The Midnight Mirror

Nearly every nation has contributed to the Mendevian Crusade, but few are willing to send additional aid to assist the Pathfinder Society directly. Owed a favor the elves cannot refuse, Pathfinders travel to Kyonin to secure a force of some of the finest demon-hunters in Avistan only to find that the hunters are missing in action. Can the Pathfinders extract the lost elves from the depths of Tanglebriar, or will they become the latest casualties of Treerazer’s domain?

The Midnight Mirror

You have been summoned to the Grand Lodge by Master of Spells Aram Zey. You are directed to the deep subbasement where the Hao Jin Tapestry is kept, and you are told to wait while he works with a group of agents he is sending into the tapestry.

Introduce yourselves to each other!

The sound of wooden footsteps tapping on the stone floor can be heard as something approaches. Upon arrival it is a small creature that stands only a bit under 4 feet. Its body is a tangles up mesh of vines that trace under a set of clothes made of spider webs, with a cloak of autumn leaves sprouting from its back. The most interesting feature is that it has a Pumpkin for a head.

"Hey, hey now. No need to look shocked. I don't bite." It attempts to joke. Perhaps it does not resonate well, because the creature seems to lack social grace. "The name is Kindle Crow. You called for Rosella Illicia, daughter of the late former Pathfinder and wizard Magellan Illicia. She is now present."

Silence fills the room He stands alone for a moment, then the pumpkin creature looks at the wall, placing what could be called its hands on its hips. "No need to be shy, now! Come out and say hello!"

Slowly and steadily, the light blue ethereal form of a young woman in her teen years steps through the wall. She wears a dress of simple design that goes down to her wrists and ankles, with hair pulled behind her head in a pony tail, and a flower protruding from the front. She shyly bows, eyes gazing downward.

"He.. Hello. I am Rosella Illicia, and my friend here is the one who is now the Pathfinder... Please do not be alarmed by my appearance.." She then stands back at full height of about the same as the pumpkin headed Leshy. She goes over to her companion and stands slightly behind him, as though attempting to be unseen.

A tall, beautiful elven male dressed in Osirion-style desert robes silently watches the appearance of the leshy and its phantom. Like many elves, he carries a rapier and a bow. The most curious evident quality of this elf is that he is surrounded by wispy tendrils of shadow that move as if urged by some unseen force.

The elf performs a series of short, complex hand gestures. The shadows coalesce briefly into an orb in front of him. Within the orb, as though separated by vast distance, are many tiny points of light. As quickly as it appears the orb recedes, and in its place is a tiny dragon, no bigger than a housecat, with scales as black as night and a long tail ending in a stinger. The creature flaps its wings and comes to rest on the elf's shoulder.

The elf smiles serenely.

I am Quenly, the Jacinth Sage. I have made this creature from elf-magic. It will speak for me, and relay your thoughts to me. The voice is heard by all present, in their native tongues, though neither the elf nor the dragon has spoken aloud.

I serve the ancient gods of my people. Since the gods chose me as their vessel I have heard no voices but theirs. I can see words upon your lips, if you face me when you speak, but it is simpler by far for you to communicate with me by thought. My creature need only be nearby.

I understand that we are to travel to Kyonin? It has been some nine years sine I left. I return with much new knowledge. My people will be glad.

I will typically post Quenly's 'speech' with this alias, as long as he has a shadow-ally active. If this gets confusing just let me know and I'll revert to using Quenly's alias.

Coming from down the hallway, you hear the sounds of clanking armor and a rustling of feathers, accompanied by some annoyed but jovial shouting.

Beak! Be careful! You're too big for these hallways! Don't get the master of spells mad at us by knocking any artifacts off their pedestals! Be careful you clod!

After a few more moments of this, a short but wide half orc enters the room. He is clad in glimmering mithril, except for what appears to be an adamantine gauntlet on one hand, with a holy symbol of a flexed arm hanging around his neck. Anyone with any knowledge religion will recognize it as a symbol of Kurgess, the Strong Man - god of competition, sport, and fair play.

As he enters the room, he smiles widely and greets everyone, while the ruffling of feathers and the startled grumbling of other pathfinders continues from the hall.

Hahaha! Every group is more motley than the last! But more capable as well! Greetings! Kramac is my name! It will surely be a pleasure to adventure with all of you! And this here is Beak! My faithful companion!

