Kolnral lives not far from the Feedmill with his wife and newborn
daughter. After the poisoning, he can be found at home, recovering from
the injuries suffered during the bar brawl. He is happy to talk to Sool
about the night of Bort’s poisoning. "I served drinks while Trin served the food. Amora was busy in the kitchen while Phinick assisted around the bar and kitchen."

"Most of my interactions that night were with Delma, as she prepared drinks for me to serve to thirsty guests. The last thing I clearly recalls is accidentally bumping into Eallom, which caused the farmer to spill his drink and start the brawl. When I was knocked to the floor, he saw Phinick fleeing the bar, but the rest is a blur."

------------------------------------------------------------------

Targen Fulst seems to be in his eighties and lives in a house adjacent to the feedmill. His gait is unsteady and mostly seems to mobilise with a wooden wheelchair made from a modified pushcart. The grandfatherly old man starts taking you on a tour around town along a dirt path.

Targen is proud to talk about the Feedmill, the town’s only major business. Targen opened the Feedmill more than fifty years ago, before the Goblinblood Wars. His brother died in that conflict, along with much of Targen’s extended family. The town itself avoided the worst of the conflict, which occurred primarily to the west.

Plaguestone: The path next leads to the plaguestone, which was used to give food and aid to those suffering from the plague. He recounts how everyone suspected a local witch named Silwyth of starting the plague, and after Silwyth caught it herself, she cursed the town’s only priest before she died. Soon after, Father Bolgrist contracted the plague and died. The witch had a daughter named Vilree who stuck around her mother’s home for a few years, then probably died or ran off. Targen does not bother to recount the fact that Silwyth tried to stop the plague, or that Father Bolgrist was the first to accuse Silwyth of spreading it.

Dead Homes: After visiting the plaguestone, Targen guides you through the north side of town where most of the plague victims lived. Most of their homes are empty and in a terrible state of disrepair. Only the very poor or desperate call this part of town home. Targen notes that anyone with coin lives on the south side of town.

Drunk Shepherd’s Path: Leaving the north side of town, Targen wants to be walked along this old shepherd’s path that wanders through the turnip farms around town. He mentions that they were once sheep pastures, but the last large flock left town years ago.

Old Shrine: The path leads to an old shrine in the middle of an ancient copse of oak trees. Targen notes as the group wanders through the old woods that while the shrine is currently dedicated to Gozreh, it has served other purposes. He claims that druids used to gather at the shrine long ago. Since Father Bolgrist’s death, nobody worships here anymore.

Etran’s Hill: On the way back home, the path leads past Etran’s Hill. Looming to the town’s southeast, this hill was the site of the first home built in the area. Targen notes that Etran spent his fortune founding the town, only to die in a fire that consumed him and his family because the house was too far away from the well and the river. This is how Etran’s Folly got its name.

The path then leads back to the Feedmill. Targen nods off and naps for the last leg of the journey, and upon arriving home, he complains that it took too long and he is late for lunch. Delma thanks you for their help before taking her father inside to get him some food.

Still resentful of being kept in town against his will, Morsun tries to find some work to do to help offset the cost of the suspects' room and board. He advertises his skill as a locksmith and trapsmith, but he'll willingly labor at any task. He's not some lazy freeloader.

As he works, he'll try and listen for any insights about the poisoning, but he can't think of any specific take on it that the others aren't already pursuing.

Sool directs several questions to the man.

"Phinick was the goblin, correct? How long has he worked in the tavern?"

"I believe the stablehand intimated that Phinick runs off and hides frequently. Is this true?"

<?>

"Tell me about the bard who was playing. Was he a local fellow, or just passing through like us?"

<?>

"How well did you know Bort, the dwarf we arrived with?"

<?>

"Please think back carefully to when you bumped into Eallom. Did you trip on anything? Or were you perhaps pushed? Perhaps Eallom leaned back and bumped into you? Were you just not looking at where you were going? Try and remember, it may be important."

<?>

"Was it out of character for Eallom to start the fight, would you say? Or is he a person with a temper?"

<?>

"Have there been any unusual or suspicious deaths in town over the past few months?"

<?>

How does one Sense Motive in 2e? Because Sool would attempt to do so if possible while questioning Kolnrol.

"Hiya, Targen! Nice to meet you! Wow, you're old! I bet you know all kinds of important things, eh?" Emri exclaims as she shakes the old man's hand in greeting. "My name's Emri! Pleasure to meet you! Nice chair."

