Duke gets another shot into the same unprotected port side. The drone eats the massive strike, pieces flying off dramatically - the engines judder and the power begins glitching horribly. The front weapon starts sparking.

The drone powers down due to the damage inflicted on it.
The comms crackle back to life, “Is everyone all right? It looks like the drone is powerless. Don’t destroy it please. If you have injured crew please return to the hangar, I’ll have medical personnel waiting for you. If everyone is well, please examine the drone to see if you can determine what happened.”
You determine that the drone didn’t glitch, but has been sabotaged.

Checking the drones programming reveals the access codes of the person who sabotaged the drone, pointing to a member of the Frozen Trove dragoncorp.
Numina 6 |
Numina cannot fail that engineering check and will take 10 on the computers
Numina quickly establishes a connection to the drone and begins to comb through its command codes. Just a minute, this wasn't a glitch, has anyone ever heard of the Frozen Trove? Weren't they mentioned when we started? It looks like a member of them sabotaged the drone, that isnt very friendly. Can we dump a bunch of Vesk bombs on their headqurters?
Fuunk |
"Well, not surprising Frozen Trove responded...
"Cuz we not-so-covertly stole secrets from their outpost, then absconded!"
Numina 6 |
Numina flips open her datapad. Someone at the Frozen Trove tried to sabotage your test flight. Have you done something to upset them? See, look here she says showing him the results of her investigation. If I were to engage in industrial sabotage you can be sure I would be much more careful and not leave a bunch of easily traced digital fingerprints behind. I mean, we might break into a facility quite noisily and beat up the staff but you wouldnt find anything in the computers that I had done. She pauses and cocks her head to one side, In fact, this was so easy to find it might well be a bluff, an attempt by someone else to set them up. Wheels within wheels she adds in an unnecessarily spooky voice.
Shifty |
Akrodo looks at Numi with some concern, "Sounds like your team gave them a motive, and we unwittingly gave them the opportunity and the means"
"Those codes belong to a disgruntled ex-employee with ties to the Frozen Trove dragoncorp. That employee’s access codes should have been invalidated when they were removed from Sanjaval though, which suggests they must have a contact or contacts within Sanjaval. We will fully investigate and resolve the matter"
Akrodo walks you all back to the hangar you arrived in and shakes each of your hands before you depart - “Thank you for all of your work today. We hope that when you make your report to your superiors that it will focus on the ship and its capabilities rather than on today’s mishap. Please pass along that should the Society choose to commission the Remorhaz, in addition to the discount for providing test crew we will be extending an additional hazard discount due to the circumstances of today’s test flight. Please accept our apologies. We hope to hear from you soon.”
***
Back at the Lorespire complex, Naiaj greets you warmly "How'd it all go? I'm personally delighted! Not only did you comport yourselves well and make a good impression on an important partner, you gained the Society better standing in the business relationship with Sanjaval"
Fuunk |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
"Their ship moves like your granny's clunker...
"But that weapon in the bee-hind quickly trashes targets into a junker!"
Fuunk raises four thumbs ups and says, "I dig it!"
Shifty |
"That's good news. I have a last job I need you to do for now. It should be less stressful than most. You’ll be traveling to the Pact World of Apostae to meet with a representative of Arabani Arms Limited at their Karkaken Testing Grounds. This representative is going to provide an overview for some tests that Arabani Arms would like our field agents to perform on their most recent technological developments. In essence, you’ll have a chance to test out some new technology and provide feedback on it. Not only does the Society make some credits off this arrangement, but it also positions our agents to provide feedback on weapons they may well be using in the future"
Gordon Bleu |
Ooo Sounds interesting
culture: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 Arabani Arms isWhat I know from culture check
Numina 6 |
Test new technology, oh yes please says Numina with an approximation of a big grin on her face. Just what sort of technology? Will the Frozen Trove have sabotaged this stuff as well do you think?
Shifty |
Godon finishes his sentence "an arms manufacturer from Apostae owned by the House Ryllan'thor, a drow family, and based out of Nightarch"
