"Thank you, Father Zantus." Zenaida looks tired, allowing the rest of the group to take the lead in the conversation. "I trained at Magnimar's temple of Iomedae, so I suggest we start looking for a healer who can cure ghoul fever there."

While the others are talking, a familiar dwarven face puffs up the stairs and into the main room where you are all talking. Dol has come to check on you. He seems upset. "GIRL! I spent hours on that ornamentation! And look what you've already done to it!" He gestures to your breastplate, now scuffed, marred and dented from fighting. "Give it here, and I'll see if I can get it fixed up before you head out again." He starts attack the buckles and straps presumbtively, and ignoring all the others in the group beyond a respectfull nod to Loth.

"I didn't do anything to it, that was all the ghouls' fault!", Zenaida protests. She lets Dol take her armor away, though. It's not like she'll need it in town, and having a real dwarven blacksmith repair one's armor is a rare honor for non-dwarves.

"Fair enough," he mumbles in response to the sheriff's reply. Good enough to leave it at that: he's not intent on sticking around for the town council meeting, that's for sure. He's sure they can set a house on fire without him. Magnimar beckons.

When Dol comes down, Loth smiles and nods back, glad to see he's doing well.

Loth looks to his companions. "Do any of you have any plans? I think I'm gonna try and sleep this fever off, but how about we meet up for dinner at the Rusty Dragon later? Great place."

Farmageddon

(Okay, so it wasn't late Monday, it's mid Tuesday (for me). I should be back to a more normal posting schedule starting now. Coming up in Mid Feb, I have jury duty. Don't know how that'll affect my posting, so we can all find out together.)

@Alain: (re: the killing) Father Zantus sighs slowly. "There has long been speculation. Aldern's grandparents disappeared suddenly one night, his parents died rather mysteriously, and his own wife Ieasha he claims moved to Magnimar and refuses to visit. His family has an unlucky reputation, to say the least."

@Zenaida: (re: where you trained) "Iomedae? Really? She doesn't tend to attact to many native Varisian's. To strict with their code, I've heard." Father Zantus seems surprised and impressed.
@Zenaida 2: (re: your armor) Dol just grunts and grumbles as stomps back down the stairs outside.

@Zenaida & Tarphrex: You make your way to the north of town to a squat, stone building where-in the jeweler works. Maver Kesk is a tall, thin man, vainly trying to smooth his wild hair as he stands just outside the shop while his wife (Pennae) scolds him, loudly, for leaving the front door open and unlocked. Again. The shop's guard obviously acts as though he can hear and see none of this. But with your approach, the spat cuts short and you are more than welcome to use his tools and work space, though the guard eyes Tarphrex suspicously.

@Everyone: The Rusty Dragon Inn is a lively place. Ameiko is a human woman of Tian descent that grew up here in Sandpoint. She left to go adventuring, much to her family's (read, her father's) disdain. Returning better off, she bought The Rusty Dragon Inn, named for a metal dragon statue the size of a horse that has long ago rusted, and has been running the place ever since. Usually verbose and lively, she's been more subdued lately since the gruesome death of her father by her half-borther by covering him with molten glass from the town's glassworks (book 1) and inheriting said glassworks and all the responsibilities that go with it. Never-the-less, she is glad to see you all, and offers free rooms for those who have done so much in service of Sandpoint so long as they share their story of the latest adventure. Alain is included with barely a glance as he is obviously with the group. Food and drinks are provided, and Bethana (the halfling woman who works there) tries her best to flirt with Loth despite being so busy. The townsfolk are eager to hear the story of what happened in "that creepy old house up on the hill", and more come in just to hear the story. Presuming one of you is willing to tell the tale. Late, Dol grumbles in with Zenaida's breatplate piece and plops it gently on the table near her with a finger shaking at her while he warns Zenaida that the next time he sees it, it better be in good shape, or he might actually charge her for the work.

The evening passes with as much comraderie as the party will allow, with food and drink, the locals playfully comparing Tarphrex to the dragon statue up in its alcove. Some try to get Alain drunk by sneaking him harder drinks than the others, and Sherman is invited to play senet by some of the older patrons.

When you awaken the next morning, Loth and Zenaida find that the priest's attentive care has helped stave off the deterious affects of the disease, and are feeling much the same as yesterday. (Ghoul fever takes 2 consecutive saves. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.) The group meets up at again outside The Rusty Dragon Inn, now quiet, Bethana serving a simple breakfast of oatmeal.

