[PACS] [Gameday VIII] The Hao Jin Cataclysm by Yewstance

Game Master Yewstance

PLAYER HANDS || SUMMONABLE BANES || SHIPS

TURN ORDER:
1 - Seoni/EmpTyger
2 - Aric/Abraham Z.
3 - Maznar/Bigguyinblack/
4 - Zova/Nathan Davis

Ship & Plunder Rules:
Commanding and Moving Ships
Whenever it is your turn, if your ship is not anchored at a location, you are commanding your party’s ship. All characters at your location are on the ship; characters at other locations are not on the ship. If you move or are moved while commanding the ship, other characters on the ship may choose to move with you. Effects that restrict movement still apply—if something prevents you from moving, you can’t move; if something is preventing another character at your location from moving, that character cannot move with you. Any character who does not move with you is no longer on the ship.

Whenever it is your turn, if your ship is anchored and you are at the ship’s location, you are commanding your party’s ship; all characters at your location are on the ship. You may not choose to move an anchored ship. If your character moves or is moved from the ship’s location, you are no longer on the ship or commanding it, and other characters may not choose to move with you.

Encountering Ships
While you are commanding a ship, you may encounter other ships. If you are not commanding a ship, banish any ship you would encounter. Even though a ship is neither a bane nor a boon, encountering a ship is much like encountering a bane: if you don’t evade it, you must attempt a check to defeat it. If you succeed at all of the checks required to defeat a ship, and your ship is not wrecked, stash a plunder card. If you fail a check to defeat a ship, it does not deal damage to your character; instead, it deals Structural damage to your ship. Whether you succeed or fail to defeat a ship, unless you seize it, return it to wherever it came from.

Plunder Table
Roll 1d6 to determine which card type is stashed as Plunder. Plunder cards are stashed underneath your Ship, and you begin each scenario with a random Plunder card.
1 - Weapon
2 - Spell
3 - Armor
4 - Item
5 - Ally
6 - Choose 1 of the above 5 card types

Seizing Ships
Some cards allow you to seize a ship you defeat. If you seize a ship, it replaces your current ship, which is banished. Take any plunder cards that were under your original ship and put them under your new ship.

Structural Damage
Structural damage is a special type of damage; it does not affect characters, and it is the only type of damage that affects ships. Cards that reduce damage only to characters do not affect Structural damage. If you fail a check to defeat a ship, it deals an amount of Structural damage to your ship equal to the difference between the difficulty to defeat the ship and your check result.

When your ship is dealt Structural damage, first apply any powers on the ship card or other cards in play that reduce or increase that damage. Then characters may play cards or use powers that affect Structural damage. Finally, any character may discard any number of cards from his hand to reduce Structural damage by 1 for each such discarded card. If the Structural damage is reduced to 0, the ship is unaffected.

If a ship that is not already wrecked is successfully dealt any Structural damage, it is wrecked; you do not need to discard cards equal to the amount of damage—the effect is the same regardless of the amount of damage that is dealt. If a ship that is already wrecked is successfully dealt any Structural damage, discard a number of cards from the blessings deck equal to the amount of damage successfully dealt to the ship.

Wrecked Ships
When commanding a wrecked ship, at the start of your move step, you may attempt the check to repair the ship listed on the ship card; if you succeed, the ship is no longer wrecked. If you move while commanding a wrecked ship, other characters cannot choose to move with you. When a ship is wrecked, you can never stash more plunder cards under it. At the end of any turn, if your ship is wrecked, banish 1 random plunder card from under the ship.

Guess who's back?
Back ag-

-I already made that reference, nevermind.

Welcome back all for yet another Special! Is this the only ACG special that this table hasn't completed yet? I honestly don't have a list of all of the ACG specials so I have no clue! XD

Don't forget we will be running this under the Core Rules; if there's any questions about this, feel free to ask.

Additionally, is there a preference for using Google Hangouts or Discord to facilitate communication among the table?

Seoni is back, albeit with some growing pains.
She is Tier 3 with 2 skill/2 power/4 card feats. Which I think means I'll be ineligible to gain further card feats until Tier 4?

I'd personally prefer either Hangouts or on-site discussion thread over Discord. But if everyone else wants Discord, I'd accommodate.

