Victor’s eyes closed as his mind and body reeled from what was being said and the kissing. He returned the kiss eagerly, for several long moments, before his mind found a brief clear moment and he gently but firmly pushed Lilly back. ”Lilly....” he started. ”Let’s do it! Let’s leave right now and catch the first ship out of Taldor and go as far west as we can!”

”We can’t...”

Lillian lets her head flop down to her chest with a heavy sigh as Victor pushes her away. Even the bastard rejects you. You are doomed to be a housewife.

She straightens her dress and turns and walks out of the closet, not waiting for Victor. ”I have to get back to work.” she says sullenly.

Victor detected her hurt, and his hand reached out behind her to stop her from leaving, but it stopped short.

It would be so easy. So perfect...for a while. But we would be haunted...this is the right thing, Victor. This is...the right thing...isn’t it?

He sighed and, after a few moments, followed her out.

At first, the servants around Lillian, Sif and Victor are a bit lost of what was going on, not knowing if Lillian was telling the truth or if it was just the alcohol talking. However, as she and Victor start a conversation, and Lillian appears to be falling apart, she finds solace in their eyes.

As Lillian and Victor enter a closet, a serving girl approaches Sif. "Is it true? Is your Lady supposed to marry the High Strategos?" She then tries to explain to Sif that despite all the bad things they have heard about his ways and temper, deep inside he perhaps is not such a tyrant... she has heard he likes to ride, hiking, and the outdoors, and perhaps the 'Lady' will find happiness and even perhaps change his ways.

As Sif turns around to look for Septis, she almost bumps him as he was coming her way. Midways, he takes an appetizer from a serving tray that consists of a toast topped with nduja, goat cheese and spearmint, which is delicious. As it happens, when he express his absolute genuine love for it, Dedrien Nos, the female head cook is utterly pleased.

When Lillian opens the closet and bolts away, Dedrien asks for Sif and Septis to way a couple minutes before returning with two small flasks. "Here, take this... your Lady might need this by the end of the night if she can't hold her tongue." Both flasks are marked as potions of delay poison.

Meanwhile, it is easy to notice that the servants around you start to pass with an increasing amount of food as they prepare several tables with various expensive cheeses, fruits, pastries, and wines. The number of trays with appetizers are also in a number impossible to follow.

The food placates the masses left confused by Stavian’s abrupt arrival and sudden disappearance, and soon conversations return to normal. Socializing becomes easier, as interested parties jockey for positions in food lines to speak with important dignitaries. Sif notices the century-old bottle of wine she tampered earlier being carried as well but when it is about to be opened, a servant notices something wrong with the cork... he opens it and smells the content before returning it to the kitchen without serving the wine.

After the light supper, the Taldan senate finally convenes to vote on various issues while guests watch from the gallery above. There is much expectation in the air and even if there are other matters to be voted on, it is clear that everyone's attention and focus is on the primogeniture vote to take place further into the night. After the hall spends almost a full hour arguing and voting on formalities and spending bills, it appears they are ready for the event all of Taldor has been waiting for: whether to abolish the long-standing law of primogeniture.

The political ruling body of Taldor spreads out twenty feet below the observation deck of the gallery. Dozens of senators and their immediate aides scurry below. The cacophony of voices is almost deafening, and it seems like the ceaseless chatter will continue endlessly. Suddenly, the magically amplified voice of the senate speaker interrupts the noise. "Thank you all. I would ask that our observers please be silent and seat themselves. We will now begin voting on addendum number twenty-two thousand eighty-seven: the repeal of the ancient law of primogeniture, the issuance of inheritance and aristocratic title solely through male heirs."