As they stroll Emri recounts the tale of poison and murder from the night before. "Do you know anyone who'd be capable of making poison?"

"What about enemies? Bort's been to town plenty of times, right? Do you know if he had dealings with anyone in town that were... less than prosperous? Did he get in any fights the last time he came to town? Or did any townsfolk seem to dislike him?"

"The Feedmill's yours? Nice. No wonder you were mayor so long, eh? Important man with a head for business and all..."

When they reach the plaguestone, Emri gets contemplative. "A plague struck your town and you all blamed a local for it? A local that tried to cure it? Why? What was wrong with her that everyone suspected she was behind it?" After the old man responds she asks, "Can you tell me more about Father Bolgrist? And about the child; Vilree? How come no one knows what happened to her? She just disappeared and no one bothered to look into it? Or was the good sheriff stymied?"

"The Dead Homes?" Emri lets out a whistle. "Quite a creepy town you've got here!" She keeps an eye out for anyone destitute enough to have to live here. If she finds anyone, or a home that looks occupied, she approaches and introduces herself. If she finds anyone who doesn't look like a criminal she'll give them a copper (or a silver if they're young/a family). She has a total of 4 copper and 3 silver she could spend this way.

"Even the sheep left? Huh...." By now, Emri's pretty sure this town's not a place she wants to live. ...or stay for a month...

Emri nods along with Sazen. "Come on, Targen. My friend here is a priestess of Erastil. Let's check out the shrine. She'll offer it her blessing or something. Might bring the town some luck!" She pushes the old man's wheelchair to the shrine and snoops around, adding under her breath, "This town needs it...".

"Well, that's a morbid bit of history," Emri points out after hearing about the tragedy of Etran's Hill. "Is it haunted?"

Emri drives Old Targen up to his door and hands him off to Delma. "It took too long?" Emri laughs. "Nonsense! It's the best walk you've ever had! You're welcome, pal! See ya' next time! Thanks for the tour."

"So did anyone not like Bort?", Throkk asks bluntly.

@Morson

Some locals blame Phinnick but this seems entirely based on him being a goblin. Some others fear perhaps the ghost of the witch has arisen but others point out that Bort never knew her.

@Sool

"Yes Phinnick is the goblin, he's been around for maybe two years. Anytime a fight breaks out he runs away, he'll come back in a few days."

"The bard is a local, not the best but the best we have."

"I doubt I could say I knew Bort terribly well, though they were entertaining his stories were always far fetched. He was nice though and dependable. You could rely on him to come back with your order. He'd always order the same meal too with little variation.

"I just bumped into him, I can't say anything stood out til he got angry."

"Eallom is alright but he enjoys a good brawl."

@Sool Continued
"No I mean, its a small town. Nothing that comes to mind."

Its a secret roll the GM makes.

@Sazen, Targen is too tired to go in there but you can double back after... I'm counting on it.

Targen looks at Emri "I've seen a lot. I can't think of anyone who uses poison."

"Enemies, no. He did his business and moved on to the next village. Long winded. He traded with pretty much everyone though."

"She was a witch. You can never be sure of a witch and Father Bolgrist was very convincing. He was a priest of Abadar. Good man. I like tk think the girl moved away and forgot about her mothers witchy ways but she could just as easily have died in the wilds. I don't think many wanted to find her."

"They used to be full... that said go down the right forrest trail in the Chitterwood and you'll find only ruins... We've faired better than many."

"I'm getting hungry, its just a barn now anyway..."

"Haunted? Its never been before anyway."

If ye are done with Tarfen ye can double back to the barn.

Sool has already returned to the inn by the time the group is done walking the mayor. He is sitting at a table in the corner with a flagon of mead in front of him. He is holding his chameleon up on the back of his hand, and they are staring intently but quite peacefully at one another. It's a bit creepy, but he's done this occasionally during the caravan journey. It seems to be something he does to meditate or think.

He breaks from his reverie and lowers his arm as the others come in. The chameleon begins to slowly climb up his sleeve. He tosses some bread to Throkk.

"What's this about a barn?" he asks.

"Oh, delighted too." answers Sool with as much enthusiasm as he can muster. He seems to be trying to make an effort. "Bort has some connection to this village, beyond passing through it. We have to learn what that is. And I suspect whatever that connection is, it's an old one, perhaps even from the time of the plague."

