Okay, so I guess that was Hyve after all. Phew.

Treasure: Not-dibs. Nothing here for a wizard -- the Ring of Protection is an AC bonus, doesn't stack with Mage Armor.

Male Human Wizard | HP 22/22 |AC 17 (Tch 13, FF 14) | Fort 0, Ref +3, Will +7|Init +1 Perception +1

So, team: that's two down, one to go. I'd like to think that zapping the third cult boss will cause the monster to evaporate but somehow I suspect it won't be that easy.

Long rest, recover and buff, and then go after the last one?

[Loot] | [Maps] Toilsday the 13th of Pharast, around 11:30 p.m.

Nah, why rest? I think you guys are good to go straight to the last one! Hup hup! Defeat the module in record time! What could go wrong?!

[Loot] | [Maps] Toilsday the 13th of Pharast, around 11:30 p.m.

Also, kudos. Despite my making this challenge more... challenging... you guys did really well. Methodical, each person's actions/attacks on point, and handling curve balls with panache.

Can you believe the original encounter had just Hyve by himself? And a weaker version? Amazing. I ruled that a cultist could very well - and would probably - summon a devil to protect himself out of desperation, and fortunately the first Aversion'd devil passed his check to summon a second (which was a clutch move, Yelena, as otherwise you guys might have had two barbazu to handle.)

Even so, despite the slip 'n slide chute and the barbazu teleporting in, you guys were never in any real danger.

Which means the final encounter... well. I'm going to see if I can't amp things up enough that you at least start to get a little worried...

But you should still totally go tackle it right now with no breaks.

Female Human Lepidstadt Inspector 5 | Initiative +4 | Perception +10 | Fort +3 Ref +9 Will +7 | HP 45 AC 19

I missed all the fun BUT I didn't get fireballed either, so it balances.

And I think part of how it went so well was a good dose of luck - Lys with that awesome critical hit changing how the whole fight went down. I'm a little worried what the next buff is gonna be.

Maritine would like the belt or the ring, and might have a use for the venom.

Male Human Wizard | HP 22/22 |AC 17 (Tch 13, FF 14) | Fort 0, Ref +3, Will +7|Init +1 Perception +1

The slip'n'slide chute was inspired. It temporarily shut down our action economy, which is what makes a party of six really hard to fight.

Tentative dibs on the Ring of Protection. High AC is the only thing standing between Mihaela and a very quick death, as abundantly proven in the last fight.

Speaking of which, the slide down thing was very well orchestrated! Mihaela's lucky to be alive. Well done!

Re: the first barbazu — I see a second devil-looking token on the map, on the far ledge. Is that him? If so, we might want to deal with it before moving on; letting a devil roam free would make for two eldritch things wandering around Carrion Hill...

[Loot] | [Maps] Toilsday the 13th of Pharast, around 11:30 p.m.

Sorry, meant to state that he leaves upon Hyve's death.

Male Human Wizard | HP 22/22 |AC 17 (Tch 13, FF 14) | Fort 0, Ref +3, Will +7|Init +1 Perception +1

Okay so:

Quote:
"Rupman Myre is a middenstone baron. He owns a large vathouse down in the Filth along the river banks, and is rumored to be involved with illegal necromancy, but to date the Crows have not been able to find enough evidence to arrest him. Not for lack of trying."

Check, done.

Quote:
"Arlend Hyve is an authority on regional history and lore, a sage who dwells in an abandoned church of Aroden on Elm Way on the southern slope of the Tangles. There are whispers that he dabbles in the black market poison and drug trade, but nothing conclusive enough to get him in real trouble. Till now, of course."

Check, done. That leaves Target #3:

Quote:
"Waldur Crove is well known as the warden of Crove’s Asylum, a building located in the Crown that the Crows have long used to dispose of lunatics and the insane too dangerous to keep in regular prisons. He's been a pillar of the community. Makes me sick to think of him involved with this madness."

1) Let's do a quick sweep of Hyve's living quarters (did he have other drugs or poisons around? any records of any sort?)

2) LONG REST.

3) Ask the authorities to set a discreet watch on the Asylum.

4) If there's a non-caster who has decent Stealth and doesn't need to rest, maybe do a brief cautious reconnaissance?

5) Think about our target. Both the other two were using their positions as cover for shenanigans -- one was a necromancer, the other a poisoner. So, good chance Crove will follow the pattern. Best guess would be using inmates as henchmen / followers / cannon fodder. That could get tricky -- we can't just Fireball our way through a bunch of people who may be controlled, deluded, or simply insane. Maybe let's think in terms of non-lethal or anyway less-lethal solutions?

Thoughts?

I do really want to get my alchemical knowledge back up to where Hyve was doing whatever he was doing, and I'd bet Walter does too. Regeants and potions and who knows whatever else could be useful, plus whatever else we can ransack within reason.

Speedrun jokes and all that aside I'm leaning towards a rest but I also still have almost all of my class abilities and functions and spells/potions so that's a bit of bias there.

