"Your inquiry was rather insightful." Therseis chimes in, offering a more polite response to D'vost. "Our bodies are made of numerous polyps genetically that excrete the material that forms our exoskeletons, which reshape themselves into organs including our external dermal layer. We can exert control over these excretions, changing and reshaping our appearance over time."

Therseis, apparently unsure if their explanation was satisfactory, noes further, "The individual polyps gradually die, but they are then replaced by others, allowing us them to slowly reshape our bodies to adapt."

"The flying cities were home to copaxis who ruled before the Gap." notes Therseis. The copaxi pauses for a moment as if considering what words to say next.

"We only recently developed technology that would allow them to explore the gravitationally unstable cities, and Tabantria is the only one they have discovered that is intact and upright enough to visit." says Gnaucara filling the silence.

"The ancient magic that lifted the cities from the surface was the same magic that led to the downfall of their inhabitants--a group of divergent copaxis." interjects Therseis. "They were punished by divine intervention for becoming over-reliant on magic."

Shirren listens to the information provided and interested asks:

"This material that forms your exoskeletons do it only exists within copaxis? Or do other living beings have a similar structure? Or maybe there is that material in soil or water? "

Asks D'vost wondering if the mass responsible for gravity anomalies is a living being or a very dense deposit of some mineral.

D'vost shakes his head wondering how on earth he ended with such thoughts, he is a soldier and a tracker what does he knows about alien life forms.

I honestly should have taken a PC with more knowledge, I don't feel comfortable asking all those questions as D'vost.

D'vost wrote:

"The composition of our exoskeletons bears some resemblance to other living and extinct organisms on our planet." Bryanisis shyly responds from the corner. "Our exoskeletons evolved from an ancient, unintelligent organism called copi, which once covered much of our planet and deposits of which we now mine as it is useful in various forms of construction. Other life-forms on our world are believed to have, similarly, evolved from copi, though none have displaced an intelligence similar to our own."

"Our modern society has advanced rather significantly." interjects Therseis. "Our rapid development of new technologies
and unified civilization has become a model, that we believe others could benefit from considerably."

"Our planet has suffered a bit due to the rapid industrialization." Bryanisis concedes.

"But, sustainability and conservation are top priorities for our current research efforts." Therseis again interjects. "Research with which we are pleased to have you involved. Learning copaxi history, cataloging rare flora and fauna, and recording any potential threats are all part of the mission of our team. Indeed, I urge you to catalog any strange or unique findings that may aid us and to collect anything interesting that you may find during your time on our world."

The copaxi pauses, thoughtfully, then adds, "We will, of course, reward you with credits for making these areas of research safe to explore."

"Gravitational anomalies?" Therseis repeats quickly in response. "Such have caused difficulties on our planet in the past. They can interfere with technology. As I mentioned earlier, we only recently developed technology that would allow us to overcome the gravitational instability around this city. And, we also eager to use our technology to spread to the stars."

Rattus Solo wrote:
Rattus chimes in. "Where can a guy get a drink around here?"

"A substantial portion of our planet is covered in water. Would that suffice as a beverage?" asks Panacula. "We understand that water is a significant portion of the biological composition of many citizens of the Pact Worlds, is it not?"

Feel free to ask any additional questions, but in the interest of moving us along.

"As we trust you have experienced, we will do our best to provide you with whatever information we are able to regarding our colonies and our world." notes Therseis. "However, we do not intend to interfere with your work here regarding the petition for protectorate status. Indeed, we are under orders to let you Starfinders make your own determination, without interference."

Before heading into the city to begin your explorations, the party has an opportunity to influence Therseis, an agent of the local government. Doing so requires a successful Diplomacy check. The shy Bryanisis responds only with a blank expression. Indeed, their look is quite bear barren.

"We are pleased to provide you with what information we have already obtained." replies Therseis.

The copaxi produces a basic map of the city.
Also now up on Slides.