"I'm still considering motive. This was clearly murder. So why does one murder? If one merely wishes to kill for the sake of killing, there was no reason to poison only one person. With a poison that powerful at their disposal, they could have poisoned multiple people if they wished. Honestly it would have been easier. But they didn't. Only Bort was killed."

"People can be murdered for political reasons. Or to make a point. Or a statement. But no one has set forward any such statement to lend context to the act."

"People can be murdered in service to the higher goal of robbing them. But as far as we know, no one benefits monetarily from this act. In fact, his caravan workers are likely going to be out of work now, and Bort had no great fortune that we know of."

"His murder might have been accidental. Someone else might have been the target. We can't discount that yet."

"But personally, I learn toward the final possibility. A personal grudge of some sort. Revenge. Murder to satisfy the private spite of someone. It doesn't appear to be for any known overt act -- Bort was well-liked, and no one seems to have anything against him"

"Bort was a talker though. It was well known that he had a particular liking for the turnip stew in this town, and could be counted on to order it. This location for the murder may be convenient and incidental -- it might have been someone from outside the town who hired someone to carry out the act here."

"But if this were a case of a personal grudge so deep it led to murder, then I suspect whoever is responsible is nearby, even if they used a proxy to carry out the act. They would be watching to ensure that the vengeance was enacted. And they might very well be using one of these abandoned buildings around the village to plan the act."

"Say... from an old abandoned shrine? Or some such place."

He takes a final drink of mead, then stands.

"Shall we?"

The barn has holes in the ceiling, you can see canvas sacks, and a rope stored here though the area is currently largely bare. A few weathered carvings show signs of woodlice having badly damaged them.

As you explore the area something stirs in the rafters above and descend towards you.

Drain Damage Sazen: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Drain Damage Throkk: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Sazen and Throkk have Drain 1

When a creature successfully drains you of blood or life force, you become less healthy. Drained always includes a value. You take a status penalty equal to your drained value on Constitution-based checks, such as Fortitude saves. You also lose a number of Hit Points equal to your level (minimum 1) times the drained value, and your maximum Hit Points are reduced by the same amount. For example, if you’re hit by an effect that inflicts drained 3 and you’re a 3rd-level character, you lose 9 Hit Points and reduce your maximum Hit Points by 9. Losing these Hit Points doesn’t count as taking damage.

Each time you get a full night’s rest, your drained value decreases by 1. This increases your maximum Hit Points, but you don’t immediately recover the lost Hit Points.

"Thank you kindly!" Emri exclaims. Then she scampers off, looking VERY SERIOUS as she inspects the barn/shrine for signs of suspicious activity, poison, the funny smell from earlier, and footprints that don't match Metmon's...

"You say this place was a shrine of Gozreh and has been used as a sacred spot for other gods at other times?" says Sool. "There must be something special about this place. Perhaps some caves or unusual trees or ponds or something of the sort? Or perhaps this place is on top of an older structure?"

Throkk rummages around, calmer and unbothered by any stink or gore.

Is there a house nearby that Morsun could sneak off to while Metmon is distracted?

"Might have been once... but the reasons are long forgotten. Now it's just the place where there is a shrine... until it became a barn." He peers over at Sazen "You're a follower of Erastil then I take it?"

The barn doesn't have any signs of suspicious activity or secret entrances despite a thorough check.

Morsun moves off to the house as silent as a shadow. A younger male dwarf is inside. There's not much suspicious... or of great value that he can see. It's a fairly typical farm house from what he can see.

Throkk shrugs, draws a dagger, and begins to pick some of the worst of the dirt from under his fingernails.

Sazen smiles and says I am. Would you like to learn more about him?

Not wanting to get in more trouble than he already is, Morsun watches the dwarf inside for any suspicious behavior. If there's anything else that's noticeably worth checking out, he'll inspect it also.

"Did you know Bort? The fellow who was the victim of the poisoning?" asks Sool.

The farmer shakes his head. "I know enough about Erastil, I respect him and give appropriate offerings around planting and harvest time in particular. In truth Abadar holds my greatest devotion but I have considered many times over the previous years that it is a shame this place has turned into a seldom used barn."

"If you wish to repair and consecrate it to Erastil I would not object. I can set my son to assist you on the mundane repairs, I can get by without him for a time."

Sool wrote:

"I knew him, he was a reasonable enough man. I traded with him on occasion but you'd be hard pressed to find any in town who haven't at some point or another."

Morson can see the young dwarf is only performing chores related to the farm. There's nothing else of note that he observes and is able to slide back into the barn without anyone else noticing.
