With the end of the book are we up to a Lvl 3? ;)

Dark Archive

Whoops, typos. You're done with Part 2 (of 3) of Book 1. So, yes, you will level up at the end of the book, but you are not at the end of the book yet. You have to go save Asanatown from a militia-backed coup first!

Sorry, been flat out today. Numerous video meetings, attempting to chase up student submissions and family responsibilities have meant my game postings have been taking place in chunks here and there.

Given ooc posts are a bit quicker, I'll post the jist of what I'm thinking.

Firstly, what are the chances of tracking down a concealed compartments armor upgrade? link

I was also thinking about incorporating a Trojan horse kind of deal along with our delivery crew cover - to smuggle some of our gear (or some of us) past the check point? Or just fabricate a cover story about delivery of a box of random parts and waste.

Oh and to go along with this, doctoring up a delivery ticket on company letter head, so to speak to a contact housed in the destination building.

Yeah we need some plan as Vedrir is socially awkward, I second the idea of a parcel in which we can hide some of the weapons. Alternatively can we buy or make:
Glamered fusions?

Otherwise, we will all have weapons covered in duck tape and paper ;)

Scarab Sages

I think making stuff requires magic dust (money) we don't have..and I think it would also take more time then we have to make one for each weapon.

Maybe filling a big box with random parts and hiding the weapons among them would be our best bet.

I'm pretty ok-ish without weapons myself, but I understand that people will want to keep their stuff without without getting arrested.

Dark Archive

Unfortunately, with the pseduo-lock down taking place in Asanatown, it'll be difficult (certainly not quick) to buy anything related to weapon fusions or armor upgrades.

The gist of Nib and Dr. Taeress's recommendation was to just use the material on hand and maybe a semi-decent cover story. For the first checkpoint you were at there weren't any invasive searches or Starfinder-equivalent metal detectors; with the Collective consolidating power, speed takes priority over an absolutely air-tight story.

Gotcha. I thought that'd be the case but best to check.

In that case, I wonder about hiding them in plain sight? Or perhaps more accurately, offer up a sacrifical lamb or two.

By that, we try our to stash/disguise our weapons but openly carry a weapon or two that will be confiscated. We can attempt to feign ignorance of the "no carry" decree. Perhaps even throw in something about company policy, etc, but in the end hand them over (don't want to seem too, eager).

I'm sure someone has a suggestion to greatly improve this or an even better idea, so let's hear them!

Nomyra's fine without weapons (yay, Armor Storm), so she can totally have a pistol get confiscated or something.

Ran out of time tonight but should have a post tomorrow!

During this weekend I might not be able to post everyday. I will resume my regular schedule from tuesday

Flash and Farol - no problem and no problem. Enjoy the weekend!

That's one heck of an effective check-post..it makes you preemptively leave your stuff behind so you don't have to do an actual check on the stuff people do bring with them ;)

Dark Archive

No rush on posting everyone, just wanted to make sure things were clear with the situation in-game. Reach out if I need to clarify!

All good. I think you've explained the situation perfectly - it's my own decisions that I'm in doubt of!

Should I? Shouldn't I? Oh, what's going to happen?

Dark Archive

So it's been so long since we've had a fight I can't remember if I was supposed to give you all automatic rolls to identify creatures you encounter. I think that was something we said I was doing, and I never rolled for you. Sorry! It seems like it won't matter this fight, but going forward I'll remember.

I can't quite remember clearly, but am I right in thinking that our characters obtained the map of Horizon House and would have knowledge of the layout?

Would they be able to get a sense of which areas would be likely to house the prisoners? (Or we as players can at least discuss our thoughts)

The reason I ask is that following our current heading in an anti-clockwise direction will end up taking us through pretty much every room in the building. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but given we could very well be on a clock depending on what, if anything, happened back at the entry, it might be best for us to try to make our way there in a more direct manner. This may mean backtracking and trying to cross the inner courtyard. Of course, this might also take us past watchful guards/security...

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts/input.

As for direction, unless we know we're heading the wrong way I think we should continue.

