The screens keep playing the teaser for the First Responders' press meeting later this evening. The AIs have detected interest from most of you, whether you intended to show it or not. They must have read some micro-expression of disgust or interest or envy. It doesn't matter what kind of reaction you had, only that you had one. The AIs are programmed to look for reactions, positive or negative, and drive similar stories at that person to see what sticks.

When you arrive at the debriefing with L.C., there's food: real fruit, cheese, fake meats, real coffee, tea, etc. It's a nice spread.

As you enter, one of the staff hands you plates and invites you to load them up on your way to the seat.

Colonel Greer never had a debriefing catered.

L.C. says, "Tell me everything ..."

You don't have to tell her everything. What I should know is if there is anything you DON'T tell her.

With a spread like this in front of him and everyone in one room, it quickly become obvious that Henri must have an amazing metabolism. While he is not a large man, he tucks into his food like two-and-a-half hobbits. When he realizes that he's being watched, he stops with embarassment. "I, uh, sorry. I have been so hungry every since I reached the camp..."

I have the feeling that Henri is too naive to hold anything back, even if instructed to do so, but he's hesitant to say anything since he's the new guy. It might take a bit of encouragement for him to speak up.

"I'm still stuffed from the pancakes," whispers April Patel, spy for RAIN.
"Fair," whispers Tarantula of World 16's TAROT. Tarantula is piling protein onto her plate, mostly in the form of vegan 'chicken'.

Nissa will tell all, or she’ll fill in any blanks.

Nissa doesn’t need to eat. No one needs coffee, but it’s real coffee, dammit. Nissa gets coffee.

She mentions Henri’s power, allowing him the opportunity to speak for himself first, but happily interjecting the pocket-rides as an example of teamwork and combining powers. When it comes time to introduce the ladies, she suggests a Robocop 2 screening when everyone interested can free up a couple hours.

April’s intro can’t be so lighthearted. “…and who she isn’t is Ms. Grey.” Nissa is close to April. She will not stand for an overreaction.

“The Ms. Grey we knew was one of many on World 12 using time-travel to take out enemies before they could do anything wrong… or even prevent their births. So imagine the hypocrisy if we held April accountable on those terms.

“When I realized who April was, I didn’t see an enemy. I saw an amazing woman in a horrible world trying to make things right. It explained why even the President herself was sold on Ms. Grey’s ideas.” And as Nissa has always been vocal about her objection to time-travel, she notes, “Just by crossing paths with April, her path had already been altered.

“Every fiber of my being told me just do the right thing. Time travel was accidental, but I saw the choice. To do nothing with the intent of changing nothing would make me an accomplice in Greer’s death, and I would put you in danger, L.C.

“I guess nothing changes for us, as Dr. Moore—he’s not a real doctor, I know, but… he’s smart. And right.” Looking up at April, Nissa says, “But I wasn’t thinking of myself. I saw a woman who was doomed to be corrupted the way Portly was corrupted, and maybe even Madam President could have been.

“She hasn’t done what Ms. Grey had done. She is not Ms. Grey. She met her… an older woman who I believe felt remorse.” Nissa will tell (or let April tell) of Ms. Grey handing her ring to April. She suggests the ring be examined. (Is it more than just a ring?)

“April still has the same motive as Ms. Grey—she wants to fix a broken world. She’s willing to learn from us. We did just save two worlds in a row from demons and aliens.”

If L.C. accepts Nissa’s assessment of April—and won’t treat her like a criminal—Nissa will happily change the topic. She wants to know what’s going on on Earth. Do I need to make a statement?

Theo takes his plate and loads up on red and green seedless grapes. The godling adds battle commentary to Nissa's report, in between popping grapes into his mouth. Pleased with The Angel Sword's performance, The Olympian also goes on about the threat of the reptilians from Zellgato's world.

Charles ate a second meal not long ago, but he's quite happy to eat more. He has a lot of reserves to refill, after all.

Charles lets Nissa take the lead on the report, though he adds a number of details on the demons, battle performance, notes on the quirks of the two different worlds they'd been to, and the troubles of the people they'd met. He switches smoothly between heads as he speaks, though his right head often has his mouth full.

He waits for the response to Nissa's comments before starting in on what's going on with himself.

