Maps and handouts

VC - Sydney, Australia

Hi all!

I'm keen for us all to try to post regularly (aim for once or more per weekday and, at least once on weekends). Whilst adventures can be caught in 'conversation loops' back and forth, I will endeavour to keep things kicking along and get the gist of where a conversation is going and keep us pointed in the right direction.

Work, study, piracy on the Spanish main, and wild parties in Mexico have a way of getting in the way sometimes and if that is likely please leave a post in advance if you know that you are likely to have limited time/ability to post for a period of time (and when we can expect you back). I fully anticipate that we will probably have a bit of a go-slow over Xmas and New Years (at which point I will be posting from 2020 whilst you are all still in the wayback of 2019).

On that note, I am posting from Sydney, Australia. Most of you will be posting when I am asleep so when I get up around 0500 odd I usually do the catch up over a coffee, and then usually in the afternoon/evening each day.

I will generally roll Initiative (and any other rolls if really required), but not to shaft anyone or railroad them, more in the interest of giving you some sort of outcome to then respond to - I aim to complete a single round of combat within 24 hours.

When in combat, unless a PC has left botting instructions or made arrangement for another player to bot them, I will place any PC that has not posted within the past 24 hours (48 hours on a weekend) on delay.

If a single skill check has been called for, I will accept the PC with the highest skill bonus as the "primary" and all other attempts by PCs for the same check as aiding another.

We've pretty much wrapped up our Christmas Eve festivities, here.

Just some advanced notice that I will likely be out of action for the next 24-36 hours with Christmas stuff.

Yep Xmas eve dinner just done and now I'm about to do some cleaning before the Xmas day carnage...

Merry Christmas all!

It's Christmas Day so I'm expecting some slow posting, all good :)

Merry Christmas, Shifty.

I hope everyone is enjoying their time with loved ones.

Hey all!

As you may know, a large chunk of Australia is burning.

I have just been called and informed to stand by for a call back from my break to redeploy to assist firefighting efforts. If this kicks off I may be out of comms for about 24 hours or so with little to no notice.

So just warning now in case I go silent.

No worries, Shifty. Take care out there, mate. Stay safe.

VC - Sydney, Australia

It's that hard thing of watching TV and waiting for the call that may or may not come. Bags packed by the door ready to spear away at a moment notice though :)

VC - Sydney, Australia

Hi guys - I got called out today and into things in earnest for the next 24 hours.

I’ll then be ok to post again consistently but possibly just 1-2 times daily.

Stay safe! Thanks for the notice.

Just wanted to say that I'm really enjoying this scenario!

The maps have been great, and it's seemed bigger somehow than other scenarios I've played.

Cheers - I'm getting to update at night ok, morning are hear and there, but we're up early working long days (14-18 hour shifts) so I try crack them out before I get some sleep.

Whilst it sucks our country is burning and there is carnage and trauma all around us, we're still in high spirits with good morale as we are doing some really positive things for people who are stuck in their time of greatest need.

I mean, I got to coord moving water trucks to a drought-affected area - so we will be dropping 120,000l (30,000 gal?) daily into a region that has a potential fire coming on top of the problem of animals and livestock dying of dehydration - so getting those dams full is a bit of a miracle. We've pulled a crashed helicopter out of a lake. We're providing medical attention and psychs into ravaged communities, chainsaw crews and earthmoving equipment to open main roads, and trucking in emergency shelter, food, water, etc into some remote towns where the town has burnt to the ground and people are driving back home to scorched earth where their houses were. I'm out pushing a logistics beast as hard as I can but it is pretty mentally taxing. The thing that sucks is the ones you can't help. You want to, but there's only so much you can do.

Anyhow - updating a few games is a nice change of pace and helps me get some sleep.

Keep up the good work, mate (along with the rest of the Emergency Services).

We've been lucky where I live - only a few relatively small ones that have been quickly dealt with. The worst we've had to deal with had been the ongoing smoke, terrible air quality and ash covering everything.

Our area is pretty much Nowra to Eden and the Kosciusko mountains. We're also still dealing with the wrap up of our earlier efforts in northern NSW.

Just checking in.

The initial fire response is transitioning into disaster recovery, which is great. I am getting a break 28 Jan - 06 Feb, and jumping on a cruise ship for some R&R before going back to the Operation and into the cleanup piece. Fires are still burning, but mostly away from settled areas.

As you'll notice, I have managed to keep in comms every day, so things are progressing pretty well.

What we're doing - and where the damage is - pretty much 195 miles of wrecked coastal towns. Some are just fire-affected, some are just gone.

Dark Archive

My heart goes out to all of you down under. Stay safe.

Well earned R&R, Shifty. You've also done a great job keeping this game rolling along under the circumstances.

That seems like way too many fires. California I know had a lot, and now Australia. Global warming, or are most of these manmade?

VC - Sydney, Australia

Cheers all :)

The cause and problem is a mixed bag. We have had a significant drought and this is linked to a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (as opposed to negative which can bring flooding) that aligned with El Nino drawing rainfall away from Australia has left us in a really dire position with a bone dry continent.

Yes there are some people who light fires deliberately, and then there are the odd ones where hazard reduction burns get out of hand, but then we also end up with dry lightning storms creating fires. Worse, now the smoke is so bad we have had pyro-cumulonimbus clouds forming - yes, the fires created their own weather system... that comes with more dry lightning. That said, there is no doubt there has been issues with climate change.

I think the size of the burnt area is about 10,000,000 hectares (almost the size of England) - six times the size of the Amazon fires.

We have had a bit of a break with two cyclones in the region (one coming in from the west through Indonesia and one through the South Pacific) which has given us a few days of moderate rain which has significantly improved things, but now we have flash flooding and wash away risks.

One more day of work then I'm hopping on a cruise ship for 9 nights in the South Pacific. It's going to be a well-needed break, but also its my opportunity to have a look at the ship's facilities as I am hosting PaizoCon South-Pacific 2020 onboard the same ship at the end of the year.

Looking forward to my favourite boulangerie in Noumea, their croissants are the best you can get :)

True French croissants are the best (as well as baguette). How I miss that since my relocation in Chicago!

So true, but with Noumea being a French colony full of ex-pats I get all the culinary joys of France but without the travel :p

Enjoy!

@Gargalus Thanks for the understanding ;).

On that note, Shifty are we all rested up and recovered for this next quest?

Thanks all!

I popped up a gentle prod into the Flax lodge to see what the interest is in kicking off some scenarios as I have a couple more days at home before going back to work, but it is dead quiet. I assume most people are waiting for the Gameday and not wanting to start anything.