Following this proclamation, the speaker begins calling on individual senators one at a time to support or oppose the repeal. Early declarations split evenly between the options, with many senators abstaining entirely, and only halfway through the process do votes begin to favor Princess Eutropia’s bid to end primogeniture. By the end of the tabulations, the repeal passes with roughly 60 percent of the senate’s backing. The speaker takes a moment to compose himself, seemingly shocked by the results, before continuing to formally announce the initial results in a distant monotone. "And so, the final tally for addendum twenty-two thousand eighty-seven, the repeal of primogeniture, with thirty-six abstentions, the final tally stands at one hundred and seven for, seventy-nine against. The addendum passes. Among other business tonight, the senate recognizes Princess Eutropia Stavian, first of her name, as the new heir to the Primogen Crown, the first heir the empire has seen in twenty years, and the first female heir."

With the declaration made, the chamber explodes in a riot of applause and condemnation. It takes several minutes for the cacophony to die down. The speaker declares that a closed senate recount is to take place, an event signaled by the speaker declaring a temporary recess of the senate to outsiders. Following the vote, Martella Lotheed summons all of you through the magical badge for another recap, just as ushers begin announcing Grand Prince Stavian’s speech and exaltation to begin in half an hour. Following her instruction, the meeting takes place in the same section of the gallery where you last met Martella.

As you reach for her table, you notice that Lady Martella makes no effort to hide her relief and happiness for the voting results. She invites you to sit, holding a glass of wine and actually drinking from it, as if now she is allowed to enjoy the evening and relax a bit. "Congratulations, my friends... if appears our objective has been reached!"

Victor watched the proceedings silently. At the announcement of the vote, he let out a silent sigh and relaxed a bit.

Maybe this will help Lilly be free of her mother's yoke. Maybe now she won't marry the High Strategos...

When they recess and return to Lady Martella, he smiles politely and replies "So it would seem. Let us pray it is the right thing for the nation..."

Septis watched the proceedings with interest and was slightly surprised himself when the vote passed. Either way, he was glad that he picked the winning side figuring that between his recent introductions and the Princess essentially being the next ruler that put him in a pretty good spot.

As they meet back up with Martella he grabs a glass of wine from a nearby waitor and sits to enjoy it "Indeed, I think tonight has been a smashing success." He looks to Martella with a grin and then asks "So what is next?"

She purposely avoids her mother during the dining and at Victors constant pressure, she stuffs breads and waters into her mouth as he suggest he slows her drinking down.

Lillian is not surprised the ancient law is struck down, she had been blindly confident that this was going to happen. She throws her hands into the air when the addendum passes, exclaiming happily "For Taldor! For Eutropia!"

When the secret meeting request occurs, she once more avoids her mother and makes her way back to the area to rejoin the others. While she is happy, she is still dreading what is to come later this evening. Maybe the High Strategos will be forced to seek his wife elsewhere now?

She congratulates her companions "Well done, all. Well done."

When Victor insinuates this is not the correct path, she reaches over and smacks his chest with the back of her hand. "Stop it. You're just afraid of a woman being in charge!"

Victor arches an eyebrow at Lilly’s rebuke. ”On the contrary. I’m concerned that some old prudes with power may not like the idea of change...and then do something stupid that gets a lot of people hurt or killed.”

He then steps over to either a nearby window or railing and leans on it, looking out offer the city

"What is next?" Martella smiles at the question. "Now we wait and hope for the best. The Grand Prince will make his speech soon enough and I believe it will be a concession to Princess Eutropia's bid for the trone."

It is possible to notice that, despite enthusiastic and relieved by the recent vote, she is still worried that something could go wrong. "While the vote doesn't replace the Grand Prince, he has made no secret of his opposition to the repeal, and I expect our aging emperor to show no amount of restraint in lambasting his daughter. Nevertheless, I can't imagine anything he could do to stop it."

She then retrieves a letter and handles it to Victor. "Here, take this, please, before you go find your seats for our Emperor's speech." The piece of paper is neatly folded and sealed with wax embossed with a simple heart. "This letter has nothing to do with our endeavor tonight and instead a simple message for Kalbio of Breezy Creek, the peasant about to be exalted, from his parents who couldn't afford to travel into Oppara for the ceremony." She explains. "I was told the letter is of a personal and emotional nature, and so Kalbio's parents asked that it not be delivered until after the big day. Could you do it for me?"