Correct regarding Card Feats. If you are forcibly given one outside of Tier Progression - such as by an adventure reward - it's converted to a normal, banked Hero Point.

deck handler desired upgrades Spell 2, Ally 2

I'll be playing Maznar.

I've no mechanical reason to favor one over the other. Flavorwise, our old friend Grazzle might incline us to starting with A? (And LN Seoni clearly prefers going in alphabetic order, all things being equal.)

Deck Handler // Searching For: Spell 2 > Armor 2 > Ally 2

I'll jam through building my deck today. And then leave it to EmpTyger to bot in my initial absence.

IMPORTANT UPDATE (That will likely work in Nathan's favour)

The start of Gameday VIII has been delayed by 2 weeks. Below is the email I have received on the matter.

Gameday VIII Delay:
Hey Everyone,

I have some unfortunate news. I regret to inform you all that we will have to postpone Gameday VIII by 2 weeks.

This would place our new dates for Gameday at: 09 Sept 2019 - 17 Nov 2019

WHAT IS GOING ON? WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?

As most of you are aware, the majority of the GM’s have not received their scenario support for the Convention to include a good portion of the Specials. With Tonya occupied by other duties this weekend, we realized as a team that we are very unlikely to see the remainder of scenario support drop by Monday the 26th. Multiple avenues were discussed and what seems to be the best solution is to push Gameday back by two weeks. This will allow enough time for the GM’s to receive their scenarios and prep them.

BUT WHAT IF WE ALREADY HAVE OUR SCENARIOS, CAN WE START THEM?

Please hold off until the new start date to be able to eligible for your boon rewards. I understand this is a large inconvenience, we are doing everything we can to make this work. Part of that is to have everyone one the same start / end times rather than scattered.

We apologize for the inconvenience that this may cause, but we want all our GMs to have a chance to shine.

HOW DO I NOTIFY MY PLAYERS?

Go ahead and post the news to your tables. Feel free to copy this email if you wish. We will be posting notices in all the PBP lodges as well as the Gameday VIII Announcement page.

I know this is not what we hoped to do, and I’m sorry. Thank you for understanding that we’re scrambling to fix this.

If you have any other questions please don’t be afraid to ask.

-Tyranius

Aric/Red Raven deck handler | Looking for: not sure

No preference about which order we play the scenarios in.

I'll be playing Aric/Red Raven, who is currently tier 2, with 2 xp. He's got two each of the feats (power, skill, card) due to receiving a bonus feat as an adventure reward, which means he can't get any more feats until he starts tier 3. What tier (and/or AD#) is this adventure?

Regardless, I'll be playing for tiering up rewards, but just will go as slow as needed to make sure I don't tier out of the scenario range.

The AD#/Tier is 2. Note that this means, if you've earned a Role Card, you are not allowed to play with it (this basically means you can only have 2 power feats checked, in most cases).

Earned Feats (from scenario/Adventure rewards) from Seasons 0-5 are supposed to push your limit of that feat to Tier+1, but the Conversion Rules doesn't quite take that into consideration in some cases. I consider that a flaw of the Conversion Rules rather than an intended limitation, so I'd be happy you earning a third Card Feat, personally.

Small reward spoiler:
Like every special, without exception (to my knowledge), the Adventure Reward here is another Card Feat. If you're already at Tier+1 Card Feats, it'll be converted into a regular Hero Point (which you cannot expend on a feat).

I'm hoping, when they make new specials now that Core has hit, they will give out rewards that actually work if one character plays in multiple specials.

If you guys want to stick as a group and do a Tier 5 special in the future, be sure to co-ordinate that as far in advance as possible so I can make sure I sign up to BR the right Tier. :)

deck handler desired upgrades Spell 2, Ally 2

I'll be playing Maznar who has just hit tier 2.

I've pretty much set up everything I can so far; I'll wait until we're closer to the (new) official start date of Monday, September 9th before you'll see the first scenario.

So far, it looks like the agreement is that you'll start with scenario A. I am also accepting your Turn Order suggestions and requests at this time.

You'll see in the Header that I've set up a spreadsheet to collect relevant information for the table; I'll append information there as needed or as becomes relevant. Let me know if there's anything more I can do to help or prepare the table!

Perhaps have Aric go immediately after Seoni? Since Abraham goes after me in another game we're both in.