The characters managed to find the Horizon House layout, so they have access to the full map. Of course it wasn't updated with "we're keeping the prisoners here" since the Sunrise Collective took over, but you know everything that's visible in the slides.

AFlashInTime wrote:

Well, that's mighty inconsiderate of them! Very unhelpful.

Just so you know, Puzzle will be noting this and deducting a couple of stars from the rating when completing the "How was your visit today?" survey on departure.

Thanks though, that latter part was what I was wanting to confirm.

Dark Archive

Hey folks, just checking in you're not waiting on me for anything. Happy weekend everyone!

Thanks for the save, GM Flash.

My apologies about messing up the turn order there - was worried I was delaying things with not getting to post yesterday and in my haste misremembered exactly where we were up to.

Puzzle's sonic attack made me think of this Order of the Stick comic.

Also, I described the shot as a "thunderous clap of thunder". What's next, a flaming ball of flame? An acidic dart of acid? Icy bolt of ice? High quality world describing here, folks.

Ha ha, we don't need to talk about how often things like that end up in my writing.

Ha that's too funny!

Coincidentally, during a conversation with my brother-in-law yesterday, he mentioned recently picking up a book by a favourite author and noticing that, a few lines down on the opening chapter, it said something along the lines of "... tendrils of dark hair fell across her face like tendrils."

Don't feel too bad. I know I've certainly done it during class discussion before, too - probably something as profound as "compound interest is different than simple interest because the interest compounds over time." ;p

(I totally missed it when reading the post by the way.)

Something I never realized till now;

photon mode says; While photon-attuned, you gain a +1 insight bonus to damage rolls.

I always though that was just for weapon attacks or at the very least things that require an attack roll. But now that I re-read it this also applies to spell damage so I should have been doing a tiny bit more damage with my hazard spells (1d3+1 instead of 1d3) for a while now.

Fear my something like 33% increase in damage sometimes! *insert evil laugh*

Hello everyone! I hope this finds you all well.

A few housekeeping items:

First, we are still probably a few weeks away but will soon be coming to the end of Dawn of Flame book 1! As I posted way back on 13 October 2019, my goal was to finish book 1 with you all at a minimum, and I think we're going to make it. While I don't think anybody would call this a "fast play" of the AP, I think we've done a reasonably good job of keeping things moving along. I, for one, would like to continue with book 2 if you all are on board with continuing (assuming you survive the rest of book 1!). Give it some thought and let me know which way you're leaning.

Second, I'm tentatively planning on GMing a PbP table (or two?) of SFS 2-10: Corporate Interests. I'd love for anybody here to participate; feel free to let me know here or private message me if you're interested! The game(s) will probably kick off the week after PaizoCon Online; once I have a better idea who wants to participate from this group and another one, I'll probably post in Flaxseed Station to fill remaining spots.

Third, speaking of PaizoCon Online, I'll be participating pretty heavily (as I expect some of you will as well) in Roll20 scenarios (seven in five days). I should be able to keep the PbP posting here to 1/day, but there might be a day or two where I can't put together a quality post. If that happens, I'll try to post a heads up here.

On a personal aside, it's more than a little bittersweet to be playing everything associated with PaizoCon online. I know I'll miss seeing everyone from the regular con attendees to the special Guests of Honor (specifically Kate! Applause!). When we get back to in-person conventions, if any of us ever wind up at the same one I'd love to get together and have some games on a physical table top.

Thanks for making this PbP campaign something I've looked forward to over the last several months. I'm really excited to see if you manage to finish bringing down the Sunrise Collective and freeing Asanatown, or if you all die in the attempt!

I was just thinking about this over the weekend! I'm having a great time and would love to continue for as long as you continue running it. Thank you for running it for us.

Enjoy Paizocon everyone who's participating!

Edit: and thanks for the invitation, but I've already played Corporate Interests. A great scenario!

Ooo I hadn't realised that! In that case, put me down as potentially interested as well (provided you are okay with someone having played it previously).

