to the city. If it should expire down here that might be best for all concerned.

F NG Imperial Sorceress 17| RETIRED | Completed AoE adventure path living out her life much more happily now it is over.

Dora's eyes open in shock just as her mouth gets stuffed with the cookie, which she finishes, just in time to be dragged out of the room.

"What did you do that for?" She exclaims, "That was practically making a deal with a devil, and now we have our badges back, that not how we should be acting. That thing doesn't deserve its rewards, and how do you know it has any thread of truth?"

"Better the devil that you know, hmmm?" Dani says, folding her arms across her chest. "We have a short-term ally here who can help us get rid of the monster he helped create. Given the fact that we have been unsuccessful in doing this ourselves, it seemed prudent we take it up on it's offer and use it to our advantage."

To the last part, she shrugs "I don't. Call it a hunch for the misery that Reginald has put it through, perhaps? We are always able to come back and deal with it later if need be."

"When the sudden but inevitable betrayal comes, we'll be ready," Devon says resolutely. "For now, let's root out Reginald. Onwards!"

RETIRED: after forty years of forensic investigation for the Starwatch.

Thankful that his companions are aware of the probability of betrayal Jack follows along quietly.

You return to the now inert conveyor system and move through the doors. When operating, this whole section would create pulp from wood chips and feed it into rollers to create the paper used to print thousands of copies of Eyes on Absalom each day. All the clockwork machinery is dormant at the moment.

A thorough search reveals a secret door leading into a dark chamber. A pool of bubbling, black liquid fills the center of this room. Scraps of black paper float in the pool and words seem to drift through the liquid. Whispers emanate from the pool.

This appears to be a literal pool of secrets. It might give you the knowledge needed to defeat Reginald if you dare to immerse yourself within it...

RETIRED: after forty years of forensic investigation for the Starwatch.

Jack shrugs off his overcoat and divests himself down to shirt and breeches.

"It makes sense that I go in." He says, forestalling protests. "I am more resilient than the rest of you and with some assistance from Dani we can ensure that Vancaskerkin will never see me coming. Additionally you will all have far more resources to get me out than I would in your place."

With that said he marches into the pool.

Jack immediately regrets wading into the pool, as it proves to be highly acidic! The acid eats away at the rogue's flesh, but as it does so, the roiling fluid also fills his mind with dangerous and esoteric secrets!

Jack gains 1 Secret Knowledge point. He now has enough to permanently kill Reginald if he strikes the final blow.

RETIRED: after forty years of forensic investigation for the Starwatch.

The dhampir retreats from the pool as quickly as he can with teeth clenched.

"Dora, in my pack, white bottle." He grits out and then proceeds to pour the entire contents of the bottle over the worst affected areas. Whatever is inside neutralises the worst of the burning and some clean bandages deal with the rest.

Dani is glad Jack volunteered because she would have never done so. She stands by to assist him once he enters, unsure what will happen.

She agrees that that in the end the damage he endured was minimal for the information he obtained. When he explains he must strike the killing blow, she nods and comments "I just hope we know when that will be. Regardless, it's time to put an end to this."

You return to the entry stairs and head southwest. The west end of this L-shaped hall terminates in a set of huge metal doors. To the south, a large, crimson tapestry covers the wall at the far end of the hall. Thousands of lines of text constantly swirl and move across the tapestry’s surface. The tapestry’s ever-changing text contains every lie ever crafted by the Rumormonger’s minions, although it shows only a brief smattering of lies at any given time.

Past this room, cutting blades and press stamps hang from the ceiling of this C-shaped hall. Metal plates cover the floor, forming a conveyor belt that moves from north to south and travels around both corners of the room. Luckily, all the machinery here is currently inert.

The final room in the complex is cavernous, with long strips of parchment covering the walls. Waiting in the center of the room is Reginald Vancaskerkin, fully healed and ready to fight. Beside him are two glabrezu demons, each with eight clockwork tentacles grafted onto their backs! Each tentacle grips a quill as they write lies on the parchment strips. But they take a break from their efforts to turn towards you.

"This ends here and now!" Reginald insists!

"We agree! Your time is at an end, Reginald!"

Dani sets up their favorite song in a lingering composition before casting her most powerful spell over the enemies.