"This map indicates which areas our team has already explored and that are know to be safe." Therseis continues. "There are, however, four specific locations that have yet to be adequately explored due to...hazardous conditions and threats. Nevetheless, we suspect that these areas may contain valuable information that, for the time being, remains bear buried."

"Bryanisis," Therseis says to the shy copaxi. "Please elaborate."

Bryanisis steps hesitantly from her space in the corner and begins to speak, rather slowly and quietly as Therseis momentarily steps out of the briefing room.

Perception (DC 26):
You notice that Therseis briefly fiddles with a handheld comm unit out of sight of the other copaxis.

"Our research team discovered a gaping hole excavated in an
otherwise mundane residential neighborhood."
explains Bryanisis. "We detected the presence of creatures within the tunnels and, therefore, have yet to explore further. However, the readings we received on our sensors indicated the presence of more than one, likely dangerous, presence."

Therseis returns as Bryanisis concludes, adding, "You see, then, why we are pleased to have highly-trained operatives, such as your Society's agents, to aid in our efforts."

Eleazar Amasa wrote:
"I am sorry that my...presence...seems to slightly scare you."

"No need to apologize." Therseis says. "But, please know that any discomfort on our part is not due to any distrust in you. However, we have encountered, what we believed to be, undead among the untended gardens of one of Tabantria's former residential districts. Another hazard, we fear, that we would appreciate you addressing."

"In addition to these two residential areas that Bryanisis and I have mentioned, there are two other areas of concern." Therseis continues. "A group of scavengers, criminals really, have made their way to this ruined city, doubtlessly seeking to pillage valuable artifacts and antiquities for their own, personal wealth. They have set up a camp around an old observation tower. We have been unable to access this area without provoking an armed response."

"The fourth area of concern is most unusual." notes the copaxi. "We have explored much of the city's abandoned university. Yet, when we attempted to explore the campus' massive open-roofed arena, unbearable headaches forced us to turn back. We do not know the cause of these headaches, but perhaps you can provide us with an answer to this mystery."

Eleazar Amasa wrote:
"If your exoskeleton is multiple smaller organisms, do you immerse yourself in water with minerals and proteins?"

"Each of our polyps includes a set of five feeding tentacles about 2 inches long suitable for filter feeding or catching extremely small prey." Therseis explains. "But do not be concerned, for they pose little threat to larger targets beyond painful scratches--not that we would ever attempt to eat you, of course. The polyps’ bodies extend beneath the exoskeleton, intertwining with additional polyps to create sheets of muscle fiber and even transform into specialized tissues for processing information, sensing our surrounding, storing nutrients, eliminating toxins, and reproducing. Individual polyps die and are replaced by new individuals, which in turn can grow to address our needs."

Devil We Know | Ashes of Discovery (Hellknights) | Ashes of Discovery (Desna)

"In addition to those four troublesome areas that have been mentioned, we also encourage you to explore other parts of the city where the work of our research team has been more fruitful, as doing so should provide you with more information about our culture and its history." Therseis notes. "Such areas include the Tabantria Academy, city market, and the city's port."

"We recognize that you Starfinders may not wish anyone to meddle or interfere, but we do request that we either be permitted to accompany you in person on your investigation or that you please communicate your findings with us after investigating each area in the city." Therseis suggests. "Our comm units have been configured to be compatible with Pact Worlds comm units as our copaxi linguists have programmed prototype translation software for both Common and Copaxi."

"For, as you may, find," they warn, "Formal versions of written Copaxi include olfactory cues and punctuation shellacked onto the writing surface, but such writing in Tabantria have faded over time, and our software doesn’t include scent diagnosis. Accordingly, even a native speaker may likely struggle to translate some inscriptions that you may encounter."

The prototype translation software reduces the Culture DCs to translate text by 10 and allows a PC to attempt such checks untrained.

