First some general information about the quests;
It's for level 1 characters only
A player who plays through one or more of the quests receives a Chronicle sheet for Into the Unknown, noting which specific quests he played. He can later play the rest of the quests in the series, earning greater rewards (see the Variable Rewards boon on the Chronicle sheet at the end of this series). If the player created his own 1st-level character, he applies the Chronicle sheet to that character. If he instead used one of the 1st-level Starfinder Society regenerated characters, he can apply the Chronicle sheet to a 1st-level Starfinder Society character. If that character gains XP from another Chronicle sheet, he can no longer earn additional rewards for that character for playing the other Into the Unknown quests.
Into the Unknown can be replayed for credit, but the credit must be applied to a different 1st-level character each time.
No boon slots are available for Into the Unknown (I still think race boons are allowed, but the scenario itself doesn't mention it) - you can still earn fame/influence for a faction of your choosing though.
I'm running this so people have a chance to try the new options from the Characters Operation Manual (but you don't have to use anything from there if you don't want to) and since this features 2 space ship combats I thought it would also be a good way to see how the new spaceship roles (could) effect space combat in SFS
Also please fill in slide 4. It's a good check to see if I gave everyone access to the slides and you'll be able to see and edit the maps later.
I have a skittermander boon...so I am going to eventually make aSkittermander vanguard or biohacker (I REALLY don't want to think of a Skittermander witchwarper....shudder). I can make it for this game, but I just don't want to be the 3rd of a specific class for this game...so if people have a firm idea on one of both of those, I can use some of the new 'modifications' to a character (might try out my idea for an aeon throne run character (a ysoki mechanic.......should be SFS legal)).
So...basically if nobody wants to do a vanguard or biohacker, I will do one...otherwise I will make a new level 1 character with some of the alternate class abilities.
Hi folks. I PM'd Revvy earlier, but my wife was interested in trying out a PbP game. She's played quite a bit of Starfinder Society (~40 scenarios and is a one-nova GM IIRC) but hasn't done PbP before, so this game will be her introduction to the format.
To Jim's question, she's currently putting together a ghoran biohacker with a boon she got for GMing at a con. Additionally, I was planning on putting together a vanguard of some sort. I'm not sure what Farol's running, obviously, but that's the class situation here.
Small adjustment to the no boon slots being available bit, seems I was using the old download from before some things got updated. The current rule is;
No boon slots, except a Personal boon that grants access to a new playable race or a similar permanent ability, are available for Into the Unknown
Glad to see my memory was correct on being allowed to play other races.
Also the gameplay thread is open in case someone wants to dot in to keep track of new posts (post something and delete the post if you don't want to clutter up the gameplay tread if your not going to post something in character)
Hey guys! Just wanted to thank you for letting me play with you! This is my first play-by-post experience, but I've been playing pathfinder/starfinder for about 7 years now... so I know general game rules and things. Please be patient with me as I learn the ins and outs of text based play. I am also a terrible speller - so apologies in advance!
Thanks AFlashInTime for helping me get started!
Looking forward to playing with all of you!!

@Maire; if you don't worry about my spelling I'm not going to be bothered by yours ;). I'm pretty terrible at spelling, mostly names (but most fantasy names don't make it easy for someone to spell those properly either)..so if the name of a NPC suddenly changes that's most likely because I forgot how to spell it and not some deeper indication of the criminal masterminds disguise skill slipping ;)
Hey there, hey @Maire good to have you at this table.
With regards to PC I was also thinking of Vanguard ;D But I am happy to change for something else. However, I am also happy to be the 3rd Vanguard in the team ;) My idea for the PC is to have an android cyberpunk that would be more of a hitter than a thinker ;) But I can reconsider.
With regard to spelling, I am far from being the spelling expert. I have even a theory that Eloritu changes the amount of 'm''s in the word amount whenever I write it ;) For that purpose, I use Grammarly as a chrome plugin which fixes some of the issues. What is funny is that I also use it for work and sometimes it sends me reports congratulating me of using most unordinary words ;) It also displays an icon to express in what 'mood' is what I write. So whenever I post about attacking, cutting heads etc the icon indicates fear or horror :D Makes me laugh all the times ;)
A side note: between 18th of January and 9th of Feb I will be backpacking through Mexico without access to internet, so I will be out of some missions. Due to that I would prefer to not be some crucial role in starship combat, unless you are fine with botting me for an extended duration (if you need that given role that I was performing).
Just throwing it out there;
Since Oz and Choppy haven't responded on whether or not they want to join for this game (yet), do you guys want me to open recruitment for 1-2 more people or are you fine with the 4 of you?
I haven't played/GM-ed this with the 4 player adjustment yet so I'd fine with just 4 players just to see how that alters a run.
