Otto O'Read |
"Is everyone fully healed after that unpleasantness?" Otto asks while he tends to a small scratch on his dinosaur.
It appears I forgot to do this earlier...
CLW on Allison: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 Leaves her at 1 point of dmg
As they get ready to investigate further, Otto again uses his wand of Heightened Awareness on himself. He also uses his last pearl of power to recover his Thunderstomp spell.
Spellcraft (Magical Identify DC 23): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Otto casts Detect Magic but cannot determine what was the underlying magic of the mummy's chamber.
Was this Identify DC 23 check for the room? Or for the staff? If it was for the room Otto will try separately to determine what the staff is.
Otto also does not know either Azlanti or Aklo, and looks at the runes on the journal uncomprehendingly.
Once the Professor identifies the trap on the far door in the next room, Otto also casts Detect Magic on it, but he lacks any particular knowledge of peculiar Arcana subjects, much preferring his studies of the natural world.
GM Netherpongo |
The last magical identify check was for the staff, not the room. I spent a while this morning trying to figure out what a DC for the room would be and I wasn't able to find guidance from the books.
Professor Baldeck Kaldosian |
Decering wayfinder for detect magic. For traps, mechanical traps the rule to the best of my knowledge is, "Perception check detects a trap before it is triggered. The DC of this check depends on the trap itself. Success generally indicates that the creature has detected the mechanism that activates the trap, such as a pressure plate, odd gears attached to a door handle, and the like. Beating this check by 5 or more also gives some indication of what the trap is designed to do." But, for magical ones, I guess it would be arcane for ongoing effect, but you are right it is not clear.
Arcana: 10 + 18 = 28
If it seems safe enough to go near to work on Professor will look around for other dangers.
Perception: 1d20 + 24 + 1d6 ⇒ (11) + 24 + (2) = 37
And attempt to disable the trap.
Disable Device: 1d20 + 28 ⇒ (13) + 28 = 41
GM Netherpongo |
A thorough investigation of the trap as Professor Kaldosian disarms it reveals that you were standing on the initial effect area. The trap was designed to fill grooves in the floor with burning oil, some of which would run below the door into the next room.
Map is updated for door opening.
This chamber has no floor, only walls and an open pit below. The black and slightly oily walls are riddled with small holes just large enough to fit a hand or arm into--but creatures that resemble eels with leathery wings are nesting in them. A small landing and a door lie on the opposite side of the pit at the same level.
The roof of the chamber is 40' above you. Your darkvision (if any) is insufficient to see the bottom of the pit.

GM Netherpongo |
I can't find a reference anywhere to what olaggi are other than the seugathi monster entry. Also, the scenario called for Knowledge (Dungeoneering) to identify them. So, I'm going to say that they're aberrations (ignoring Handle Animal...just too alien to work with) and non-intelligent.
Toshiro Takamura |
I can't find a reference anywhere to what olaggi are other than the seugathi monster entry.
that's strange. that they were included without stats
Deno'thar |
“ Well, anyone want to fly down and see whats in that pit? If not I guess thats a dead end.” Deno’thar asks, clearly not meaning himself .
He also trys detect magic both up and down to see if there is anything hidden worth recovering within range.
GM Netherpongo |
If it isn't clear, the passageway continues on the other side of the pit.
Deno'thar |
Deno’thar looks closely at the pit looking for a way across or other hazards besides the animals.

If he sees nothing he asks if anyone has any suggestions, because climbing over those things ravenous mouths is likely to lead to all sorts of infected bites. Perhaps the professor could fly across and secure a rope?
Professor Baldeck Kaldosian |
"I can whip-up a spider climb and make my way around. I can fly over if you all like. I can bring a rope with me, either way. I will go first if we decide how to proceed It may be hard to secure a rope on the other side."
Professor looks down the pit trying to decide if he is curious enough to go down.
Deno'thar |
“ whatever you prefer. I warned you about the biting already... Actually, let me try something “ Deno’thar says as he grabs a small rock, casts light on it, and tosses it down into the pit.
Otto O'Read |
Otto frowns, though his signifer mask hides his expression. "I could cast Air Walk on myself or another, and I could transform myself into a flying dinosaur, but I am afraid that - rope or no rope - Allison will have great difficulty crossing this pit, even if we can find a way of dealing with these creatures."
GM, is there a ledge going around the edge of the pit? And if so, how wide is it? Also, I assume that spells that target animals will not be effective against the eel-creatures?
Otto has one Air Walk spell prepared, which he could cast on anyone in the party, including himself or his dinosaur.
If he wild shapes into a flying dinosaur it'll be his last use of wild shape for the day, and since he's not really built to fight in dino form, it would likely mean spending the rest of the adventure in normal Oread form. Although he can cast spells in dino form, I don't believe that he can speak or do things like manipulate rope, etc.
GM Netherpongo |
Otto: no ledge around the pit. The distance looks like 25' with a medium size (squeezing for Allison) opening on the other side. I'm ruling that the olaggi aren't animals.
If Allison knows the Air Walk trick, you could cast it on her and ride her across, maybe. Or push her if she doesn't know it.
In the meantime, I was going to call for Perception checks, but this is funnier. I don't want to make your characters squeezing when this starts, so Professor Kaldosian hasn't moved up yet. As a result, only Deno'thar can see the creature right now.
Deno'thar casts Light on a rock and drops it, but it strikes a hard surface before it falls very far. The surface moves, and it is very, very big.

