It has been three days since you left Elidir, climbing into the back of one of Bort Bargith’s wagons bound for the faraway Andoran capital of Almas. The smiling caravan master cut your travel cost to only a handful of coppers, so long as you promised to protect the wagons should any trouble arise. Fortunately, your journey through the hinterlands of Isger has been quiet, even if the ride itself has been far from comfortable.

(Everyone except Pepper is travelling with the caravan.)

As you broke camp this morning, Bort announced "I know you're tired of sleeping rough, but we should be arriving by nightfall to a more lavish meal, no offense Cooky", the caravan master smiles placidly at the elderly elven cook. "You can look forward to a comfortable bed tonight at Etran's Folly, is all I'm saying. After that, it's another few days trip to Falcon's Hollow." The caravan’s teamsters share a chuckle between them, trading knowing glances and subtle nods at the mention of Etran's Folly. Soon enough you are on the road again, the wagon bouncing and creaking along the uneven trail.

Bort's caravan is six wagons affair. You've gotten used to calling the final covered wagon home, even if its cramped with four of you sleeping inside it and another outside with the cook, an older elf who goes by the name of Cooky or Cocky as some of the other teamsters call him. The poor elf has only one ear and is constantly tilting his head to one side to compensate. Cooky has a hard time hearing most folk, although many of the others in the caravan think he can hear just fine and chooses to ignore others when they irritate him.

(Please feel free to introduce your characters, their appearance and RP freely for a bit. You'll also get to know some of the other caravan members shortly.)

The goblin is quiet and reserved, particularly for a goblin, clearly trying not to get in anyone's way. He stays in a corner of the wagon, curled up against the bulk of his young brown bear, Gracie, for warmth and comfort. He wears simple leather armor which, like with his backpack, weapons, and other equipment, looks well-used and not particularly well-tended.

The short, rather rotund Tien human smiles in genuine relief at Bort's promise. "Life on the road has its virtues, but there is something to be said for a roof over your head. The name of the town is strange to me, though. A folly is something foolish, neh? If I may ask, why is it called that?"

Throughout the journey, he has distinguished himself mostly by a willingness to cheerfully assist anywhere and anytime he's asked, without regard for the meniality of the task. Although he started off a little suspicious of the bear, once he finds out that Deerslicer knows something about the flora of the area he comes to the goblin often with questions about various plants.

In appearance, as noted Kunsheng is short and round, with a wispy mustache and beard. He's prematurely balding, but the hair on the back of his head is grown long and braided into a queue.

Before heading back to the lead wagon, Bort has a few words with Xue. (I imagine you're using surname then name as is done in China?) "Mr Kun-cheng, was it? That's right, folly means foolish, yes. Gods knows why town's called that. It's also called Plaguestone, quite ominous name, don't you think? There's a large hollow stone there that was used to feed the ill during devastating sickness that struck the town. Nowadays, it's mostly a ghost town. Can't tell you more beyond that. I'm not a superstitious dwarf by nature, but I'll be damned if I feel comfortable talking about disease and death, if it's all right with you."

Leading the wagon ahead of you, you can hear the laughter of the twin brothers, Olf and Ulf. Both are in their early-twenties, and if their story can be believed, the come from up north from the Land of the Linnorm Kings. They seem nice enough, although they are notorious pranksters. The whole trip they've exchanged clothes and had others confuse one for the other, to their great delight. Olf, or perhaps Ulf turns his head and yells at Cooky in a thick northern accent.

"Why so glum, Cocky? Didn't you hear?", he chuckles, "we're about to find a nice, clean, comfortable bed. No more ticks and mosquitoes!" His brother, quickly interjects, "They might even allow the bear in town! Who knows, they might be desperate enough to let it stay at the stables!"

Unseen to the others, the elderly elf rolls his eyes, cocks his head and appears to not have heard a thing.

retired | human rogue (thief) minister of Sarenrae at the Sinan al-Razima chapel in Etran's Folly

Valor Holysword is a cleric of Iomedae, wearing white robes with a longsword sheath at his side. He gets up every morning at the crack of dawn, finding a secluded place to roll out a prayer rug, meditate for an hour, and read his well-worn copy of the Acts of Iomedae.