Zellgato takes this opportunity to recap his life from the last standpoint. Some folks here have heard, many haven't. He recounts how the camp was quanratine and was in a bad situation last time. How Von Junzt transformed. How he was sent by his handlers to the mountain with Gristlethorne. The lab around the base of it, VJ coming with them. The ambush-the near death. A different Zellgato plucking him out.
Continuing for April's benefit of the beach, the sea, cutting loose and partying a bit-he emphesizes food at that party-.
He briefs her on what little he understands of the rules of the organizations with regards to wars. Almost starting one on accident with Fishdicks. Trying to kill him. The existance of Magic-and the coin, the world (he glosses over Theo's duel-that's a story for Theo). He brings up his Tiger-Man contact. Bringing his story to the deamon hunt. Letting the others fill in details of that event.

Zellgato in effect mostly ignores L.C. and BT command staff. Instead responding and debriefing his handler. But he will end it with "Also, the cafeteria has Sushi, Soda, and Coffee. Real stuff."

---------
Adding to Nissa's commentary on Grey. "I've not really met this Grey but I've seen notifications and pictures. Pretty glad I didn't have to fight Nissa, Theo or Charles due to it-That would end badly. She's more mature than I realized."
-------------------------
The only thing Zellgato glosses over and does not mention is Genius Meadows. Mostly as he figures that should be a topic for when she has rested. The little one taxed herself heavily afterall.

Henri eventually realizes that he does have something to contribute. Given the opening, he shares his observations of the camp before the heroes arrived. Perhaps that information will be useful for future battles against the invading creatures.

After listening to Nissa, L.C. draws her own conclusion, "So, if Moore was right about time travel, then to get Greer back, we'd have to go back in our own timeline and change it? Changing the timeline in another world doesn't fix messes they've caused in our own timeline?"

She shakes her head a bit, "You know, I'm going to have to explain that to the President and I can barely wrap my head about it and she isn't ... well, she's not a rocket scientist ... I mean, when was the last time we had a smart person in the White House? Have we ever? Certainly none since it was rebuilt in New Washington."

She then adds, "I can't believe I said that out loud."

After listening to Nissa more, as well as Charles and Theo, she says, "So, in the last 50 hours, you've stopped or hindered transdimensional invasions on two different worlds of the TAROTverse? Regular demons and reptilian parasite demons? I'll need a threat assessment on those. Do you think they will attack our world?"

"Our World? What world are we anyhow? If Zellgato is from World 12 and Tarantula here is from World 16, what's our number?" asks L.C. at one point.

Theo:
Just as L.C. asks this, you find yourself touching the tarot card that's been in your pocket since that sexy oracle took the rest of the pack and gave you only one card back. At the time she said something like "You'll be needing this." or something otherwise ambiguous. You must have put on that jacket again. If you don't remember what the card is, you can pull it out, look at it and I'll tell you what you see. Or ignore it.

Nissa shrugs, “It’s cool, L.C. I only voted for her ’cause my agent mansplained how it’d be good for my career, being 18 and voting for the first woman president. I did that Real American Heroine gig that October—wore red, white and blue?”

She changes her armor to the hottest fashion, and being 5th of July, peppermint striped halter tops and cut-off bluejeans with flip-sequin stars on the butt pockets are a popular clearance sale item.

“Ahhh, nuts. It’s sweet not having to wear yellow all the time, but this new look’ll take getting used to.

“Anyway, L.C. …we can’t tamper with the timeline. As much as I hoped our world—our Greer—would be back, I’d have altered your memories. Altered us. Believe me, L.C., I traveled time accidentally, trying to get here directly from World 16. If we start saving our own through time travel, we may as well number our world 12-B.”

She moves closer. (And for all her complaining about the outfit, she isn’t magical-girling any valkyrian plating to cover up those Daisy Dukes.)

She looks up at L.C. “While we’re talking about Greer… how’d ya like to go off-world and meet the Greer of World 16? Like you said, our world isn’t numbered. But to him, we count.”

Theo finds himself holding 'The Fool'. It depicts a traveler stepping off the side of a cliff and reminds Theo of those wild parties his Uncle Dionysius used to throw where naked and drunk people would dance off the sides of cliffs. There's a zero at the top of the card. A dog nips at the traveler's ankles.

Theo had walked in on a conversation between Kai and Ron and older Zellgato once (not the younger Zellgato that joined the team, but his older self who sent the younger self to join the team.)

Older Zellgato: "The Fool was lost. That's why there are only 21 worlds in the Tarotverse and 21 Celestials. The elves debate whether the word from Old Elven is best translated as 'dead' or 'lost'."

Kai: "The Fool? Is that the... wait, they told me about this. Something about each of the 22 worlds being under the influence of a, umm...Celestial. Which world is under the auspices of The Fool? It sounds like this shattered crystal could be what is currently in the black box inside the omnisium vault."

Theo walked in at this point and the subject changed.

