Hskoro Tailfeather |
After his nausea clears up he gives thanks to Arin, "The healing was much appreciated."
When the others are done investigating the goblins' belongings, he heads toward the eastern door and readies to open it when the others gather around.
Arin Qualnoh |
"Huh, not sure what this thing is here, but this second one is quite helpful I must admit!" See DC16 spoiler. Dale would be happy to put that and some of those alchemist fires to use.
Here, let me see it...
Cast Detect Magic
spellcraft: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
It is beyond my sight today...
GM supervillan |
Dale takes a sample from the vats.
Fort save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Fort save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
He finds the mists rising from the vats sickening, but the feeling passes once he emerges from the cloud. The sample itself seems to move with a will of its own, as if alive! Though it reaches towards Dale, the alchemist quickly seals it way in a flask for later study.
You open the eastern door with no mishaps, having gleaned no information from it. Beyond lies a corridor, lit just like the rest of this dungeon. Several doors lead off...
There are two doors in the northern wall, the grey one is fashioned of metal. There is another door at the far eastern end of the corridor.
Arin Qualnoh |
Arin walks down the length of the narrow corridor, looking carefully for traps along the way.
Perception, corridor traps: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Detect Magic, corridor magical auras/traps
I... don't think we want to head north just yet. The worst things are usually kept at the back of dungeons, no?
Perception, Eastern door traps: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Detect Magic, Eastern door magical auras/traps
Dale the Sage |
Dale stuffs the oozy stuff into the bottle and wrestles the cap on "This is some pretty neat stuff. Definitely going to need more study once we get back to the lodge." Dale gives Harold a wink, who just rolls his eyes in response.
Its a good thing his boss Zarta likes him... Thinks Harold as he follows the hairy man down the hallway towards Arin.
Dale walks down the hallway blindly, flipping through the captured formula book like it was a new plant ID book on Christmas. "Oh, I don't have some of these... cure light wounds, enlarge person, expeditious retreat, true strike; lesser restoration, false life, fire breath, resist energy!" Dale walks and talks and summarizes the solid find.
Well, he doesn't yet have fire breath or resist energy. I was planning for sure to pick up resist energy too.
Hskoro Tailfeather |
After Arin checks the hallway, Hskoro follows up behind him to the door on the other end. While passing Dale, "Those sound like useful formulas."
Mythryndyr |
”While I won’t open them, I’ll go ahead and check out the northern doors in case we come back this way...”
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12
GM supervillan |
Myth hears distant noises behind the metal door - discordant and unpleasant, but too faint to discern any detail.
The group moves to the eastern door, following Arin's advice. The door opens.
This room’s magnificent, vaulted ceiling rises to a height of twenty-five feet, and its walls are covered with mahogany bookshelves that nearly reach the ceiling. The once-beautiful wood is chipped, broken, and charred in most places, and the shelves are nearly empty. Most of the books, tomes, and scrolls are piled unceremoniously on the floor in two large heaps that still smoulder feebly. A few cushioned chairs spew stuffing onto the ground, and several once-beautiful paintings lay smashed on the floor, their images ripped and shredded.
There is one further door, in the northern wall.
Arin Qualnoh |
Arin walks casually over to the piles of books, and searches through them for anything that might not be completely destroyed or still contain clues.
I suppose this would have been a comfortable reading room before whatever happened here.
Perception, search books and scrolls: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Malaz Bourreau |
Such works. What a disappointment. Malaz seeks out any magical auras in the area.
Detect Magic
Perception: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16
Ayo of the Radiant Eyes |
Ayo shakes her head with a soft sneer of disapproval, even more than usual. ”Some have no respect for the written word.”
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26
Dale the Sage |
Dale drops to both knees at the sight of the destroyed books and scrolls. Tears freely roll down his cheeks as he looks around the room and the destroyed history of the place. "Damn you goblins!"
Dale the Sage |
Once the shock and sadness passes Dale gets up and looks around the room carefully. "Watch out for tricks and traps. We know how they like to do evil things to books..." He glances at any legible titles but saves any long term reading for later.
Perception, heroism: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 2 = 27
Knowledge (All), heroism: 1d20 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 18 + 2 = 26
Hskoro Tailfeather |
Hskoro steps into the room and goes into a guarded stance as the other examine the books and cry over them.
"Typically goblin handiwork. They destroy anything beyond their intelligence and culture."
GM supervillan |
It takes around 10 minutes of searching, but you manage to turn up a few undamaged tomes. Written in the thassilonian runic script, they have such titles as: Warping the Flesh and Sculpting the Mind; A Fool and His Gold: Karzoug and Xin-Shalast; The Essence of Vanity: Politics and the Illusion of Power in Cyrusian.
A Detect Magic spell reveals several scrolls which Dale deciphers: two scrolls of cure moderate wounds, two scrolls of lesser restoration, and one scroll of remove disease all on the alchemist list.
The divination also turns up a magical paper peacock.
You've found everything of value here. Where next?
Mythryndyr |
Myth nods to his friends. ”Shall we try that metal door in the other room? I detected some unpleasant sounding noises coming behind that door...but they seemed a bit distant and I couldn’t quite make them out...”
Dale the Sage |
Dale points his discerning wayfinder at the odd paper peacock and scans its magical auras with a simple blue button depression Detect Magic. After a few moments he smiles "Looks like we've got an 'origami swarm'. I can't think of a more terrifying attack on a goblin than a swarm of paper words cutting them to shreds." Auto succeed with +17
"Anyone want any of these scrolls? All quite useful if you can activate divine scrolls. Which, of course I can!" He does offer to share but holds them if there are no takers.
"Whichever room you think Mythryndyr. Let's just not take too long deciding or else that book of Warping the Flesh and Sculpting the Mind is going to get a thorough reading by yours truly!" Dale quickly flips to the front page, curious on who the author may be.
Arin Qualnoh |