Simon Samarian is the man behind the mask he calls Valor Holysword. Inside his longsword sheath is a thin rapier which he actually has the strength to wield; his stolen copy of the Acts of Iomedae only have the first nine Acts. Behind Valor's proud and brave demeanor, a deep insecurity festers.

Disease makes Simon nervous. Sure, he could heal up peasants well enough to get a free room and an occasional silver. But what if someone actually needed magic?

Simon pushed his doubt to the side and put on Valor's face.

"Cooky, what do you know of Etran's Folly?" he asks the cook. "Is the plague gone or does it still linger?"

"Why would the townsfolk be desperate?" Gamble calls over at the twins and then to Bort he asks, "Not enough travelers passing through? Is this a less traveled route for trade?"

Gable is a blond Ulfen, older than the twins and, while not an impish prankster, he is still an amicable traveling companion. He does not boast the muscular build of the northmen but can handle a sword like one. He can fix an axle and remove a stone from a horse's hoof reasonably well. However, over the past few days, he has proved most valuable in easing the boredom of uneventful nights with story, music, and song.

GM D, the original PFS 'nym had the family name first, but I switched it for this one. Xue is his family name, and Kunsheng is his personal name.

Kunsheng listens carefully to the explanation before sighing. "You are wise. Disease is indeed not something to be taken lightly, nor spoken of carelessly. Thank you for entertaining the question of a stranger." He bows to the dwarf and returns to his place, pondering On the one hand, the town may still have the imbalance that led to the plague. On the other hand, they might benefit from having a healer in residence. We will see what the future brings.

Although he's no accomplished storyteller, every now and then Kunsheng will share a tale of his harrowing journey over the Crown of the World when Gamble is taking a break from performing. Of his life before that he says little in detail. He does take time to talk to Valor about the doctrines of Iomedae, and speaks with some facility of the doctrines not only of the healer god he follows, but also of the other gods of Tian Xia. (If Valor is careful, he can keep Kunsheng talking and not have to talk much himself.)

Sinan has spent most of his leisure hours mapping their travels on his scrolled maps, while spending time to get to know each of his travel companions.

Though Valor hadn't acquiesced to Sinan's offers of talking about their respective gods due to the friendships shared between the Dawnflower and the Inheritor, he has found that Kunsheng's wealth of knowledge about the Tien pantheon to be nothing short of fascinating.

"Desperation implies a far greater need than simple trade, my friend." Gamble's easy camaraderie has been a delight in recent days compared to the uneasy stares and whispers of previous traveling companions while he was making his way through Taldor to eventually reach Lastwall, and the perceived need of their peoples. Little did Sinan know that Taldan "hospitality" would be missed when he finally reached the nations surrounding Lake Encarthan. "Though, thoughts of a warm bed do call to me."

Though only in his early thirties, Sinan wears the demeanor of a parent or shepherd with the weight of decades. When not dressed in his rather intricate armor, Sinan wears little more than the comfortable and luxurious silks of his homeland in vibrant colors and the whitest of whites. The qadiran wears his dark hair nearly to his shoulders and keeps his beard short and neat.

Rather than proselytize, Sinan has been careful to only speak of his Lady when asked or in order to impart some kind of wisdom to the situation, with the exception of with those with an obvious pious bend- namely Kunsheng and Valor. For the most part he spars, practices the blade, and works with Bort to help add to the accuracy of his maps whenever possible.

With Deerslicer withdrawn from the rest of the group, Sinan cannot help but reach out. "You have not said much, my friend. Ignore those two. We'll make sure a warm meal will be had by both you and your noble friend."

Cooky tilts his head, eying the man known as Valor with old, wizened eyes. He untilts his head and nods. "Do not worry, Valor", he speaks with a deep, yet quiet voice. "The plague is long gone. It struck the town a generation ago, about 25-30 years ago. There is no plague in Plaguestone. Only the memories of those who survived it infests their minds and hearts."

Gamble Eigirsson wrote:
"Why would the townsfolk be desperate?" Gamble calls over at the twins and then to Bort he asks, "Not enough travelers passing through? Is this a less traveled route for trade?"

