Erix sighs "I can't stop thinking about how to save Sebastian. I thought if we tracked down the Warforged..." he trails off "I don't know, we need political pull to do this."

Action 2
"Do you think he has something that could help Sebastian?" Erix's eyes light up "If a high ranking member of the church was prepared to go on the record as a witness - that could make a difference, right?"

Phin raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. "So all of this," and she motioned in a circle encompassing Erix's body - the bruises and the cuts, "is because you've been thinking. If you say so, Cub. If you say so. Just be careful."

Action 2:

Phin looked skeptical, "I highly doubt someone of his position is reaching out to help someone else. More likely he needs something from us...like a heart or a brain or maybe just a kidney." Seeing the others, especially Erix, visibly deflate at her realistic view of the world she added half-heartedly, "But yes, it could definitely make a difference if he's contacting us to help."

Was the letter addressed to Sebastian specifically, or the agency, or all of us?

Actually, no names were mentioned at all in the message itself, and the cover letter was addressed to the agency.

When Alua received the letter, she put it aside to pass on to Sebastian. Almost a full minute went by before she realized what she'd done. Sovereign below! That's for me to open!

Feeling slightly guilty, as if she were cheating in class, Alua slid the letter opener under the flap and carefully extracted the letter. As she read it, a frown line appeared on her forehead. Our request? For an audience? Surely if the Boss had requested something like that, it woudl have gone through me? Looking back at the envelope, she saw that Sebastian's name wasn't actually on it. One of the others? Puzzled, she put it aside until Phin came in.

Quote:
Phin couldn't stop yawning as she stumbled gracefully into the office the next morning. Her gig at The Forlorn Elk had gone particularly late the night before so she was running on three hours sleep. She had just finished stuffing a pastry into her mouth as she entered. Alua was standing behind her desk reading something, an excited look on her face. "Did we catch a case? What is it?"

Shaking her head, Alua said, "Not a case. I don't think so, anyway. Did you ask for this?" She handed the note to the elf.

Her frown of confusion deepening, Alua said, "But why would it say that we asked for an audience, if he's reaching out to help? Why would it say we asked for an audience at all, since none of us did?"

Trying to remember what she knew of the higher echelons of the church, she said, "If he's running for High Huntsmaster, that's a big deal. Like a really big deal. And he seemed to have lots of folk on his side, judging from that group on the bridge. But that other guy had lots of folk too. Maybe Werem needs our help with it. We should definitely go. And we should get Baran on the way."

Where is this guy? Is the university on route, or do we need to send a message for him to meet us there?

The main temple to Balinor is located in Pinnacle (Temple district, Upper Tavick's Landing), while the Morgrave University is in Upper Menthis Plateau. There is some fair distance between the two, but the University district is almost directly above you so you could say it's on the way. The timing is a bit rough, but if you don't waste too much time you can go collect Baran (actually finding him in the huge university isn't necessarily child's play either) and still get to the temple in time, if only just.

Erix recovered from the slump Phin's words had sent him spiralling in to. "Hmmm - Sebastian has a number of contacts in the Guard, doesn't he? Maybe... he got someone to put in a good word for him? Or take a message? Whatever it was - I think we have to go. Even if there isn't much chance" he looked at Phin "If we don't go, it'll haunt us."
"Alua, do you have details on Baran's address? We need to get there now, so he has time to dress up all resp'ec'able. Speaking of which, give me three minutes to wipe down and get a clean shirt."

When they were as respectable as they could be, Alua grabbed her notebook and they headed out. It still felt weird to be the one locking up behind them.

Aware of the time, they moved quickly to the public lift, and only had to wait a few moments for one to arrive. As the down-bound passengers disembarked, Alua had a brief flashback to the lift-crash she'd attended to...was it only two weeks ago? It felt like a year. Shuddering a bit, she moved away from the rail, completely aware how useless that was, should the lift fail.

Making their way to the University, Alua looked around with interest. So this is where Mother had hoped I'd end up. Everybody here looked so smart and studious; there's no way she and Chandra would have fit in here.

"This place is huge!" she said, after they'd walked around for a few minutes. Grabbing a passing student, she asked for directions to the residency adjunct the biology department.

The kind-faced elven boy did one better, and guided them there. Grateful, Alua tried to give him a coin for his troubles; there's no way they could have found it so quickly without a guide. However, the boy laughed and gestured to his rather expensive clothes. "Looks like you need it more than I do."

Harsh, but fair, she had to admit.