Kramac motions to the door, as if expecting that another creature had entered the room. Seeing only an empty doorway, Kramac sighs, and returns to the door.

BEAK! Get in here! BEAK!

A few moments later, a gigantic Heron ducks its head through the doorway and stands before the party.

As he sails the Voracious once more into Absalom Harbor, the Elf known as Flyndyngylyn wonders quietly about yet another summons from Aram Zey. He had been sent on more than a few missions by the Master of Spells...but since Zey made no secret of his disdain for Flyn on each occasion, the ranger was genuinely curious why the man continued to summon him...

Undoubtedly, it concerns the Tapestry...and no doubt it must be a serious matter. That pompous bastard has let it be known more than once that he has no use for me, even after several successful missions; hate to see what he'd do if I failed. He must be desperate indeed to include me in a summons, yet again...

"Hooooooo!"

The Elf looks up, grinning at his owl perched high up in the crow's nest, serving as lookout. "Yes, my friend, we have arrived, indeed..."

Once docked, he gathers his gear and pulls the hood from his cloak up over his head, calling the owl as he walks to the gangplank. "Archimedes! Come!"

The owl gracefully flies down and perches on the ranger's shoulder. After reporting to the Absalom Harbormaster, he then heads into Absalom proper...

Although a bit hungry, Flyn knows he'll hear an earful from Zey if he's late, so he makes a beeline for the Grand Lodge. Regardless of the reason, it's good to be home again; I hope they're serving refreshments along with this mission brief...

Very familiar with the place, Flyn effortlessly makes his way to the subbasement. It appears I'm not the first to arrive...well, at least I'm not the last as Master Zey would crucify me...

Arching an eyebrow as he sees a pumpkin-headed Leshy, an ethereal girl, and a pale looking Elf with a dragon that speaks for him, thinking, This will be interesting, to say the least...

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (10) + 6 + (6) = 22

He nods to himself as he identifies the other Elf's spell. He then smiles and bows to them. "Greetings. Flyndyngylyn, at your service...but as that can be a mouthful, you may call me Flyn..."

As the new entry arrives, Flyn's eyes go wide in recognition and he immediately walks up to clasp arms with the half-Orc. "Kramac, my friend! Long time, no see! Great to be journeying with you once again. Have you seen Kiboko lately? Do you know if he'll be joining us as well?"

Zaarah seems to be pleasantly surprised!

”Oh Master Flyn!!! Master Flyn Sir!! It is so good to see you again! Such an unbelievable honor to serve with you again!“ Zaarah shouts and runs to Flyn’s side.

”It is really you! But can you believe that we are here with this arrogant master of spells again?!!“ she says rolling her eyes.

”You cannot believe what he said about you the last time that I saw him! Master Flyn, you can be sure that I did not allow him to speak about you with disrespect and I clarified all your heroic deeds that I was able to witness!“

She suddenly draws her Scimitar that is so black that it almost absorbs light.

"Mesh! Wha ... what?!? I cannot believe that we agree on something again! Yes, yes ... ” she says and looks from the sword to Flyn ”... he’s a super Pathfinder!“ she says grinning.

She seems to listen to something and looks at her black magical sword and then starts laughing!

”Ha ha ha ... “

Suddenly she realises that Flyn and her are not alone.

”Oh Mr. handsome elf and Mr. pumpkin man and Ms. ghostly queen and Mr. broad shoulder man and hello two birds too! So great to meet you! Are you sure ... The Midnight Mirror

The group of you meet up and spend some time catching up in some cases, introducing in others. A journeyman wizard comes up beside you and coughs, pointing up to the scaffolding where Aram Zey stands, with a look of utter contempt on his face.

"If it isn't too much trouble, perhaps you could get up here so we can get on with this?"

You step up onto the platform next to the Master of Spells (with Beak standing on the ground, leaning his huge head against Kramac's leg). Once you are all assembled, he begins.

“Pathfinders, let’s keep this brief. That was the seventeenth group it has been my grueling duty to send through the tapestry today, and words cannot express my inordinate pleasure at understanding there will be an eighteenth,” he growls through the gritted teeth of a forced smile. “Nonetheless, this mission is an important one, and the society has few others who are cut out to handle the task.” He pauses to take several deep breaths, which do much to alleviate his sour mood.

