"I am Drax Mensler, no wait that doesn't sound right does it,"the highwayman says as he absently mindingly chews on the barrell of his pistol, "I am Max Drensler, I think that's it, the great robber king of...Schtop and deliver up all of your valubulshh and schtufth! Oh, did I already say that part? Sorry, not feeling at the top of my game," Max adds and then immediately throws up on his horse and himself.

At Jan's griping, Landolf turns to face the man. "Those are two different things," he says gravely. "Altdorf might be occupying Ubersreik right now, and I do have my problems with that. What does that have to do with these men though? They aren't in Ubersreik causing unrest...they are stationed on the roads watching for beastmen and greenskins. They might not even know about the situation back in our city, and Ubersreik certainly won't be helped if this detachment has problems."

"More importantly, we spent weeks under the tender care of a man who wouldn't lift a finger to help anyone unless it benefited him personally. The man was a thief and a murderer. I won't be like him. These soldiers aren't hurting Ubersreik and I won't snub them for the faults of their Emperor. You should reconsider the way you think about this."

Later, faced down by the robber king, Landolf shrugs and holds up the pouch of shillings that he was given to defray their expenses on the road. "I have it right here. We'll come hand it to you. It'd be an honor to shake the hand of a famous bandit as yourself."

”Schtop or you’ll shoot, wait, that’s not right is it?” Max looks inquiringly towards Landolf hoping for a hint but none forthcoming he screws up his brow in thought. Triumphantly he cries, It’s schtop or I’ll shoot! Ha! I knew I’d remember”

There’s no one else around the coach as far as you can see.

Once Talther also starts approaching, Max with shaking hands aims both pistols and fires!

There’s a flash of powder from both pistols but nothing else happens. Max stares in confusion for a moment and then brightens...”That’s right, no more bullets, you fellows have any I can borrow?”

If Landolf and Talther charge than can reach Max before Max can do anything else.

Landolf's first plan would be to pull the man off his horse. It looks like that would be handled (roughly) through the Grappling rules?

dice=Initiative]1d10+35
dice=Melee (Brawling) 40]1d100

It does seem like Grappling is the best rule to use with a dash of mounted combat thrown in, specifically, if you are attacking someone on a horse, it is -10 to your attack. If you win an Opposed Melee Check in Round 1 then you are able to grab a hold of the target and then if you win an Opposed Strength Check in Round 2, you are able to pull him from his horse and get him to the ground. It seems like it makes sense that a second player could also attack and would have the gang up bonus and the target is concentrating on the first attack.

Initiative for Drunken Max: 1d10 + 47 ⇒ (9) + 47 = 56 Max probably has a higher Initiative than any of the party so if he's not grappled in Round 1, he'll be able to ride away at the beginning of Round 2. Valghaz's speed isn't high enough for him to get within Melee Range in Round 1.

Melee Basic (18): 1d100 ⇒ 51 51 which is a failure with a SL of -4 Drunk Max has much worse stats than sober Max

Landolf sprints forward and grabs onto Max's leg before he has a chance to ride away. Max makes an ineffective attempt to keep Landolf from grabbing him but is having so much difficulty staying on his horse that he cannot defend himself.

Talther Augenlos wrote:

Since Landolf has already grabbed onto Max, there's nothing that Talther needs to do in Round 1. In Round 2, you can assist Landolf with the Opposed Strength Test. The rules do not cover Aiding Opposed Characteristic Tests but it seems very reasonable that a second character would be able to hold someone down.

Talther is certainly game to assist Landolf in round 2 then.

Round 2

Jan has finished loading his Blunderbuss and will shoot at Max if Max tries to ride away.

Landolf and Max are grappled together and need to make an Opposed Strength Test. Talther can assist. If Landolf wins, then Max is pulled off his horse and stops fighting and is helpless if Valghaz wants to attack.

Adelaida tries to seize the horse's reins so it don't gallop away

Landolf and Talther easily wrestle Max to the ground where he immediately begins sobbing. Adelaida grabs the hanging reins of the horse and holds it in place. The horse seems quite accepting of this turn of events and begins to graze at the skimpy ground cover.

Jan walks over to you all, blunderbuss in his hands. "I vote we string this one up now. Course, there ain't no trees here so we'd need to take him back into the forest first. Or we can drag him behind the coach until we get to Schrabwald. Won't be much left of him by the time we get there but the road wardens can hang what's left. I would shoot him but I don't want to waste the powder. Or we can just slit his throat and leave him for the buzzards."

Max sobs grow louder as Jan talks.

Initially, Ruprecht had looked upon the drunken bandit with a smirk, expecting it to be a jape of some kind. However, as the man made it clear he was serious, Ruprecht could not help himself from giggling every time the man said "Schtop".

Unfortunately, when he tried to fire his pistols and nothing happened, Ruprecht doubled over and sat down as he was laughing hysterically at the utter absurdity of the situation.