Luck was with them; their new coworker was in the common room by the main doors. "Baran! We have a job, but we need to be in Pinnacle at 11am! Let's move!"

Phin shook her head, long tendrils of blonde hair swaying, "Nope." She looked at Erix, "And I doubt Sebastian did either." She snorted, "It's probably the guy's way of asking for help. Deeming us worthy of his presence by doing us the favour of granting us an audience even though it's really him that needs help. Rich, influential people live in their own worlds and are often oblivious to how they affect others. If they only knew how damaging it was when others strive for what they have."

Erix wrote:

Phin nodded, changing the movement of her hair from a sway to a bob, "I agree. And knowing that they are a very superficial people, I'll change into my Courtier's outfit."

Phin gracefully moved through streets with Erix and Alua. She never had had any reason to go to the University campus. Students didn't own anything worth burglarizing and she definitely wasn't intrigued by spending days on end inside studying dusty old tomes. She was somewhat familiar with the taverns around the campus but she had gotten tired of being hit on by younger and younger boys who thought they were men that she eventually had found other places to play.

The elf was relieved when they finally found Baran because time was ticking away. She grinned when Alua ordered Baran to action. When the young man scrambled for his belongings she leaned over and whispered, "Nicely done, boss." Her voice returned to normal volume, "But if he's not out soon then I vote that Erix go in to motivate him to move faster."

Baran had been thinking of yesterday a lot. Phin, Alua, and Erix were something original - creatures of the 'real' world; a gateway to an exciting accidental life. His mind was drifting again. He would be back at the agency now if it weren't for a fear of seeming over-eager.

As poor consolation he had been in the common room for a full hour listening to an impromptu lecture, an argument really, being given by three senior students. They were in a heated discussion about the Galifar Code of Justice and the wording of a letter or marque in the acquisition of a Xen'drik blah blah BLAH blAH blah. The boy's eyes were full glazed over. The speakers had wandered so far afield in a rhetorical discussion on finder's rights that two effects were invoked: 1) Baran could not remember the original purpose of the debate; and, 2) the discussion only served to keep a swath of listeners dumb so that the three seniors could hear themselves talk about how intelligent they are ... all suddenly interrupted by a shout from across the room.

Alua Riversong wrote:
"Baran! We have a job, but we need to be in Pinnacle at 11am! Let's move!"

He shot up from his seat to the pride touched stares of the suddenly quiet seniors. He gave them a 'too cool for this company' shrug and separated himself from the group. When he overheard Phin's comment about sending Erix in he got serious and hustled over.

"The Pinnacle? We really have to get a messaging system set up. Who's the client? ... Huntmaster Werem?! An audience??? Either Werem is too proud to say he requires the aid of a contractor he unknowingly agreed with Phin or he is keeping the purpose of our visit a secret from his own office.' Baraa was lost in thought the rest of the trip to the Temple District.

While not as grand a sight as the massive temple complex dedicated to the Host as a whole in Sovereign Towers, the Pavilion of the Host, the temple to Balinor in Pinnacle was still a sight to behold. And while most temples in Pinnacle served a mostly social and management role rather than provided access to ordained priests, the temple dedicated to the Sovereign of Horn and Hunt in the district catered to both needs. Your punishing timetable allowed you little time to gawk at the spectacle of the temple - indeed, once you found a clerk who could direct you to the right wing of the building you were met with a pointedly disapproving frown of Huntmaster Werem's secretary as you arrived with only minutes to spare.

Not that it meant you were ushered in immediately - the middle-aged upper-priest ordered you to sit down to await the Huntmaster's pleasure as he returned behind his desk to continue working down the pile of paperwork in his "in" tray. 10 minutes later, though, the door leading to the inner office opened and a pair of well-dressed men bowed their way out, nodded to the secretary, favored you with a quick glance of mixed interest and speculation and went on their way, starting a hushed conversation with each other as soon as the door closed behind them.

"Huntmaster Werem will see you now," the secretary said after a few moments - likely giving his master some time to sort out his thoughts before the next set of visitors. He rose, walked to the door, gave it a single knock and opened it enough to announce the bishop's 11 o'clock appointment was here. You could hear a strong voice murmuring an answer and then the secretary was opening the door to usher you in.

The Huntmaster's reception room was larger than your entire office, and lavishly furnished and decorated with paintings and statues, sinfully soft rugs and boldly colored tapestries, all expertly positioned to speak of wealth without quite crossing the line to overindulgence or bad taste. The room had groups of chairs and sofas for more intimate and less official visits, but your attention was drawn to the large desk at the back of the room and the almost throne-like chair behind it, where the Huntmaster sat, observing you as you took in the room and his own presence.