“One of my colleagues, Venture-Captain Varian Jeggare, spent a considerable amount of time in Kyonin, and in doing so he performed a considerable service for Queen Telandia Edasseril. She owes him a considerable favor in return, and he was gracious enough to use it for the society’s benefit. Jeggare is busy elsewhere, so he cannot deliver the message himself. Instead he wrote out a formal request and letter of introduction for all of you. It seems he thinks you would represent the society well in playing messenger,” Zey explains before adding under his breath, “and to his credit I can imagine worse ambassadors.”

“As you can see, the letter is sealed, and it should remain so until you meet General Theila Tenasi and give it to her. In effect, it requests that she provide the Pathfinder Society a contingent of rangers specialized in hunting demons to assist us as we make our way to Jormurdun. So, that’s your mission: Go to Kyonin, meet with the general, and make sure the elves don’t back out of this favor. We have a contact in Greengold who can secure you quick passage back to Absalom or anywhere else you need to go afterward. You’ll be using the Tapestry to reach Kyonin, and Kreighton Shaine has already contacted the elves to let them know to expect you. Any questions?”

Remember, this is early Season 5, so this mission is about getting assistance with the eventual recovery of the Sky Citadel Jormordun.

DC 15 Knowledge (local or nobility), DC 10 if you are an elf:
The appropriate way to deliver the letter would be to show the missive’s unbroken seal, open it, and then read it aloud, giving the recipient an opportunity to parse out lies and judge the visitors’ integrity.

She tries to ignore Aram’s disrespect as best as possible and is clearly agitated by his arrogance and dominant presence.

'Foreign'?

Though the night-black dragonling 'voices' the query - and the telepathic voice is devoid of tonality - Quenly frowns somewhat.

The dragon continues: I am a member of the sect of Ancient Lorekeepers - religious scholars who keep the histories of the elven peoples. I am of Kyonin. I am the obvious choice for a diplomatic mission to Kyonin; my return home will be an occasion of celebration.

On to practical matters. I have traveled in the Tapestry before, but never used it as a gateway to another place on Golarion. How is this different than our other journeys into the artifact?

Is there any reason why my fellow elves would be reluctant to honour their bargain with Jeggare?

Quenly know: local, elf, ancient lorekeeper: 1d20 + 4 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 4 + 5 = 21

It is imperative that we open the letter in front of General Telasi, showing her the Seal. An extra-dimensional space would be the ideal storage location until we meet with her.

May I also suggest that each of you brings a small supply of diamond dust. I need no materials for most of my magic - it derives from my nature as an elf - but Restoration spells require the dust.

I suggest maybe enough for a couple of castings of the 100gp version - if we end up needing to remove permanent negative levels it should be possible to purchase more dust in Kyonin.

Quenly also has a decent +15 to diplomacy, with a couple of situational bonuses.

Quenly looks sadly at Flyn.

Telepathy to Flyn only:

I am sorry that you never knew your father, Flyndyngylyn. It is a pity that your mother left Osirion, but it is quite undertandable that she would want to rejoin her own family if she was not also of Osirion. I would be happy to tell you more about your father's culture. It is a culture that changed the world. You should know your heritage.

Rosella 'heard'. If Quenly wants to speak to one individual I will normally put that dialogue in a spoiler, as I did for Flyn above. Mainly Quenly will talk to everyone at once though.

I merely found your choice of words peculiar. After all, I am not a foreigner in Kyonin. But I must seem to be a foreigner to you. Think no more of it.

I'm amused that Quenly is completely oblivious to Shamak's shouting :)

Zey sighs dramatically. "The spell I use is beyond your understanding, but suffice it to say that I bring two points on Golarion together via the dimension warping magic of the tapestry. You will step through and be in Kyonin."

Quenly's Dragon wrote:

"Well, that depends on what other interactions they have had recently. Your job is to make sure that they are still friendly and honor Jeggare's request."

With that he turns to the tapestry and begins casting a spell. His assistants direct you to step up and touch a spot on the tapestry, then step through.

--------------

The journey through the Hao Jin Tapestry is quick. Six elves wearing full plate armor as smooth as pearl meet you on the other side. They confirm your identities before escorting you into an elegant keep of artfully styled wood and stone. Up several flights of steps, the elves signal that they have reached their destination, knock, and open the doors to admit you into General Tenasi’s chambers.