Kate, I'm sure not being able to go do Guest of Honor events in person is definitely a downer. Not that the two are comparable, but I was really looking forward to going to Origins and voicing Ehu at the first running of 3-00 (which I'd worked out with the RVC), which is now on an indefinite hold and probably won't actually happen. I hope this doesn't come across like I know anything, because I don't, but I try to focus on the positives about what hasn't changed, what we can still do, all of the extra time I'm getting to spend with my family, and so on. This whole situation sucks, but I keep reminding myself that it's when, not if, we get out on the other side.

Regarding 2-10, it is repeatable! I definitely don't have a problem with people replaying (that's why there are repeatables, and nova replays, and jadnura replays, and have "I play a lot" replays been officially implemented yet?). I have three folks from other games express interest (with a 3 and two 4s), so pending Farol and Revvy we'll have 5-7 players. If we get up to seven I'll probably break it off into two tables (probably high low but maybe both will be low) and post on Flaxseed for filling out the tables.

--This hopefully will be the last 2-10 update posted here from me. I'll reach out in about a week on it with a link. Back to your regularly scheduled Dawn of Sun AP!--

I'd be happy to play Corporate Interests with y'all, but I'm also happy to skip it if I would push the player count to 7.

With regards to continuing this game I am down to that. I just need to spend a bit more time on Vedrir as I really feel like I am doing way better job RP'ing my regular SFS PC's compared to him :( And I am really a better player than what I present here, for which I am sorry :( I will do better.

With regards to Corporate Interests unfortunately I have only 2 PC's of level 3 (all others are lower) and they are all in the games. I am just finishing that scenario (run by no one else but Revvy ;)) playing a pregen. And playing a pregen is not for me, meaning I can't properly RP them :( So I can't participate unless we finish the first book before the game happens and I can apply the chronicle and Lvl up one of my others PC ;)

Scarab Sages

I'd very much like to continue with part 2. I'm enjoying this game a lot. Compared to most other pbp games I've been in this has a much higher roleplay per post content on average which I'm enjoying and I'm trying to match.
And I'm curious to see how the story progresses and where it leads

As for playing Corporate Interest; as Farol mentioned I'm currently running the scenario myself and I'm afraid that even though it's repeatable there isn't a lot of variation between plays and the experience it a bit too recent for me to fully enjoy another game of it right now.

Thanks for the invite, but I'll skip this run for now.

I hope everyone who's attending enjoys their virtual PaizoCon games as best as they can as a substitute for the real deal. And GM don't worry if you can't make it to a pbp post during that time. We'll be here when you get back to it ;)

Is it wrong that whenever I check the Gameplay posts I hope that the squox is still alive so it can keep biting Vedrir? Normally I really cheer more for the PCs than the "bad guys" (despite playing all of the "bad guys" when I GM :P) but the mental image of this aggressive attacking squirrel-fox creature biting the kasatha over and over is just really funny to me.

It does conjure some amusing imagery, especially in light of three of his companions seemingly leaving him to his own devices! Not to mention that it has had some pretty good rolls...

Yes it is bad:P I have the same, I am cheering for the squox.

Just for the record I am not angry or anything that people went for the lashunta (most of them - thank you Revvy!). I just had that feeling when Nomyra was posting 'Oh yeah everyone will assume that the squox can be easily taken down so they will ignore it' which means that Vedrir is no tied into a knife fight with a small rodent :P

And seriously considering the alternative when Kit tries to shoot it with his rifle as the squox is running all over Vedrir is just as comical.

It reminds me a bit all D&D computer games (Baldurs gate etc.) when your first mission was usually to fight some rats in the basement, it's just like that :P

I think this was the most entertaining PbP fight I've ever been a part of.

I think it's worth noting, now that it's over, that the squox never missed a bite and never failed a check. Truly a worthy adversary for Vedrir.

Congratulations, Nomyra. That's the mathematical closest I've come to killing an character in Starfinder by massive damage.

My tracking on Nomyra's SP/HP. See if I did the math wrong anywhere.

Beginning with 14/14 SP and 18/18 HP. Nomyra took 6 damage from the first lashunta guard's longsword. 8/14, 18/18.