And if it turns out that nobody wants to have a build specially suitable for starship combat I think it's within the rules to just not play one or both of the spaceship combats - for reduced rewards if you want to have the game reported and not wait till later to play the remaining parts of the quests - and there shouldn't be any issue with a party of 3 vanguards and a biohacker (or 2 vanguards/2 biohackers) doing the other encounters ;)
Yeah, pretty much. I will throw together a character on Monday. I have a few other unusual race boons besides Skittermander...so I might think of an Embri...or a Phentomite...Maraquoi or Nuar...or Dragonkin (though I have to have bonded partner for that).
I am starting to lean towards my mormalaw (maybe sp...don't have it in front of me ATM) Envoy Ace Pilot who's gestures/facial tic/body language states his name is 'water that agitates repeatedly'......But everybody calls him 'Wash' for some reason. He likes Hawaiian shirts.
Probably (still looking) going to have Envoy Combat Expertise...probably in either Culture or Sense Motive...
Been wanting to build this for a while. Lucas Servideo (if you know who I am talking about) has the miniature almost done. So probably should stretch out the character...and test out some of the new Envoy abilities allowed from the Operations Manual.
Hellih is ready, I am using my newly got:
Possessed Augmentation (Personal Boon): Either before or after joining the Starfinder Society, you received a prosthetic
limb to replace one lost in a prior accident. You acquired the limb under dubious circumstances, and it’s never worked right
since you got it. The Society performed a magical scan of the augmentation, which revealed a spirit stuck within the limb
that was somehow bound to the augmentation prior to its installation. A capricious presence survives within the limb, its
exact background and nature something you can determine.
Benefit: You gain a free prosthetic limb to replace a limb you’d previously lost during the course of an adventure.
Otherwise, you can start a new character with this free prosthetic limb already attached. You must slot this boon after
acquiring this possessed limb. While this boon is slotted, you suffer from the penalty listed below, depending on which
limb was replaced. This penalty lasts until you either complete the tasks listed below, remove the affected limb, or pay to
have a new replacement limb installed. If you replace the limb, then you can cross this boon off the sheet.
The penalty for hand is -1 to initiative and -1 to attack rolls.
During this scenario I will not try to mark any of the tasks to lift the penalities. I want to get a sense how it feels to have the arm.
The Mormalaw didn't work out....it just didn't feel right.
I decided--since I really want to try a new class--to do Witchwarper. It will be done in a few hours.
I feel your pain. I never 'felt' races that were that extreme;) So I am always glad when one plays them as it gives me a perspective on such PC's ;)
Good luck with the witchwarper.

Well...Bribruon is done. Brian for short.
I will say this....I felt the Witch Warper playtest was ehh at best....made a level 1 to test back when. After making this character....ehhh. I think they really nerfed it worse by making Infinite Worlds requiring a spell sacrifice.....oh well. Maybe I am wrong.
|1 person marked this as a favorite.|
Nods...it was a Nerf. Again, I don't know why...I did report that I felt out of the 3 new classes it was the weakest..at least I felt so. It is likely weaker than any Mystic in the core book, even with the interesting Paradigm shifts. I am certain they read all of it, but I wonder if others thought it was too powerful (I didn't get to try a level 7 Witch Warper...wanted to, but the game got cancelled). I am willing to give it a shot though now that it is offical. Worst case I rebuild the character into something else before level two.
@Revvy and folks. Sorry for spamming, when thinking of Hellig the mechanic I come up with the backstory as I described it, and then you took us through junkyard and pipetown. I decided it is a good opportunity to jump on the opportunity and write a humungous post ;)
If you felt bored half-way sorry for that. It felt good to write it.
I just realized that not everyone has played with me as a GM before (or in a pbp game before) and I didn't post my normal "so you know what you get into when playing with me bit".
I can't find my normal entire post to copy&paste quickly so a sort of summary;
I'll roll initiative for everyone (if everyone rolls for themselves we'll most likely) start combat a day later.
Since everyone can delay until everyone else I normally go with the order in which people post instead of their actual place in initiative, this makes it easier for people posting later to act on what's happened/has been posted before. If you want to wait till something specific happens just post I'll delay till X happens or I move there and then ready to hit enemy B when I get a flank/someone make it flatfooted, etc and if your readied action includes a die roll please include it inside a spoiler block so we can put it in once it triggers.
I'm sure I'm missing something(s), so if you have any questions please fee feel free to ask
I like to use additional images to build the atmosphere where possible when the group seems to enjoy it and it's not just a bunch of people rolling dice and going through things fast. I haven't figured out how to do it with space combat yet though (other then a link to youtube clips with starship explosions/battles sometimes ;)
Since this combat is going to be over a lot sooner then I thought..what do you guys want to try for your next quest?
