Jack Straw Dossier on the Brands

Idrassa's contact is a half-elf who introduces himself as Jack Shaw. He knows a lot about the gangs in Field Ward but won't say why or how he knows the information. Asked about the Brands, he tells Idrassa they're a small group of punks who control the west/north half of Burnt Inn Street and are based out of Flipcoin Alley, which they control most of.

Their main rivals are the Twelvedogs, a gang of shifters based out of Twelvedog Court. The shifters are more numerous, better organized, and more dangerous on an individual basis but they're only interested in protecting or promoting shifters so humans in that area have to fend for themselves.

The Brands are a human-only neighborhood gang who draw their numbers from the poor kids who don't have any other way to make money. Their main form of income is to shake down local merchants for protection money but they also sell drugs on a small scale. He doesn't know where they get their drugs from but since that Tarkanan controls the drug trade in Throneport, it's a good guess they're getting them from "House" Tarkanan.

Jack gives Idrassa a list of the leaders of the gang: leader Cleon, second-in-command Swan, the scout Fox, crew runners Raman, Snow, Cowboy, and Chise, and soldiers Vermin and Ajax. These are the leaders and toughest soldiers of the gang; Jack doesn't consider the rest (primarily younger corner boys and teen soldiers not worth much) any sort of threat.

Raman, Snow, Cowboy, and Chise each control crews that hold corners to sell drugs along Burnt Inn Street. Jack is able to give Idrassa the rundown on how that works:
1) someone approaches the spot and is usually spotted by a lookout before getting to the first corner boy
2) the buyer gives the corner boy their money and the kid signals up the street that they've paid and what they paid for- there's usually at least 1 other kid here hanging out and making sure the money is protected
3) the buyer heads up the street to a second person who's holding the drugs- usually a small amount of drugs are hidden near this second corner boy, so there's usually at least 1 or 2 older kids at this second location to protect the small stash
4) the corner stashes are restocked at least once a night from a central stash house in the middle of Flipcoin Alley
5) the Brands get resupplied about once a week but Jack hasn't been able to identify who is doing it or how the drugs get there

That's what I've got so far, let me know if you have questions or if there's more information you want. You rolled really well so you'd be able to get most any information you can think of.

So I'm thinking this is a terrible idea... but what if we blow up/burn down their central stash house, and pin it on someone like the Shifters?

Ash would not like that plan, ahahaha! O_o; But once he hears some more about their situation, he'd be more inclined to try diplomacy, especially now that they have access to people who aren't hot messes when they speak to others, lol.

There's merit in that, but remember they want to kill the member of the party with the highest charisma.

We should hash some of this out in character, but Idrassa's preference would still be to look for a way to gain some leverage before negotiating. "Leave the hospital alone and don't kill our party member," is not a big ask, but they're going to want something fore it.

Thanks Zander! I feel like one might have more trouble finding a perch on a little railing than a gull or albatross, though (especially without being noticed). ^_^; If both of those are too small, I'll have to rethink.

Sorry, I don't know how I missed this - apologies for the delay responding! It would be easiest for me if people would just post to the forum. I'll edit Idrassa's bit to reference what she learns from other party members and then make a real post to the forum to encompass it.

OK, here's the Field Ward gang territories map. I'd be perfectly happy for you to make up names and personalities for anybody I haven't already outlined (which is just the Brands and the Twelvedogs and the very basic sketch of the Forgotten).

Red is Brands territory (Flipcoin Alley)- leader Cleon, second-in-command Swan, the scout Fox, crew runners Raman, Snow, Cowboy, and Chise, and soldiers Vermin and Ajax.

Green is The Forgotten, the gang of Cyran refugees (Boltspring Alley), wear Cyran fashion, otherwise not described

Blue is The Twelvedogs, a gang of shifters who may be a little larger and more organized than these other gangs- they certainly have more adults in positions of authority than the Brands or the Forgotten (Twelvedog Court)- leader Blaze, bodyguards Cloud and Dapple, soldiers Rock and Oak

Orange is The Trolls (Trollwall Way), not described yet

Pink is The Shards (Firewine Alley), not yet described but from the name I'm thinking they're some kind of magipunk gang?

Grey is The Lamplighters (Soot Alley), not yet described but maybe they have some kind of tie to the Guild of Chandlers and Lamplighters/House Medani.

Those are all the nearby local gangs.

OK I'm regrouping. This scene is basically over; you've interviewed all the available witnesses, found all the clues, talked to the Guard detective, and reunited Martem with his mom.

Story-wise, the mod assumes you follow up on clues and investigate the fireball. So we could wrap up and Goggh could be like 'I almost died, could you check that out for me?'

However, the city is a sandbox and you could do just about anything.

Is following the main story what you want to do?

I have no problem following the main story, though truth be told, I'm more interested in our little side stories playing out. But that's just because I'm more invested in our little group than the wider world at the moment.

I would eventually like to figure out how to uphold Ash's promise to make life better for the shifters, or to drop the deal with the Twelvedogs without getting lynched, since it turned out to be completely unnecessary and probably counterproductive. Also interested to see how things go with Idrassa and his new The Divine Has Given Me Purpose shenanigans. Also still interested in the mystery kid who talks to cats and apparently has contacts (or patrons?) in low places?

Maybe the last one is connected to the main plot, I dunno. Anyway, let's go investigate the fireball? Or does anyone else have better threads to pull?

Nah I'm game to investigate the fireball, I think we've got good side plots going, but something larger would help to galvanize the group in a direction.

Zander is always curious, which means he's likely to go haring off on side quests at any point (though he can be kept "on target" by being reminded (as JV often does) that it's tactically unsound to scatter troops/attention to widely).

So I'm game for investigating the fireball, while also open to whatever else happens.

Zander also knows he has a long life ahead of him (presuming he survives).