Sheriff Hemlock is there, along with 3 horses and a pony for Loth. He informs the group, "Discussed it with the mayor. We've seized the property of the Foxglove Manor in the name of the city. We'll see what the council wants to do today. Should be gone by the time you get back. One way or another." He bids you farewell after handing off the horses and pony (Tarphrex is meant to share with one of the bigger folk, since most horses are skittish around him). The saddlebags have trail rations, and Balor gives Loth a sack of coin (500 gp) "from the city".

And so the journey continues. For many of you, this return to Magnimar is a return home. The road is an easy one, it simply follows the coast south. After a day of riding, you arrive at the City of Monuments. Built where the Yondabakari River meets the Inner Sea, the city is nestled under a cliff from which sticks the remains of a MASSIVE bridge from ancient Thassailon. Known for its light trade policies, the city is onr of 4 city states in Varisia and all sorts find their way here to start anew. You pass several caravans of Varisians and their wagons parked off the road near the gates, their brightly painted wagons and even brighter clothes competeing with the lively music to capture the attention as the evening wanes. As you enter the city proper from The Lost Coast Road, you're in the north part of the town. Atop the cliff, the older and more prosper make their homes. Undoubtedly, this is where the Foxglove Townhouse is. But it is rather late to search half a city for home you know only by name.

Where would everyone like to go first? There was mention of the Temple of Iomedae, but several (if not all) of you have homes here.

Loth sighs deeply. He had only supposed to be gone for a few days, and yet, it feels like ages and ages since he last set foot in Magnimar.

He doesn't particularly like it here. Especially compared to how welcoming and warm Sandpoint had been, Magnimar feels outright hostile in comparison. A city like this can chew you up and spit you out if you fall out of favor. And the Dalveran household... well, favor had been running thin.

Farmageddon

(Sounds like its off to Loth's family's home.)

The lot of you ride/walk your horses through town, heading north towards the water and where a great ramp connects the top of the cliff (where you are) to the bottom. City watch patrols briefly eye such an obvious group of adventurers, but they quickly move on. And, as you travel, you see why. Not far from the gate, in one of the wealthy parts of town, is a Pathfinder Lodge. Heidmarch Manor and its grounds serve as a waystation and meeting ground for all manor of peoples and Pathfinder Society business is a varied as they come. As you move west through the city, it becomes both poorer and busier. Reaching the bottom of the ramp connecting the upper and lower cities, you are close to the water and thus close to business. Warehouses, marketplaces, and merchants galore make up this part of the town, a part that never really stops. Ships are loading and unloading at all times of day, and express shipments are handled as soon as possible. Even now, with the sun setting behind you, ships move in and out of the docks, bound to and from ports all across the Inner Sea.

You pass the Bazaar of Sails, the cities largest marketplaces, in a large, open square. The stalls and tents are first come, first serve, selling eveything legal in the city to sell, and few that aren't. And the whole place is covered in brightly dyed ship's sails, bathing it in a rainbow of colors when the sun is high. Mostly empty this late in the day, you're able to pass through relatively easily.

And finally, you reach Beacon's Point. The section of the town that juts out to help form the harbor, a massive, statue-covered lighthouse looms over the rest of the neighborhood. You've passed numerous statues and memorials as you passed through the city streets, almost every intersection and square has one. This one marks the spot where the city founder Lord Indros defeated a great beast that lived in the bay and thus made the area safe to settle.

The horses' shoes phump into the packed dirt streets as Loth leads you to his home, a simple buidling of wood and stone.

@Loth, this is your home. How would you approach it?

_______

(Side note: If any of you read up on Magnimar on the Pathfinder Wiki, not all of that info is currently accurate. Some stuff there hasn't happened yet. Mostly, who the current Lord-Mayor is. That being said, I do encourage you to read up on at least the basics of the city there. Probably won't be important, but just an FYI.)

Loth approaches with... hesitation. His family's recent struggles come to mind, how their trading company fell from grace after the rumor came out that his adventuring grandfather left his comrades to die and vanished altogether. The family resented him for that.

And now here he is, with the scars and loot of an adventurer's life with him. The spitting image of his grandfather when he was young. History repeats itself.