"So, what's next? We're under some pressure to prove we're worth our budget and with the First Responders claiming co-credit for saving the world from demons and with you disappearing for the next couple days, there have been questions. The Republican Democrats are suggesting that our funding be reallocated to the First Responders. The Democratic Republicans are looking like they might cave in," says L.C., visibly upset at having to care about politics.

"Republican Democrats? Democratic Republicans?" mouths Tarantula, putting a finger-gun to her head, pulling the trigger, and mouthing "Mind blown"

"Well, most of my ideas are insane", Theo starts. "I think we should make our return home publicly. Maybe crash another First Responders press conference. Or have one of our own. But if we did, what would we say. 'Hello citizens. Your TAROT team is fine. Just came back from two separate demonic invasions, but don't worry. But worry because alternate dimension really do exist.'

The Olympian takes a few grapes and eats them. "If we convince fricking Congress the threats are real and TAROT is needed, imagine the governmental oversight we'd have to endure. I like the set up we have here. I'm not getting any richer, but I'm helping not only to save lives, but worlds. ..And occasionally bang hot alien/interdimensional chicks. I think we are doing some good." Theo gets silent for a moment. "And that's something I haven't been able to say for a while now, come to think of it."

Back to supporting Theo’s idea, Nissa says, “I got a reporter who wants an exclusive with me. So I say, let’s drop a bombshell fulla truth. Get all the footage we can to show Flora and Fauna’s murder spree. And all the footage we can of out fight against the demons here.

“Y’know that device Scarlet and Thin Spot used to see what my mind saw? Does it work with memories —I mean accurately. It won’t help if that device picks up distorted memories or imagination.”

Realizing that she is considered the face —of a team, she adds, “I’m happy to do a one-on-one, or full team, or volunteer basis.

“And we gotta be on message. As Theo said, the threats are real. And we’re the ones thwarting them.”

She adds, “Also, only a f!!%ing idiot would believe 137 years in virtual prison isn’t spent scheming for when you get out and still have your youth. That’s not for the press conference, but… just sayin’.”

"They have a press conference in about an hour," says Tarantula. Still not quite grasping how the AIs target news at specific viewers, she adds, "It was on that weird news channel."

L.C. smiles slightly at Nissa's claim of fidelity and nods at her other ideas.

"Oh, yeah. Two new members," L.C. replies to Tarantula.

“What can our Nerd Department whip up in an hour?” For the sake of the new people, Nissa clarifies, “Nerd’s a compliment when I say it.

“Anyway, we don’t need to call out the lies—yet. We need only get it out there that there are two sides to every story.

“Footage of our battle against the demons needs to be edited for the viewers, but we also need to have the unedited version ready to send to the press.”

“Let her break the story. I made a promise of an exclusive. I go back on my word, a truth-bomb has no credibility.”

"I'll set it up," says Ron, "You want to do simultaneous live commentary on the First Responders' newscast? The AIs will drive your response straight at any eyeballs banging the First Responders clip."

Zellgato asks, while not directly stating certain concepts. Given he is unaware of how much of this sort of debrief is consumed outside of this room.

Of course she looks good, and knows it.

“Heyyy, Tasha. It’s me, Nissa, back from the dead, if ya believe your competitors.” She grins, but considers she won’t seem so cute if she keeps Miss Gentry in the dark. “I just got back, and nobody outside of Boston Theoretical knows, except you just now. What better time to give you that exclusive I promised ya.

“We’re on in one hour. Provided you’re interested, of course.”

Ron shoots the location at Tasha and Tasha shoots a message back, "Can't make it there in an hour. Meet halfway at the church where it happened?"

Tasha messages again, "I could have a drone to you within an hour though!"

"I was never quite.. clear on that. Does the general public know alternate worlds and all that?"

"This isn't our first transdimensional invasion," says L.C. "But unless the public is presented with undeniable evidence, gov't policy is to deny until we have more information. Boston Theoretical is a key part of making sure that we can handle whatever is out there before we tell the public."

"Like, the gov't just lets the public think that Bigfoot is a cryptoid from this world. Until we know where they come from and how they keep stepping in and out of our dimension, it's probably better we don't let people know the truth."

"Through a combination of psilocybin and neurostimulation," explains Ron, "a person can experience a year of time passing in about 90 minutes. Rapid Rehabilitation Programs save money by not tying up resources in prisons. It's only allowed when society sees a greater potential benefit from having the rehabilitated person released than it sees in further punishing them. It shouldn't be allowed in this case. Usually, it's for parents whose kids would benefit from having them back and rehabilitated. It's not for spree killers."