Nomyra then took a full round of magic missiles from the technomancer for 13. 0/14, 13/18

Nomyra took a second full round of magic missiles for 7. 0/14, 6/18

Then a 21 HP damage jolting surge took Nomyra to "-15/18" HP, where reaching -18 would've meant instant death.

As it is, Nomyra reverts to 0 HP, unconscious, and dying.

Question regarding pacing right now (as we near the end of the book)

Normally I move ahead to the next room after two people say "go", but I wonder if it'd be better to let everybody chime in before we do so? I can post the equipment available in the room later today if people are looking, but I was thinking about waiting until Sunday or Monday after everyone that wants to has had a chance to talk/RP before we go into the next room.

On the one hand, APs are definitely long, so I've been trying to move things along without needing 100% concurrence beforehand every time. On the other hand, with the second half of the Horizon House it's felt maybe a little bit like I'm not giving you all adequate time to RP between the last four rooms (all combats) all in a row? After all, you faced off against an imp, four Collective soldiers and a shotalashu, a mystic with his squox, and now two more guards and a technomancer, one right after the other. Wanting to give you all a minute to breathe if you need it.

Any feedback re pacing is appreciated.

Hey @GM, thanks for raising this. I really appreciate you giving some thoughts regarding this topic. Personally I prefer to 'branch out' RP part while progressing further. So in our current situation, to continue talking with Nomyra about why this could have happened, and what should be our involvement while on the other hand moving things forwards.

Sometimes I just don't have any good idea to RP heavily in which case I appreciate the story progress. But I am happy with whichever approach we will take. I simply have no experience with playing AP.

Scarab Sages

I like the option to RP. But I know that if we do that more often then not we'll end up indecisive and not taking any action.
For example when we tried to pass the checkpoint/enter the building we spend a couple of days discussing options and getting more and more possibilities/ideas on what to do while in the end we could basically just walk up there and it worked ;)

That's why I started including directions for the next room to explore.
I'm not saying we should always go where I suggest we go, but I feel that if someone else agrees we at least keep moving. And if someone thinks of some reason not to move, we just don't move for a while.

We just need to find the correct balance. Everyone has days they can post more or days when they have less time so that will influence the amount of RP as well, since ideally it will be a back and forth as opposed to a monologue.

And to honest I'm contend with the amount of RP content during combat rounds - for example the epic squox fight ;)

I have no problems with the current pace. But if people want to slow down I have no problem with that either. I'm enjoying the group and the adventure so far so all's good.

I've gotta admit, my jaw dropped from shock at that attack on Nomyra. At first I thought she had taken two hits of 20+ damage and was dead, not realising the first roll was attack. I think I had to read it four times before it sunk in!

I am happy with the pacing, and have appreciated the the occasional 'move along' prod. We've also had opportunities for roleplay when we've needed, and you've rolled with some of our more bizarre schemes. I am comfortable (and appreciate) knowing that on occasions I wish to roleplay beyond banter that it will be engaged with by GM and fellow players alike.

I'm happy with the pace through the last few encounters - we are all hurting and it has made me feel a real sense of danger and risk. They know we are here and as such don't have the luxury of chatting and planning in between!

Thanks for asking :)

Nomyra wrote:
Does the first aid also stabilize Nomyra or just stop the bleeding?

As far as I know it would just stop the bleeding.

But I think the turn order is (since you can't delay when your unconscious):

At the start of her turn Nomyra takes 1d6 damage bleed damage and looses 1 Resolve
While you are dying, the first time each round you take Hit Point damage (whether from an attack or from continuous damage, such as from a bleed effect), you lose 1 Resolve Point. At any point after that in the round, if a single source (such as one attack) deals Hit Point damage greater than half your maximum Hit Points but less than your maximum Hit Points, you lose 1 additional RP
Then at the end of her turn she needs to spend 1 resolve to become stable (or die)
Then on Vedrir's turn he stops her bleeding and she's already stable (hopefully not dead) before he can act.

She's now stable, no longer bleeding and next round if we don't heal her before then can spend 1 more resolve to be back in the fight at 1 hp.