But there's no sense in delaying the inevitable. He turns to his companions and says, "It might be a little cramped... but welcome to House Dalveran."

He then opens the front door and sheepishly calls. "Hey, I'm home..."

I assume he has the key to his own front door.

Farmageddon

(It's your home. If you think Loth would have a key, he has a key.)

The door opens directly into the living/dining area, where all that remains of your family are seated around the table. Your parents, your two sisters, and your aunt are all paused, eyes on the door where they heard the key in the lock. A brief pause before those outside can hear the scrapping of wood on wood as Loth's family quickly stands to swarm around him, exclamations of surprise and relief. Your father's eyes are wet at seeing you, and your mother gently chides you for being gone for so long as she hugs you. All the murmuring is cut short when they notice the rest of the group outside. After their recent misfortunes, they seem wary of such strangers, and your Aunt Nente asks softly, "Loth, what sort of people have you taken up with?"
Your sisters move to the far side of the room, and your parents square up together.

Loth turns to the others. "These are friends of mine. Zenaida, Reverend Blake, Alain and Tarphrex."

Hopefully that reassures them somewhat. "They're good people, I promise. I'll be helping them out with some... stuff, while they're here in Magnimar. Religious stuff, mostly."

He tries to laugh off his family's worries. "I imagine we must look like a strange crew, but that's just kinda how things turn out in Sandpoint. It's very accepting, very welcoming, and you meet the most interesting people there. I'm sure once you get to know them, you'll like 'em just as much as I do. Even this fearful dragon over here!" he says jokingly, softly elbowing Tarphrex.

Loth has been a good friend and a skilled fighter; there are few others I would trust as much at my back. I am Zenaida Radulescu, a priestess of the empyreal lord Falayna. If you have had occasion to buy jewelry in the past, you may be familiar with my parents and brother at Radulescu Jewelers here in Magnimar." Maybe a mention of local, law-abiding ties can help put the Dalverans at ease. There is an unfortunate stereotype of Varisians being shiftless thieves. Although people say much the same thing about halflings, so perhaps Loth's family will be more tolerant in that regard.

Farmageddon

The family seems relieved at Loth's words of reassurance. They visibly relax tense shoulders, and welcome everyone into their home. It is rather cramped for most of you, being sized for halflings and all that, but accomadates the humans if they duck their heads.

Loth's father (Beregost) goes to try and convince the eldest daughter to sit back down, you all can catch the words "your state" as he chides her to a seat, while Loth's mother takes up the introductionns, shaking hands as you all enter the room.
"It's good to see my boy taking up with stalwart people. It has been rough on him lately. I'm Sayel, my husband over there is Beregost. My daughters Daena and Izith, and my husband's sister Nente. Please, everyone have a seat where you can. I'll make tea." She pats Loth's shoulder as she passes, sweeping Izith up to help (and insisting Daena stays seated when she tries to get up to help).
Nente starts to clear away empty dishes, and gives a wary eye still to all the strangers.
Beregost gives Loth another hug and says, "Well, would you like to go first? Or do you want to hear our news?"

"Well, if you have news, I'd be thrilled to hear it! My stories can wait, I can guarantee you they're not particularly great."

Farmageddon

As everyone gets seated, with smiles for Sherman and the other's kind words, Loth's father begins. "None of ours are going to knock your socks off either. We heard from our contacts that there was some disturbance during the festival in Sandpoint, but we got the payment for our goods. So that all went well. Things have still be tough since your grandfather disappeared, but we have a new business contact. The 7 Brothers. Some new equity firm from the island. They want to branch out from lumber. Hopefully, if we can continue to prove ourselves loyal and steadfast business partners, some of our old clients will return."

Sayel chimes in from the kitchen, explaining to the group, "Loth's grandfather is a good man. But he disappeared while adventuring. And rumors being what they are, people listen more than they think and we lost a lot of business because of it."

Beregost grimaces at that, "True enough. But we'll pull through. Always have. Other news, there's been murders in town. And not just the usual ones you'd expect. In the nicer parts of town, up on top of the cliff. Got the Lord-Mayor in an uproar, rumor is. And he doesn't stir for anything outside his own comfort. Heard some talk of trade weakening with Riddleport, some trouble up there. And Korvosa is supposedly upping their tolls for outsiders to exhorbitant rates. " He pauses, finger on his chin as he thinks for bit. "That's 'bout the lot of it."