Victor does his best to hide his frustration at once again being tasked as a simple messenger, especially given that their “mission” was concluded. Despite being somewhat used to such demeaning tasks being relegated to him by his family, having an almost complete stranger do so clearly irked him.

Nevertheless, he bowed and simply said ”Yes, My Lady,” before taking the message and turning abruptly to depart, holding his cloak with his free hand to keep it from swatting the table with the speed in which he excused himself from the frustrating taskmaster he had found himself with.

When Martella retrieves the letter from Victor who is obviously frustrated Septis volunteers "I spoke with the man earlier, I would be happy to deliver it to him after his exaltation."

He gives Martella a smile and extends his hand to take the letter. He figures it doesn't hurt to further aid the woman and maybe delivering some heart felt letter to the new noble would earn him even more favor that he could use to his advantage in the future.

Once he has the letter he will head out with the others and find a good spot for the speech, bringing along the sulking Lil who was continuing to remain quiet.

Map!

With a smile, Lady Martella handles the letter to Septis with a "Thank you, Mr. Hadrias."

You head out for the senate floor, leaving Lady Martella behind since she seems to have some other business to attend before the Emperor's speech. As you reach the end of the stairs, hundreds of dignitaries, senators, and visitors cram onto the senate floor, looking for a seat for themselves.

A dozen hulking members of the Ulfen Guard, personal bodyguards of the grand prince, stand arrayed around a podium atop the central, circular stage of the chamber. A mix of senatorial staffers and Ulfen Guard assign people to positions within the chamber based on rank and influence, placing you toward the outer wall of the room, well over 80 feet away from the grand prince’s podium. Martella Lotheed can be seen 20 feet closer, while Princess Eutropia and several prominent nobles stand at the podium’s edge.

It takes more than a couple minutes for all to be seated and even so, the emperor appears to be in no rush to make his speech, which is delayed for, at least, half an hour. Many are bored and impatient and a few even try to get up and continue to talk with each other, which is somewhat controlled by the Ulfen Guard.

Finally, after what is seems to be an eternity, Grand Prince Stavian III ascends to the tall stage that overlooks the hall from its center. He raises a single hand to calm the murmurs of the assembled crowd. A member of the prince’s Ulfen Guard escorts a thrilled-looking man in noble attire—the soon-to-be elevated commoner, Kalbio—to stand several paces behind the prince. "Quite the assembly we have here today," the grand prince says. "I don't think I've ever seen the senate building packed so full... especially not for any of my previous speeches. Even my lovely daughter, now a woman, sits among the players of Oppara's greatest game. Of course, none of you are here for me. No... today is about something else entirely. Today is about elevation. It is no secret that today is about exalting others to a new status in life."

"I'm sure many of you have had the opportunity to meet Kalbio here. He is a man of the people, elevated at the urging of all the ladies, lords, senators, and aides present in this chamber. I think we should all give him a rousing applause, to commemorate this momentous change in his life." The room erupts into cheers as Stavian pauses in his proclamation. The grand prince of Taldor smiles widely as he takes in the adulation of the crowd.

Sense Motive Rolls:

Lillian: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Liloria: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Septis: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (7) + 0 = 7
Sif: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Victor: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

During the cheers, Sif notices several attendees begin to look around, growing tense but unsure of what is happening. After the cheers diminish in enthusiasm, Grand Prince Stavian III asks for silence, intending to continue with his speech.

