The bomb zings past the smuggler's head and smashes against the wall behind him. Somehow, though, the smuggler dips just right that absolutely none of the explosion touches him. He doesn't even have a drop of goop on his armor.

The untouched smuggler drops the hand crossbow and rushes Ulysses with his punching dagger, screaming in fury at the mess that used to be his pet, but he's so distraught he completely whiffs.

The other smuggler, having taken a massive sword to the guts, drops to the floor in a fetal position, screaming in terror, "Oh gods! Oh gods! Don't kill me! Someone help! Help! Don't kill me!" He's a wailing, bubbling mess. (Consider him out of the combat.)

Melech's blade is barely deflected by the smuggler's armor, but Nevai's small, sad little mace just whiffs entirely. It's clear the cleric is out of practice with it and that's why he missed, not because he's a useless piece of garbage character that no one loves and also he's adopted.

Nevai gives Ulysses a firmly disapproving look, cringing at the man's outburst. He glances at the man cowering in the corner and back to the grief-stricken madman trying to murder his friend. This is about as awful a situation as he could hope to be in. He tries to remind himself he's only upholding the law; capital punishment is the best these men could hope for even if they left them alive. It doesn't help much.

Nevai gives Melech a wide berth as he moves over to the screaming man, eyeing him sideways. He's seriously starting to worry about the slayer's mental well being. He hunkers down near the smuggler, trying to make soothing noises while simultaneously disarming him.

Behind the Screen:

The smuggler stops screaming. In fact, he stops doing much of anything. He just lies on the ground like a limp fish and stares at nothing. He makes no move to stop Nevai from disarming him, nor does he react at all to being moved or jostled. He just... stares, out over the gently lapping water, with bloodshot eyes that don't so much as blink. His gently rising and falling chest is the only sign he's even still alive.

There isn't much in this area aside from a few small piles of crates, and a large door to the south.

You're no doctor, but a giant man in magical armor gave him a massive gut wound after a three-foot-tall madman detonated their animal friend and then cut his other friend into two pieces so he's probably suffering from what the kids like to call "severe shock."

He looks fairly well catatonic. You doubt he's going to recover any time soon, if ever.

Nevai opens his mouth to say something, then shuts it. "Leave him," he says, standing up. "The authorities can pick him up, if they ever have something better to do again than fight off an undead uprising. Regardless, he is of no danger anymore. We need to keep looking for Ptemenib."

He moves back to the center of the room, giving the crates a quick once-over in case there is anything useful in them.

The water is not a pool, but a canal. It heads westward into darkness, but based on your general location in the Veins, it probably connects to the Sphinx River not far ahead.

There is nothing of value in this room. There is a door to the south, however.

Ulysses opens the door with ease and swings it open. Beakers, cauldrons, and other alchemical equipment crowd several tables in this cramped room. A decomposing body sprawls across the floor, its face concealed behind a brass funerary mask.

The party takes a few steps into the room before all three detect a pungent odor in the air that gives them pause. It is acrid and sulfurous, but not immediately familiar.

Craft (alchemy) or Heal DC 15:

This is some kind of toxic vapor, likely caused by an inappropriate mixture--or rather, based on the concentration, probably several inappropriate mixtures built one on top of another until the room was toxic to stay in. Either someone deliberately sabotaged this alchemy lab, or they were spectacularly inept.

Either way, the resulting airborne toxin is not immediately lethal, but is dangerous nonetheless. It could cause brain damage and potent hallucinations resulting in temporary insanity, and the steady reduction of oxygen to the brain could lead to eventual asphyxiation and death.

Game terms: The gas requires a Fortitude Save each round you're in it or you take 1d3 Wis damage and suffer from confusion for that round. You can hold your breath, resulting in a 50% chance of not having to make a saving throw that round. Alternatively, you could try to find some way to clear the gas out, either waiting for it to dissipate or using magic or other means.

You managed to perceive the odor before you had to start making checks, but if you stay any longer you will.

Ulysses's eyes grow wide and he immediately turns and frantically waves the others back into the canal room. Once there, he explains the situation. "Let's try the doors from the large room. If they lead to the alchemy lab, perhaps we can wait for the gas to dissipate."

With that, he returns to the previous room and checks the southern doors.

Melech and Ulysses also find them locked, with the same lock type as the previous doors. Ulysses makes quick work of them (I'll assume you take 10 again) and throw open to reveal that they do, in fact, open into the same room.

I'll assume you wait them out, since nobody has any spells or items that would help here.

After 2d6 ⇒ (6, 6) = 12 minutes, the air finally seems clear enough to step inside and take a look around. There is an impatient noise from somewhere nearby--Qasin, if you had to guess--but offers no other protest.

Inside the room, the alchemy lab itself holds little of immediate value. However the corpse is of interest; he looks to have been in here at least a week, and he wears a strange brass funerary mask. On his person you find several items:

- Scroll of whispering wind
- Short sword

- Thieves' tools

Appraise DC 15:

The turquoises are worth 10gp each. The brass funerary mask is worth 25gp.

In addition, the corpse has a small note in one of its belt pouches, written in tight, elegant script.

Ulysses is 100% sure the "Sky Pharaoh" is just like, a broad term for the aliens who built the pyramids to channel chemtrails from Tian Xia to mind-control the citizenry.

Melech has never heard of any Sky Pharaoh before, but grandiose terms such as this are not uncommon among the pharaohs, and there have been a lot of them over the centuries. The only thing he's fairly certain of is that it does not refer to the current pharaoh, Khemet III, as his title has always been the Ruby Prince.

Nevai, having specifically studied the line of Osirian rulers during his cleric training with Ibrahim, is absolutely certain that no pharaoh in recorded history has ever had the title "Sky Pharaoh."

The door appears to be neither locked nor trapped, and opens without incident.

Inside is a short hallway leading into a large workspace. Several circular trapdoors can be seen on the floor to both the north and south. There is a single door in the hallway directly to your left, as well as a set of double doors that can be seen leading northward at the east end of the room. The room opens north and south.

The door appears to be both unlocked and untrapped. Melech opens the door into a small room with a table and three chairs, as well as a handful of half-empty liquor bottles on a series of low empty crates near to it, making what you can only assume is a sort of makeshift bar. A deck of cards is sprawled haphazardly on the table. To the east, a short hallway leads back out into the larger room where you just came from.