Werem was a powerfully built man, perhaps in his late thirties, his hair and full beard black without a touch of grey, his green eyes bright and calculating. He didn't rise to greet you but instead waved you to the tall-backed chairs arranged before his desk, and you noted the rings in his fingers matched the embroidery of his magnificent vestments, themselves heavy enough with gold thread to feed a family of five for months.

"Greetings, greetings," he said as the secretary closed the door behind you. "I do apologize for the bit of subterfuge in my message - I do get a lot more people petitioning for a moment of my time than I call in people I need to see, and the subject of this meeting is of a somewhat delicate nature... I trust I can count on your discretion?"

Phin took in the restrained opulence of Huntmaster Werem's office. She couldn't help but wonder what kind of a spectacle her mother would have made of herself should she have been the one meeting the Huntmaster, especially when the elf got a good look at the man's physique. Her mother would have been drawn to the power and influence like a moth to the flame and would have shamelessly flaunted herself for it. The thought of how upset her mother would be should she see Phin now brought a small smile to her lips.

Phin ducked her head, partly to hide her surprise at his almost down-to-earth demeanour and partly to show respect for his position. Instead, Phin stands quietly while waiting for Alua to speak for them and to be invited to sit.

Baran delayed so that he could look at the exterior of the temple for as long as possible. His father had meant for the boy to study engineering so, of course, he avoided the subject altogether. He only regretted this when he saw unfamiliar Sharn architecture. He understood, though, that their razor thin punctuality was due to him so he followed along apologetically.

His earlier contrition to his new friends didn't mean Baran appreciated the upper-priest's umbridge however. He could feel that familiar urge to wheedle back. So after being shown a seat and once the middle-aged man started his paperwork, the boy made a loud coughing noise. After being glowered at, he let the priest get back to work before letting out a quick, "Very sorry!" to interrupt again. He tried to fain clumsy innocence but noticed his pettiness wasn't getting traction with his new co-workers, so he stopped.

This was in time to mark the well-dressed visitors and Baran tried to mark them well should they meet again.

He followed the others into the Huntmaster's office and noticing that Phin missed the gesture to sit he moved to a chair, bowing in the manner of the well-dressed men and muttered "Your Excellency", and sat. He remained quiet and looked to Alua.

Werem wrote:

Baran listened to Werem's question and said nothing but gave a flicker of a grin to show that discretion was understood.

Alua shot Baran a frown as the boy coughed loudly the second time. I hope he isn't sick. I should check him out when we're done here. However, the coughing fit ceased, so maybe he just had allergies.

Entering the Huntmaster's office, Alua's eyes widened in appreciation. Now THIS is an office! Taking one of the high-backed seats, she pulled out her notebook and pen, crossed her legs, and prepared to listen carefully and take notes.

Quote:
"Absolutely your Excellency." Erix made a point of learning about dangers when he moved to a new area. With his sudden lack of shadow the priesthood in Sharn jumped way up his threat list, and he'd spent some time finding out how they worked. Realising he'd accidentally taken the lead he deferred to Alua. "Right boss?"

Alua actually looked behind her for Sebastian before she realized that Erix was talking to her. Wait! I'm the boss now! Handing the notebook to Baran, she then turned back to the Huntmaster and said, "Discretion is the cornerstone of our business, Your Excellency," she said, repeating a phrase she'd heard Sebastian say more than once. "Nothing that you say here will leave this room. Well, other than our office, but only when nobody else is there."

Blushing a bit, she tucked a wisp of hair behind her ear, and said, "Please, speak freely, and tell us how we can help you."

"Good," Werem grunted, nodding, his attention now focused on Alua as she had been identified as the person in charge. "Let's get to the matter at hand, then. You may be aware that I am currently involved in an election campaign, running for the position of High Huntsmaster? Yes, I see that you do. Good. Unfortunately, it would seem my main opponent is fighting tooth and nail for every vote. Thus, I decided I had to up the ante to ensure my victory."

He stood up and began pacing behind his desk as he spoke. "At great expense, I funded an expedition to explore Xen'Drik and acquire a suitable... material for a certain rite. The rarer and more valuable the focal object, the more fame - and in this case, votes - arranging it would grant me. And with what I had intended to offer, there would be no chance my only real opponent could outdo it, certainly not in the time we have before the election day."