We could, but we did miss a door from the central gathering room. We might also want to backtrack and see if it has more useful information or supplies.
"Anyone want any of these scrolls? All quite useful if you can activate divine scrolls. Which, of course I can!" He does offer to share but holds them if there are no takers.
Arin raises his hand. Sure, I can make quick use of so many healing scrolls in a pinch. I'll let someone else deal the papercuts. The last part almost sounded like a mild joke, but as usual his facial expression remains unchanged.
Hskoro Tailfeather |
Hskoro's interest perks up when he hears about the scrolls discovered. "Would that Remove Disease scroll get rid of this disease that I am inflicted with?"
Dale the Sage |
"Which disease? I was trying to be discreet... you have numerous..." Dale looks around at the others, trying to keep a straight face.
Bluff, Heroism: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 2 = 16
Malaz Bourreau |
A smile rolls across the aphorites lips. "So, having a little fun, huh? Good for you Hskoro. However, it sounds like you should attempt to be more discerning in your future visits to the Calistrian temple."
Just before any doors are opened, the occultist focuses his attention on his axe. Slowly, the over-sized blade gains mass. "Should be good for a few minutes or so."
Casting Lead Blades on the Butchering Axe ~ 5 minute duration.
Dale the Sage |
Dale looks up from his reading as he hears casting. He looks at Malaz, then at the axe, then back at Malaz "Just curious... are you of sound mind? How frequently are you affected by enchantments?" He takes another nervous look at that axe.
Arin Qualnoh |
Hskoro's interest perks up when he hears about the scrolls discovered. "Would that Remove Disease scroll get rid of this disease that I am inflicted with?"
You don't seem that horribly off?
At -1 for 2 abilities, you won't even take a penalty to related checks. Each ability score heals one point of damage per overnight of rest. Is that all the disease is doing?
GM supervillan |
Both Arin and Hskoro are infected with Tumour Infestation. Arin has used a Revelation to delay the effects for several hours. Hskoro has taken 1 CON and 1 CHA damage, not enough to impose any penalties (you max hp are unaffected Hskoro). However, you do not heal attribute damage whilst still infected; and you will both need to resolve the Diseased condition at the end of the scenario, either by making saving throws or by Remove Disease. A Remove Disease spell does not auto-succeed, but needs a caster level check.
Which way next? I see one vote for the metal door, and one for going back to the central chamber where you fought the oozes which has an unopened door to the east.
Dale the Sage |
Awesome! Been trying to complete that goal for a while now. I didn't find many books in the jungle...
Which Door? 1=Metal, 2=Center East: 1d2 ⇒ 1
"Let's just do the metal since its right here. No sense wasting time. Who knows how much Hskoro has left before a limb falls off." Dale quips.
"But if you want we can try removing your condition. I don't think its in immediate danger of worsening. We'll be sure to work on it before we leave."
Please don't take offense to Dale's joking nature.
Arin Qualnoh |
However, you do not heal attribute damage whilst still infected; and you will both need to resolve the Diseased condition at the end of the scenario, either by making saving throws or by Remove Disease. A Remove Disease spell does not auto-succeed, but needs a caster level check.
Okay, we'll try the saves first and whoever doesn't make it can use the scroll of remove disease (the scroll would be at CL5).
The gnome looks calmly at Dale. It is no matter for now. My condition is not affecting me, as I'm able to hold it at bay with my mysterious divine energies. If my body does not ultimately hold it off, one of the scrolls we found will help. Or perhaps we'll use it to heal Hskoro. Very well, let's take the metal door next. I just hope there's nothing hiding out in that room we missed...
Hskoro Tailfeather |
Hskoro nods, "True the disease has not hit me that hard, perhaps my own system can fight it before needing a spell to break it."
Looks at the metal door and heads for it, since the group has voted for it.
Malaz Bourreau |
"Just curious... are you of sound mind? How frequently are you affected by enchantments?" He takes another nervous look at that axe.
Malaz grins, "That depends who you ask." He notices the concern on Dale's face. "Don't worry friend, I've learned how to be ...judicious in my use of violence. Who knows, you may even come to appreciate it."

