"Sounds like your classic 'beast-of-the-week' situation here", Theo clapped his hands and rubbed them together, getting ready for some hard fighting. "I'll go change, and be right back." The Olympian started walking away, stopped, look confused, then remembered the way to his clean armor and weapons.

Colonel Greer watches Theo leave. "Be right back? In the middle of the briefing? You know, I think I'm going to stop calling him 'soldier.'" Okay ... yes, so, mind control and nature powers and animal magnification ..."

Colonel Greer puts the video of the velociraptors, which are about the size of turkeys, attacking chickens in a high-rise poultry-farm, before being mangled by machines designed to behead chickens. "Yeah, that would count as modification. Did they actually turn chickens into dinosaurs?"

"Any clue as to where they might be going next?"

"Former zookeeper here," Charles raised his upper right hand with a bit of a grin. "Watching the elephant in the pet shop, the way it was acting, it seemed to be getting forced to be aggressive against its will. I mean, part of it was that it'd just been massively enlarged and who knows what kind of metabolic cost that has, but its body language definitely suggested it didn't want to attack people."

Colonel Greer shows the elephant and tiger in the pet shop. It does seem like the animals are being compelled to attack, particularly when Charles points to the signs. Once they do attack, they seem ravenous.

“But my point is, someone had to have gone in to remove the body.” With a shudder, she asks, “Er… the body was removed…?” Not eaten? “…right?”

"Hmm. You're right. Of the five dead, four are female. The elephant trampled a male/female couple and then stopped to ... I always thought elephants were vegetarian and I'd rather not describe what happened next ... That was the only male who died. We believe that Mrs. Handel was being tortured to get information from Mr. Handel. He is still hospitalized and we are about to gather some information before the doctors wake him from his coma."

"As for what happened in the greenhouse, I'm very sorry about that. The soldiers responsible for clearing the greenhouse attempt to kill the living plants without destroying all of Mr. Handel's plants. Apparently they missed one."

"I've had one of our foremost telepaths head over to the hospital room where Mr. Handel is in a coma. Recently awoken coma patients are unreliable witnesses. Ms. Meadows will enter Mr. Handel's thoughts before he wakes," Colonel Greer waits until Theo returns and then patches in a video call, "Hello Ms. Meadows ... I've got my team here. This is a ... ".

"... one-way video call for security purposes," interrupts a woman with short hair and professional attire. "They must be important. You don't want me to pick up any information off them while we talk. They have secrets then? Very well. I will prepare myself to provide a conduit to Mr. Handel."

Ms. Meadows reassures the camera, "This may seem odd, but this is the least damaging way to interrogate someone after a coma."

Ms. Meadows doesn't do anything obvious. She gets quiet for a bit and touches the hand of the man in the bed with one finger, pressing her fingertip against his fingertip lightly.

Then, she starts breathing very hard. Her fingertip stays in contact but otherwise she waves her arms and legs a bit. She stands up, sits down, and asks, "Where am I?". Her voice sounds unnatural, like it's a new voice box and she's still working it in.

Mr. Handel has not moved at all. Ms. Meadows says, in a more natural voice, "You can talk to Mr. Handel through me now. I will be his vocal apparatus. I am also calming him and giving him a space from which to recount what happened. He believes he is sitting in his greenhouse and talking to me. He will answer any of your questions."

Charles was still rather uncomfortable with the whole situation, but... if it meant stopping more animals and people from getting killed...

"Ummm... when, er, everything happened, were there people trying to get information from you? Do you remember what they wanted to know?"

Ms. Meadows squints and her voice answers, creakily again, "Questioning? Wanted? I don't understand? You mean Flora? Beautiful Flora. She just wanted to make sure my babies got to where they were supposed to go. And to know about their off switch. 'Can't allow that! hahaha.' That's what she said."

Ms. Meadows is smiling now, but it doesn't look like a smile that fits her face. She's smiling someone else's smile.

Colonel Greer, looking at a datapad, "Medical reports reveal Mr. Handel ingested some kind of hallucinogen during or before the attack. We suspect he was drugged."