"The expedition itself succeeded better than I could have hoped for. The team outdid themselves, returned safely to Stormreach and secured the cargo for transport to Sharn. Even the ocean crossing went without a hitch, but when my local agents accepted the cargo and began transporting it to safekeeping..." Werem grit his teeth in obvious irritation. "Those idiots went and lost it. To some damn gangster in the Fallen, of all things! It simply beggars belief, all the steps deemed truly risky went so well, only for the last, most simple thing to fail so spectacularly."

The Huntmaster paced for a moment longer, seething in silence, before stopping to look at you. "And that's where you come in. Obviously, I won't trust the survivors of the transport team to find their own ass with two hands, let alone try to retrieve the object, not after this disaster. And I can't allow the news of their failure to be known - trying for the ritual and then admitting I had lost the all-important focus of it would be a disaster at this stage. So. I need you to find and retrieve the object and move it - intact, naturally - to a warehouse I have secured for my use in the Stores. And quietly, so the knowledge of this little... hiccup... will remain buried."

Please don't feel the need to channel ALL conversation through Alua, as that will limit the chances for the rest of you to interact... there are four people to this team, after all, not just one ;^) It might make sense for one person to do the talking but I don't think it'd make for entertaining RP.

Alua nodded as the Huntmaster spoke, as she had seen the boss do before. When he had finished, she waited a moment, then said, "Yes, we can certainly look into this for you. And as I said, our discretion is guaranteed. What is this object that we will be looking for?"

"What you are looking to retrieve..." Werem said, picking up a heavy book from his table, opening it at a bookmarked page and handed the volume to Alua - a beautifully illustrated bestiary. "... is this." A single picture drawn in bold colors dominated the page the Hunrmaster wanted you to see.

Picture

GM rolls:

Baran, Knowledge Arcana: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

Baran recognizes the creature in the picture as a Kamadan, a fierce hunter native to Xen'drik, although with that roll you recall few actually useful details. Feline, magical beast, great ambush predator, prefers rocky terrain as well as deep woods. The book offers little to add except the picture - it seems to be focused on legends rather than facts.

Also, funny coincidence - Fallen happens to be the district Alua's workplace / home is also located, but we can assume it's in what's considered a respectable area for the dangerous lower district, closer to the still working lifts.

Baran was listening carefully and leaned in when Werem mentioned the power of artifacts. Did he mean the artifact would gain him favour and notoriety? or did he mean the ritual had the power to influence minds? Any hunch?

orate in place of sense motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
k.religion or k.local or k.nobility ... Werem's main opponent?: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Baran couldn't keep quiet with the reveal of the 'artifact' and stepping forward with a slow leaking gasp, "A Xen'drik Kamadan ! A hunter-predator. I don't know much about them but ... it may still be in Fallen. I don't know the district well but an area with any sort of collapse might simulate its' preferred rocky terrain ...", his voice trailed off as he went deeper into thought, "specially if it included some overgrowth or an old garden? Does your opponent know anything about your expedition? Is this a race? Do we have to capture the Kamadan? I mean, does it need to be alive??" Baran looked up, his heart was racing a little, and he gathered some presence of mind. With a grin, "My apologies your Excellency. One question at a time, perhaps? What do you suspect your opponent knows?

"Eagerness at this point is commendable," Werem said, forcign himself to calm down and take his seat. "The kamadan is indeed still in the Fallen - my own divinations have assured me of that. But as to how long that state of affairs continues..."

"And if that son of a goat Feeson knew about this, he'd have already announced my humiliation to the world," the priest snarled. "That is another reason why this matter needs to be concluded quickly. And the third is the timing of the ritual. Actually, tomorrow would have been the most auspicious day for it - the last night Dravago is still full - but it was still be performed for the next five days. The final preparations take some time, unfortunately. Thus, I need my offering back by no later than tomorrow evening, or the best I can hope is to accept my losses and hide all evidence of my attempting it."

"And I do most certainly need the beast back alive, and preferably unharmed - hunting it, a great hunter in its own right, is the whole point of the ritual with which I will ensure my victory."

A bit of Eberron trivial... Dravago is one of the planet's still surviving 12 moons, and the Herder's Moon is mystically tied to beasts of the wild as well as to Risia, The Plain of Ice.

What's the protocol for payment in this situation? I'm not sure if we should be setting our price, or asking what the job is worth to him. If we set the price, what should we be asking?