He holds a hand up to Max, saying "Schtop! Schtop!" then holds his stomach as it begins to hurt from the exertion of his laughter.

Tears streaming down his face, he apologies to his friends, "Oh, that was too humourous! Sorry for not helping! Hee , hee, hee! "

"A souvenir!"

”Ish it a deal then? I tell you and you schtop and let schteuben and me go?”

Assuming you don’t give a flat no, Max is happy to tell his story and sobers up a good bit as he talks.

”I wasn’t always like this you see, I used to be respected, I used to be somebody. I was a message rider, Steuben and I went all over the Empire. Even all the way to Kislev once. If you had to get a message delivered, you called on Max and Steuben. Then our camp got attacked when we were on the road to Nuln from Altdorf. Beastmen...we got away but Steuben was hurt bad. We tried to make it to the next Coach Inn but poor Steuben couldn’t go any further.””

Max sobs pitifully for a moment remembering his best friend almost dying in the middle of nowhere.

”That’s when the highwaymen came upon us. One of them was a hedge wizard and said he was able to heal Steuben but I had to agree to work for them for 3 years in return...I had no choice, I had to save Steuben. So, I spent 3 years with them waylaying travelers. Most people just gave us their valuables and then we’d ride away with no one getting hurt. But one time the coach passengers tried to fight. It was bad, never killed anyone before that. The coachman’s eyes still haunt me, I see them every night when I sleep. I figured out if I drank enough schnapps the dreams wouldn’t come. So that’s what I did. Over the years drifted further south and west and ended up in Ubersreik. Made a contact, did some jobs, stayed drunk as possible. But now the jobs dried up and this fellow, shortish fellow with red hair and a bushy moustache, name of Rolf something said he’d pay me to rob this here coach. Wasn’t supposed to be any fighting. Didn’t say nothing about armed guards riding inside. So, Steuben and I waited and stopped the coach, and you know the rest...”

"Well, it be like this, I don't know much more than what I've told you. Someone must have told Rolf who I was because he approached me last time I was in the Marktplatz, said he had heard that I needed to earn money and he had an easy mark. I was supposed to split the loot 70/30 with him and it was either do this job or have to sell Steuben and he's an old horse now. I'm afraid he'd end up in some stew pot." Max starts crying again. Feeling the weight of his new pistol, Talther comments:

"That was quite the gesture, Landolf. I hope he finds some sense underneath that stink of booze and follows through. Because he ought to hang and that is a lifeline. I am inclined to reconcile your point of view with Valghaz's, if only because I do not think that Max will find murder and theft so easy sans his firearms. Frankly, without much of wits either. Come, let us be off!"

Day 5 Afternoon - Completion of Luitpold Inn to Enchanter’s Shadow Inn located in the town of Schrabwald

Jan mutters something under his breath and spits when he sees you let Max ride off. None of you can catch what he's saying but it doesn't seem to be positive comments on the intelligence of any of you.

The Enchanter's Shadow Inn is located in the remote town of Schrabwald. As the towers of Castle Drachenfels can be discerned on a clear day, the inn could literally be said to be in the Enchanter’s Shadow. This is a rather forbidding place. Picture a Transylvanian village with Castle Dracula looming over it.

The locals are a gloomy and dispirited lot. Engaging them in conversation only makes you feel sad. They are all convinced that the Great Enchanter will be returning again to Drachenfels soon.

Day 6 - Enchanter's Shadow to Smith Sons Inn

The day passes by quite calmly for a change with no drunken highwaymen or desperate army camp to slow you down. The Smith Sons Inn is a busy fortified coaching inn a day's journey to the south of Bogenhafen. There is excitement in the air as the preparations are fully underway for the upcoming Schaffenfest in Bogenhafen. The inn is named after a local legend about how a child wielding Sigmar’s Hammer will one day prove to be humanity’s saviour.

This inn is magnificent and well-tended, with polished oak tables and clean flagstones. The taproom is crowded; a party of Grey Mountain Dwarfs sit near to a wealthy woman and her liveried servants, whilst another table plays host to a group of white-robed Shallyan pilgrims. As you enter the taproom, the barman bids hearty welcome. He then laughs as he recognises your coachman.

“Jan!” he shouts, “It is good to see you again. So you must be Andreas’s friends? Please follow me!” He beckons you into a partitioned section. “Your esteemed companion was here the night before last. He asked me to keep a little something for you," he says with a wink. He hurries off behind the bar and quickly returns, plonking a small cask on the table. “Ta da!” he cries, and turns the keg round with a flourish to reveal that the words BUGMAN’S XXXXXX have been branded into the side.

The table full of the Grey Mountain dwarfs looks on with envy when the see what Andreas has arranged for you. If you all choose to partake there's enough ale for each of you to have 2 pints but be warned that BUGMAN'S in well known to be stronger than regular ale.