Ayo pauses and kneels, removing each of her writing materials one at a time, then writing the following:
”A blade large, yet not

She hands the parchment to Malaz. ”It is not a death poem. Inspiration simply struck.”
GM supervillan |
The metal door creaks open, revealing a short passageway that ends at a similar door. A faint screeching noise seems to coming from beyond the second door.
Dale the Sage |
"Huh. Wonder what that noise is from?" Asks Dale to no one in particular as he tries to place it.

He mutters some celestial to himself and looks again, more closely...

Looking down the hall, "Screeching huh? I'm guessing a flyer, or a something left over from a prehistoric epoch. What's yer guess Dale?"
GM supervillan |
Dale's educated guess is that the awful screeching is one or more goblins attempting to sing!
Dale the Sage |
"I think its more goblins. Sounds like they're attempting to recreate the second symphony of 'ode de barn cats in heat'. Or maybe work through the kinks of the third." He continues flipping through the book Warping the flesh through the use of sonic energy combined with transmutation principles... huh.
"So are we doing this or checking out the other room?" He asks, seeing as the group is spooked by the hallway.
Its a cramped area so I've just had Dale stay where he is.
Hskoro Tailfeather |
Hskoro slowly steps into the corridor, watching carefully for traps before reaching the door.

Malaz graciously bows as he accepts the poem. He carefully tucks it away into his pack. "My thanks to you, though it does seem as if I wrote most of it myself. Who would have guessed I had that skill just waiting to be tapped?"
Ayo bristles at Malaz’s comment. ”Part of the art of haiku lies in the arrangement, another in the juxtaposition of images, and yet another in the metric form. The choice of words is but one of many artistic decisions. Further, I intended it as a ‘found poem,’ which is form dedicated to finding the poetry in the everyday, the elevation of the ordinary into the sublime.”
GM supervillan |
I'm liking Ayo's haiku :)
The metal door opens.
This room’s ceiling is thirty feet high. Halfway up the smooth stone walls, the room widens slightly, creating a narrow ledge that runs the entire perimeter, with exits to the east and south. The floor in the lower portion is sand, clumped and stained in places by blood. Bones, broken armor, and shattered weapons are scattered about the floor, and a musty smell permeates the space. Metal doors lead out from the lower level to the west and south. You have entered on the lower level in the south.
The source of the awful screeching is now obvious - echoing through the chamber is a cacophonous goblin song - the singer skulks under a ledge across the sand from you.
As we fled, sure we were dead,
We rolled the boulder before us.
Poor us!
Heads dust!
Yes, we rolled the boulder before us.
Then suddenly, as Gugnack sneezed,

But happy day, hip, hip, hooray!

New home!

Yes, the boulder has shown a new home!

Just re-reading the room description and looking at the map, it's apparent that the ledge is a wider area than the floor, so there is no "under the ledge". I've adjusted positions of the singer and Myth accordingly. You will enter the sandy chamber from the space that Myth now occupies.

Dale notes that the flying goblins are heavily mutated. In addition to clumsy flight speed 30 they have wicked claws that look like they could grab a small target; forked tongues that no doubt give them an enhanced sense of smell scent; and Dale theorises from their rapid, short movements that these mutant goblins also heal rapidly Fast Healing 1. The chemically-enhanced scholar reasons that these mutations might be linked in some way to the theme of 'fleshwarping' mentioned in the books that were salvaged earlier.
"Glibeldring's song is good and mighty

Catch the stumpies, gut them all

The goblin singer continues her awful song - the screeching noise is almost enough to make you sick. You do feel a real pain at the noise. She brandishes a loaded crossbow.
The three remaining flying mutant goblins dive to the attack; they seem to positively enjoy the noise of their companion.