Negative Damage - Fort DC38: 14d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 4, 4, 2, 3, 3, 4, 2, 5, 4, 6, 1, 1) = 50

Voracious Gestalt:
You create a powerful spirit entity that grows and builds strength by consuming the spirits of foes you both slay. When you Cast the Spell, the gestalt deals 14d6 negative damage to all living creatures of your choice in the area, with a basic Fortitude save. Creatures you choose that end their turns in the area take 6d6 damage, with a basic Fortitude save.

At the end of each of your turns, if you killed a living creature during that turn or if the gestalt's damage killed a creature since the end of your prior turn, you add the slain creature's soul to the gestalt. The emanation's radius increases by 20 feet and the damage dealt by the aura increases by 1d6. (Note that this increase only happens once, even if you killed multiple living creatures that turn.) As normal for determining threat level, the GM determines if a creature is of significant enough threat to empower the gestalt; in general, a creature several levels below you rarely poses a significant threat.

Jack dodges under the steam and lands yet another blow as the Rumormonger's overdrive makes him careless. With the advantage on his side and his foe faltering the Doctor circles behind Vancaskerkin and unleashes powerful magic of his own!

Negative energy damage to Reggie and the demon, hopefully I can keep the cone off Devon, but if not... apologies! Staying next to Reggie so I will take an AOO if he has them.

Dora's focus turns to Reginald as she tries to cause him to implode.

Sustain spell, now target Reggie, same as before.

Dora then tries to shore up Devon's defenses to ensure he can continue against the onslaught.

Mask of Terror on Devon - 10 rounds. DC 38

Mask of Terror:
The target appears to be a gruesome and terrifying creature. The effect is unique to each observer, so a human viewing the target might see a demon with bloody fangs, but a demon observing the target might see a glowing angelic visage. When any creature attempts a hostile action against the target, the creature must attempt a Will save. It is then temporarily immune until the end of its next turn.

Success The creature is unaffected.
Failure The creature becomes frightened 2 before using its action.
Critical Failure The creature becomes frightened 2, and its action fails and is wasted

Devon turns aside from the steam, only getting slightly scalded. He grits his teeth and grabs his sword in two hands. "In Cayden's name!" he declares as he smites the vile Vancaskerkin!

Reggie takes the full brunt of Dora's implosion spell, his frame buckling and cracking under the strain. He resists Jack's exsanguination some, and the demon is unaffected. Devon lands two powerful blows, nearly pushing Reginald past his limits.

Reginald lands two heavy blows on Devon, but then Dani's voracious gestalt finally overwhelms him. The Rumormonger slumps to the ground, but the steam continues to pour from his overclocked body, increasing in intensity, and his whole frame shudders and strains. He's about to blow!

With his master's defeat, the glabrezu wisely teleports away. You race out of the room moments before Reginald's body explodes in a massive fireball! Clockwork body parts scatter all across the room, his remains smoldering and smoking. You are confident, though, that Reginald will not be reborn this time. The Rumormonger has been defeated, once and for all!

Jack waits just long enough to thrust his sword-cane into the Rumormonger once more and then flees with the rest!

"Well... that went well." He says, managing to get his breath back enough that it sounds realistic rather than dangerously winded.

Dora massages her temples and closes her eyes from the mental exertion. "That is not what I define as well but at least he is gone now, whatever he had become. My head is pounding."

She looks around at her colleagues - friends. "Was that enough? What we did? What do we do about his Reginald's previous captor - or captive?"

Dani is out of breath from all of the casting and playing and slumps down against the wall to catch her breath. "I can't believe it's finally over."

Once Dora makes mention of the ink creature, she frowns. "We could go grab reinforcements to handle that situation, I'm not in much shape to take on another dangerous foe right now."

F NG Imperial Sorceress 17| RETIRED | Completed AoE adventure path living out her life much more happily now it is over.

"Yes I suppose, as long as we have not freed it in destroying Reginald. I suppose I should stop calling him that now. He was certainly not Reginald anymore when we got to him. I think he was dead long before the Rumoumonger." Dora says, as if trying to convince herself of the fact.

"I suppose we should report back with the good news, its our duty after all."

RETIRED: after forty years of forensic investigation for the Starwatch.

"Indeed." Jack agrees. "That creature has admitted to forming cults and attempting to undermine the city. It can definitely wait a while longer, although I will recommend to Command that it be killed rather than set free to assail the city again."

In a moment of uncharacteristic compassion he puts a hand on Dora's shoulder and squeezes comfortingly. "You're right, you did not hurt Reginald. You did your duty and protected Absalom from the Rumormonger. Remember that."

"Thank you Jack," She mutters, and manages a small smile in his direction.