As the applause abates, a hulking Ulfen Guard (which Sif recognizes as Rokbar, a still strong middle aged warrior who more than once tried to force her to sleep with him) pushes Kalbio forward, almost knocking the commoner down as he awkwardly regains his balance beside Grand Prince Stavian. The leader of Taldor maintains his calm, placing a hand on Kalbio's shoulder without ever taking his eyes off the crowd. "I understand your parents sacrificed everything to help you reach this day, my boy. Saving up for your apprenticeship and the tools you needed to achieve greatness. And today you are a grateful son, no doubt making them proud. I too understand what it is to sacrifice... I have given so much for the people of this nation: a brother, a son, a lifetime of service..." He eyes the crowd, looking a bit distraught "...even my own daughter's loyalty.' He pauses, licking his lips and pulling the awkward Kalbio closer to his side. "But unlike you, Lord Kalbio, these Taldans, my children, truly, are not grateful... They scheme... They plot! Dreaming of hanging their dutiful father and placing a woman... A woman, sir! On the Lion Throne! And... and they have seen fit this very day to induct you into their conspiratorial ranks. And that is why here, now, you, Lord Kalbio, will be the first among them to DIE!" And with that, the Emperor of Taldor plunges a jeweled dagger between the ribs of the astonished man in his clutches.

While Stavian’s accusations stun the crowd open mouthed, Kalbio's blood showers the front row of the senate floor, even splashing on Princess Eutropia's face. Kalbio mouths "Ma...ma...pa..." before he collapses to the stage in a heap. A red-stained Princess Eutropia defiantly stands among the nobility, starring up at her father in disbelief.

Meanwhile, hidden and unidentified soldiers cast aside cloaks to reveal armor and blades and begin to move to cut down the attending masses in a wholesale slaughter. It appears that no less than half a hundred assassins surround the room. After a moment's confusion from most of the Ulfen Guard, the viking warriors attempt to close ranks around their emperor, cutting down anyone, black-clad warrior and panicked senator alike, who approaches. Masked soldiers guard the doors and make wide-arc slashes with their swords to keep the crowds at bay. Within mere seconds, the senate floor becomes a killing field, as Stavian III looks around in deranged wonder at the butchery he has ordered. He laughs crazily. "KILL THEM ALL! KILL ALL THE TRAITORS OF OUR GREAT EMPIRE!"

As the conflict escalates, other members of the crowd pull hidden weapons from their clothing and engage the Stavian agents. One of them is recognizable as Kathann Zalar, the helpful guard who inspected you upon entry to the gala, as she leaps into combat, shouting, "Lion Blades! To your duties! Defend the senate! Defend Taldor!" Even Martella Lotheed and Princess Eutropia draw their weapons to fight back against the assassins.

Lillian had been waiting for Lord Kalbio's moment all evening. She had finally sobered up enough to stop the slurring of her speech and eagerly awaiting the Grand Prince's upcoming words. At her mothers insistence, she left her companions and joined her for the speech.
It was explained to her that when the Exaltation concluded she would be introduced to High Strategos.

Lillian cheers with the crowd, relishing in the fact that this man's life is about to change for the better, forever. Those thoughts are quickly erased when Lord Kalbio's throat is cut open. She screams loudly "NO!" as all hell begins to break lose. She gets shoved aside and then pushed to the the floor as everyone begins to scramble around. She pulls out her daggers while crouched on the ground, knowing she will likely to defend her mother who was without a weapon.

Leaping to her feet, she looks around for her mother and calls out loudly "MOTHER!" MOTHER!"

Septis is shocked by the turn of events why would the emperor turn something like this... it didn't make sense. It's not like the princess was trying to usurp him... just continue the line of succession.

In any case he looks around trying to find a way to escape but there are guards that block the door he turns to Lil with a worried look and she slightly rolls her eyes before moving in close to her master.

Septis readies himself to cast a spell if any of the men get too close hoping to grease an area if one gets too close and avoid getting cut down.

Map!

It is a complete chaos.

Men, women, children and the elderly all scream and cry as the assassins surround and kill them as if intended to purge them from Taldor without distinction. Rival senators from just a couple minutes ago now fight alongside each other, fighting for survival as the matter of the primogeniture appears now a simple frivolity.