"Because", Ulf or Olf replies, "they've no business. Town won't live to see another generation." Olf or Ulf continues, "It's dead. Won't be much besides a stopover town"

"Knock it off, both of you!"", Tamli Grent growls. The half-orc is Bort's second-in-command, overseeing the staff and wagons. She's in her late-30s, with shoulder length hair she keeps tucked behind a kerchief and a leather cord around her neck with a lock of hair on. While she makes sure everyone is in good spirits and everything is in working others, she's quite stern to others, being the mother figure of the group. She whips around towards Gamble. "Don't you encourage them, sir. Expect better from you given your age. Trade's still good there and plenty of traders going through there. Don't listen to these fools." The brothers grin and shrug behind Tamli's back at Gamble as if saying, "See what we have to live with?"

The wagons continue at a good pace through the road. From what you've all seen on the trip south so far, this part of Isger is sparsely populated, you've seen but a scattering of small rural farms and isolated communities. It is a temperate land, with frequent light rains and the rich smell of damp earth wafting on the pleasant breeze. The trail winds its way through the lowlands, passing along streams and through small forests. The game in this area has only recently recovered after years of war drove it into hiding.

About two hours' before sundown, you enter a thick forest. "Won't be long now", Cooky says to Valor, or perhaps to no one in particular. "Plaguestone is about an hour from here."

"Beltza, I've a feeling we're not in the Fey World anymore", said Pfifferling Chanterelle to the small companion rooted on her shoulder.

Her leaves rustling as she moved through the forest, a small birch-tree with pale bark amidst towering dark-green fir trees, “Pepper” was taking everything in, thrilled to be experiencing so much.
She stretched her branches out, likes arms, to feel the moss: "It so very different to inhabit one's own body, don't you think?"

Beltza, from Pepper's shoulder, answered as best an oversized orange chanterelle mushroom can, looking around with its little black eyes: ++pleasure ; curiosity ; pleasure++

Pepper shrugged, and sighed, thinking that Beltza was Not the best conversationalist, wondering why Progenitor could not have at least given her companion a mouth--

--More feelings from Beltza: ++sadness ; blame ; sadness++

"Oh, I am sorry. I know it's not your fault..."

But having thought of Progenitor made Pepper focus on her mission.
She looked around the woods.
"Well, no sign of any inhabitation so far, but Nature still looks tired somehow. Human-beings and their wars seem to have taken their toll."
Checking the undergrowth for animal paths, she added: "I do not see much game around here... I fear what we will find in the bigger human-being warrens, those towns where they congregate."

Then Pepper shrugs, shaking Beltza as she does, and the tree-knot she uses as a mouth opens in a wide smile: "But it is such an adventure, such an exciting adventure to experience all this that-- OH?!"

In front of her, the thick forest suddenly stopped, as if cut in two by a ribbon of hard-packed mud, with long ruts in it.
Pepper jumps up and down: "A road! Yes, that is a road!"
Not daring to step out onto it, she looks to the left-- to the right... and sees nothing.

Now able to see a patch of the sky, Pepper sees it is darkening.

"It's about two hours' before sundown, don't you think, Beltza?"

Wondering what to do, Pepper sits down on the embankment, and runs her hands through the wild grass around her...

As the caravan makes it way through the forest, the atmosphere grows mostly quiet. About an hour in, Bort speaks up. "I can't take any more of this blasted silence. Tamli, have the ale flow. I've got a story to tell!"

Tamli groans, but obeys the caravan master's orders all the same. Olf and Ulf perk up, both sporting goofy grins as the caravan trudges its way along the forest. Cooky looks uninterested in the whole affair as Bort's good cheer is a force of nature in itself.

Over the past days, you've gotten to hear several of the dwarf's tall tales and while some might be seeped in truth, what the embellishments are are sometimes hard to make out.

With a mug of ale in hand, Bort begins "Did I tell you, fellas, about the time I beat a fire giant with only my wit?"

Cooky clears his throat.

"And my boon companions, of course!", Bort quickly responds. "We were travelling along the high roads of Five Kings Mountains, on a fine summer day like this. Cooky was standing watch in the rear and Tamli was with me in the front. We weren't expecting much of trouble, all we were carrying were furs and ales to, ah, where were we heading, Tamli?"

"Caldamin, Rolgrimmdur, I don't remember which one was it, Bort", Tamli responds irritably.