The recommendation from the scenario is to run them in order, so the next one would be a Space combat one. But we can skip that one (and possibly try it later) if we don't want to do starship combat right now and go for the one after that.
I think because of Farol/Hellih's schedule on vacation that they should determine if they want a space combat or some other quest part.....
I am fine with what ever...and once the 'holiday' season stops (i.e. Wednesday) I should be back to a normal posting schedule. Family meetings/parties are all fun...but they are exhausting.
I couldn't agree more with the family meetings/parties being exhausting.
With regards to space combat, I honestly do not mind. I like space combat, however I think that we would have a hard time staffing spaceship roles.
I think COM make a good job allowing some classes to do something on a spaceship, but you still need a pilot and gunners which means high dex pc with ranks in piloting or BAB. With 4 PC team, I am not sure if we want to go space combat. I let others comment.
Hellih can be an engineer(+9)/gunner(+4)/pilot(+7)
Revvy, I'm fine trying the next quest (a Starship combat), just to see how it goes.
Out of the old starship roles (need to look up the new ones), Kaixik:
-has no Engineering
-has no Piloting
-has no Computers
-has no Charisma-based skills (and a negative charisma)
-has a BAB of +1 and a Dex mod of +2, so... +3 gunner! Also known as a pretty mediocre gunner.
They do have a Mysticism of +4. Maybe this is helpful now, somehow.
As another aside, if we're close enough to the end of quest #1 (since we're allowed to do this with "Into the Unknown"), I was going to use Kaixik in another 1-4 at my local gaming store Monday evening (which will save me 2+ hours making a biohacker). Technically, I believe Kaixik would get a chronicle for the first quest, go do the second adventure, and the come back to complete the rest of the quests, but I'm totally fine just playing Kaixik as a level 1.0 character and then hopping back in.
That's a long way of saying I'd prefer we not start starship combat/Quest 2 until Tuesday-Wednesday, but I figure we still have a little wrapping up to do in Quest #1.
As a final aside, I really have no idea how to roleplay a vanguard. Like solarians have this cool cosmic energy vibe thing, but they have an entire race/culture (Kasathas) and lots of lore dictating sort of how they would stereotypically act. Vanguards likewise manipulate the forces and energies that embody the decaying of the universe itself, but (maybe I haven't read it yet) there's no real corresponding lore or culture that epitimizes them. So I'm left with trying to RP a gastropod that essentially fetishizes strict control of their own emotions to the point of always wearing a mask, who has this innate, mystical understanding of the forces of the cosmos through their (not intellect, not common sense, not force of personality, but) constitution (which I don't have a cultural/racial reference for, other than dwarves? maybe?)... Half of the time I'm kind of at a loss to imagine how a vanguard, let alone an embri vanguard, would respond to a given situation. I'm not sure playing a more typical race would make it much better, either.
That's a long way of saying Kaixik's personality might change as we go along, or if you meet them on future adventures.
with regards to playing Kaixik on tuesday-wednesday.
Unfortunatelly Quest rules say:
".. earning greater rewards (see the Variable Rewards boon
on the Chronicle sheet at the end of this series). If the player
created his own 1st-level character, he applies the Chronicle sheet
to that character. If he instead used one of the 1st-level Starfinder
Society pregenerated characters, he can apply the Chronicle
sheet to a 1st-level Starfinder Society character. If that character
gains XP from another Chronicle sheet, he can no longer earn
additional rewards for that character for playing the other Into
the Unknown quests."
With regards to Vanguard RP: yeah, what you describe pushed me away from creating such PC. At first, I wanted to ignore the whole forces of the world, and describe simply a melee character who hits unusually hard especially after he is being hit.
Boo. Looks like I'll be doing the "create an identical character and retrain later" tonight. Although technically it won't be an embri because that race boon is used. So slightly different.
So if I interpret everything written so far correctly - and there's a decent chance here I'm not so please correct me if I'm wrong - we still haven't decided the quest we'll try after the first one.
I think we'd have:
HK as a pilot (which is pretty important to have) +7
Kaixik as a gunner with +3
Sonomi as a second gunner (or captain) with +2 (I don't think there's a better role she could fill?)
Bribruon as a science officer using mystics +6
Which isn't even that bad. And there's a 4 player adjustment.
Up to you guys, the thing with starship combat is that it could take pretty long depending on die roles and we have 8-9? days before HK is leaving on holidays.
So my suggestion would be to try to do the other 2 encounters and then you can NPC him (HK) in for the spaceship combat (if you decide to not just skip those)
@Revvy I am fine with that ordering. With regards to holidays I am going at 18th of Jan (20 days from today including 4 days of weekends so 16 business days including 1st of January ;)).
