When the caravan arrives at the camp, they find it bustling with activity. Goblin engineers do their best to guide goblin workers as they build the decking and assemble the piers; the bridge appears simple, but sturdy, and is approximately half complete by this point.
See map on Slide 4.
As the wagons are unloaded, Muckmuck introduces Zig, leader of the bridge camp. While many of the goblins at the work camp are covered in dirt and sweat, Zig stands tall and straight among them. He pores over maps of the surrounding area before speaking.
“It is good to see you. They call me Zig. I’m glad my father asked you to come here to help. We have been building a very important bridge. But every night, the big cats attack our camp. We leave out meat for them and they saunter right past it. Instead, they seem bent on filling their bellies with goblin flesh. If we move camp across the river; they cross over it overnight. If we light fires around the camp to scare them away, the goblins workers burn themselves in the flames. It’s a lose-lose situation."
“Every few nights, the cats come back to hunt us. Everyone is terrified and that’s bad for business. With all this talk of some saber-toothed whatever coming for us in the night, we’re all too scared to finish our work. If someone doesn’t take these furballs out, I suspect the bridge isn’t ever gonna get built."
“These kitties aren’t natural. Whatever you need, you got it. I can give you workers to build fences. But fences alone aren’t going to be enough. Either the cats go, or this bridge is history. The only other answer is death.”
It's almost nighttime. You can describe what kind of preparations you want to make. You don't need to set up a formal watch - it's outside the scope of the scenario. If something happens in the middle of the night, everyone will be awake.

"Well we won' be leavin' til it's wit that bad cat's hide, no ya worry!" Tao reassures Zig "Also, we brought a message from you from yer uncle, but I forgot what it was..." Having also forgot if it was his uncle or his father or what.
Later
The somber mood here seems to negate the prospect of trying to put together a music circle, as Tao looks over at Manny. Speaking of which, she makes a mental note to make a slight alteration in which blessing to ask of Nethys for the morning's prayer, disposing of the Bless spell in favor of doubling down on the Magic Missile spell, which proved useful today.
If someone has an idea, Tao will be on hand to help it come together, else, she prepares to bed down and call it an early night, expecting to play guard during construction tomorrow. Or "mouse"...
Luckless Hamve
|
Hamve nods warmly in thanks to Tao. Still, his normal dourness returns quickly enough upon hearing more of the situation. He tilts his head in thought before inquiring some.
"Is there a place you could put up warning fires without your workers going for them? Or is that a silly, unrealistic question? Never mind. Also, if you have any hearsay on which way or where the cats have been coming from, that would be helpful. Perhaps then we could prioritize that side's defense or track them to a den."
Following any answers and hopefully a good meal, Hamve finds a somewhat secluded place to bunk. Best to be well-rested before whatever work tomorrow brings.

"Tell him he won't live to his 10th birthday if the next dog he sends me tastes as bad as the last one he sent! Ha, ha, ha!"
"Sup Zig!" Manny goes for a high five before adjusting and lowering his hand to a low five. "Yigrig says you need to send tastier dogs. The last wasn't too great. - Wait, you eat dogs? Hmm." Manny thinks, then shrugs.
The next time the goblins have a break (or before Manny falls asleep, whichever comes first, Manny arranges an impromptu concert. "Hey goblins, I know it's been tough. But you know, I heard about this goblin hero named Reta. She hated dogs, she hated horses, but she loved her tribe. She had a sweet shortbow and could hit a crow from one end of the swamp to the other."

"Oh Reta! You're a hero to goblinkind!"
"Oh Reta! Dogs can't put you in a bind!"
"When your arrow flies, its aim is true!"
"Oh Reta! Your deeds saved the Goblin crew!"
Manny gets pretty into the mind of a goblin, and what would make a hero. He avoids the parts about her allies slaughtering a town wedding, though. And he sings about her fighting a bunch of Gnolls instead of humans and halflings. Oh, and the dogs were totally rabid.

"Is there a place you could put up warning fires without your workers going for them?
"Well, maybe you longshanks can reach higher than goblins can reach. Fire still shiny and pretty, but if goblin can't reach, maybe work?"

After leaving the tent, Kappa walks the perimeter, looking for signs of tracks or cat scat.

How many goblins?
What is the layout of the camp?
Is it arranged circularly?

At random?
How much daylight is left?
Do the goblins sleep in tents?
Wagons?
Other structures?
How many?
Do they move?
What is the ground like?
What tools are available?
How many?...
1. The layout is on Slide 4. The goblins sleep in the tents, and there are about 2 goblins per tent, so 20-30 goblins in two disordered clustered. They can move, although if you want them all together, you can just move them all into Zig's house (northwest) or the big tent (northeast).
2. There are 4 wagons, plus a shed for animals. You can rearrange the wagons as you want.
3. The ground is a clay loam, equal parts sand, silt, and clay. It can be made into permanent structures, but not in the time frame you have. There are tools available so that you can dig holes in the time allotted, let's say 1 hole per character who wants it.
4. The sun is setting, and each of you have time to do one of the tasks above. The time frame is intentionally vague.

"I have a bad feelin' bout this, Kappa" Tao meekly stares down the kitty's throat...

Tao is still grabbed. She bangs on the leopard's snout ineffectively.
Kappa fires off a ray of frost, but in trying not to hit Tao, he misses the leopard. Note: you are still prone.
Hamve escapes and rolls his fire sphere over.

Deign to let go of Tao, it finally does, roaring with frustration. It then climbs up the fence, and jumps over.