Aric/Red Raven deck handler | Looking for: not sure

Works for me. I'll often get to examine the top card of my location at the end of my turn if that affects who would be best suited to go after Aric.

deck handler desired upgrades Spell 2, Ally 2

Abraham tends to post a bit after I try go to sleep. So I can go after him or if anyone plans to post well after him (About 12 - 1 AM PDT) they can go before me.

Hi all,

Part 1 begins 9/9. The BR can post the first scenario but no turns can be taken. I'd encourage everyone to use this day to get starting locations/hands posted.

Part 2 begins 9/10. This is when the first turn can be taken.

Let me know if there are any questions. Thanks!

Deck Handler // Searching For: Spell 2 > Armor 2 > Ally 2

So Turn Order...
Seoni
Aric/Red Raven
Maznar
Zova

Sound good?

deck handler desired upgrades Spell 2, Ally 2

Sure.

Aric/Red Raven deck handler | Looking for: not sure

Fine with me.

deck handler desired upgrades Spell 2, Ally 2

Maznar is playing for progression. Don't want the item 2. I could use either the item 1 or spell 1, Whichever Zova doesn't want.

Will spend my hero point on +1 wisdom.

boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 8

Deck Handler // Searching For: Spell 2 > Armor 2 > Ally 2

Playing for Progression
Boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 11

Upgrade
Item 1: 1d1000 ⇒ 348
Spell 1: 1d1000 ⇒ 533

Hero Point
Power Feat:
On your Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution check, you may discard (☑ or recharge) a card that has the Animal trait to add your Survival skill.

deck handler desired upgrades Spell 2, Ally 2

Looks like Zova wants item 1 so she gets that, Maznar will take spell 1 upgrading Fireblade to Sphere of Fire. And there is an item 2 if Aric wants it.

As mentioned in the hangout, Seoni is playing for tier advancement, and will not be needing any upgrades from B/1/2.

I keep wavering between which skill feat to take among INT+1/WIS+1/CHA+3. At the moment I'm leaning towards WIS+1, but I think I'd like to sleep on it.
INT/Knowledge is the obvious choice for a side skill to develop, being my next largest die, but WIS/Perception is likely more immediately useful in a S&S adventure. Although since this is my specials character, the next adventure could be anything. (Although I'd personally wager CotCT, which I haven't played into far enough to know which skills might be more useful.) I could defer the decision a tier by taking CHA now, but since Seoni will be gaining +4 to all checks at Tier 5, I'd rather take my side skills before then.

10-00A reward: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Nope

Aric/Red Raven deck handler | Looking for: not sure

Aric is playing for tier advancement.

Aric (tier 2) already has 2 feats of each type, so he stashes his shiny new hero point for a rainy day.

10-00 boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 6

During the last scenario, Aric banished Clockwork Spy. He replaces it with... Clockwork Spy.

Card Upgrade: Aric will not take any upgrade.

Sorry for the delay. Giving the edge to WIS, since it could help pick up Divine spells/Animal allies, which does have some synergy with one of Seoni's powers.

You may discard a spell to search your deck ([x] or your discard pile) for an ally that has the Animal trait and put it in your hand.

boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 3

Don't want any of the upgrades. And it sounds like Zova and Aric want to wait on the next part which is fine.

I'm okay waiting until the next part, unless word comes down that extra successes are needed.

10-00B reward: 1d20 ⇒ 8
10-00C reward: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Nope x2

EmpTyger wrote:

Agreed.

Seoni will be wanting a spell for the Patchwork Allies reward.

Deck Handler // Searching For: Spell 2 > Armor 2 > Ally 2

Zova also wants Spell

No preference for plunder.
Going by flavor, Seoni's first choice would be culture, second choice would probably be fortifications.

Aric/Red Raven deck handler | Looking for: not sure

Aric chooses Weapon Spell for the Patchwork Allies reward.

No preference for plunder.

Aric votes for Fortifications.

Will start at the docks with the others.