After a brief pause, Nente scoffs, but Izith is the one who speaks, carrying over-sized tea cups to the guests (and a 'normal' sized one for Tarphrex). "Daena's fiance ran off after we had to move and found out she's pregnant." She says it softly, but loud enough that all can hear. Daena blushes, tears forming but not dropping; she keeps her chin up.

Dad's story is something of a rollercoaster for Loth. He smirks at the notion of 'some' disturbance at the festival, thinking of the hectic goblin attack he took part in fighting off. Hearing of a new long-term business partner brings a smile to his face, wonderful news after the hardships.

He nods along with Sayel's explanation, somewhat relieved that the hate for his granddad hasn't spread to his own family. Not that it ever would, of course, but still.

When the murders are mentioned, he glances at his fellows. It can hardly be a coincidence, can it? They're going to have to look into it.

For all this, he remains quiet, but when Izith breaks the news, he stands up in frustration.
"What!? That fairweather son of a..."
He catches himself and takes a breath, then walks to Daena to hug her. "I'm so sorry, sis. I'll do everything I can to help you."

@Tarphrex: Izith follows you into the kitchen, getting you a rag towel and helping clean up the mess.

@Loth: Daena's face is red, but whether from embarassment or anger, you're unsure. "Thank you, brother. But I'll handle Obar myself. Though I wouldn't mind the lady's advice." She nods her head towards Zenaida, recognizing her choice of worship.

Aunt Nente breaks in, "Enough jibber-jabber. Where have you been boy? You were supposed to be back a week ago!" Aunt Nente often gets like this, hiding her feelings behind a rough exterior.

Loht's whole family turns their eyes to the group at large, waiting to hear the story.

Up until now, Loth had some reluctance to talk about everything that's happened. Worried that his adventuring career, no matter how accidentally it started, might draw some ire after what happened to grandpa Lilor.

But it seemed like he really didn't have to worry at all.

He recounts his story from the start: how the Swallowtail Festival had been attacked by goblins and how the town had fought them off. How he and his friends were asked to investigate in the aftermath.

How Sandpoint local Tsuto Kaijitsu killed his father, orchestrated the goblin attack, then kidnapped his sister Ameiko, and holed up in the Kaijitsu family glassworks, and how saving her lead to the discovery of the catacombs underneath.

How investigating those pointed to a shadowy ringleader, the aasimar Nualia, responsible for Tsuto's actions. Her role in uniting the goblin tribes. How Loth and his friends went to Thistletop to face her and her goblin minions down, and came out victorious, having protected Sandpoint from an attack far, far worse.

During this, he speaks fondly of those who had fought alongside him: the serious and fiery cleric Dol, the charmingly unworldly barbarian Mizzug, Bumbo the brave, cowardly gnome and his aggressive boar familiar Toot, Razkiv, the devoted Shoanti druid and Krug, the kind-hearted half-orc.

And finally, with more difficulty as it starts hitting closer to home (somewhat literally), he tells about His Lordship, Aldern Foxglove, who had been turning people into ghoul servants and sent them off to perform ritualistic murders. How he and the amazing friends seated next to him chased Aldern down into his manor, the Misgivings, and put an end to his spree.

And how that had finally lead them here, their work not quite done yet.

Writing up this quick recap for both the in-game family as well as possibly the convenience of other players made me realise I'm the only one left of the original party... Somewhat bittersweet. Hope you guys don't mind me waxing sentimental about that for a bit lol

@Loth: That was wonderful. Thank you. And yeah, its just Loth. But at least Dol and Razkiv are still around (ish). It's strange to see how many have come in and out. I will say that I'm very pleased with our current group. You're all fantastic to play with. But I think we lost Alain.

Loth's family listens with rapt attention. But towards the end, Beregost and Sayel exchange confused looks. They don't say anything until Loth is done talking though. And then Sayel places her hand on Loth's, asking quietly as she sees her son's distress, "You're sure it was Aldern Foxglove? Absolutely sure? Because we saw him yesterday. He is our contact with the 7 Brothers."

"By the gods... this just doesn't end, does it?" Zenaida leans back in her chair, letting out a long sigh. "I, at least, am satisfied that the ghoul we encountered was Aldern Foxglove. His wife Iesha was a cousin of mine. Even as a ghost, I recognized her, and she in turn recognized her murderous husband." And beat him to death. That was extremely satisfying to watch. "Given that Aldern was apparently a wealthy man, I think it likely that someone is using his face and name in order to access his funds." It wouldn't even be that hard. Illusion magic good enough to fool someone who doesn't know the subject well is easy to come by in a city the size of Magnimar.