"I tried to check who convinced the judge to allow it in this case but the judge heard the argument in chambers. Nothing on the record anywhere. We've looked," adds L.C.

Tasha just offered to get a drone to Nissa within the hour or to meet Nissa halfway--at the church. Nissa would know that Boston Theoretical has very fast vehicles and could probably get Tasha there. So, you have choices.

"I've done some bad things and even I find that concept rather distastful. Also. I find the concept to be unlikely to stick. The brain is not neurplastic enough for such a thing to stick. The psilocybin is more apt to cause damage rather than a natural pathway shift developed over time. Nothing that comes from that is likely to stick in an adult-A child or teenager's brain is still growing and rapidly changing. It might have an effect. but again. To put in Theo's phrasing. That sounds f!%~ed up." waving his hand at the nonsense.

Intended towards L.C.

"Ma'am you might want to discuss in detail what she's suppose to share given your whole secracy directive. Just a few hours ago she literally pretended to be a flying angel cakes and caused a riot. Albiet I don't think either was intended."

“‘Pretending’ being the operative word.

“We’re about to lose our funding to people pretending to be reformed, and people have already seen a dead Angel and dead demons. Gonna need to be honest if we wanna be trusted.”

To alleviate some concern, “Honest isn’t tell all. But no sense in lying about what people already saw.

“Also, any video of us entering the portal to World 16?”

"Legion might have been recording. Also... wasnt that in the middle of a crowd as we chased a deamon in the sky? How is that not already on the news and forgotten by the news cycle?"

"The First Responders shared some pretty good footage of you fighting the demons. They just made sure to clip the footage to exclude you," complains Ron.

"And, there's a shadowy shot of the team disappearing through the portal, but people aren't sure what to make of that. It certainly helped fuel the rumours that you were dead," adds L.C. [b]"We're not allowed to talk about parallel worlds, but it does feel like the cats out of the bag. Some kind of announcement will need to address this soon, but that's above my pay grade. Give me something I can take to President Wallace that makes us all look good, and it will go along way towards keeping us together."

Nissa replies, “I think it’s enough to say we followed the demons into the portal. It took us to the Angel’s world. Not heaven, not hell, but a world with people. Angel was a superhero and the demons were a supervillain’s creation.

“We fought. We won. We used a portal to return.”

Nissa admits, “I’m only answering to what needs to be answered. We hide our knowledge and people will invent explanations. But it’s not just that. We have proof that the First Responders lied to diminish us and take credit from us, and really, funding.

“If I go out there and obviously lie, or say ‘it’s classified’ without saying anything interesting, the public will see us as liars too. And when both sides lie, it doesn’t matter who the bigger liar is.”

She sums it up, “Tell President Wallace I need to clarify what the public has plainly seen. The other stuff about TAROT, World 12, time-travel, fictionaughting, bathing with Artemis and her nymphs, Theo winning a trail by combat against an Atlantean Nazi, and that we’ve only been doing interdimensional travel for a month and are already frequent flyers… all that, I won’t get into.”

"Bathing with Artemis and her nymphs," whispers Tarantula to April.

April shrugs.

"Sure, yeah, I'll get President Wallace on her private number. We're besties now," says L.C., her face showing concern, but not annoyance. "Do what you think is best and we'll let the chips fall where they may. Whether the New White House folks appreciate us or not, they need all of you more than you need all of them."

"Well, you have a publically known otherworlder..two of me now. Three if we count my old self. Albiet it would be difficult to deny the general twin-family for the general populace. Regardless of checks and balances..." Rubbing his neck and scratching at his self given medicantion that he realizes now was rather unrequired. "There is not much to do today yes? It has been a very long day in multiple worlds... and I think I probably need to check something. At some point. I don't think Nissa should do an interview alone; That feels like an easy set up to ruin BT or at least Nissa. If anyone caught wind it could look like a payoff, or given the discussion on certain hero's murder-hobbies, a great way to set up Nissa with a corpse--but I am the parnoid one from an apocolypse world. So.. Salt grain soup."

Nissa’s nose scrunches a little at the idea she can’t handle a press conference alone.

But she perks up at Theo’s question. ”If you do go, wear a recording device. You might hear something incriminating.”

L.C. looks a little nervous both at the possibility of Nissa saying too much and of Zellgato joining the interview and saying something too strange, "We have to do something to repair the damage. Anyone who wants to speak to Ms. Gentry can.

In regards to Theo crashing the First Responders, L.C. adds, "Pretty sure the First Responders are holding their conference in a generic regional studio used by SuperHeroNews. They might let you it the door, Theo."
