Theria is a fantasy campaign of my own creation. It has all the trappings of traditional fantasy, but it uses the Mutants & Masterminds 3rd edition ruleset.

Grith eyed the supposed "alchemist" with a great deal of disbelief. "I'll see him dead before this is over, I imagine." He shrugged and responded to Toots, "I can deal with monsters, but not sure how to kill one without leaving a mark. What do you want me to do, scare it to death?" The broad, shirtless dwarf hooked his thumbs into his belt and looked an odd sight, at once casually comfortable and also glowing with ember runes.
He turned to the big fellow that had brought him here. "Maybe he could strangle one..."

Looking more entertained than anything else, Alcelia just walked beside Devon, helping guide him towards the museum. How was this going to turn out, hmm? Even she didn't have every answer, but it seemed worth following up on.

Devon looks a little green and holds up his cup but doesn't drink. "We're hunting...Ankhegs?" But then the 100 gold registers and his eyes go wide. With that sort of coin he could buy almost anything...considering he has never thought about purchasing anything more then the simple necessities before now. "I guess...I'm ready to go."

Male Human Mage Initiative +3; Dodge +4, Fortitude +5, Parry +4, Toughness +5, Will +7 (-0 Penalty on Toughness)

Kal raises an eyebrow, "A hundred? Between five of us, so twenty each per? Not bad. That said, professor, might you be amenable to me perusing your library afterwards? I'm always keen on seeing what interesting bits of lore can be found in private collections." he asks, then joins the toast.

Dwarf 6 | D&P: 4, T: 8/8 | F: 8, W: 4 | Init: +4 | Senses: perception +5 <darkvision>

Something seemed... off about this young human. Grith chose not to mention it.
Spotting the two from the road, he scoffed and waited for them all to gather themselves. There wasn't much to Grith besides what was already on or in him, so it didn't take him long to get ready to go anywhere.
"One of you know how to kill an Ankheg gently?"

Male Human Mage Initiative +3; Dodge +4, Fortitude +5, Parry +4, Toughness +5, Will +7 (-0 Penalty on Toughness)

I figure now would be a good time to mention, with everyone in one place, for those who can pick up on such things: Kal is practically glowing with magic. While it isn't exactly uncommon for transmuters to enhance themselves with magic, he takes it to the next level, and he's apparently constantly maintaining either a really big transmutation effect or a ton of really minor ones on his appearance.

"Um...with poison? Maybe or an arrow through the eye into the brain? I've never fought an ankheg before." Devon admits nervously glancing between the much more intense looking people around him.

Alcelia isn't exactly subtle either. I have a living spirit of flame channeled into my body and only survive by way protective runes that are constantly glowing hot all over my body, and yet I'm the most subdued spellcaster here.

"Poison, that's a clever idea." He nods to the young elvish fellow, then casts a sidelong glance at the "alchemist". Probably too much to hope.
Grabbing a glass of wine he declares "To the hunt! And a good trophy." In proper dwarf fashion he downs most of the glass in a single go, the rest spilling over into his beard.

Male Human Mage Initiative +3; Dodge +4, Fortitude +5, Parry +4, Toughness +5, Will +7 (-0 Penalty on Toughness)

Subtlety is the strong suit of superheroes nor adventurers. Adventuring superheroes? That's just asking for trouble. At least Kal's is only visible to those who see magic.

Kal nods thoughtfully, "Suffocation might also work. But, then again, they do live most of their time underground. Do they breathe? Hm. Something to try." he glances at the glowing dwarf, and a ghost of a grin touches his face, He'll see soon enough. he thinks to himself.

"Here's another question - how do you think you'd be good at killing such creatures?" Alcelia inquired. "A man cannot build a sturdy house solely by knowing how to cut stone, nor a warrior fight with a spear just because he can shoot a bow."

"I...can shoot a bow and use a sword. But I greatly prefer the bow." Devon piped in quietly.

Dwarf 6 | D&P: 4, T: 8/8 | F: 8, W: 4 | Init: +4 | Senses: perception +5 <darkvision>

Grith leers at the sorceress. "Isn't she fun..."

"I like to think an arrow hole would be forgivable. But don't expect me to keep you alive in there. The strong survive, understand?" The words sound harsh and critical, but his face is without expression. To Grith he's simply stating truth.

Loving the RP but I'm ready to hit the road. All in favor?

If we are all ready, then..." Toots picks up her sword and longbow, strapping the former to her hip and the latter on her back, where also sits a quiver of arrows.

Male Human Mage Initiative +3; Dodge +4, Fortitude +5, Parry +4, Toughness +5, Will +7 (-0 Penalty on Toughness)

Kal nods, and touches the brooch on his cloak, which causes the fabric to shimmer momentarily before returning to normal, "Let's get this out of the way." he says.

One way or another, this was likely to be interesting. "Works for me." she said with a smile. The sooner they found these hunting targets, the better.

Toots leads you south from the city, into the outlying fields and beyond, following the river. You travel about six miles outside the city limits to the edge of the Black Forest (so named for The Black Tower that lies at its heart). As you near the forest's edge, Toots calls you to a halt.

"The lair is nearby, just inside the forest. Before we get too close, I need to warn you to be wary of your feet. Ankhegs like to attack from below. They can hear you walking above them, so step carefully. Okay, let's...

She is interrupted by a sudden explosion of dirt, mud, and grass. From the gaping hole that appears very nearly beneath her, a huge dark grey shape with a dorsal fin emerges.