Sif looks around but can't find her mother anywhere... she also doesn't recall having seen her the whole night so perhaps she is out in some other duty. She does notice, however, that now the Ulfen Guard was divided in two groups! While initially all of them were focused on protecting the Grand Prince, now some try to protect the common people from the assassins wearing black while others have sided with them... as a result now the Ulfen Guard fights itself.

Victor looks around and sees Lillian far from him, close to her mother. As he rushes towards her, he notices one of the assassins closing towards Senator Duo who, unarmed, tries to protect his twin daughters while his wife lies at his feet in a pool of blood. Victor dashes to help the poor man, reaching for his falcata... just to find it peacebounded. Sadly, as he fumbles with the intricated laces, the assassin notices him and slashes against his chest! However, as the deadly blade is about to hit his flesh, he feels some warmth emanating from his badge and in an instant he finds himself in complete darkness, even if in a soft surface.

While Septis looks for an exit, he watches as Victor is apparently hit by the assassin's blade but instead of falling dead, he simply disappears in thin air!

Lillian, besides her mother, draws her dagger as one of the assassins comes for them. As he gets closer, however, she is shoved aside by her mother, who evades the assassins attack, grabs his wrist with her left hand while she punches him with her right fist. In a fluid motion, Grand Duchess Darahan disarms the assassin and buries his own blade in his guts, showing Lillian that her mother continues to be the same fierce warrior she so much heard about. The chaos, however, reaches them once more and Lillian is pushed by a panicked senator and while she falls over a chair, everything goes dark.

Meanwhile, Sif manages to reach Zalar, now fighting the hulking Rokbar who wields his greataxe against her. The lioness, with a pair of curved daggers, focuses more on dodging his ample swings for now. Trying to help, she tries to surround the big skald when she is surrounded by a fire before being surrounded by darkness... however, instead of feeling her flesh burn, she finds herself wet? The smell of stagnant water fills her nose as she looks around and finds herself inside a bathtub! Looking around, she notices she is inside a bathroom, even if she sees so in black and white.

From a vantage position, Septis who has been able to keep his distance from the assassins, sees Sif flanking a big Ulfen Guard when a big ball of fire surges from nowhere and sends everything to hell! Zalar, Rokbar and Sif all disappear, engulfed by the flame, as are many other senators who now scream in pain. His astonishment is broken by Liloria's scream of fear and caution and as he turns around a dagger flies in slow motion towards his face... and soon he also finds himself in darkness.

Victor gropes around and is convinced he is now on a bed. After a couple seconds, he hears something falling on the floor and some cursing, recognizing Lillian's voice. After a couple more seconds, both of them hear some splashing sound that appears to come from another room. In sequence, two more things fall on the floor, one closer to Lillian and the other followed by the sound of wood and more things falling on the floor, books?, and some more cursing, now with Liloria's voice!

You all find yourselves in a dark and musty room. Take a look at the map! Liloria and Sif can see everything since they have darkvision.

Sif:
You find yourself indeed in a bathroom. There is a door to the west.

Liloria and when there is some light!:
Faded wallpaper lines the walls of this thirty-five-foot-by-thirty-five-foot room, peeling up at the seams. Six beds line the western wall, each pristinely made but caked in a thick layer of dust. Eight closed wooden lockers line the northeastern corner of the room. Two doors exit the room: one to the north and one to the east.

But then when she heads for the first door she sees and starts to seemingly walk right in, he darts in front of her and takes the lead. ”Septis, please keep the light moving up this way. Thanks...” he says as he leads the way into the next room. ”Sif, join up with us over here. We should stick together given the circumstances...”

Septis nods and holds the coin up like a torch following behind the others with Lil watching his back. He notes "Yes, better to stick together. Let's try and figure out where we are and, more importantly, how to get out of here."

Victor opens the door at the end of the north corridor. A wooden counter juts from the northwest corner of this thirty-foot-by-thirty-foot chamber. Open cabinets of dusty liquor bottles stand behind the bar, while one cabinet remains tightly sealed with a visible lock. Three tables with adjacent chairs fill much of the room. Portraits of posing nobles and historical scenes adorn the walls, all faded with age. A pair of doors exit to the east.