Well, you don't get any extra details with a roll like that, but for you, a local, it'd be common knowledge to at least be aware of the Ravers, something between a gang, tribe and a cult. Few live to tell the tale about coming into contact with them.

As for the price... you certainly have never hunted a monster in the bowels of the city, let alone trying to capture one without hurting it. So you'd have little idea what you should ask. But it'd be professional to agree on price and terms before accepting a case. You could always wait and see what he's going to offer you... and I expect there's any number of other questions you might want to ask as well :-)

I'm assuming that Phin should know something about what goes on in the Fallen district from working with Mamma Ellie? Does she still need to roll k.local for info?

It all began to make sense for Phin as Werem shared his tale. Everyone wants their indiscretions and failures swept under the rug but the rich and influential were the only ones with the resources to make it happen. Not that this situation was Werem's personal failure but it would make him seem less god-like should it come to light. Considering it would be beneficial to be friendly with someone of his position, Phin was in complete favour of taking the case.

The picture of the kamadan gave the elf pause. It looked like the stuff of nightmares - a leopard and snakes? What did it do, bite you with a mouth full of murder hornets? "Divinations? So you know where in Fallen your offering is? Which gangster took it? And when you say lost it, was it stolen or did they actually misplace it? And if it was stolen, did they know what they were stealing when it was taken?"

We can't really discuss our fee in front of Werem but I would suggest the Alua ask for our flat fee (similar to what we got from the Sergeant) per day + danger pay + a small cushion for expenses :)

"I know it is in the Fallen, and not too far from where it was lost, but I can't pinpoint something I'm not personally familiar from across the City any closer than that," Werem grunted, seemingly irritated he should make an explanation that highlighted any lack of power of his. "And I said it was lost, not stolen - why would some flea-ridden savages steal a wild predator? No, what happened was that my local team wanted to transport the cage through Fallen to get to the warehouse without drawing attention... from anyone who mattered, that is. They assured me they were aware of the territories of the local scumbags and avoided courting disaster that way, but either they were wrong about that part as well, or the gangs had expanded their reach."

"The survivors of the clash said they were ambushed on the road, and during the battle, the Kamadan woke up - at this point, I wouldn't be surprised they had forgot to re-dose it with the tranquilizer on top of all their other mistakes - bust out of its cage and rushed into nearby ruins, savaging anyone who got in its way."

"The ambush too place close to the old Colrac Hall, and I would assume the beast remains there - it'd be the new apex predator of the area, and the local gangsters would likely provide it with a suitable food source."

The boy was looking earnestly at Werem, 'Hmmm, how severe is 'His Excellency' on failure or perhaps the ambush itself was very effective?'
"Is the leader of your local team available for some questions?", Baran asked cautiously. "It would be helpful to know more about the ambush. Is that good enough to know basics of Godsgate becoming Fallen and the collapse of The Glass Tower?

Baran 'Elmswright wrote:

Plenty. The fall of the Glass Tower is certainly common knowledge, as well as the fact that the district went from bad to rock bottom after the dust settled. As to how or why the floating tower fell... there are plenty of theories but zero real answers. As the war was still going strong, there plenty of enemies to blame.

Baran 'Elmswright wrote:
"Is the leader of your local team available for some questions? It would be helpful to know more about the ambush."

"Unfortunately," Werem grunted, sounding anything but, "the team leader was the first to die during the ambush - a crossbow bolt into his throat, I believe. I have already had the survivors of the team... debriefed... but they had little of use to tell. Apparently they were too busy running for their lives to even get a decent count of the enemies."

"As to where to deliver the beast once you have retrieved it..." the Huntmaster opened a deck drawer, picked something up and put it carefully on the table. "This case contains five doses of the tranquilizer agent the hunters used to incapacitate the Kamadan, and to keep it subdued during the transport. Once you locate the beast, you it. I have another team ready with a cage to take the beast the rest of the way, provided you can carry it to the rendezvous point - a few city blocks from the Colral Hall. They have secured it, and if they know what's good for them, they will see that it remains so until you are finished with your part."

"And you will deliver the Kamadan to them alive. If it, by some chance, dies by your hand..."

No need to roll for Sense Motive to figure out that declining the mission after you have been briefed this much about it would not be a good survival strategy ;^)

"With respect, sir. Team leader first to drop. Hostiles in unanticipated locations in well-scouted territory. Tranquillisers wearing off at the wrong time. That's a lot of things going wrong in sequence. Sounds more like enemy action than coincidence."