"This is all very worrying news." Sherman says gravely, and it seems like his face has gone a shade paler than before.

"Allow me to give some advice, if I may be so bold... Please refrain from any dealings with 7 brothers for the time being. We shall investigate into the matter, and try to understand what is going on. Whether this is real Aldern Foxglove, or someone impersonating him, he cannot be up to no good."

Then he turns to address his companions. "I apologize for speaking out for all of us, without consulting you. I can only hope you'll agree."

The color drains from Loth's face as he hears this. He puts his mother's hand in both his own, and looks at her. "Whatever's going on, we're going to look into it. Your safety is my only goal right now."

He thinks for a moment. "For now we have some other leads to look into as well, but when are you meeting him again?" Loth turns to the others. "We might want to be present for that. See this Aldern, fake or not, with our own eyes."

Then, he looks at his family, one by one. "I am so sorry about this. Finally some good news, and here I am to cast a shadow over it. But I promise we'll fix this."

He gives a soft smile to Daena. "After all, I'd be a lousy uncle-to-be if I didn't do my part to keep the family safe."

Upon hearing Sherman's suggestion, he somewhat changes his tune. "I don't mind that either, but Reverend, are you alright? Is something bothering you?"

Alain remains oddly quiet, these people still very new to him, having likely been working together longer, he didnt quite feel comfortable enough to begin getting personal.
as soon as Aldern is mentioned, Disguise of some sort, or magics. perhaps he was replaced or the one prior was a replacement. Either way we should alert proper authorities and plan. Serious situation, should something be amiss i'll be able to tell, benefits of my training being able to see someones sins.

Alains weight shifts, placing a hand on his holy symbol, Likely this is a group, Criminals often work together to supplement their weakness. It's likely to go further than even this.

Farmageddon

The family of halflings seemed shocked, afraid, and then Sayel looks terrified when her little boy suggests getting involved. "No, no Loth. You just let me and your father take care of it. No need to concern yourself."
But her concerns are cut through by Aunt Nente, "Don't be foolish Sayel. The boy's not a boy anymore. He has the same look in his eyes as his grandfather did." Nente looks directly into Loth's face, her own eyes full of pity. "He's seen things now. Things that'll be with him every moment for the rest of his life. There's no undoing that now." She looks at the rest of the group. "They all have. Let them handle it."

Beregost looks sad, but proud at the same time. Then begins writing, he quickly finishes before sliding the paper across the table to Loth. It is an address, in the nicer parts of town. "We were supposed to have lunch with them. Two days time. I think its better if you went instead. To represent our interests, as it were."

AT THE SAME TIME:

@Zenaida: Daena looks at you, and reaches out to pat your shoulder, "I'm sorry to hear about your cousin. But I also meet Aldern, and his wife Iesha. At their town house. Is there any chance you are wrong? Maybe she's still alive?"

@Tarphrex: Izith answers one of your questions, "They're an equity firm. They raise money from various sources and invest that money. Into merchants, businesses, that sort of thing." This makes total sense to her, but maybe not to someone not used to cities and commerce.

@Loth: Daena just smiles weakly and puts her hands over her belly.

@Alain & Sherman: Nente agrees with you both, "No harm in letting them check it out." But she sees Sherman go pale(r) and looks at him with sharp eyes, waiting to see how he answers Loth.

Zenaida sighs, but offers Daena a weary smile. "Oh, I'm quite sure it was her. Once she had her revenge on Aldern and her anger cooled, she recognized me. Blew me a kiss right before she vanished." Oh, how she hopes that poor Iesha won't be condemned to the Lower Planes for actions she took as a ghost. Surely Pharasma understands that undeath warps a person's mind, and that Iesha did not intend to rise after her death.

Belegost goes red, like really red, all through his neck and straight to his hair line. He mumbles, "Right, right. Of course." He then goes into the kitchen and makes himself look busy.

Aunt Nente comes to the "rescue", though. "Well! That was awkward. Putting all that aside, I'm going to bed. It was a pleasure to meet you all, and thank you for your offers of assistance."