Knowledge (history) DC 14:
Each of the portraits on the wall represents a notable figure or scene chronicled by Taldor’s Fourth Army of Exploration, which surveyed and staked a claim to the lands that would eventually be Andoran in 1683 AR, and made a brief attempt into the Five Kings Mountains.

On a wall, you notice a strange panel of brass and green glass, which was also present on the previous room now that you think about it.

Lillian nods "Alright. Stick together. Let's get back to the gala as quick as we can, they need our help out there. Maybe we're in a storage room or something."

Looking back at her group, she says "Septis, hold the light closer so I can make sure we're not trapped in here."

"I don't think we're in the provinces anymore, Toto," Sif says to Lillian. "These portraits are all dudes from Taldor's Fourth Army of Exploration. I think we're in Andoran?"

Septis shrugs "Maybe, but paintings like that could just as easily be kept in a museum or something in Taldor..." Septis moves over toward Lillian so she can see what she is doing with to other door in the room.

While the others are talking about painting Lil moves around the room looking for anything that might be of use or maybe even of value. Maybe there is some booze that is still good in the cabinets she wonders.

"Andoran!? What?! No, we can't be in Andoran!" Lillian protests. Lillian pushes ahead and continues to rip open doors, looking for a way out.

Map!

While looking through the cabinets, Lil discovers that most of the liquors here have soured or evaporated away over the eons, but two bottles of whiskey remain sealed with wax (worth 75gp each). She also finds a wand (wand of create food and water [14 charges], DC 20 Spellcraft) and a single remarkably elaborated spoon (sustaining spoon, DC 20 Spellcraft) amid the common silverware. One of the cabinets is locked with a strong lock.

Lillian finds nothing on the doors and open them safely, finding yet another corridor that ends in another pair of doors. Once more she examines them and opens them, revealing another room. Heavy wooden bookshelves line the walls of this opulent bedchamber. A posh chair sits in the northwestern corner alongside a small circular table. A massive bed and an adjoining table rest along the eastern side of the room. An open bathroom fits into the southwest, with a bathtub matching the room’s opulence, but adding an ignoble odor. A single door exit to the south.

Once more a strange panel of brass and green glass lies on a wall. Once Septis also enters the room, bringing with him the his shining coin, you notice an ornate gold key (worth 100gp) on top of the circular table next to the sofa chair.

"Don't look like no museum to me," Sif mutters under her breath. "What are these panels?"

She goes over to one of the brass and green glass panels and casts detect magic giving it a look over.

Upon concentrating, Sif detects only a faint aura coming from the strange panel.

Since you have no ranks in K. Arcane and Spellcraft, this is all you can get!

Sif frowns after looking at the panel. "It's definitely magical, but I can't tell what it does. Since there is one in every room, and this looks like a fancy schmancy manor, maybe they are some kind of messaging system? Like a rope and bell to call the servants?"

Can you describe the panel a bit more? Are there buttons, levers, depressions, holes, anything? Or just a flat green glass panel like a screen?

Map!

Oh, sorry for missing the Bardic Knowledge!

The panel is simply a small square 2-inches-by-2-inches piece of green glass inside a brass frame. There are no writings or schematics on them and also no buttons, levers and the like.

No worries

Sif shrugs and puts her palm flat against the glass panel, seeing if anything will happen.

Map!

As Sif touches the glass panel, nothing happens in the room she is, but she notices light coming from the corridor.

Suddenly, on the room where Lillian, Septis and Victor are in, a single globe with light appears in the center of the ceiling, shedding light in the whole room! It is also possible to see that a smaller globe has also appeared inside the bathroom.

Lillian shouts "Light!" when the globe lights in the ceiling. "Sif! Whatever you just did turned on a globe of light in here. Also looks like light is coming from the bathroom too. Good job!"

"The little glass panels turn the lights on, I guess," Sif replies, going to join the group.
