Surkha looks across the way at Laurel, his face a bit incredulous (even if he might not quite know what 'incredulous' meant (insert your favorite 'are you kidding me' gif here)).

"Nyet, boy. Not that we have to bring him down, we get to do it."

Yay! Sorry for not posting, life was crazy but glad Galen and Findlaine got their stuff in.

Findlaine advances carefully while Galen fires a fire ray that goes wide over his prone target. Hallod growls and gets to his feet, slapping another bolt into the crossbow and winching it up.

Laurel, now aware of trip wires, and hearing Marin's voice in his head - "Heed not the caravan but in tracking each wagon with care wild flower" - decides to proceed with caution.

Spoiler:

Seek 30-foot cone pointed @ Hallod

plus:

A) If Laurel sees more tripwires:

Point Out (so his allies may bypass more effectively)
◆Step or Stride (using Acrobatics @ +7 if that's how that works) (next to Hallod to set up a flank for Z)

B) Or, if possible to do so without triggering them, or if he detects none, simply:

◆Stride (next to Hallod to set up a flank for Z)

Nosh makes some familiar movements with his arms as he prepares an Acid splash, but it takes a little longer than normal for the glob of acid to shoot from Nosh's finger. It seems a little faster and brighter to those watching and goes farther

I'm not 100% sure how to allocate Zurkha's actions. Described in writing, it's like this. If Laurel didn't call any additional tripwires, Seek them out myself. Either way, move into position, avoiding anything I see or that has been pointed out. I'm skeptical tht leaves any time to Strike this turn.

GM, LMK any die rolls you need me to make in support of the above, or go ahead and make them in my name if it keeps the ball moving.

Nice tactical triangle Findlaine!

.

@Nosh your acid splash also does crit damage as well as persistent.

GM rolls:

Nosh Crit: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Laurel takes a cautious second to look for a tripwire, and seeing none, charges forward. Unfortunately, he feels something push against his chest and there's a loud 'CLACK' as an enormous spear launcher goes off.

The spear goes right through Laurel, and the young man flies backwards, landing in a bloody heap and bleeding out.

Nosh quickly responds by flinging a glob of acid right into Hallod's face, eliciting a scream from the man as he was laughing at Laurel's fate.

Laurel is CRITTED for 24 damage and is at dying 2! You guys have uncovered all the trip wires the good way and the hard way. Zurkha feel free to take your action now that you know the tripwire layout, and that Laurel is down and out.

The stinging in Laurel's chest is quickly replaced by a strange calm, as he slowly realizes he has left the cave, to look up and see a woman with gossamer wings backlit against a starlit sky watching over several youngsters gathered around a campfire. The woman has Marin's face. Jesselle runs over to Laurel, and asks him to join her in a hopping dance, while Morosino plucks a tune on a strange wooden instrument. Two other children are wrestling in the corner, until Jesselle and Laurel's dance crashes into them, at which point they join hands in a ring, laughing, and Morosino lets out a hearty guffaw after strumming a pitchy note. The constellations of the night sky take the form of an armored Elf and a robed Human arguing and pointing fingers next to a skittish Goblin leaning in to try and understand a brow-furled Orc, and Laurel is momentarily pulled away from the merriment of his ringing dance.

The winged woman flys over to Laurel, and asks him "Perhaps your life's wanderings bring you unto the brink of a next threshold, that you may rejoice in reunion with these here, or perhaps you yet cling to a coil not yet unwound. Speak true child, and know your heart's desire, and fear not, for your star yet hangs in the firmament!"

And to hearing her words, Laurel puzzles to think, deciding his next few words carefully...

Galen's eyes go wide as Laurel hits the ground, and he throws out a hand, chanting out a prayer to his goddess. The gaping hole in Laurel abruptly starts closing with his divine energy, and Laurel's eyes snap open as he sucks in a breath. There is still pain, horrible pain, but Laurel is alive.