"Regardless of whether you allow us to accompany you, you are welcome to return to our camp here and converse with the members of the research team." Therseis noes. "You may stay and speak with us whenever you would like. We have made arrangements to provide you with accommodations, which we trust you will find suitably comfortable should you desire a space in which to rest."

LOTS of text, I realize (and a Perception check to make above). So, in summary, Therseis has their team have identified the following places for investigation, the latter four of which have not been thoroughly explored by the research team for the reasons indicated in parentheses:

1. Market
2. Tabantrica Academy
3. Transport Station
4. Residential Gardens (undead)
5. Residential Area With Hole (creatures)
6. Observation Tower (scavengers)
7. Campus Arena (headaches)

Once there are two votes for a particular place, I will move the party forward to that location.

Reading Oddman's text message, he'll nod in thanks to the kasatha for his sharp eyes, then look to Therseis and the comm unit in question. "Is everything alright, friend? I'm no mechanic, but I've got a decent set of paws for working on electronics and such."

I'm cool with 4 also if others are, and to keep us moving! (As a reminder, Dov can make enemies vulnerable to one energy type. So far fire seems to be the one folks have mentioned. I am fine with 4. I was thinking of first exploring non-hostile areas as D'vost is considering copaxis to turn their backs on them if they discover something nasty. But we can handle that if it happens.

Heading into the center of the ruined city of Tabantria with Therseis keeping a good distance, as suggested, you make your way to what must have once been some of the pristine public parks and gardens of the high-end residential district of the floating city.

Weeds and ugly vines extend along these silent stone pathways. Crumbling statuary and collapsed walls, riddled with bullet holes and scorch marks, stand testament to a great conflict long ago. Dented helmets and battered, rusted vehicles stand in stark contrast to their stone surroundings. Hundreds of grave markers and monuments dot the landscape, each covered in old inscriptions that the years have worn to the point of illegibility.

Ahead of you are three, pale figures. Each is humanoid in shape, but composed of a rock-like substance resembling bleached coral. Two (blue & yellow) carry spears within their appendages while a third (red) cradles a rifle. The three move methodically through the area as if locked in an eternal patrol through the demolished park.

Melee(tactical spear): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Damage(P): 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

The tip of the spear gets caught in the fence.

Not exactly sure where you mean, but I would consider anything with a grave marker, column, or similar stone feature within it to be difficult terrain.

D'vost is surprised with the shot aimed at him but is glad that it missed. He looks at the development of the situation and follows the group trying to flank the enemies. It is getting crowded there, but it doesn't bother D'vost. When attacking with their hive shirrens were used to close proximity of allies.

The fence provides cover and can be scaled with a successful DC 15 Athletics check.

The disk and laser shot each strike the fence.

The bleached undead with the rifle continues to burn and attempts to shoot at the creature in front of it.

I am ruling that since there is only the low wall between red and Mierwag that there is no cover between them. Thus, the ranged attack provokes.

Ranged (hunting rifle) v Mierwag: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

Oh yeah, I forgot about that roll. I will apply the first roll as Mierwag's AoO and the second roll as attack this turn.

As the bleached undead (red) firest, the formian bashes it good, but does not have enough momentum going to break off any of the exoskeleton on a second strike.

Another undead (yellow) drops its spear and mindlessly claws repeatedly at the nearest Starfinder.

"Doc, <click> it would be better<click> to step away.<click> Eleazar looks like he wants to explode<click>."

Next round supernova would reach two enemies and us two so I will step away this round to give Eleazar more options next round.

D'vost steps away and reaches for his laser, it is a bit piece of weapon that is hard even to hold with one hand not even saying about aiming it. He turns it on and smiles as he hears the nice humming. Aiming at the burning enemy he slowly pulls the trigger.

Seeing the same kind of light begin to exhibit a corona from the edges of Eleazar's skin, Dov quickly adjusts his microlab and weapon. "I concur with your astute assessment of the tactical situation and if you'll just bear with me for one more shot..."

Dov loads up a genetics (fire) inhibitor biohack and takes a shot at Yellow!
