Tristan de Lion
Tristan closes the bedroom door. He then goes to the other door; by Junior.
You want to open it? I am out of actions.
He winks.
Greta Gyllenhår
1 person marked this as a favorite.
are Junior and Tristan flirting with each other... it’s kind of cute, but this hardly seems like the right time...
Greta continues to guard the door, ready to punch anyone who tries to move through it.
GM Losonti
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Anevia takes the offered hand and uses it to move herself away from the door and toward some cupboards. "I think we should have some in--"
She's cut off by the appearance of another fiendish fire beetle, which lunges at her with its enormous mandibles. The creature, apparently disoriented by its sudden transit to the material plane, is fended off by her makeshift crutch.
Selann Juris
Seeing another beetle appear attacking Anevia again, Selann drops his casting and stabs at the creature.
attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Damage if that hits: 1d3 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + (6) = 9
Benedic
Benedic continues to concentrate on detecting evil.
Since this is the third round concentrating on detect evil, he should be able to detect the squares where evil is anywhere he can see, right? And if the evil is not in his field of vision, apparently he gets a sense of its direction: "3rd Round: The power and location of each aura. If an aura is outside your line of sight, then you discern its direction but not its exact location."
GM Losonti
Jeez, I'm sorry Benedic, I somehow completely missed you were doing that. Can you tell me which direction you're looking?
Benedic
From the back corner of his square, Benedic is looking diagonally across the room, which should allow him to see all squares in the 4x4 area of the room. He can't see around the corner, of course.
Massielo Cirus
|
Massielo looks at the new beetle and says "Maybe there are traps that activate as we open doors?" and swings at the beetle again.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Cold Iron magic Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Greta Gyllenhår
Greta frowns at the new arrival. "If there is someone hiding and summoning these things, they'll run out of spells eventually, right? I mean as long as we keep killing the bugs and keep blocking the doors eventually they'll run out of tricks, won't they?" While she speaks, the petite warrior maintains her position in the doorway, still ready to attack anyone or anything that tries to slip past her.
readied attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
for: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6 (cold-iron)
GM Losonti
Benedic, you wouldn't detect anything from that position. Assuming you'd like to relocate to check the corner, I can tell you that you would detect something then.
Selann expertly slays the beetle, which quickly begins to fade away just as its brother did. As Junior focuses in on his detection spell, he begins to get a clearer idea of what they're looking for. I'd ask you for an Arcana check, but common sense tells you that you can detect a faint aura of illusion magic.
Benedic
Sensing from his detect evil spell that there is evil present nearby and with an idea of its direction, Benedic steps closer and turns his head to see the corner of the room where Massielo is standing.
"There is something evil over there," he says in a quiet voice, nodding his head toward Massielo.
(If he can identify the square with the evil aura, he will say that as well.)
Massielo Cirus
|
Massielo looks scared at Benedic and points to himself moving his mouth as if to say "Me?" Then he realizes he means that it's in this general direction. He steps away from the corner trying to help Benedic pinpoint the source of the evil aura.
Selann Juris
Selann steps back to the corner and watches for another beetle.
Tristan de Lion
Tristan seeing Junior's gaze become a bit more eager than usual; begins walking in that direction.

Tristan attempts to grapple it!

miss chance 51 good: 1d100 ⇒ 63
Feeling his grip firmly grasp--something--scoutmaster Kevin?, the surprised Inquisitor grins.
I may need an Atonement--and some of Junior's soap--after this. I got something!
GM Losonti
Against all odds, Tristan tracks down the invisible enemy and manages to grab hold of them! The sight of the inquisitor wrestling with thin air is a memorable one.

