Lux is visibly impressed with the smooth way in which Nikebei seems to dissolve the situation. She's of a mind to give Niklaas a stern warning about keeping his mind shut like Jaldan asked them, but then thinks better of it. He's probably forgotten about the incident already by the time we get back. And me asking him to keep quiet seems all the more reason for him not to do so.

She puts her attention back to the centaur, dropping to her haunches to comfort the coyote cub that's been hiding behind her legs, somewhat intimidated by the sight of a centaur. "I'm just glad we got here when we did, and managed to help you get your things back. I'm very interested in the natural world, and I think Armagile is as well." She points to the pale-skinned half-human in their group. "We're very interested to hear what'd wrong what we can do to help. It's about fixing something that went wrong three months ago?"

"Well, these... squirrel creatures, was it? I'm sure I have encountered similar on my travels. Could we perhaps examine a specimen, if you happen to have one? Oh, I'm getting ahead of myself- we don't even know if that is why we were brought here!" Fester will pull out a gloved hand and offer a handshake. "I am Sir Festering Bergamot, renowned crusader and hero of the Battle of Undarin, though you may call me Fester if you are so inclined. The pleasure is mine. Now, on the matter of our business, on what account have we been called to this quaint settlement?" Fester will offer a crooked smile at the end of his introduction, as he moves to try and hide Niklaas behind his equally-thin body.

The centaur ushers you to walk towards the forest before beginning to speak as the Pathfinders follow.

"So, here's the story. Over the last few months, something really really really weird has happened to the local forest spirits. They've always been a little cranky, but now they've gone from 'Auntie Kaana before she's had her morning coffee' to 'We will bake bread from your bones'. They're not talking to the druids or the shamans, and when Cenenviel tried to do a big ritual to ask them what's wrong, a tree animated and tried to kill him.

"So, that's s***ty, but worse the spirits have started making bodies for themselves. You all know what Leshys are, right? Well, normally only druids can make one. They grow a little plant or mushroom body, ask a spirit to enter, and poof, ya got a leshy. Except now the spirits are making their OWN bodies! And they're really, really, really f***** up. AND VIOLENT! I had to smash something that looked like a dead skunk crossed with a thorn-bush when it tried to eat my face last night. No joke.

"These things have been attacking people, starting fires, and trying to burn down the forest. I don't think anyone's gotten killed yet, but it's probably going to happen sooner rather than later.

"Anyway, that's what Cenenviel, Kaana, and your Urwal are trying to figure out now at the Redpine camp. They seem to think you can help. So, uhh, get your a** in gear and let's get going!"

Before she forgets, she turns around and hands you the bag she was trying to obtain earlier. "Oh, uhh, all of this is for you."

Contents of the bag:

5 gp in coins, a lesser cheetah's elixir, and an owlbear claw.

Nikebei talks frivolously through the journey with the centaur, but listens intently as Lux and Armagile talk to gain information about Cenenviel and Kaana, that might be useful. Though as they go deeper into the forest, towards Redpine he relaxes more with his companions and remembers his time spent in the woods as a child. He looks around at the trees, the green leaves and the songs of various birds that trill in and out of view. Idyllic, "Strange to think this is corrupted by some evil, I hope when it comes to it .... oh .... you know... "

Lux listens intently and tries to filter through the colourful language of the teen-aged centaur. Oh dear, that's a match made in Hell, she thinks of the prospect of Jaldan and Niklaas having an extended conversation.

She tries to summarize what she understood from Jaldan's briefing. Once she gets talking, she finds that her questions are hard to stop. "So, the spirits have turned against the people, and even against the forest itself. Did this start all of a sudden, or gradually over the past months? Was there a certain trigger that might have happened right around when it started? Urwal thought cosmology might have been an influence?"