Professor cast fly from his armor and moves up and over the pit. To set a flank for the rest of the team.
Can someone move me. I don't have access to the maps right now. Reception is bad. GM can I trust to to put together Professor in a position adequate for tactical mind?
Otto O'Read |

Otto concurs with Deno'thar and adds, "And it likes to shoot webs to entangle its foes! Beware."
Otto casts Lead Blades on his scythe and waits for the creature to ascend further. 1 minute duration for Lead Blades.
GM Netherpongo |
Professor Kaldosian: given the critter's position 20' down the pit, flanking would require you to go below it & probably provoke. Did you want to skip that part? I moved you in, but the rest is a height question.
Professor Baldeck Kaldosian |
I ment a position to flank should the creature come up. Basically the other side of the pit. Thank you for checking though.

Professor Kaldosian: how much reach do you have to get to the critter with? I don't see Long Arm in your active effects, and it was 15' away. Separately, I think your weapon isn't good aligned which would give it some DR, but if I'm wrong let me know.

Bebilith Damage Taken: 14 (provisional on answer to my question above)
The monster continues its assault against Professor Kaldosian, but this time its strikes seem far more accurate as it bites and claws at him. The bite hit AC 38 for 16 damage and a Fortitude save vs rot. The first claw hit AC 39 for 16 damage. The second claw missed. I think those both hit you, even with Reduce Person up.

GM Netherpongo |
Professor Kaldosian: you are correct that I rolled very high on those attacks, but please don't go looking in the GM spoilers or mine creature data to make guesses about my rolls, whichever you did.
Also, I've been forgetting it but we could use a Fly check from you to hover. If your bonus is high enough that you don't need to roll, just let me know that.

Otto casts Air Walk upon himself (duration 70 minutes) and then squeezes through the doorway and up above the creature, scythe in hand, ready to do battle.
Standard action to cast, move action to move into the room with 40' movement speed
Allison lurks outside, looking hungry and annoyed at the close quarters.
Otto's reach with the scythe is 10'. His AC is 24.
GM Netherpongo |
Coreleus: you didn't have line of sight from your former location. One more square would have done it (barely), though, so I took the liberty of moving your character up one more square, letting you get your first attack off.
Coreleus moves up and fires an arrow that sinks deeply into the Abyssal creature's carapace while Professor Kaldosian adds a pair of critical attacks.
The bebilith bites at Otto as he moves into the wide chamber, but with Deno'thar's assistance the large druid is able to avoid the attack.
When the bebilith lashes out at Professor Kaldosian again, he expertly defends himself against the attack and finishes off the monstrosity.
Combat is over! How are you getting across the pit?
Professor Baldeck Kaldosian |
Looking at the other side is there a place to secure a grappling hook?
"Does anyone have a piton and hammer?"
Otto O'Read |
"What if I just carry each of you across?"
With Air Walk up, I think Otto should be able to do this without great difficulty? Though I imagine that his dinosaur may be too heavy for him...
Deno'thar |
Don't suppose you have a scroll of ant haul for Allison?
Otto O'Read |
Otto mutters and shuffles his feet. "Um, no. I, um, forgot."
This is a new animal companion for him, so I'm still figuring out what sorts of options I'll need. Seems like a few scrolls of Carry Companion would be advised...
Deno'thar |
Well maybe we should just go across and see what we find. Scoop me up like a baby, or analogously a snack, depending on how much the troll preclivities are showing through.
Otto O'Read |
Since there may well be something waiting for us on the other side of the door, and I don't think there's room for everyone to stand on the far side before we open the door, the order of who gets ferried probably matters. I.e. who wants to open the door and spend a round saying hello while I ferry the next person over?
Deno'thar |
“ The professor takes point on avoiding any trap, since he is still running on angel power. You carry me and I act as a glorified protector familiar if we encounter hostiles. Our arrow bestowing friend last, since he can act from back there. ”
A tidy familiar... Deno’thar adds while picking up his wand and storing it in a wrist sheath.
GM Netherpongo |
As Toshiro and Coreleus consider climbing down in the hole, they are reminded of the bite-y looking olaggi. Feel free to do so if you like.
If Otto wants to carry people across, that's probably fine. Allison might be a bit much, and there's no good way to determine her weight unfortunately. We could calculate out exact burdens and so forth, but I'm not feeling like it. The larger problem is that until the door is opened, there's nowhere to put people over there except the 5' platform really, so timing will be important. Let's say a move action to pick someone up (or a readied standard on their part) and moving with a player will halve your speed.