"Right, right. Well, no matter. There we were, travelling along the mountain when this landslide comes out of nowhere and blocks the road! Cooky yelled about danger and as we turned around, we came face to face with a blasted fire giant."

The thing was huge! A twenty foot monstrosity! We had no choice but to surrender, isn't that right?, Bort says looking at the others. Only Cooky meets his eye before responding. "That sounds about right, Bort."

Recall Knowledge: Society DC 20:
As far as you know, fire giants aren't this tall, although perhaps there cold be some of this height.

"Anyway", Bort continues, Its camp was less than half a mile away, and there he took us. He choose to eat me first, of course, because I had more meat on me. HAH! Well, as we were left there, tied up and ready to be added to his soup, when I noticed this plant. Frostbloom, don't know if any of you have heard of it. Well, he was just about to dip me in the soup, when I pipe up and say to him. 'Oy, I know you're about to eat me and all, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let you eat me raw. You want a better taste, you use that frostbloom over there in the soup. All I ask you is that you make my death swift.'"

Recall Knowledge: Nature DC 15:
You've never heard of this plant called frostbloom, perhaps you just need to travel more like Bort.

Olf and Ulf exchange pointed glances before chuckling. "Well, Bort continues, "wouldn't you know it? He believed me! He added the frostbloom into his soup and when he tasted the broth, it froze his mouth shut! Tamli, by then had wiggled out of the ropes and we ran away down the mountain!"

Bort takes a sip from his mug. "So, what you think?", he says smiling.

"And this is why", one of the twins responds while looking at a sour Tamli, "Bort is a man after our own hearts."

As Pepper breaks through the forest, they would have a quick glance at the other wagons. As far as they could tell it could be over a dozen wolves attacking the wagons. When Pepper goes past the last wagon's wheel, they would have an uninterrupted, close up view of the wolves. Pepper would recall these are regular wolves at first appearance. They just look very sickly and weak. Something is not natural about their mange though; it's too aggressive for it to be part of the natural order, however; you can't put your finger on exactly how. Kunsheng hisses in pain as the wolf's jaws close on his leg. Unbidden, the steps he'll have to take to treat the wound spring to mind: Wash with soap and clean water, and I think that will need stitches. There is something I need to do first, though. He steps to the side, drawing his dagger, and stabs at the sickly creature.

"MASTER SINAN!", Cooky's voice yells from atop the wagon as the Tian-xian is savaged by the wolf. The elderly elf is standing at the ready, with a heavy longsword shaking in his hand. Simon and Gamble can easily see he knows how to wield it, yet has not the strength to carry it out.

Kunsheng's dagger thrust narrowly misses its mark as the wolf snarls, eyes narrowed while showing rows of dagger-like teeth.

Deerslicer's arrow flies and strikes the pink wolf near the neck, the shot nearly fatal (Crit. -4hp) and forcing it to take half a step back. Yet the pink wolf stands its ground, teeth bared yet shaking fearfully hunger apparent in its eyes.

Further down the caravan you can hear one of the twins whoop in triumph while somewhere further down Tamli's voice booms, "Don't get cocky! There's more of them!"

With Pepper's sudden appearance, Gamble's arrow flies wide and thunks into a nearby tree. The white wolf snapping its teeth in anger. It then darts into the trees, one snaking its way towards Gamble. (Wolf is moving through difficult terrain. Gains cover +2 AC while in the trees) The shape breaks through the trees before leaping into the ones in front of Gamble, pebbles and dead leaves scattering as the beast lunges, jaws open. A second bite leaves the alchemist severely wounded, fighting off shock and terror by continuing to consider how he would treat someone with his injuries. "Thank you, Valor. I will see what I can do with some of these others." He takes another short step in the direction of the teal wolf, drawing a small vial from his bandolier and focusing on it before hurling it at the wolf. Corrosive liquid sizzles as it splashes from the broken vial.

From the front of the caravan, Bort's voice yells, "Don't let that one get away, Tamli!"
"Let it go!", she yells back, "They're done for!"

Looking over its shoulder, the poor, pathetic teal wolf eyes the alchemist and his friend, then turns around to see the goblin and bear. It's pack is gone. Killed by their prey turned predators. The acid begins to burn through his skin. Growling, it makes a decision.