Turning to more practical matters, she focuses on the names Jaldan mentioned. "Who are Cenenviel and Kaana? And where is Redpine Camp? Will you join us on the way there, or give us directions?" She looks to be done talking, but there's one last questions. "If we run into those spirits, or their own-made bodies, how would we deal with them? Anything in particular we should know?" She takes a deep breath. "Sorry for all the questions. That was really the last of them. I think..."

Armagile wrote:
Who is Cenenviel?

"He's an elven druid who watches over the forest nearby. Nice old guy, lives in the woods and has a pet wolverine named Berry-Eater. It's really cute. He's been teaching me a little magic, so I can be a great shaman later."

Lux wrote:
Did this start all of a sudden...

"It's progressed through the last several months. They went from happy little forest spirits to creepy, angry, screwed-up-looking little buggers."

Lux wrote:
Was there a trigger?

"Urwal would know more, but I'm not sure. What I do know is that they get angry whenever they saw him. Think he may have come up with why, too!"

Unfortunately, for the remainder of Lux's questions, it becomes apparent that the Pathfinders are talking to somebody who wasn't fully debriefed on the situation. No important information is gathered.

She then begins to lead the Pathfinders to Redpine camp. The bruorsivi make it an odd sort of forest, largely indistinguishable from a typical evergreen wood except for the fact that everything is in shades of red. The branches overhead are crimson, and scarlet needles crunch underfoot. Jaldan is an enthusiastic traveling companion, spending the trip peppering the Pathfiners with questions about the world outside the forest. For her, the trip to Urwal's camp is the equivalent of a summer stroll in the park, so while she keeps an eye on the forest out of habit, she's clearly not expecting trouble. Problem is, trouble awaits.

A band of absolutely bizarre creatures craws from the forest, chirping and hooting as they go. A moss-covered human skull scuttles along six branches like a spider. A dead raccoon slinks along on a fungal mat that bleeds sap from a hundred crimson 'eyes'. A twisted mass of weeds topped with pulsing flowers staggers forward, leaving trails of burning sap.

Anybody speak abyssal?:
The creatures seem to shout "Over there!" over and over again.

Lux is eager to speak to another young nature-enthusiast like Jaldan, and she's more than happy to share some of her experiences from the Sarkoris Scar and what she learned there. Meanwhile, she takes in all the splendor of the crimson forest around her, until bizarre set of creatures distubs their trail.

Her surprise very quickly makes way for curiosity. She's aware that the creatures - entities (?) - pose a threat, otherwise she would have run at them straight away to get a closer look. "Oh, my... They're under some kind of demonic influence?"

Lux would have been investigating, with Nature. Like Fester, she has the 'Demon Slayer' background and speaks Abyssal.

Hell's Vengeance - Slides

Fester is Investigating with Nature.
Niklaas, Lux, and Nikebei are doing the same.
Armagile is scouting.

(As an aside, Niklaas and Fester, please check the discussion.)

As I cannot see Niklaas's Nature check, we'll just hope everybody else got decent.

GM Screen. No peeking:

Fester nature: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Niklaas and Fester draw blanks on the first type of Leshy.

Lux and Nikebei believe the creature to be a type of Hogweed Leshy. They're aware that this type of leshy is known for its ability to cause a burst of choking plants to sprout around themself. The leshy's square and all adjacent squares become difficult terrain, but it doesn't impede leshys. They also leave burning sap on you when they deal critical damage.

---

Everyone (except probably Niklaas) is sure that the other creatures are Plum Leshys. These Leshys are known for their ability to throw rotten fruit from their bodies, dealing damage and attempting to sicken the target.

Lux is also quite sure that at least the Plum Leshy is corrupted in such a way that killing the leshy will release a burst of toxic natural energy. Each living non-plant creature within 30 feet of the Leshy must make a Basic Fortitude save against poison damage.

---

As the tiny monsters approach, something odd happens. One dreadful creature, a rotten gourd walking on three rabbit feet, lunges toward jaldan, only to trip and smash itself against an upraised root. Some kind of hot sap splashes around it, and in seconds the bruorsivi needles catch light and begin to burn.