"Land-shark!" Toots shouts. "Watch out for its teeth!"

The bulette snaps at Toots, but she manages to roll clear of its jaws at the last second. She retaliates with a spear thrust, but the creature shrugs off the attack!

Devon leaps back with a shout his bow materializing in his hand with fear and yet elven grace. He overpulls on his bow in panic and unleashes an arrow aimed at the monsters eye!

Power attack -5/+5, All Out attack -5/+5, Damage DC 23, -5 to Active Defense for the turn
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Edit: Ooooh a crit threat! I'd like to apply increased effect for +5 to the DC for a total of 28 DC toughness assuming it surpasses its defense.

Kal quickly takes to the air, leaving the ground (and hopefully danger) behind, as his eyes and tattoos begin to glow with an electric blue light. Below him, a matching light envelops the bulette, and it's skin begins to take on a color similar to that of sandstone.

Using Harmful Transmutation (Affliction 6- Dazed, Stunned, Transformed). If it's transformed, it becomes a sandstone statue.

Grith draws his hammers and watches for an attack, holding back for now.
Defend: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

Alcelia gestures slightly and what appeared to be a pale, transparent wheel with spokes of light in groups of three spun into existence in the air before her and began to float around, following her hand movements.

Activating Third Wheel of Weyan for Deflect 6; this has a Reflect attribute and she will actively try to intercept further attacks at the group.

Devon's arrow speeds towards the target, striking the beast in the eye! The bulette roars in pain but does not cease its rampage. (bruised; -1 to further Toughness checks) Kal attempts to transform the beast into sand, but it resists the change. (dazed) Alcelia summons a mystic shield. Toots stabs at the bulette with her spear. The creature snarls as the weapon sinks into yielding flesh, but it does not slow down in its attacks. (bruised; -2 to further Toughness checks)

Giving Grith a chance to act before it makes its attack.

Male Human Mage Initiative +3; Dodge +4, Fortitude +5, Parry +4, Toughness +5, Will +7 (-0 Penalty on Toughness)

Kal keeps up his assault, the stone creeping through the veins of the land-shark continuing to spread like a virus.

Keeping it my Harmful Transmutation via cumulative. As before, it becomes a statue if it ends up transformed.

Devon notched a second arrow and fired again at the creature in a blur of motion aimming for when it opened it mouth and down its throat into vulnerable innards.

Bow attack w/ Power attack and All Out Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
DC 23 Toughness

Roll20 Maps: Borderlands 1 || Borderlands 2 || Carrion Crown || Forge of Heroes || Skull & Shackles || Mad Mage of Undermountain ||Weird War I

The bulette's jaws snap again, this time Toots only barely manages to roll away in time. Kal keeps up his assault on the landshark, but the creature continues to resist the effects (staggered). Devon sends an arrow down its throat and it chokes slightly, but there is no other apparent effect (bruised; -3 to further Toughness checks).

Seeing the beast and the party locked in combat, Grith leaps in with his hammers and swings a heavy blow even while keeping the thing at arm's length.
Hammer + guard weapon -2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 DC 21 toughness
Defense + guard weapon: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11 +8 for 19
But there's too much going on around the single foe, and Grith's swings are wild and careless.

The light show by Alcelia's fingertips continued to glimmer as she kept a watchful eye over the area, alert for other troubles that might come in. Few things were deadlier than a foe who plunged into your back when you were too focused on someone else, so someone needed to pay attention to the rest of the area.

Continuing Third Wheel of Weyan to protect other party members.

Male Human Mage Initiative +3; Dodge +4, Fortitude +5, Parry +4, Toughness +5, Will +7 (-0 Penalty on Toughness)

Kal breathes deeply, and redoubles his efforts, trying to crystallize the land-shark from the inside.

Harmful Transmutation as before, DC 16 fortitude save or be completely turned to stone.

Devon launches another arrow, but the massive beast somehow manages to twist such that the missile strikes a thick patch of scales. It snarls in anger and snaps at Grith (Crit!: DC 26 Parry or DC 24 Damage plus DC 15 Reflex save or drop prone!)!

The party is up!

Bulette vs. Grith: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Bulette Resistance: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

As the fight continued Devon saw his little arrows were having minimal effect on this monstrous beast who seemed like it would take over a dozen such arrows to fell it. He reached into his quiver and felt a different arrow he had been saving, a black arrow tipped with a wicked pointed spiral that seemed to faintly hum with artifice. He pulled back and held this shot for a key moment before letting it fly toward the beast's open mouth aiming ti shred its internal guts like a blender when the magic drilled it from the inside outward.

Grith takes the bite and snarls back, shaking the creature to get it off of his thick leather boot. However, it shakes him worse and he flips over onto his back with a heavy thud.
Grith grunts with the impact but quickly stands back up and re-engages with his hammers.

Kal's eyes narrow, and instead of maintaining his initial spell, tries to attack the bulette with a powerful blast of somewhat-uncontrolled lightning.

Damage Rank 8: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Letting go of her defensive wheel, Alcelia spun around once and clenched a fist. As she did so, what looked like thick chains erupted out of the ground and began to wrap around the Bulette.

Devon's arrow slams home, the bulette chocking on the object, leaving it dazed and wounded (-4 on further Toughness saves). It turns to catch Grith's blows on its armored midsection and manages to avoid Kal's lightning bolt. Alcelia tries to chain it down, but it twists to avoid the spell! Toots slams home her spear, but the landshark ignores the wound and keeps fighting. It snaps at Grith, but misses by a wide margin.