"My wife? Did something happen to my wife?" he seems concerned for a minute. "Lovely Flora promised not to hurt ... lovely Flora."

He calms down a bit.

"They aren't dangerous. They wouldn't hurt anyone. GreenGuard's new NightGuard Assassin Vines, Now 60% Less Lethal!" He sounds like he does his own commercials. You've never seen one.

Nissa types via a note-taking app on her personal comm.

He didn’t know about his wife, did he?

But his 60% less lethal is a strange claim. My weapons are nonlethal, but at the gun shop, guns were either made to kill or made to knock out. Lethality is never a percentage.

Has there been an issue with accidental deaths caused by his GreenGuard babies?
And the first ‘lovely Flora’—the one that promised not to hurt a second ‘lovely Flora’—is that his plant? (The second ‘lovely Flora’ being his dear departed wife?)

She finally stops writing and shows Greer. Her message takes up the entire screen when she adjusts the font for easier reading (for human eyes), as Nissa has the smallest sized comm available, due to her tiny halfling hands.

Verve finds articles about Nightguard Assassin Vines. When they detect movement, they writhe and twist towards the movement and constrict whatever they encounter. They're sold as a more natural security option for large outdoor areas. In the daytime, the plants reach for the sun and no longer respond to movement.

News reports show that some unsuspecting protesters attempting to access a military base were strangled by the first generation of GreenGuard plants. Mr. Handel defended his product in the news reports, "The secret is don't struggle when you're caught!"

"What can you tell us about Flora, Mr. Handel?" asks Colonel Greer looking at Nissa's personal comm.

"A lovely woman. You just missed her I think. She came with a young man ... They looked alike. I've never met her before, but she knew a lot about plants and everything about my work. She brought me a gift. A flower I'd never seen before but with the most intoxicating scent! Some kind of purple orchid. Of course, I invited them to come to the greenhouse to meet Lilith. That's my wife. And, then, ... I think there was some kind of argument. Say, perhaps you should talk to Lilith. Where is she? Have you seen her?"

The most relevant article you find is a European environmental group newsletter mocking a pair of would-be superheroes, Flora and Fauna who claimed to be the children of the goddess Freya. The author of the article said, "We don't know who their mother is, but we certainly can guess whose the father." That's from two years ago and it's the most recent newsletter from that group.

Ms. Meadows voice speaks again in her more natural tone "The drugs are no longer in his system, but his memories of the event are shaped by them. He seems barely aware of his wife's presence. If you'd like me to pull him out of it and make him aware of his wife's death now, I can."

Ms. Meadows channels Mr. Handel as she focuses his mind and he comes to realize what happened. Through Ms. Meadows, he begins to cry for his wife.

After a minute, Ms. Meadows takes over and wipes her eyes. "So, you've got a team here? A team of important people. People with secrets. What are you up to Dyer Greer?"

Colonel Greer uncomfortable but looks around and says, "Any other questions for Mr. Handel?"

(Are these basically the Wonder Twins, but evil?)

She explains to Theo, in a semi-apologetic tone, “I might’ve been a bit judgy. The guy was praising his killer plant, totally oblivious to the fact his ‘baby’ was the weapon used to brutally murder his wife.”

No! ... Well, no ... Well, okay, they're the Wonder Twins, kind of, but evil and with Norwegian accents.

Ms. Meadows uses her mind to calm his.

The man answers again. His tone is different. He no longer sounds like a love-sick puppy. Now he sounds horrified at what he has done but clear-headed at the same time. "I gave her ... gave them the codes for the data terminal. They know where all my shipments are going. ... Flora asked about the off-switch, how I created it ... and how to disable it."

He pauses, "These plants were bred from an aggressive alien species unlike any plants on Earth. All I have done was find ways to reduce their viciousness and adapt them to our atmosphere. This could be bad. Really bad. I think I am going to need a lawyer now."

Dr. Preston slides her datapad across the table. She copied the addresses from the data terminal in the greenhouse before the plant attacked Nissa.

There are three addresses.

The first address is that of a warehouse that wanted some NightGuard plants for perimeter protection.

The second address is that of a military research base that tracks military applications of genetic research.