We have roughly a week before Hellih is on vacation so I suggest we try the starship combat with a little bit of a twist.
The first one can be a bit of slog of just throwing die rolls over and over so let's play that one for 2-3 rounds/days and then I'll fast forward it with a cinematic explanation of how you guys prevail. The scenario seems to assume you guys win and doesn't offer an option on what happens when you loose....soooo, you're going to win - after all, it already happened in the past ;).
Then we'll do the final starship combat so Hellih can take part in the first few rounds of combat (which from personal experience tend to be the most fun) and after that we'll bot him in till the end.
If everyone could list their reporting info here I can send out the Chronicles and report the game after that.
Faction you want to represent/get fame for this scenario:
My suggestion on the facing of the enemy ship is facing mostly away from us (so, if we look at the map N is up...we are facing NW...they should not be facing us...maybe W or NW....).
Name: Jim Crase
Character Name: Bribruon Malidingeafront
SFS Number 56565-712
Faction: Wayfinders (I want him to go Manifold Host...just need to get a boon for that....sigh).
Character Name: Hellih
Faction: Second Seekers (Jadnura)
And I agree with what Bribruon Suggeste, for them to be NW, so that we approach them from behind.
Thank you Sonomi! It was a pleasure to play with you.
Thank you Revvy for gray Gm ing and Bribruon and Kalxik it is always a pleasure to play with you. I enjoyed our a lot! I am sorry for some odd my short and dry posts, I could have done better.
See you after the vacation!
I moved us...we should still be able to shoot our front (and starboard) side at their starboard shields. Their starboard weapons can hit us.
Explanation; I was able to post a line or 2 for my games the past 2 days but I didn't have the time to post anything bigger. Like what's needed for a round of starship combat for which I needed to look up multiple things as a GM.
Just to inform you; It might happen a few more times (depending on how long this is going to take). I expect not being able to post a round of starship combat again next Thursday and then a few times in the week(s) after that, but overall I think I should be able to keep to a post a day.
Well, that was it for this run.
I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. I had fun even though part of the last star ship combat confused me a few times as I lost track of turn order (or which ship was which ;)
I still need Kaixik but I'll start on the Chronicles tomorrow and hopefully get them out to you somewhere next week (depending on when I have access to a scanner/printer)
I think I forgot to ask if anyone has a dayjob they want to roll for, so if anyone has one feel free to roll.
Thanks for running, Revvy!
Name: Dan Schultz
Character Name: Kaixik
SFS number: 8601-709
Faction you want to represent/get fame for this scenario: SS (LE)
Day job: Mathematician: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Thanks for running Revvy. This scenario might be kinda linear, but it still is a wonderful one to check out how a character can work in different situations. You did a lot of wonderful 'adding' commentary to the baddies which is always great to see. Makes the game somewhat different each time.
Sonomi, nice to meet you, and I hope you had a great time on pbp. Hope to see you around with this (or another) character.
Same to you Kaixik...hope to see you around the pbp games. Been fun seeing what a vanguard can do (and especially an Embri...now I have some ideas on what to do with my embri boon).
HK, always great to play a game with you. Keep in touch if you see another you want to run together. Maybe eventually you can catch up to Baragh and Farol/Baragh can run the sniper's run together again!
My apologies for the delay on getting the chronicles out.
I ran into some issues - both technical and time.
But if I did everything correctly you should be able to find your chronicles here
Please check if everything is correct (I've been known to make mistakes before).
@Hellih; are you sure your character number is 701?
I'll keep the thread open till Hellih returns from his vacation so he can read what happened after he left and he can read through the conclusion and after that I'll close it so it's gone from your active list.
I'll take a break from GM-ing till I get my normal rhythm back so maybe I'll see you'll all around later. You've been a great group to run a game for.
Thanks for waiting for me with closing the game, please give me 2 more days, as tomorrow i can download the chronicle onto my PC as now I am still using only phone.
I second the praises. I really enjoyed playing with you all. Sonomi, great first game. Kaixik - that was some cool Vanguard slime ;).
And Jim awesome Whichwarper. Your gnomes insight into different planes was a great RP flavor for this PC. I enjoyed him a lot.
Revvy - Yeah 701, this is my retrofitted first PC. My initial 'great' RP idea was not that great and I shelved this PC. And here I decided to use him.
With regards to the game. I actually like this quest from the story point of view. I really loved the missing couple of hours approach that you took to explain the different order. Given the wierd PC's that we got it could have been anything (from Sonomi drugs spreading in a ship, to Jim's Whichwarper). Another great game, and I am so glad that I was able to play almost all of it.
Jim - give me few days and I will start looking for a game to play with you
