1: It's Latin, duh. 2: it's STILL that way in a lot of theater and lit. -1 for Jasper.

The party eschews a return trip to town, and heads out for the drop point. FORT: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23. Despite the poison, Penryn seems to be doing just fine now.

It's not a long walk, and before long the party can easily see the large stump. Given that it's a large stump in a small clearing, there's no chance of having the wrong location.

Inside are a few empty crates, but nothing of value....

Unfortunately, it looks like there are no tracks. Whoever uses this place, including the late Hallod, has done a solid job covering.

As they search the stump, Penryn considers what they've found so far, and can't quite summon up a theory that brings it all together to point to a culprit in Bort's murder. "Yeah, I guess that makes sense, Kaleb," he concurs, "maybe we go tell the sheriff what we've found. He might have an idea who this 'V' is."

As he speaks, Penny is also thinking on the note they found. So there was a load of corpse blood in our caravan? I wonder where it was, and who received it. And what they'd use it for?

DM - I assume a Religion check would be appropriate to understand what they might be doing with the corpse blood mentioned in the note from "V"?

Religion: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 If it's Arcana or Crafting or another Int-based skill that fits better, my bonus is +6.

Jasper lets Penryn do his thing. "My cousin has a nose for the truth," he confides to no one in particular.

He then picks up the two vials with their foreign liquids, and studies them intently. He picks up a leaf off the ground, letting a drop of liquid from each touch the leaf, then studies some more. He follows this up with a battery of other obscure tests that look like total guesswork but somehow fit with the halfling's methods.

Nature (Identify Magic) vs Light Blue Potion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Nature (Identify Magic) vs Red syrupy Potion: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Assuming it's Primal magic. If it's Divine, the modifier is the same. If it's Arcane or Occult though, Jasper his tests are useless (not trained in either)

Penryn looks around, and is reasonably confident that there's nothing actually special about this place that the party is missing.

The blue potion is a lesser healing potion. The other is a lesser juggernaut mutagen.

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

Penryn, yes a Religion check may help. After that.... what's the party doing?

Horizon Hunters

M Halfling Investigator 3 | HP 30 | AC 17 | Fort +7 | Ref +10 | Will +9 | Perc +9

I made the Religion check above, got a 13. Would be good if others took a shot at it too.

Penryn takes a step away from the party and the conversation about where to go next, and his gaze turns inward. His eyes dart about, as if he's reviewing a complex catalog of information stored in his brain, and he begins to nod slowly. With a quick nod that breaks him out of his thoughtful reverie, he turns to the party and says, "We have missed some things, and I believe they are vital. We have not yet visited the manor house, Etran's Hill, and we should check that out. More significantly, I've just remembered something. When we talked to the mayor about the Plaguestone, he told us about the witch, Silwyth, who was blamed for the plague. Silwyth had a daughter, named Vilree. I bet she's our "V" from the note. If the town turned on her mother, blamed her for their suffering, she'd have reason to be angry. I suspect she's hiding out at Etran's Hill and planning something awful, some kind of revenge, that involves that corpse blood."

"I could be wrong, but I've got a strong hunch about this and we should check it out," he continues, beginning to walk back towards town. "I'd prefer to go there now, but it would mean getting there in the dark. What do the rest of you think?"

The party puts their heads together, but no one seems to be able to connect the dots.

Making a command decision. Unless you specifically want to circumvent the town to get to the hill, you'll pass through.

After a long day the smell of roasted turnip seems welcomed to the party, not just Kaleb. The setting sun gives the town a beautiful, but melancholy look. The Feedmill looks fairly active, but you see next to no activity anywhere else.

The party ducks into the Feedmill for a meal. Almost immediately Tamli approaches you. "Where have you been all day? You look like you've been to a Chelish Opera. What happened?" She immediately steals chairs from another table to give you privacy.

For those with a keen eye, Krent is practically passed out in the adjacent corner.

"But we're hot on the trail..." Penryn objects as everyone begins to head into the Feedmill. Recognizing that he can't convince a bunch of halflings not to eat a hot meal, and perhaps caving a little to the rumblings of his own stomach, he sighs and joins the group at the table.

"We've been following some leads, Tamli," Penryn offers, "some of them quite promising, but I'd rather not say anything until we're sure. And while we're here, I'd like to have a chat with that Krent fellow before he's gone completely unconscious - he's been impossible to find until now."

Pushing aside a bowl of turnips in order to pick up a hearty bowl of stew on the table, he takes a few bites and stares at Krent. Picking up his bowl, he then carries it over to Krent's table, waving the others along to join him. Setting down his bowl, he says to Krent, "Pardon me, but my friends and I have been looking for you for quite a while. The night that Bort was poisoned, in this very room, you vanished during the chaos. Can I ask where you went, or if you noticed anything that night?"

Use Take the Case to get a +1 circumstance bonus to investigate Krent.

DM - does On the Scene tell me anything here, or did the info about Krent already cover that? (If so, you're a quick study in new rules!)

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

Krent IS the On the Scene clue.

Tamli is keen to hear what happened in the caves underneath Hallod’s home. "Please, come right back. We've got a reward. We INSIST that you take it if you've got answers. Hurry back."

Krent immediately locks eyes with Penryn. His expression is one of panic, wide and bloodshot panic. “Talmore, my old friend. You have to help me. I think his minions have followed us here. I seen ’em. They’re coming!” He then promptly passes out.

Blodgett regards the drunken Krent with some disdain. Scrawny, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life.

He resumes playing with the letters in Hallod and Eallom's name trying to find some way to implicate the farmer in all of this.

"Whose minions?" Penryn asks Krent firmly. It could just be the drink talking, or maybe he saw something that Vilree created with that corpse blood, whatever that might be. Wish Krent's head weren't so potted, we could find out. "Did you see something here in Plaguestone that reminded you of Lastwall? It might not be that you're mad, whatever it was might really be here!"

He disregards Tamli for the moment, as she only wants information, and has none to provide to further the investigation.

More than a little frustrated at his inability to get any answers out of Krent, and increasingly annoyed at Tamli’s impatience, Penny picks up a pitcher of water from an adjacent table and dumps it on Krent’s head before saying, ”Snap out of it, man! I’m not mad at you, no one is mad at you we just want to know about the night Bort died.“ He pauses briefly in thought, then adds, ”And where do you sleep?“

As Krent gets his wits together - or fails to do so - Penryn turns to Tamli and says quietly, ”A little patience, please. I’ve told you we have leads but not answers, but we may get answers soon. Let me see if we can learn anything from this poor sot, then we’re off to pursue those leads and we’ll let you know what we learn.“

He turns to Jasper and says, ”As much as it pains me to say it, cousin, I think you may know more about this sort of thing than I do. Any ideas what might be wrong with him or how to fix it? I’ve got a hunch he’s important in this whole mess, maybe a key to what Vilree is up to, but I don’t know how to get it out of him.“

He lays a hand on Krent's arm and says, "We have always, uh, had each other's backs, right? You tell me what you saw and where, and we'll get it sorted."