Galen then raises his shield. Up near Hallod, Zurkha completely loses his shit and charges for the man, flames licking along his sword as his anger materializes. Hallod tries to avoid the blow but Zurkha connects with a brutal swing, opening up a wound on the big rough man. Hallod throws his crossbow aside and draws his kukri before sidestepping a wild swipe of Zurkha's and slamming his dagger into the half-orc's chest. He then throws a left hook that knocks Zurkha clean out. The half-orc hits the ground, another victim of Hallod's

Laurel scampers up the tree roots and flips off of the tree to land behind Hallod and slash at his leg. He remains fixated on Galen whose blows he parries, and he ducks an acid splash from Nosh!

Hallod at this point is covered in blood and is obviously in pain from the burning acid.

.

Oh yeah, forgot something. DING! welcome to level two!

You take a bit to patch up and loot the joint.

Hallod has a heavy crossbow, a very nice kukri, leather armor, a lesser healing potion, and one of the vials he was drinking.

Within the crates you find a fortune in alchemical reagents, two everburning torches, and a flat grey stone with a rune carved onto it.

Testing with detect magic, you can determine the kukri and the stone are both magical.

As well, you find the following note in Hallod's pocket.

Mysterious Note in clumsy, severe handwriting wrote:

Hallod,

The final shipment of corpse blood is due in just over a week and it is the last thing I need from that greedy bastard, Bort. I've enclosed a parting gift for him that should ensure he never tells anyone of our dealings. Be sure that he gets it, my darling.

Drop off the reagents as soon as they arrive. My work is almost done. You will find your usual reward in the stump.

The boy would like to casually shop around for throwing knives as well. Perhaps a few more torches too. He has been practicing whirling his blades quickly for some time now, and realizes that his practice is paying off.

As for Downtime, probably strutting around town for an entire week, eager to bask in the glory of his local heroism! (I'm calling this Retraining a Skill - losing training in Deception in exchange for training in Diplomacy).

And checking back in with Marin time and again.

After checking in with the sheriff, Galen ponders what to do next. there is certainly more to the story here, and things aren't all adding up. clearly the man they fought wasn't a mastermind that planned an attack on Bort. he was just a pawn. so to really get to the bottom of what happened to their ally would mean finding the person who paid Hallod to do the deed.

Galen decides to check in with the other members of the caravan and see what their plans are. as much as he wants to find out who was behind the poison he also doesn't want to be left behind in the middle of nowhere to eat turnips for the rest of his days...

.

You all enjoy some very well-earned days of rest to just recover from the ordeal you've all been through in hunting down Hallod. The mystery of who Hallod was working for remains unsolved.

After a few days, four of you are at the breakfast table "enjoying" a turnip fritata. Findlaine had been speaking with an older drunk, Lawren Krent, and has gone off on her own to investigate something to do with him. You hear a sharp whistle from outside and Delma glances up. "Oh Noala is back - she... I think she wants to speak with you lot."

You all head out to spot an woman in a heavy brown cloaked trimmed with leaves. She marches up to you, pulling a simple wooden sledge behind her. As she approaches, she brings the sledge to one side and uncovers her cargo, a pile of wolf carcasses. She turns to you, and despite having her cloaks hood pulled low, you can make out weathered lips and a slender chin.

In a pointed tone she asks, "Is this your work?"

Laurel dashes outside, nearly spilling his frittata on the floor.

And demonstrates to this new figure his recently-mastered trick: Quickdrawing his (Hallod's) new (former) Kukri - several times, in and out of it's sheath, in repetition, showboating his prowess. "Yeh whose askin'?" he levies "We ben dep-Yuh-tized roun' here by the Shairf hisself, ready tah defend!" and with a quick twirl, holsters one last time with emphasis.

"Ma name's Laurel, an' this'ere is Galen, an' thes Nosh an' Zurkha over there - an' Findlaine'll be back soon enough. An' me Ma, she's inside." he explains. Then politely: "Sa pleasure tah make yer acquaitence!" And bows to display proportionate respect.

Diplomacy (trained): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Seems Laurel rolls better untrained!? Go figure...