Erix pauses, then pushes on "You said your opponent would have broadcast this to the world if they knew - and I'm sure you know best on that. My worry is that this is someone close to you, someone whose credibility is tied to yours, but wants you to suffer a problem - maybe so they can fix it at the last minute, maybe to use as blackmail. Might be that I'm paranoid - I don't move in your circles, sir. But if it isn't going to cost anything to bear that in mind, I suggest we assume there's a hostile in your organisation as well as the moles you already suspect."

"Any digging we do on this creature is going to attract attention. Even us just turning up there after talking to you could be risky - but I assume one of the reasons you picked us is because the boss" he indicates Alua "Is known to frequent that area." He thinks for a moment "If there is a turncoat in your organisation, best contingency is to have someone in the team we're to hand off to. Easy enough for that person to arrange for the creature to have an 'accident' after we deliver it. Hit it with a few more doses of the tranq, and claim we gave it an overdose, for example."

Erix reaches out for a tranquillizer "Though to be fair, I guess there is also the possibility the creature has developed a tolerance for the tranquillizer. If they'd been keeping it asleep on the trip, it would have had time to build up a certain level of immunity. We'll need to know details about the tranquilizer - what does are safe, how long it takes to ingest, how to preserve it and, crucially lethal dosage."

Right! Now I have to do the negotiating. Let's see... we got 300 Galifars for Ziki, and this one will probably be more dangerous. Though the enraged changeling had been plenty dangerous enough. Still, she'd been trained as a soldier, not a big game hunter. At least she was reasonably familiar with Fallen. I hope it's not anywhere near the Temple. The unfortunates who made use of the holy ground would be very vulnerable to a beast of that nature.

"Yes," Alua said, "I'm confidant we can bring the beast back, alive, by tomorrow evening. The cost will be 500 Galifars when we bring it back, plus a further 50 up front for expenses. And we definitely need to know more about the tranquilizer."

The elf's eyes narrowed slightly. With the way Werem said 'debriefed' made her wonder if they could truly be called survivors any longer. She noticed how he had side-stepped the request to speak with anyone involved in the confrontation and she had her suspicions that there was no one to speak with because dead men tell no tales. "I don't suppose the survivors mentioned during their briefing who attacked them? I'd be more interested in who did the attacking and why rather than the number."

Phin kept her eyes on Werem, trying to put as many pieces together as she could. She motioned at Erix, "My colleague has a point. Do you absolutely trust everyone you have securing the rendezvous point? Your Excellency, we do not want to obtain your offering only to lose it again to a team we have no control over."

"I trust they spoke the truth when they were questioned and denied any knowledge of outside involvement," he said grimly, touching his holy symbol with the tip of his fingers. "I guess I can't entirely discount the possibility someone arranged the assault, but if Feeson knew about this debacle, it wouldn't be like him to sit on the scoop. And he's the one with most to gain from my current... troubles. As to the team waiting to finish the transport... let us say their leader knows which side his bread is buttered. Not that he knows a thing about my involvement in his latest assignment - like with the first transport team, I arranged the contracts via trusted intermediaries. And I do mean trusted."

"Done!" the Huntmaster agreed immediately. "Do this right and you will also have a powerful patron on your side. Fail, or get my Kamadan killed..."

The poison is injury type, so blood contact is required. Onset time is two rounds, initial effect is intense drowsiness and secondary is unconsciousness. Happily, overdosing isn't a thing so you don't need to apply it one dose at a time, fearing double dose would kill the beast.

'He's serious?! This is all a 'Fait Accompli' before we were ever summoned. Produce the kamadan or be trampled.' A vague look of indignation shadowed Baran's face but he quickly understood the lack of paths before the group. He relaxed and grinned lightly. 'Everything is so easy in Morgrave. Keep your head down, find a mentor, and the world opens. This is why Professor Thorn wanted me to be out in the world. I must learn how the world works. His wisdom be my wisdom.'

Erix Thorn wrote:

Baran's eyes moved down and to the right like he was trying to look inside his own head, "Alua, perhaps the business is looking for new patrons? It would explain any future money changing hands, I assume the business is in need - at least in finding a pathway to higher profile jobs, and simple stories are the easiest to remember. It helps we are both in Tavick's. It is a leap from inquisitor to hunter, but not from cutthroat work in Sharn to the patron of the fight for survival in the natural order." He looked to Erix and then to Werem, "We should leave looking serious. We have not yet given His Excellency sufficient reason to invest 'as much' as we hoped. After all, we may need to meet again."

