When Packet hears there's a ghoul in the wall, he nearly spits out his pipe!

"Get away from that thing. Don't talk to it! Let's hurry up and get out of here."

Pip: if you have any particular questions on this creature with the critical success please let me know. Ghouls can also disease and have claws and bite attacks. They are evil creatures.

Pip wrote:
She points at the words, 'Candren's Wish.' "Marcon, what has brought you back to us?"

Marcon clutches the card in a claw. When pip asks about the writing on the walls, he crumples it. His harsh voice rises. MINE! MY SECRET!

He steps forward. What... brought me back? Vengeance. Vengeance brought me back. He licks his lips. Canst thou… imagine… the rage I feel? Chained here, forgotten, left to die of thirst alone in the dark? My heart beats not, yet it burns for vengeance…! You want my secret? I give you the secret, yes… I give… but only in bargain. Not for free. No, no.

He gently pats the crushed card flat again as he continues. I know… much. And greatly doth a family in Absalom fear my secret. Guide me to the surface and I will share my secret. Yes. I will share. But not before! No! But after, yes. When I am free, yes. Perhaps then I will know peace…

More about Macron's story and the Candrens
Pip, Packet, and Shwurk suspect that the undead’s information could be quite damaging to one person in particular: Goodman Hugen of House Candren, a member of the Grand Council of Absalom and First Harbormaster.

Packet has also heard that Hugen has secret sympathies for equality and strong ties to Andoran. If this secret is revealed, and if it damages the reputation of Goodman Hugen it may also hurt his relationships with others who are fighting for equality and freedom.

More about Revenge
Lirabelle, Ogren, and Gurmire think that allowing Marcon to reveal his secret to the world will allow his spirit to finally pass on to the Boneyard.

Back to the scene!

The ghoul lurches forward. Will… thou… help me?

How did I get here? Do I know? It has been so long. I remember… counting coins… then… dragged down to the dark screaming… the others bricking me up, laughing… the chains made my wrists bleed… the long hunger. The hunger hurt so much!

This place was… was called a name. It had a name, it did. What was it? What was the name it had? The Tombs of the Living, yes, that is what this place was named. A name for where people who knew secrets were chained… walled up… left to die of thirst or starve as they licked sewage off the floor. Some ate the flesh of their friends. We heard each other… in the other chambers… But none above heard us… none came to save us. I died. I woke. Floated in the black waters until he earth shook…

The ghoul licks his lips and clutches his belly. I still hunger. So much! But revenge, it is more important than hunger, yes?

Pip sinks to the floor, head in her hands. "There's two kinds of suffering here. There is the future suffering of those who fight for freedom and liberty in Andoran, that Goodman Hugen could help. But there is also the suffering of this creature whose story pierces my soul."

Then suddenly, she rises to her feet, clenching her fists in rage. "Is Goodman Hugen responsible for the atrocities of his ancestors? Perhaps not. But... I am a lawyer. I am dedicated to helping people who need to bring truths to light, and to those who seek justice. Marcon's plight is not something that I can ignore."

"Do you know what most people's reaction is to an uncomfortable truth? We cover it up!" Pip is visibly shaking. "If we forget these outrages, if we do not learn from them, we are doomed to repeat them!"

Pip goes over to take Lirabelle's hand. "I stand with Lirabelle. We bring this creature peace and justice. We share the secret of what happened here." Then she thinks for a moment, and says, "If we want to mitigate the suffering, we share it with Goodman Hugen first, and let him be the one to be the whistleblower on his family's past. If he is seen as a truth-teller, it will help inoculate his message."

Shwurk hates moral questions. They are always so complicated and if you say the wrong thing, people yell at you, even if you don’t really understand. She massages her scalp while she wracks her brain for an answer on what to do. ”Shwurk thinks undead are bad...but also slavery bad...but also why call yourself ‘Goodman’ unless you are actually ‘Badman?’ Shwurk’s favorite singer, Freddie Aballon from da band King, calls herself Ms. Bad Girl, and she’s a Good Girl. So dat means Goodman is Badman. And people should know Badman is Badman, not Goodman. Sooooo...dat means we help ghoul? I think? Maybe?”