"Spirits of woe and weal!" Jaldan swears, watching in horrified fascination. "They're going to set the whole forest aflame!"

Assuming that squares that are less than 50% black are able to be stood in; I hate this map. Also, I don't know if we are assumed to have our weapons out, if not, replace Fester's attack with a Ready action for his Curve Blade.

Fester, willing to showcase the bravery he "earned" in the Worldwound aftermath, charges forward to the nearest Leshy, throwing a false punch before going in for an attack.

Stride 30', Feint, Attack.

Feint, Deception vs Perception DC on Pink, see Scoundrel Racket for modified results of the Feint: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

12 is probably a failure unless these things are near-blind, so no sneak attack presumeably.

Raising an eyebrow as the one gourd monster burst into flames, Niklaas drew his blade. “Whelp… looks like things ‘er really startin’ ta heat up!”

(Depending on whether we have our weapons drawn or not, Niklaas will do one of two things. If weapons are drawn, then Niklaas will double move to flank with Fester, then take a swing at the gourd leshy that’s already damaged. If weapons are not drawn, then Niklaas will move up 35 ft towards the leshies, draw his rapier and buckler, then raise his shield.)

(If Niklaas can attack…, he’ll race up behind the leshy, shout, “Doofussaywhat?! then swing at his flanked opponent and whatever equates to a leshy’s vitals. Attack with Shirley: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 132d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 2) + 4 = 11)

"Peace!" Lux cries out when she sees how easily the forest catches flame. She tries to relay most of what she understands of the leshies. "Err... That one creates vines that makes it difficult to move. And I think those ones might explode with toxic spores when you strike them hard enough!"

Lux weighs her options. The nearest Plum Leshy seems just too far away for her to strike it with a tanglefoot spell. Instead, she opts for preparing for a longer conflict. "Ozul, heel," she commands her coyote to follow. Shen then moves closer to the leshies with Ozul following closely behind.

Command an animal, Stride twice. Ozul will follow.

I'll allow you to have your weapons out. The forest is known to have troubles at this point.

Also, I missed the hazard's initiative in the above post. Knew something seemed off. It went between Lux and Fester, and I doubt it would really change their turns so I'm going to rule it has having gone at the right time.

Lux strides forward with her animal companion following.

Jaldan races over to the forest fire. She draws one of the many waterskins from her backpack and sputters out one of the squares. Too bad the fire spreads to two more.

Fester moves first, trying to feint the creature and failing. But, the curve blade still finds its mark.

Niklaas moves behind the Leshy, and attempts to stab it, but he finds its head surprisingly hollow as the rapier goes straight through a hole in its skull. [ooc]Just barely missed.

---

The two plum Leshys go first. Green throws some kind of rotten plums from its strange branching appendages.

AC 19: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
AC 19: 1d20 + 6 - 5 ⇒ (10) + 6 - 5 = 11

Both go wide, a plop against the floor in a pile of indistinguishable mush.

The leshy then meanders a bit further from the action.

The purple leshy launches his plums at Lux.

AC 16 Lux: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
AC 16 Lux: 1d20 + 6 - 5 ⇒ (2) + 6 - 5 = 3

The similarly plot ineffectively.

The surrounded hogweed leshy (pink) reaches it's feet roots into the ground, causing shoking plants to sprout out from around. The pink square is now difficult terrain for non-Leshys. It will then attack Fester.

AC 16 Fester: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9

The dice roller is very unhappy with me right now.

The final hogweed leshy (blue) marches forward to flank Niklaas and attacks twice.

Oh. Oh. Alright. Armagile, be sure to point out how many of your actions you use in your posts, then. I didn't realize it took all 3 actions to get there. My bad

The fire spreads. I'm going to do it randomly, though technically I get to choose. I choose random.