Phin's eyes narrowed slightly, was it just her or did he agree to that a bit too quickly? How much more money could they have gotten? Or was there another reason as to why he agreed immediately? The rogue quietly studied the man while details were finalized.

Turn 025 - Hunt for the Lost Kamadan

Game on!

Also, points for Erix for thinking about the beast building a resistance to the poison... that's not in the rules, but I did intend to make it happen. Well spotted in advance, might as well admit it at this point - the poison does still work, but not as well as expected. You can try to overdose the critter (using more poison than necessary did boost the DC) and while pretty much anything gets lethal at high enough concentration (even distilled water), your 5 doses aren't enough to worry about that.

Of course, there are other ways of subduing the beast, things you can do that Werem isn't aware of...

Cool! I just discovered kamadans in the 5e Tomb of Annihilation adventure, which I'm running for my kid's friends, now that we're done the starter set. Don't tell Fabian, but I'm warming up to 5e. And kamadans are cool! Scary but cool.

Alua was pleased as she left the Huntmaster. Being the boss is easy! I wonder why Sebastian struggled with it so much. Probably because he was such a grouch.

As soon as they were out of sight of the temple, she said, "What did you think? I did pretty good, right? 500gp, for less than 2 days work?"

Turning to Baran, she said, "Do you need to pick anything up from home, before we go back to the office?"

**

"I need to head to the office to change," Alua said, "and get my armour and stuff. This thing sounds way more dangerous than anything we usually get in the city." Truth be told, she was feeling quite nervous about facing it. Snakes coming out of its shoulders? Gross!

Alua will change out of her office frock, and into her soldier's clothes, armour, mace etc etc.

You'll get the 50g for expenses you asked from the secretary as he shows you out of the office, so feel free to spend it if there is some stuff you want.

Baran stopped in place as Alua posed her question, "I left my bow at the University ... should we split up and meet near Fallen somewhere? If you three need to make any purchases, a backup net or something to carry the captured Kamadan with, then I won't be too far behind. Timing seems of the essence. And what else should we do before going? Did someone mention contacts for the area? The creature isn't the only challenge to Fallen.", he shook his head a little, "The rush doesn't feel right. I wish we had some time to do some research."

Can anybody think of any gear we need to buy? The only thing I was thinking was an armour upgrade, but we don't have enough for that. Any potions or scrolls that would help?

How are we going to transport this thing? A net? A box? A net as a weapon costs 20 gp - we should probably buy one of those.

How much for a kamadan sized box? I assume a metal cage would be too pricey and too heavy.

Hmm... I'd think you'd have some serious trouble navigating the not-so-clear-and-pristine streets of Fallen carrying a cage or a box containing a 500lbs feline. Just moving the cat itself would be quite the challenge ;^) It would not be a bad idea to sort that bit out now when you are still in the upper wards, with easier access to resources money can buy (or rent). Of course, you won't have to move the beast very far, if the retrieval team is where it's supposed to be, and stays there while you hunt the cat...

Maybe a trap of some sort to momentarily disable it while we tranquilizer it?

HP 27/27, AC 11, Init +1, Perc +1 | F+3, R+3, W+3, CMB+4, CMD 15 | Spells 1: 6/6 | LoH 5/5

Let's meet up with the retrieval team right away, and see what sort of set-up they have for moving the creature. Maybe if we knock it out, they can come and help carry it away. Otherwise, probably a harness made out of ropes would do the trick to move it a small distance.

Alua nodded at Baran. "Let's meet at the lift near the Spirestorm temple. It's where I...work. It's relatively safe, compared to other parts of Fallen."

They waved goodbye to their newest team member, and hurried to the office. Along the way, Alua stopped and purchased a large, strong net, paying attention as the old dwarf proprietor showed her how to fold it properly for throwing. Returning to the others, she said, "I'm not sure about this. Wish I had time to learn how to throw it." Can anybody use exotic weapons?

It felt strange to don her armoured jacket again, as always, it felt like stepping back in time, back into the war. She shuddered, then straightened her spine. Her mace felt good in her hand, however. Solid. She slung her crossbow over her shoulder. Turning to Phin, she asked, "How long does the tranquilizer last once we put it on a weapon? Should we do that now, or wait until we see the kamadan?"

The lift dropped a long time before it came to the bottom. Fallen. Once Godsgate, the first temple district. First left to fall into disuse as the Temples moved up as the city grew in height. Then, torn apart by the fall of the Glass Tower. Now, haunted by Ravers spirits.