The third is referred to as the Seedvault. It's a government installation that keeps samples and strands of genetic material, seeds, in-stasis clones, etc. of every life-form encountered anywhere in the universe.

Nissa looks up at Theo, forced toothy smile on her face, eyes flaring like they do in battle seconds before a super nova. “About my being unfairly hard on him. I take it back.”

She then swivels her head toward the screen, wishing she could go in there and punch the comatose Handel’s nose concave. “Your lawyer?!

“Call your in-laws and a funeral director first, you dink! Do you have any idea how worried I was when your f@@!ing baby wrapped itself around L.C.’s leg?! Do you know what an emotional wreck I’d be if she—”

Nissa stops herself from mentioning the unthinkable. Besides, Preston was not some helpless damsel in distress. She was brave and capable, and Nissa’s explosive power kicked in before the vine could do more than trip the good doctor.

She says coldly to the man, “Give us your full cooperation, and you won’t need a lawyer. However, if you hold anything back to slow our investigation, no lawyer will be able to protect you.”

Bluff: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
(The bluff is to sound like she has any real authority or knowledge of all the legal bits.)

Ms. Meadows face contorts as she snobs and snivels and croakily voices the CEO's apologies, "I'm sorry ... I'm sorry ...".

Her face uncontorts and she says, "I don't think he's hiding anything. I've looked under the hood and he seems to be just another geneticist-turned-CEO with a bad idea. If I don't calm his emotions, he's overwhelmed. If I do, he can answer questions."

Mr. Handel, geneticist-turned-CEO with a bad idea, recounts his story, more clearly than before. It started with a pair of visitors, one of whom brought him a rare orchid. He felt dizzy smelling the orchid and his memories are hazy after that. He has flashes of being interrogated. The one called Flora asked the questions. He could see his wife struggling, but Flora promised not to hurt her. The plants were out of control though. They shouldn't have been acting like this.

His gene-splicing business started during a trip off-world with his wife. There was a planet where the grass curled around your bare feet when you walked on it. He smuggled some home only to find that when he adapted the plants for our atmosphere they grew much larger and more aggressive. His only real challenge was taming them, making them inactive in the daytime and designed to restrain not kill. At 4 cm high these little guys are no harm at all, I guess unless you are a bug or your name is Nissa and you've shrunk down to scale.

Flora asked Mr. Handel brilliant questions about genetics even before they got through the greenhouse door. She seemed to know as much about his work as he did and had certainly read his patent application.

Mrs. Handel was surprised by the intrusion but before she could object Flora walked over to the plants, touched them, and they reverted to their aggressive selves, but under her control.

Charles listened quietly, not trusting himself to speak. For some reason his opinion of people who messed with genetics had dropped rather badly of late, and in the circumstances he didn't particularly think it a good idea to speak some of his thoughts. Though Nissa seemed to be stirring that pot well enough herself.

So they had three possibilities now. Himself, he'd suspect one of the second two. Unless that warehouse had something amazing in it, it wouldn't be much of a target. But the other two? Especially for a pair with plant and animal powers, either one would probably make a tempting target.

He looks at the others and spreads his hands (all of them, which plays a bit of havoc with the cloak's disguise), trying to signal he wasn't sure there was more to ask.

Colonel Greer thanks his Ms. Meadows and ends the one-way video call.

"Do you think those two have the firepower to break into a military base? The Seedvault would be the more vulnerable of the two."

The pilot patches a call through to the a copter's speakers. It's an emergency call from an address the pilot identifies as the seedvault. It's under attack. The guard gets cut off before he can explain by what.

"Guess Halfdane did make our decision for us," muses Greer. "Luckily we are already heading in that direction. I'm going to send a stealth drone to watch the warehouse as well."

Colonel Greer shares a map of the Seedvault. Built into a mountain, it can be reached by a long windy road or by a short helicopter ride. There is an area on the mountain for vehicles to unload shipments, an entrance tunnel sloping slightly upwards, and at the top of the slope, an elevator down to the vaults. The vault area is a branching web of tunnels Greer calls 'the Snowflake.'

"The emergency call came from the loading area, which is the only part that's guarded," says Greer.