Ogren nods at everyone's words. "Secrets of one's grandparents or great grandparents are not our secrets. Anyone who seeks to hurt Goodman 'cause his grandparents were badmen should think again. Goblins should help him in his cause, 'cause if they think his grandparents were badmen and so he's a badman then they must think the same of us too! Shwurk, what did your grandparents do? Did they sell things too? Gurmire, how about you? Were your great-grandparents 'good' goblins as we think they are now? You don't know how many people I had to show time and time again at home that I wasn't going to kill them or hurt them or burn their things, because of what some goblin did to them in the past, did two hundred years ago. Yes the secret should be told, but I don't think it should bother 'Who-gent' now!"

Now if only he had a diplomacy modifier to back that up! Also once we get closer to the surface, Ogren is definitely going to petition King Zusgut to support the Goodman if possible.

Packet tips back his hat so he can see the party clearly.

"We found a ghoul in a hole in a wall. He told us something," Packet shrugs. "If I believed every ghoul in every hole in every wall, where would I be? Probably in the belly of a ghoul by now."

"What I'm saying is, we've only heard one side of his story, and we don't know if we can trust this ghoul for anything. We don't have enough information to properly make a decision, but I can tell we're making it anyway, and I'm out voted. You have spent 30 more minutes down here so far. It took you 10 to cross the lake. So, 80 minutes or 1.33 hours.

Freeing Macron:

It will take 30 minutes of work to make a space large enough for a medium-sized creature such as the Ghoul to pass; this can be shortened to 15 minutes with proper tools. A Crafting check might cut the time in half as well. If you'd like to make a check please do so; if you have a useful tool, please let me know!

Remind me to clean this carefully when we get back to the grand lodge.” he says as he pours the lake water out.

Once the cracks have nice puddles of water seeping out of them, he asks everyone to stand back a little bit. Then he releases one of his Frost Bombs on the wall to freeze the water.

Shwurk beat the crafting DC so keep your hero point, Gurmire. Only one of you needs to pass the check. The frost vial seems like an appropriate tool as well and will cut the time in half again. Orgren — see OOC if you haven't.

No… the ghoul smacks his lips as he looks over all the delicious goblins before him. His hands tremble. No. I control that… hunger… for now. Discipline I have. Discipline, yes. Hunger is as nothing unto me now. Its claws have lost their grip… This I swear: no harm to the bodies of the living will I eat… So long as I see justice done. Then… hunger's end. Peace. Forever.

Ogren watches the ghoul carefully, not quite sure what to think of his actions and looks. This is unusual, but Marcon is trying to keep himself in control and, well, he seems like he was? is? a good person. As Marcon is reigning himself in and not salivating directly over Ogren, he gives a smile and pats the man on the leg. "Stay strong! You can do this! I believe in you. Let's get your secret out to the whole world and then you can get some rest, and maybe have a pigeon or four before you go to sleep! ... wait how do you feel about skinned crocodiles?"

The little goblin keeps the ghoul close, wanting to make him feel comforted if it helps, but mostly interested in the large undead. As they move onto the big room he starts visibly bouncing in his armor in excitement. "Marcon, we're going into the BIG ROOM! I'm excited, aren't you? Someone as amazing as you was in the small rooms; there must be something astounding in the BIG ROOM!"
I wanted to link a rubber hose animation example of Ogren's bouncing but finding one at work is probably not going to be easy

You move on to the last area and find yourselves before the steps to a wider, shadow-filled chamber. Shwurk practices her greebling her sales pitch while Macron mumbles to himself.

Out of the gloom emerges a wide gallery. It's lined with a colorful mural depicting a figure who's performing some sort of magical ritual over an expanse of ocean. His arms raised, the figure beckons to something massive and dark rising from beneath the waves.

Ahead, a second set of stairs rises to another chamber. There's a shadowy, twenty-foot statue of some sort looming above the room, but it looks strange… almost like a fish with four tentacles. It's too difficult to make out the details from here, and you're not sure you want to see more. That feeling of dread crescendoes.

Something horrible grabs your attention before you can focus on further details: four figures, groaning, lurch down the steps! Macron flinches backward.

These ones… like Macron… once… prisoners, they were. Now know naught but hunger… Destroy! Quick! Or my……… sssssecret dies! Dies with you!

Indeed, these rotting corpses look far less friendly than your ghoul companion… the large ones look like they have reach.

Orgren follows up on his existential question about numbers with a mace to the face. Braaaiinnns 2 at -48 HP.

Adding to Orgren's quandary about the true nature of zombie brutes, one of them suddenly and mysteriously shambles away! Maybe he just ate a large meal and needs to take a nap somewhere. GM realized there should only be 1 Brute in this adjustment :D; Lirabelle took 0 damage.