Najaj smiles at Gordon "Very good, which answers half of Numinas question - Frozen Trove may or may not wish to try sabotage against a drow arms manufacturer but another drow family would probably have few reservations in engaging in subterfuge. And as they are an arms manufacturer the tech is new weapons and field equipment"
"Always best to keep your wits and care about you on Apostae"
Fuunk |
"Off to Apostae - the planet of drow?
"Nightarch surely has groovin nightclubs, if time will allow!"
Shifty |
The shuttle descends over the drab gray rock of Apostae, diving between two impressive starships smeared with spatters of red paint resembling bloody handprints. Veering from the impressive settlement of Nightarch, the shuttle makes its way to a section of the rocky surface covered in standalone structures, many of which glisten with active power tools in the midst of assembling massive starship components or producing long-lines of smaller personal scale equipment. With a sudden lurch, the shuttle touches down on an open platform, and the pilot ushers to exit out the back hatch.
As you exit the shuttle, a smiling half-orc in construction-worker attire stands at the platform to greet you all "Crax Geshki, I'm the Arabani Arms’ representative in this set of tests, pleased to meet you all" he offers rather pleasantly, with a professional-yet-personalised smile.
"We're going to move from here over to the Karaken testing grounds, need a hand with any of your luggage?"
Photo in slides
Fuunk |
Fuunk looks at the lack of luggage on his right.
Then looks at the lack of luggage on his left.
Then shrugs his shoulders and says, "Nah, brah."
Uafluozhaheed |
"I do not have luggage,". Ua says simply.
Shifty |
The half orc takes the small pink clutch bag, gives it a bit of an appraising look, and then steps off, signalling for all to follow.
He responds to Numi as he walks "Sure! You fine folks are going to be handling some experimental weaponry in a short live-fire demonstration—I’ll need your feedback on the guns afterward. Next, we have some new personal force fields that the R&D division have been dying to test, so you’ll get to inspect those and take some shots while wearing them. Finally, and probably where you’ll all shine the most, is a live combat against some new robots that we’ve developed and plan to sell to some mercenary outfits. We just need your combat experience to review these gadgets and gizmos before we can slap the old Arabani logo on them and put ‘em out in the market!”
Numina 6 |
Numina frowns slightly at the description of the test, Exactly how sentient are these test robots going to be? she asks with something of an edge to her voice.
Uafluozhaheed |
"I will elect not to participate," Ua broadcasts telepathically. "I have no affinity for destructive technology of this scale."
Fuunk |
Fuunk playfully responds, "We're talking about personal weaponry here,
"You wanna bring even larger scale weapons to bear?"
After a chuckle, Fuunk continues,
"However Ua, maybe I'm being paranoid
"But please hang out with us, I dun trust these droids..."
Shifty |
"Paranoid, on Apostae? That's normally thought of as a positive trait" the Half-orc laughs easily, but strangely reassuringly.
You arrive at the range designated for your use. Two copies of four different weapons and several extra ammo clips and batteries are arrayed on a table beside the shooting point for the range, each noted with a holographic display.
The first table has a pair of pistols "The 'Babau’s Kiss', lead spitting light pistol, 4 rounds in the magazine"
The second table has a pair of rifles "These are called 'Matron's Wail', she's loud and very icy"
The third table has a pair of heavy energy weapons "These are 'Apostae's Ire' - for when you want to burn a hole through something big"
The fourth table a pair of sniper rifles "And finally the 'Swarm Zapper', for when you want to reach out and touch someone with a jolt"
Fuunk |
Since Fuunk can utilize any of the weapons, he'll wait till others select theirs first. Fuunk will select his weapon of choice from what is leftover.
Shifty |
"The range of the weapons, from shortest to longest, is babau’s kiss, matron’s wail, Apostae’s ire, and swarm zapper, with swarm zapper having a sniper feature"
"If you want to try it out at different ranges that would be great, looking for five shots, see how you go"
Numi looks across to the mound. The firing range uses robotic arms to move its targets. Targets appear in 10-foot increments, from 10 feet away to 100 feet away, with another set of targets 300 feet away.
When you are ready, you can make five attack rolls - just indicate the ranges you wish to shoot at, either between 10-100, or 300
Cero "Duke" of Maro |
Duke will take Babau's Kiss and the Swarm Zapper
He'll go prone and start shooting at 300 feet with the swarm Zapper, making sure to make use of the sniper feature. Shot 2 will be at 100 feet away, then 90, and so on, always using the sniper feature.
shot 1: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