Stealth wise I think Mihaela beats me (I have a +10) but she might want downtime to recharge and/or heal, and if we do take a rest I want to see if its possible for me, class wise, to make a few extra spells/potions that can be passed around - I'm still getting the hang of playing an alchemist class and I want to see if i can do any useful shenanigans with our possible downtime.

I could volunteer for the Stealth mission, as Lys' Stealth is pretty good (+15, as I just realised I DON'T have an ACP), have full Grit and HP and can could eventually open any doors that are being uncooperative.

Famous last words, but, hey, someone has to. If there's a potion of something that would allow me to run like hell if I need to, I'll take it!

OOC, though, the recon is a surefire way to split GM attention and slow the game down, as much as it makes sense.

I see the point of that -- splitting the party is less of an issue in PBP than in FTF, but it does take up more DM bandwidth. Seems like it's something that could be resolved in a post or two, though.

I agree with sticking to the plan: we're spent for the day, let's recuperate and get ready for tomorrow's big showdown.

Even then, that might not necessarily be a bad thing. We've been getting non-stop action coming our way since the module started, rushing from one fight to another with only two brief interludes; having some downtime might provide a nice change of pace and perhaps a chance for our PCs to interact with one another in more leisurely context?

By the way, what do you say about scouting the cave a bit more thoroughly? That means dealing with the fungi, I suppose, but since we still have all our buffs on...

I am also of a mind to be resting and reloading before the last stretch. Not just because I'm out of buffs, but because I'd like to change up some spell selections.

Also, that +1 aberration-bane mithril lucerne hammer looks really nice and Kolthis would like some bonding time with his new boo, assuming that no one else wants to hold on to it.

Otherwise, not super interested in any of the loot.

Did we find anything in Hyve's place that the key in equipment would fit? Is it to the front door, or notable in any way?

Aw yeah, good catch.

[Loot] | [Maps] Toilsday the 13th of Pharast, around 11:30 p.m.

@Kolthis: The key does not fit any lock contained within the Elmway Church; it is an interesting artifact, cast of black iron, and with what looks to be a squid or octopus-like head at the end of the short handle.

@Mihaela: I'm ruling that you all dispatch the fungi from a distance - no need for rolls.

@Lys: I'm up for your scouting, but we'll need to post quick on that so as to not delay the game. Let me know what you decide, and if you can commit to a post or two a day to wrap it up while the others socialize!

@Maritine: And to be clear, the alchemy tables function as a fully operative alchemist lab, allowing for bonuses to item creation.

Btw, we're now 2/3rds of the way through the module. This might be our last moment of real downtime, so there's no rush. Take your time to enjoy rp and chat with your fellows, because after this it's going to be a mad sprint to the end, with me (your fellow DM) ramping up the difficulty to the max so as to break your bodies and spirits and sacrifice them in pleasing form to the Great Old Ones.

So Lys: you know that Keeper Waldur Crove is the director of Crove's Asylum, a building that looms over the cliffs on the city's eastern edge. It's one past midnight at this point. Go ahead and post your general plan of approach, and I'll pick up where you leave off.

The plan was - get to where the asylum is while not being overly seen (as spies and things exist). Afterwards, circle the asylum doors and find and locate any entrances other than the large, creaking rusty metal doors that every psychologically charged mental asylum needs to have.

If we only had a decent liar among us, we could've pretended to try and sign Walter into the asylum.

Maritine might give it a shot, maybe try to use Lepidstadt again to give some oomph, but that's just a suggestion.

I have literally just gotten home from all the crazy stuff I had to handle (it's 1 am) so my post is pushed back a bit, but she's there and has just sorta slumped into a seat if you want to pick on her. GM do you want a roll for her grabbing any of the extracts and poisons and stuff?

The selling is just for the unclaimed stuff right? Everyone's had a chance to pick something useful for themselves? Because I just looked at the list and there's a bit more than I remember so if you haven't yet, have a peek.

DM what do we have available in Carrion Hill and what limitations do we have on shopping?

And an aside I'm kinda glad I'm not at the asylum because that orderly is a whole lot of NOPE

True, true. Indeed, no point in keeping track of how much each single PC owes / is owed anymore. If there's an item one of you think could be useful, now it's the time to use our resources to go for it (Mihaela, for her part, is satisfied with her shiny new Ring of Protection).

And to think I questioned why I have 20 doses of Vermin Repellant.

[Loot] | [Maps] Toilsday the 13th of Pharast, around 11:30 p.m.

I forget: does shooting an xbow in melee range provoke an AoO? Seeing as Lys doesn't have XBow Mastery... I'm guessing it does?

@Lys, did you not 5 foot step back on purpose?

Female Human Lepidstadt Inspector 5 | Initiative +4 | Perception +10 | Fort +3 Ref +9 Will +7 | HP 45 AC 19

I don't think it does - Lys doesn't enter melee range, the warden does, and assuming Lys meant to move back on her turn, unless the warden has reach I don't think he gets an AoO. The only thing I can see would have an effect would be the range but since Lys has point-blank shot its negated.

That being said AoO can be fuzzy and it's DM's call.

EDIT: Xbow mastery might be the difference here, forgot about that.