Tenasi's spacious room provides a panoramic view of the surrounding woodlands. General Tenasi, an elven woman with chestnut brown hair and wearing medium armor over fine teal clothing, nods and invites you to enter.

She acknowledges the elves, then addresses the others. “As outsiders in Kyonin, I would appreciate your contemplating the rarity of your positions. As a general in charge of these lands’ defense, I expect you to appreciate the gravity of mine. This conversation would not be possible were it not for the letter I understand is in your possession.”

Quenly glowers as Aram Zey disparages the group. The ever-present shadows that accompany the elf rise up to surround him, intensifying and solidifying. They expand, forming great wing-like shapes that silently move as Quenly rises off the ground.

And then Zey's spell takes effect.

Quenly smiles as he finds himself back home. He nods in acknowledgement towards the elven soldiers. An honour guard he thinks to himself. How appropriate.

The General nods as Quenly presents the letter, and listens as he reads.

Letter from Count Varian Jeggare wrote:

Most Honorable General Tenasi,

As you may have been informed, soon after making your acquaintance at the Midsummer Masquerade, I enjoyed the privilege of performing a service to the Viridian Crown. Her Majesty’s generous tokens of appreciation included her counselors’ intimation that you might aid me in an urgent endeavor.

When the demon horde breached the wardstones surrounding the Worldwound, the nations of the Inner Sea region responded with unprecedented unity. Both the Kyonin rangers and the Pathfinder Society have provided support to the latest Mendevian Crusade in an effort to halt the invasion and to repair the breach.

The Worldwound horde is not, however, the only emerging concern. A long-lost dwarven Sky Citadel has recently reappeared. Within its ancient chambers lie millennia of previously unobtainable history. While the Pathfinder Society has already devised plans for a campaign to explore the Sky Citadel, the citadel remains within the region of the Worldwound. No warriors in Avistan can boast the experience of your rangers, who have fought with such valor against the demonic forces of the Witchbole. If you can spare but a score of these peerless fiend-slayers, your assistance would be long remembered not only by the Society but by one to whom Queen Telandia has favored with her gratitude.

Hopeful of your assistance, I present the bearers of this message as capable Pathfinders and beseech you to aid their endeavor.

Count Varian Jeggare

Note: A copy of this letter is on the slideshow.

General Tenasi frowns during the reading, and at its conclusion she stands and says, "You would ask me to forfeit my defense to appease spectacularly armed treasure hunters? Kyonin will not give up valuable troops for a secondary objective to a mission it has already supported — especially not when that objective is spearheaded by plunderers!"

"You do me a dishonour by describing me as a plunderer and a treasure hunter, General. I am a Lorekeeper of Kyonin. You of all people must know what that means. I am a Jeweled Sage - a scholar of History. The lost Sky Citadel represents an unequaled opportunity to acquire first-hand knowledge of an endeavour ancient even by our standards. It would be a grievous loss if we were not able to grasp this chance.

But I sense that there is something else troubling you - or you would be glad to repay the Crown's debt. You speak of the gravity of your situation, and of giving up troops, as though you were pressed by enemies even as we speak. We ask only for the loan of a small group of hunters. Is your situation here so dire that they cannot be spared, even though their service would be in destroying mutual enemies within the worldwound?"

Quenly addresses the general in Elvish whist his creature telepathically translates.

Flyn bows upon meeting the Elven General. He nods as Quenly introduces the party and presents the letter, impressed by how the Lorekeeper presents himself, in addition to his speech...

Expecting talk like this from Aram Zey but not his own kind, the ranger bristles at Tenasi’s last words. ”You think us mere treasure hunters, General? I assure you, we Pathfinders have aided in the Mendevian crusades no less than Kyonin. I have entered the Worldwound before and fought the Demons there...others in this party probably have as well. Kramac and I fought side-by-side against the Demons, both in lands surrounding the Worldwound and in defense of the Diamond City itself...more than just Kyonin would have suffered if they had broken through there. We did not fight for mere treasure then...we fought because it was the right thing to do! We would not ask for your help if it were otherwise...”