When the lift reached the bottom, Alua stepped off and glanced around. No immediate danger. The buildings were mostly intact here, with any obvious damage boarded up. A few merchants still operated nearby, selling basic quality essentials. A block away she could see the Spirestorm Temple, a spire of crystal from the Glass Tower still jutting from the roof.

When Baran arrived, she said, "Let's start there. I'll ask the priests if they've heard anything."

I can’t find actual rules about how long applied poison stays potent, but I’m thinking not indefinitely. So let’s say if you apply poison to a weapon and don’t use it within the hour at the very latest, it will be wasted. Also, there is that 1/20 chance of poisoning yourself when applying the stuff, unless you have a feat or class ability that negates it.

Alua’s coworkers welcomed her return and filled her in about recent news – most of which had no bearing on your current mission. They could verify the fact that the Ravers had increased their activity of late, although they still hadn’t ventured close to the temple. But the healers had treated plenty of those who had ran into the gangs and survived to tell the tale. It was difficult to make any sense of the feral and mentally unstable members of the gangs/tribes/cults known as Ravers, but it seemed the aptly named Blood Drinkers in particular were expanding their turf. Who or what had stirred up the tribe was anyone’s guess, but the results were felt by the residents of the district, and the fear that any advance by one tribe would shake the balance and incite the other tribes – the Night Stalkers and the Black Claws being the other two known ones… but not necessarily the only ones in existence – to follow suit to avoid being eclipsed by the Blood Drinkers.

Your friends were dismayed to say the least once they got the idea you intended to venture close to those new hotbeds of activity in the district and did their best to try and dissuade you from going. And once it became clear you were not to be deterred, offered their prayers to go with you, as well as warnings what areas and streets to avoid to not run into the Ravers.

***

Once you had finished your business in the temple, you trekked deeper into the wrecked district. With every street passed, there were fewer people to be seen, fewer stores still open. A couple streets from your destination, the streets became completely devoid of life and you began noticing the occasional bloodstain or sliver of bleached bone scattered amidst the rubble and refuse – perhaps evidence to the rumor that some Ravers were not against a bit of occasional cannibalism food was particularly scarce.

Despite the concerning findings, you reached your destination safely – an abandoned warehouse that took the lowest two levels of a tower a couple streets away from your final destination. Guards armed with crossbows had taken station near the door, and the weapons were promptly pointed in your direction as you approached, pointed slightly to the side once it became obvious you were not Ravers yourselves and finally lowered when you stated your business. The sentries let you in, one remaining behind while the other took a few minutes to lead you to their captain.

”You the retrieval team we have been waiting?” the captain asked, stepping over from where he had been leaning against the wall. ”About damn time – the sooner we can get the Dolurrh away from here, the better. The locals haven’t tried anything – not yet, at least – but the boys and girls can hear them screams, now and then, and are getting properly spooked.” The captain was a young man, of middling height, wearing a knee-length coat of chain mail and holding a long-bladed spear in his hands. ”Lukar Irvallo, at your service. Anything I can do to help? Besides coming with – we aren’t paid nearly enough to risk that.”

"I need to go home, get the really big armour. Maybe even grab a shield. Rope would be good. Chains as well, I suppose. If we can render this thing unconscious, I say we tie it up like a turkey, and put a bag over its... put bags over its heads. If it wakes up, we'll have a chance to put it back down. So, rope, and bags. "

He sighed a little "Dare say there's any number of spells that'd help us out here. Potions. Scrolls. All that. Not sure we have time to find any, though. Normally I'd want us to get an antitoxin - someone's going to poison themselves, I just know it - but if it only puts people to sleep I suppose it'll be okay. Baran hoofed it back to the university as quickly as he was able - but he was easily winded and always had been. He blamed it on being the son of an old man. He settled for a brisk walk.

When he reached Morgrave he didn't stop to talk which in moments seemed to classmates who merely wanted to chat on some recent news. He rushed up to his cell and grabbed his things. On the way out he paused and rushed to the library for a quick look - How does one build a proper travois? He cursed his refusal to go into engineering once more.

Baran showed up later than expected and he looked harried. He showed the others his sketch, "Can we scare up a little material and lashing before we get too far? It shouldn't be too expensive. Whatever people might be using for scaffolding on damaged buildings should work ... if anyone has bothered to do that much."

It was only after presenting his idea that Baran took a moment to give the area a good look. He made himself ready to go and followed Alua's lead.