Aric/Red Raven deck handler | Looking for: not sure

boon for 10-00D?: 1d20 ⇒ 7

Aric's preferences for upgrades (I'm not sure what our options are, so disregard any that are irrelevant):

Weapon 2: 1d1000 ⇒ 749
Blessing 2: 1d1000 ⇒ 695
otherwise, no upgrades

This scenario brings me to tier 3, 2 xp. I already have 3 skill feats, 3 card feats, and 2 power feats. I think I cannot add a 3rd power feat at this time (or it would be pointless to do so) because this would have to be marked on my role card, which cannot yet be used (since the entire special is at level 2), correct? In which case I'll simply save my hero point from this scenario.

You could take the role+3rd power feat now, but you're correct: it wouldn't be usable until you play an eligible adventure. (Which is what Seoni's done.)

10-00D reward: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Nope

Aric/Red Raven deck handler | Looking for: not sure

Ah, makes sense and I'll do that (take the role & power feat, even though I can't use it yet).

For Aric: "When you acquire a boon, you may examine the top card of your location deck." - this is actually a power available to him even without the role card, but I think I still can't use it since it is marked on the role card.

For Red Raven: "At the start of your turn (X or when you examine a card in a location deck) (X or when you defeat a monster), you may replace your character and token with Aric's. Then you may exchange a card in your hand with a card in your kit." - checking "or when you defeat a monster" - this is not usable until I can use my role card.

'

That's all correct! (Incidentally, the fact that power feats you earn after getting a role card are not actually marked on your character card - even if they are also on your character card - is a common misunderstanding among PACG players, so it's refreshing that it's perfectly understood by this table. It doesn't really come up in home play almost at all - it's only really relevant if you're overleveled in Organized Play or if you have some kind of role card removal effect, which are vanishingly rare.)

Congratulations on your success! You may replay this scenario two more times, defending a different area each time for different boon rewards and to report more Successes. If that is your intention, please agree on what to protect next (though I assume it will be Culture).

Additionally, please indicate whether you would like me to draw a non-basic Weapon or Armor for your scenario reward.

boon?: 1d20 ⇒ 8

No feats left to buy.

And voting to replay choosing culture next.

Good to play Culture.

Aric/Red Raven deck handler | Looking for: not sure

I’m fine with culture too

Scenario Reward: Drawn Cards...
(The Transition Guide of the Core Rulebook states that "Basic" just means any level 0 boon when playing with the Core Rulebook. So a 'non-basic' just means a non-level 0 boon.)
(Good thing, too, because before I caught that I just drew 4 non-basic Weapon 0s in a row.)

Dragon Pistol +1 (Weapon 2)
Falcata +1 (Weapon 1)
Zul (Weapon 2)
Toxic Blunderbuss +1 (Weapon 2)

(I also completely forgot your Plunder cards, sorry; you also got...)

Fireblade (Spell 0)
Illuminate (Spell 1)

deck handler desired upgrades Spell 2, Ally 2

So it looks like

Seoni - no upgrades.
Aric - Weapon 2 + Blessing 2
Zova - Weapon 2 and I'll cede the ally 2 to her
Maznar - Spell 1

Aric/Red Raven deck handler | Looking for: not sure

Is everyone happy with this? I don't want to be greedy so I can give up the Weapon 2 or Blessing 2 if it helps someone to get more what they want?

Otherwise, I'll use these upgrades as follows:

Weapon 2: add Menacing Backsword +1, replacing Kukri.

Blessing 2: add Blessing of Zon-Kuthon, replacing Blessing of the Spy.

And, confirming, using my Hero Point to take a Power Feat (which, since I'm tier 3, is checked on my role card, and therefore is irrelevant for the rest of this tier 2 special; also, noting that neither Aric nor Red Raven have any choice of Role card). Aric: "When you acquire a boon, you may examine the top card of your location deck." Red Raven: "At the start of your turn (X or when you examine a card in a location deck) (X or when you defeat a monster), you may replace your character and token with Aric's. Then you may exchange a card in your hand with a card in your kit." - checking "or when you defeat a monster".

Deck Handler // Searching For: Spell 2 > Armor 2 > Ally 2

Upgrades
Replacing Ally 0 Vulture with Ally 2 Thylacine
Replacing Weapon 0 Hatchet with Weapon 2 Beaststrike Club

I'm not completely certain about the Tempest Cay closing sequence. Although in retrospect I probably could have moved to the new Astral Rift taking everyone, and then could have just Seoni move randomly back to Tempest Cay.

10-00D replay reward: 1d20 ⇒ 20