Massielo sees that Tristan grabbed an invisible enemy and calls down water on him.
Cast Create Water on top of whoever Tristan seems to be grabbing.
GM Losonti
Half a dozen gallons of water materializes above Tristan's head, immediately drenching both him and his invisible opponent. The water outlines their figure, partially revealing their true location.
Obviously there's not much in the rules for create water vs invisibility, but I think it's reasonable for it to reduce the concealment to partial (20% miss instead of 50%), and that it would give him a +2 circumstance to escape the grapple. Does that seem fair?
Fred Junior
I find it hard to argue that the water isn't tucked into the person's clothing thus making the water invisible. I'm fine with this indicating the square this round but not the reduction of miss chance, mainly because I plan on using invisibility and don't want a 0th level spell reducing its effectiveness.
Junior continues to concentrate on his spell in case the summoner manages to get out of the situation.
GM Losonti
I definitely don't want Create Water to just be a cantrip version of Faerie Fire, so I think that even as it is the duration would be very short, maybe just a round.
Selann Juris
With Tristan grappling.... something, Selann focuses his attention on the water and sends a magical bit of acid at the target.
to hit: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
cover 21+ good: 1d100 ⇒ 2
I believe that makes my good roll in to a miss.
GM Losonti
It does, unfortunately.
Selann misjudges where his target is, and the glob of acid instead begins chewing into the wall behind Tristan and his opponent.
GM Losonti
Escape Grapple: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Tristan can feel and hear the efforts of his opponent to escape the grapple, but he holds on tightly, keeping them in place. "Curse you!" says the invisible voice.
Everyone is up again!
Benedic
Satisfied that Tristan has the spellcaster well in hand, Benedic steps back to Anevia's side and does his best to fight off the beetle.
Radiance, flanking: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 2 = 9
Slashing/cold iron/magic/good damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
GM Losonti
Selann killed the beetle last round, and in my infinite wisdom I forgot to delete it. Sorry I've been off my game lately.
Massielo Cirus
|
So, can I use the miss chance reduction in my action?
Massilo screams "I'll grab him!" and awkwardly jumps on the invisible attacker trying to help Tristan hold his grip.
Aid another: Tristan's grapple: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Caliban Tre'Athkar
Caliban, having only large flashy spells in memory, instead will incant a brief spell at the being grappled by Tristan and Mass...
Cast Daze DC 13 Will save only works on humanoids 4HD or less...

Miss chance (high is good): 1d100 ⇒ 86
Fred Junior
Cast Daze DC 13 Will save only works on humanoids 4HD or less...
You need line of sight to cast a targeted spell, unfortunately. I could see an argument that since he tried to escape a grapple with a grapple check he ruined his invis. A grapple check is a combat maneuver check which is a special kind of attack roll. However I could see this falling apart since he's not directly trying to harm anyone.
Junior doesn't want to get into the way but he also wants to punish the fiendish beatle summoner so he stows his warhammer as he moves and pulls out his very nice glaive awkwardly with one hand.
Tristan de Lion
Tristan attempts to maintain his grapple with Massilo's help.
Grabble: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 9 + 2 = 20
miss chance 51%+: 1d100 ⇒ 95
Perhaps, someone has rope? He is a bit squirmy here.
The Inquisitor then twists an arm (?) a bit more harshly than would be proper!
GM Losonti
Junior is correct, an invisible creature isn't a valid target for Daze unfortunately. I was a bit iffy on whether trying to break the grapple counts enough to break invisibility, so I asked a few GMs and the consensus was that it would not.
Tristan's determination overpowers any attempts to break free, and he successfully maintains his hold on the invisible summoner. Are you wanting to do anything in addition to holding the grapple?
Benedic
Whoopsie! Well, at least we got those poor rolls out of the queue.
Seeing that Anevia is in no danger, Benedic moves to Tristan's side and hands him a pair of manacles.
Maintaining the grapple lets you try to pin him, so I wonder if putting him in cuffs is comparable?
Tristan de Lion
Selann Juris
Selann moves over to watch the pair grapple the invisible enemy. He grins and loadly comments. "Maybe you should cut him up some! Then the pool of his blood would show where he is! Yeah, give him a chance to stop struggling. If he doesn't, start cutting."
Intimidate?: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Not sure it would apply, but I don't want to launch an attack into a 2-on-1 grapple!
GM Losonti
This is not how I expected this encounter to end up, lol
Tristan is able to drag his still unseen opponent off the desk and to the ground, where he'll get a chance to tie them up on his next turn. Selann's words draw a surprised gasp from the attacker, though it is somewhat difficult to read their face at the moment.
Tristan de Lion
Tristan turns to the camera; winking at GM Losonti
Glad to help!
Massielo Cirus
|
Massielo sits on the attacker.
Greta Gyllenhår
Greta regrasps her longhammer and considers moving forward to strike the invisible foe, but decides that her companions have things well in hand. Instead she readies her gauntleted fist again and continues guarding the door. As she does, she calls out, ”are we sure that’s the only invisible enemy here?”
Benedic
Still holding the manacles out for Tristan, Benedic frowns. "I am certain there are no other invisible foes who are evil," he states in response to Greta's question.
Selann Juris
Selann nods at Benedic's words, then grins at where he thinks the invisible head is. "So no allies! Good. If he doesn't cancel his invisibility and put his hand in the manacles, hold it over here and I'll cut it off!" He holds a sharp little dagger in one hand and reaches with the other.
Massielo Cirus
|
Massielo holds his hands so that Benedic can hand him the manacles.
What sort of check is needed to put them on him?
Tristan de Lion
I suggest everybody aid...lol.