Calming down a bit upon hearing Quenly’s rationale, Flyn temporizes his next words. ”If, as my friend surmises, you are pressed by enemies now, I would be happy to aid you, as both a Pathfinder and an Elf, if you think I could be of assistance...I have a particular dislike when it comes to Demons...”

“News of the Wardstones’ failure reached the Witchbole as quickly as it did Iadara, and the demons have renewed their attacks with greater ferocity,” General Tenasi explains. “I recalled the Uprooters, but one group has not returned or even responded, and by all evidence has been lost. I signed the order to discontinue attempts to locate them, for we do not have the resources to commit even a scout to the task. ”

“As a result, none of my battle plans account for these thirteen lost rangers or their commander Lanverel. Were you to find and rescue them, I could assign them to assist you in reaching the Sky Citadel—after ample recovery time, of course.”

"If you agree to this arrangement, you can visit our quartermaster to purchase any additional supplies you may need, then I will have one of my wizards teleport you to the last known location of the missing squad, Mount Armiya."

If you have any questions, you may ask. You can also make the following knowledge checks.

Knowledge (Geography or History)

DC 15:
Virtually all of Golarion’s elves left Golarion for a refuge called Sovyrian when the Starstone fell. In their absence, an exiled demon lord named Treerazer occupied a portion of Kyonin. Today, Treerazer’s portion of Kyonin is known as Tanglebriar, a swampland twisted by his demonic influence.
DC 20:
The elves used the Sovyrian Stone, a powerful relic, to leave Golarion. Treerazer attempted to corrupt the Sovyrian Stone, triggering the elves’ return. They fought and defeated Treerazer, reducing his domain in Kyonin to what is now Tanglebriar.
DC 25:
When Treerazer was defeated, he retreated to the Witchbole, a giant fortified thorn tree able to uproot and move about Tanglebriar at Treerazer’s command. Lesser demons commonly populate Tanglebriar, as do corrupted animals, fey, plant creatures, and vermin.
DC 30:
Types of greater demons commonly found serving Treerazer in Tanglebriar include hezrous, nalfeshnees, and vrocks. Creatures in the area can be corrupted by Tanglebriar’s influence in one of two ways: the vileness of the air, plants, and vermin spreads demon fever and sucks the vigor from living creatures; and centuries of exposure to Treerazer’s influence slowly corrupts animals, fey, plant creatures, and vermin, from the tiniest gnat to the most enormous arthropod. Corrupted creatures are more common in Tanglebriar than creatures that have not been corrupted.

Knowledge (planes)

DC 15:
Demons are chaotic evil outsiders originally from the Abyss, and Tanglebriar is one of their footholds on Golarion. The demon lord Treerazer is known as the Lord of the Blasted Tarn and worshipped by dark cults within Kyonin. Demons are known to be immune to electricity and poison, and resistant to acid, cold, and fire.
DC 20:
Tanglebriar’s corruption is patterned after Treerazer’s former Abyssal realm. Whether Treerazer has any connection to the Worldwound’s breach is unknown, but Tanglebriar’s reputation as a hotbed of demonic activity is known in the Abyss, and though there's no portal there, it serves as a beachhead for demonic forces.
DC 25:
Many of the plants in Tanglebriar exude poison, which the demons naturally ignore. Lesser demons are vulnerable to cold iron and good-aligned attacks, though greater demons typically resist all but the latter.
DC 30:
Although most demons are created in and by the Abyss, there are also rituals—typically lengthy—that can transform one or more mortal creatures into demons. If the ritual is interrupted early enough, the victims might escape transformation.

Based on Zaarah's knowledge, haste is indeed warranted. Kramac is happy to help rescue the elves. Not just to complete his mission for the society, but because it is right. Turning to General Tenasi, the ranger queries, "What can you tell us of these Uprooters? How can we best recognize them? I agree with Flyndyngylyn. We should be ready for immediate hostilities. I have numerous magics to employ before we teleport. How are we prepared for facing disease and poison?

I have one scroll of Communal Delay Poison and one scroll of Align Weapon at present. I heartily recommend Life Bubble as a solution to hostile environments. It's a little expensive since it's a 5th level scroll, but we could all chip in and buy a couple maybe? Quenly and Kindle can both cast it.

Before we teleport, Quenly will run through a buff routine including using Channel the Gift. Kramac, does Beak want a Greater Magic Fang? I can Channel the Gift Kindle's casting if you want.