Landolf puts a hand on Valghaz's shoulder. "I actually agree with you. I didn't handle that well. We shouldn't have taken him up on his offer as it stood. Beyond that, things got harder. I'll take that as a lesson. Though I hope not to have cause to use it, it seems like life has other plans in store for us."

"It looks like I bought this," he continues, holstering the remaining pistol. "Hopefully I can sell it for something in Bogenhafen."

At the Smith Son's Inn, Landolf doesn't see the need for a pint of Bugman's, let alone two. He would be remiss if he didn't try the drink at least once, though.

Valghaz had been around humans enough to realize that they were rubbing off on him. After listening to Landolf he nodded and reached up to pat his comrade on the shoulder. He nodded, unsure of what words were appropriate in such a situation. Nothing in his experience had prepared him for such reasonableness. He hoped that the gesture would be clear enough.

All such considerations melted away, though, when Bugman’s was before them. Valghaz’s eyes widened so much that they may well have popped out. ”This...this is the drink of kings’!” He said, in astonishment. ”Such generosity...” Not knowing when such a boon might come again, he resolved to drink slowly, so that he might savor every drop.

I'll pass on that one, thanks. Guard duty. We've just seen and argued about someone who couldn't stop to drink. I won't blame him before drinking too much of the good stuff myself right after.

One pint of Bugmann's XXXXXX is equal to four pints of regular human ale so for every pint you drink, make 4 Consume Alcohol Skill Checks.

What happens on a failed test:
For each Test you fail, you suffer a –10 penalty to WS, BS, Ag, Dex, and Int, to a maximum of –30 per Characteristic

The jealous dwarfs at the other table have been trying to overhear your conversation.

Two of the dwarfs stand and point angry fingers at Adelaida and a raucous conversation breaks out at the table that is loud enough for everyone in the tavern to overhear. Much fist pounding at their table also breaks out.
"Hear that? She's turning down Bugman's!"
"What!?! Her ladyship too dainty to have a drink?" Pound Pound
"I think she said something about dwarfs being stupid!" Pound
"Who's the youngling? Looks like an Ironhammer clan bloke."
"You know what they say about those Ironhammer's, willing to work with elves even!" Pound
"I HATE ELVES!" POUND POUND POUND
"If the long legs are too dumb to appreciate it, we should just take it from them!" POUND POUND POUND
"Yeah, that's a great plan!!!" POUND POUND POUND POUND

One of the inebriated dwarfs shouts at your table, "Oi, humans and youngling, we'll fight you for the ale since you're too dumb to appreciate it. Come'on unless cowards you want to be known as."

Valghaz slowly took a sip, put down the ale and turned to the table, a look on his face that screamed murder. Very quietly he stood up, his pick in hand. He looked at the raucous table, and said: ᚹᚺᛁᚷ᛫ᛟᚾᛖ᛫ᛟᚠ᛫ᛃᛟᚢ᛫ᛁᚾᛋᚢᛚᛏᛖᛞ᛫ᛗᛃ᛫ᚲᛚᚨᚾ᛭ᛋᛏᛖᛈ᛫ᛟᚢᛏᛋᛁᛞᛖ᛬ᚦᛖ᛫ᛟᚹᚾᛖᚱ᛫ᛟᚠ᛫ᚦᛁᛋ᛫ᛖᛋᛏᚨᛒᛚᛁᛋᚺᛗᛖᚾᛏ ᛫ᛋᚺᛟᚢᛚᛞᚾᛏ᛫ᚺᚨᚡᛖ᛫ᛏᛟ᛫ᚲᛚᛠᚾ᛫ᛃᛟᚢᚱ᛫ᛒᛚᛟᛟᛞ᛫ᛟᚠᚠ᛫ᛟᚠ᛫ᚦᛖ᛫ᚠᛚᛟᛟᚱ᛬

Dwarven:
” Which one of you insulted my clan? Step outside. The owner of this establishment shouldn’t have to clean your blood off of the floor.”

It was clear that he wasn’t joking. He had taken the last sip as a precaution. If he lost the ensuing duel, then he would at least die with his second to last experience being fasting the finest of ales.

Some Time Earlier...

"I have heard great things about Bugman's. I will gladly enjoy these!", says Talther.

Time will tell how much of that is bravado...

He drinks one pint...

Consume Alcohol 46: 1d100 ⇒ 27
Consume Alcohol 46: 1d100 ⇒ 84

"THHASS GRAATEE STOFF!!", he announces, clearly hammered!

Now

Talther is too busy enjoying the Bugman's to pay much heed to tavern banter.

Then the dwarves get rude.

He seizes his rungo, stands up - just about - and yells:

"DA LAZ FELLER OO DRIED DO STEL FRUM US WEN ON DE ERTH! SODDDOF!!"

Hm...I said above that Landolf was only having a drink: less than a full pint. How many tests does he need to make in that case? The Consume Alcohol entry in the book goes per drink, not per pint, so it's confusing.