FIRE!: 2d18 ⇒ (13, 2) = 15

Well. The dice have spoken.

Since Nikebei ended his turn adjacent to the flames without being prepared for them like Jaldan, he actually took some damage last turn.

As Nikebei rushes to the fire, it quickly spreads right to where he stepped.

A basic DC 15 reflex save (two individually for the next two damage rolls) is allowed for the damage. Basic saves have the following effects: Crit success - no damage; Success - half damage; failure - full damage; critical failure - double damage)

End turn adjacent to fire damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
The dice say the fire spreads to your square damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5

The other fire spreads opposite Jaldan.

Fester goes to attack the Leshy, but meets the same fate as Niklaas, his first shot going straight into the strange creature's eye socket, avoiding any actually fleshy part of the creature. The other two miss while Fester looks on in mild confusion.

The creature then moves out of the tangling vines, moving towards Nikebei, but stopping at the end of the difficult terain.

The blue leshy quickly runs towards his friend and brambles up the area there as well. Now blue and pink are difficult terrain for non-leshys.

Lux feels like retching, but the situation is too dire to waste any time. She points at the closest Hogweed Leshy and sicks Ozul on it. "Go, attack!" She herself joins up with Armagile to keep the spreading fire under control. She tries not to retch from the rotting plum, grabs her cloak and uses it to smother the flames.

Command an animal, move, use Survival to douse some flames. If Armagile succeeded in dousing the square I'm next to, Lux had enough movement left over to step one square further and douse the other one.

Poison damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Lux, Nikebei, and Fester take full. OH NO! That dropped Fester!

Ozul, Niklaas, and Armagile's animal companion take half.

Armagile takes none.

If that damage would have changed your turns, I will allow you to take a different one. Please post whether you're keeping your turn or changing it based on new events. I really dropped the ball on this one. Fester, if somebody changes their turn to revive you, you get a turn. Lux sees the effect of her and Ozul killing the plum leshy and curses. "Oh, peace!" Seeing Fester go down, she doesn't worry about her own discomfort. Rather, she hustles over to the elf, pulls the healing potion from her belt and pours it in his mouth. Urwal knew what he was doing when he packed one of these for me...

Ozul is left retching in a vain attempt to get rid of the rotten plum.

Fester sees black. All he can hear is distorted noise. Slowly, his eyes begin to see the world in gray-orange, before slowly realizing the distorted noises are the sounds of explosions and bombs. What in asmodeus's name... Fester tries to roll over before realizing he can't, resigning himself to his limp position. His body retches. What was I doing before this? Something about plants? Its always damned plants... first it was the trees... then it was the stick construct... now these. I need to find a better faction, Verdant Wheel is for suicidal nutjobs...

His reverie over, Fester suddenly realizes he can feel his toes. Looking up, he sees Lux, and grumbles out a garbled "...thanks" before wiping the residue from his mouth, pulling out his shortbow, and booking it away from the other leshies.

Everybody threatens with their unarmed strike, now. I'll allow Niklaas to stand in that square, too.

I'm going to assume that "almost knocking her off her feat" was a bit of poetic description without in-game effect. Indeed, healing Fester last turn might have made more sense for Nikebei, but healing Lux was a good thing as it turned out. I'm going to post assuming I'm at -10, sickened, and not prone or anything.

Lux, still reeling from the blow to her face, shakes her head to clear some of the confusion. "Thanks for the well-timed heal, Nik. You can't see in the future, or can you?"

She doesn't dare put herself into danger so soon again, but she knows that Ozul will want to protect her anyway. She does what she can to bolster her coyote companion before sending him in. She casts a healing spell on Ozul, then sends him to attack the nearest target.

Casting the focus spell 'Heal animal' on Ozul for 2 actions, healing 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 hit points. Last action is Command an animal. Ozul strides forward and attacks blue.

Jaw attack vs. blue: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (3) + 6 - 1 = 8
piercing damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