Duke is putting jolt after jolt onto the target!
Swarm Zapper (Sniper Weapon):
4th-level, shock sniper weapon
2d6 electricity damage
range 120 feet,(500 ft.)
penetrating quality,
Battery (20 charges), has a usage of 10.
1 bulk.
As Duke fires off his final round the magazine seems to eject itself, and then discharges horribly in a blast of electrical chaos!
Damage 6d8 ⇒ (2, 4, 3, 5, 4, 3) = 21

Numi starts firing the Matrons Wail.
Matron’s Wail (Longarm):
4th-level cryo longarm that
2d6 cold damage and has the deafen critical hit effect. It
Range 30 feet,
Battery, has a usage of 2.
1 bulk.
The first time she fires it she gets a fair bit of frosty feedback (1 damage), she checks it then fires again, and the damage happens again. (1 damage).
Numina uses her Engineering skills to examine the weapon closer and can see a design fault in the cryo system that means the operator would continually be affected.
When fired, this weapon deals 1 cold damage to the wielder. For every round the weapon is fired consecutively, increase the cold damage by 1 to a maximum of 5. If the damage reaches 5, then the wielder must succeed a DC 15 Fortitude save (DC 17 in Subtier 5–6) or take 1d4 Dexterity damage from the numbing effect of the chill.
Numina 6 |
Numi waggles her fingers about, trying to warm them. This thing needs some adjustment or your customers are going to lose some fingers to frostbite.
Shifty |
Crax looks a bit concerned and starts taking notes from Numi and putting them into his datapad "Frostbite, is that one word or two? Never mind, a problem with the cryo-system you say? Hmmm works ok if you are from an ice planet or something I suppose..."
The sudden blast gets his attention though as Dukes lane explodes.
"Can't be good"
Cero "Duke" of Maro |
Is there a reflex save for half with that damage? I do have the evasion class feature.
Duke looks over the weapon.
engineering: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19
”Looks like the weapon draws power more power than the rifle needs, and the excess charge builds up in the battery casing, then discharges . . . Violently. Just a minor design flaw you might wanna look into. Probably would only kill 3/4 of your clientele.” he says sarcastically.
Gordon Bleu |
Gordon takes the pistol and tries a couple of close targets
babaus kiss: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

Then a couple of longer range (100 feet)
babaus kiss: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
babaus kiss: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
And then reloads for one more at 100 feet
babaus kiss: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
He seems distracted by what happened to Duke
You Ok Duke
Shifty |
Is there a reflex save for half with that damage? I do have the evasion class feature.
Yep, I missed adding that :)
"Geez, yeah, not so good. Looks like it would make a sweet grenade though" the Half-orc notes the fault in his datapad with a frown.
***
The Babaus Kiss seems fairly effective and does what it says on the tin. The operator is the questionable part of the equation, blatting at the wrong target (or something). At least until the second shot where the critical failure causes the weapon to fragment a bunch of its working parts whilst Gordon is holding it.
Damage 4d4 ⇒ (3, 3, 1, 1) = 8
Babau’s Kiss (Small Arm): This is a 4th-level projectile small arm that deals 2d4 piercing damage and has the bleed 1d4 critical hit effect. It has a range increment of 20 feet and holds 4 small arm rounds. It has the analog special property and is light bulk.
Uafluozhaheed |
"This is why I oppose technology"
Fuunk |
Fuunk picks up the heavy weapon and fires at targets 70, 80, 90, 100 and 300.
shot 1: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30
shot 2: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (18) + 13 = 31
shot 3: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (11) + 13 = 24
shot 4: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26
shot 5: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14
Shifty |
1d4 ⇒ 4
Fuunk starts tearing up the range with the heavy weapon and things are going great, but around five shots in there is a wild blast that destroys not only the target, but four more targets in the vicinity of it are also hit.
The surge chews a stack of power though and the battery is now significantly flatter than you'd like.
This is a 4th-level laser heavy weapon that deals 1d12 fire damage and has the burn 1d6 critical hit effect. It has a range increment of 50 feet, uses a high capacity battery (40 charges), has a usage of 4, and is 2 bulk. Malfunction: When fired, there is a chance this weapon’s shot arcs to all creatures within 10 feet of the original target for one-quarter damage from the initial shot.
