When Jean-Pierre steps through the second portal...

You step into the middle of what appears to be Breachill’s incinerated ruins. A volcano has erupted beneath Citadel Altaerein, obliterating the fortress and showering the surrounding area with lava bombs. Your favorite buildings are ablaze, many with key townsfolk trapped inside behind locked doors. Other structures have collapsed atop seriously injured townsfolk, innocents are stranded between narrow rivers of lava, and tremors have damaged the few viable shelters. All the while, bolts of red lightning course through the volcano’s cloud of ash, and the roiling mass takes the
form of Dahak’s visage.

There’s no saving the town, but you have opportunities to save your friends and neighbors!

You can attempt two DC 36 Acrobatics, Athletics, Breachill Lore, Crafting, Medicine, or Thievery check to help rescue vulnerable residents.

Running from site to site, Jean-Pierre manages to free many townsfolk, much to the looming dragon's fury!

The ash cloud’s draconic appearance coalesces into a semisolid form and dives ground-ward, exploding into a choking pyroclastic flow that blocks all sight. Through this storm of ash, you can periodically sense Dahak circling around you as his dragonstorm wreaks havoc in the surrounding area. While circling, the manifestation goads you, taunting you with assurances that your efforts are futile, and inviting you to accept fast deaths, or face an imminent apocalypse...

You can try to refute these doom-laden prophecies with two DC 36 Arcana, Dahak Lore, Deception, Diplomacy, Dragon Lore, Intimidation, or Religion checks.

The world around Jean-Pierre fades into roiling chaos, as a voice that comes from everywhere, and yet nowhere, thunders:

"THIS IS BUT THE FIRST OF MANY DEVASTATIONS. WHEREVER YOU GO, MY FURY SHALL FOLLOW!"

Then, suddenly, you are falling, and land in the middle of a sandstorm!

Just about ten yards away, is a weathered stone arch, lying sideways, which is unmistakably an elf-gate. Propped against it is the sand-blasted remains of a recently slain gnome wearing ragged heavy desert clothing. At the corpse’s side is a small satchel containing a waterskin, a week’s rations, and seven letters addressed to various parties in the city of Katapesh. Six of these are worried missives to gnome family members, and the seventh is an official plea for help from Soukmaster Satla Kivarn to the Pactmasters. Each letter speaks of the terrifying dust storms and haunting wails that had been plaguing the town of Finderplain...

Jean-Pierre is positive that the dust storm’s intensity suggests a supernatural cause, and the degree to which the storm has shredded local plants indicates the storm’s been active for many hours.

Suddenly, there is a brief lull in the storm, and Jean-Pierre is able to make out, faintly, the outlines of some kind of settlement...

The settlement appears to be an eclectic mishmash of structures from different styles and time-periods (and no sense of taste), arrayed with the best of intentions along unregulated thoroughfares.

As you go down one street, you hear an unearthly howl, which sends shivers down your spine.

On those closer to it, it has an entirely different effect: You hear four high-pitched screams, and three gnomes and a half-elf come running out of a building further down the street...

...as they do so, three swirling clouds of dust-laden wind, their coloration tending towards brown and red, but they churning with violent wind and lightning, rush out of a side-street to intercept them!

It takes about 10 minutes, but you eventually arrive at a large structure near the center of the settlement, which appears to be some kind of town hall. Once you have had a chance to catch your breath, and cough up silica particles, you are introduced to the current leader of the settlement: A tired looking female gnome.

She makes a half-hearted pass at straightening her clothing. “I am Satla Kivarn, soukmaster of Finderplain for sixty-seven days now. That means I oversee trade, general mayoral duties, and emergency operations as needed.”

She then grimaces.

"Unfortunately, the current situation is something of a disaster. This storm isn't natural, and there is something... out there... preying upon stragglers. Some of the survivors we’ve pulled in have mentioned hearing whispering urges toward violence, or were tormented for hours by hearing voices promising the end of the world. Others have seen glowing eyes and horns that disappear into the dust. Whatever it is, it’s cruel, smart, and relentless."

The gnome sighs.

"At this point, I need information, rescuers, those leaders, and supplies—food and water, especially." She looks you up and down appraisingly. [b]"I think you might be able to help me with that, actually..."

Basically, there are three task areas:

Acquire Supplies: Go to the Granary, and haul back stuff. Give me an appropriate skill, or other description about how you do it (e.g. Survival, or Athletics).

Bluemarket: Shepherd Survivors (Diplomacy); Seek stragglers (Medicine, Perception, or Survival - this can be done up to 4 times); Looting (Crafting, Perception, or Thievery). Each attempt takes 10 minutes, and requires a Fort save against the storm.

Royal Rise: Go and convince a former town leader to come and help (Deception, Diplomacy, Intimidation, Performance, and Society, or Fort saves (to out-drink him).

Jean-Pierre finds a group of 26 survivors—a mix of gnomes, humans, and dwarves—who took shelter in an inn called the Stove and Cupboard. Here they’ve survived on the inn’s larders, but on three different occasions the thing outside has circled the building, howled, and rattled the building’s walls. The civilians are all eager to relocate but won’t do so without a major escort. Their de facto leader, Soluk Tark, a female dwarf, is especially outspoken against leaving the inn, and Jean-Pierre is unable to sway them.

Heading back outside, he searches around the nearby streets, evacuating several survivors to a temporary shelter, but also turning up numerous corpses of humanoids and pack animals that fell victim to the weather, elementals, or more disturbingly, teeth and claws...

Knocking on the door, you are let in be a pair of Gnomish guards (after they verify that you are not some monster).

'King' Narvimelbs is delighted to have a new guest (apparently, the party, which has been going for two days, was getting a little stale), and after a long drinking contest, the inebriated 'ex-King' is quite happy to take his 'court' back to the main settlement grouping.

A grinning pugwampi, a major bestial mutagen, a sapphire-studded wedding band worth 200 gp, five withered gnoll ears, the bejeweled hilt of a large sword (missing its blade but still worth 500 gp), and a gold chain with intricate charms worth 150 gp, one of which bears the inscription “spice of my life” in Kelish—a term of affection.

Bleeding heavily, Jean-Pierre is then able to return to the main group.

With the beast's death, the supernatural dust storm gradually passes, and residents emerge to assess the damage, plan repairs, and check on their friends and neighbors. The town is battered but intact, and numerous impromptu committees form to organize repairs and enumerate the victims. More than a hundred are dead or vanished (in fact, all of the people in the tavern subsequently turned up dead... although disturbingly, several bodies appear to have been chewed on by a gnome), and several cargoes have gone entirely missing.

Nevertheless, the grateful townsfolk gather money to help compensate you for your assistance. This reward includes an assortment of currencies from 27 different nations, totaling 57 pp, 1,376 gp, and 1,420 sp. On top of this, Satla gives you a major eagle-eye elixir and a major elixir of life.

Eventually, however, it becomes apparent that a rather unsavory group took advantage of the chaos...

Already known as pushy negotiators, opportunists, and slavers, the Scarlet Triad generally received only grudging cooperation from Finderplain’s residents. Several days ago, Triad agents and an antiquities dealing gnome named Benneb engaged in a verbal altercation. As the dust storm gathered, witnesses saw the Scarlet Triad agents pack up and leave on the road to Katapesh with all speed. Benneb was nowhere to be found during the storm, and soon after the storm clears, Benneb’s wagon is found ransacked with broken locks.

Rumors quickly circulate that the Scarlet Triad agents kidnapped and robbed Benneb, and by examining the wagon and Benneb’s temporary residence, you can confirm the signs of struggle and forced entry— including a hastily scrawled “S.T.” (indicating “Scarlet Triad”) inscribed in a triangle carved low on the wall (at about the height of a crouching gnome).

The whole Scarlet Triad situation deeply upsets the soukmaster. Even in the 8 months she’s lived in Finderplain, this wouldn’t be the first time the organization has harassed the residents, yet it’s easily the most egregious incident. The Scarlet Triad’s kidnapping and enslavement of the residents falls to Satla Kivarn to resolve. After your capable rescue work, you are a local hero, and she hopes to recruit your help before traveling to Katapesh herself.

Katapesh is about 130 miles away.

Jean-Pierre lets out a ragged cheer when the beast falls.

That... was unpleasant.

When he later learns about what the Triad did, he wrinkles his nose in distaste.

"I wish that I could say that I was surprised, but frankly, I am not. I would be more than happy to help you... The Triad and I have history, and I would see them cast down!"

He then pauses thoughtfully.

"Still... 130 miles is a long way. How about we Shadow Walk there?"
