The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Welcome!

I always do my best to run a friendly game. I want people to have fun and everyone to be able to laugh when something crazy happens.

I really want everyone to be able to post at least once a day, preferably more. If you are going to be away from the game for a short period (such as attending a convention, on a short vacation, or needing to do some business travel), I would ask that you please post here so everyone involved knows.

Character Profiles

Please have a profile header displaying a brief overview of your character's current status. As PF2 is a new system, we will need to experiment a little bit to figure out what works best. It should include your AC, Saving Throws, Perception, and expendable daily resources.

In the character profile, please include a complete stat block. You may put it under a spoiler if you wish, but if you do please put it under a single spoiler. I do not want it split across multiple spoilers.

If you have your character sheet on a different site, please have a link to it in your character’s headers. This allows me to pull it up from any post by the character, rather than having to go to the profile and from there to the external sheet.

You can look in the PbP GM Kit for pregenerated characters done in BB Code and use those as examples. Hopefully they will get the standard pregenerated characters for PF2 up once they become available. If you want to volunteer to help with this, I can find out who you should contact

Botting

Botting is when someone else makes a roll or otherwise does something on behalf of your character. Bot is short for robot.

Please include instructions in your profile and a general tactics in case someone else needs to bot your character. I highly recommend this include the dice expressions used for common actions. It is alright if you put this in a separate spoiler from the stat block, but once again please don't split it over multiple spoilers.

If there are resources you don’t mind being used up by botting, please say so. If there are resources you never want someone using, it is alright to say that as well.

If it makes you more comfortable, you could specify who you want to run your character when you can’t post.

If your character has any abilities that interrupt play, I ask that you have something in your Botting instructions about when you want this used. Usually it would be Reaction [R] that changes the result of the triggering action. The reason is that it can really slow down a PbP if you need to serialize actions between multiple people.

Once we get the rules, we can figure out what could cause these sort of problems together.

In my experience, creating a bot structure can help with your own posts as well. Assuming you put complete dice expressions in the botting directions, it makes it easy to cut and paste.

Initiative in PbP

I will roll all Initiative checks for PCs and NPCs, sort them, and organize them into blocks. I will bold the names of characters that should act. I will take the NPC actions in order and reserve the right to delay an NPC in order to make them act with a group of other NPCs.

When it is your turn to act, please post. Do not wait for someone else to post just because they had a higher Initiative. If you know what you want to do but want to wait for someone else’s action to go off first, just say that.

Here is an example of how you could post before another player but have it go off after another player:

Quote:

Sir Cumference waits for the elven archer Mister Oakleaf to get done firing his arrow before charging the Wily Snark.

Attack with Pointy Stick: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Piercing Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

I (and most other PbP GMs) do grouped Initiative in order to keep the adventure moving. In PbP people will have different posting schedules and often live in different time zones, Waiting for posts in order could make a single round of combat take days to resolve.

Within the rules, it is as if everyone within the same Initiative block delayed until they could post.

Chronicle information

In order to be able to generate a PFS chronicle, I ask that each character please provide me the following information:

Player name:
Character name:
OPF and character #:
Faction:
Day Job roll (or a note that you have no day job):

Rules Questions

If there are rules questions, please post them in the discussion thread rather than interrupting the gameplay thread with rules debates.

In closing

We will be discovering the PF2 Rules together. I expect to need to adjust things as we go.

Come join me for a fun game!

Anybody have any character concepts yet? I have too many and no idea where to start.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I have quite a couple of rough concepts floating about, and I usually get inspired by reading a new rulebook as well. So I should have more characters than I'm able to play in short time. :)

MY first character (the one for this game) is mostly settled already. It'll be a Varisian barbarian (draconic totem), intent on multiclassing to sorcerer (draconic bloodline). She'll be a relative of a PFS1 character of mine, who was a Mutagenic Mauler.

Short background:
Several cousins of the Varisian Yolescu family run an alchemical emporium. A few of them came up with the plan to harness exotic energies from animals, beasts and outsiders and capture them in mutagens. One of their more naive family members was sent to the Pathfinder Society (1st edition) as a guinea pig, to field test the effects of the mutagen under various conditions. At first it worked wonders, but eventually the effects started triggering on their own. (He multiclassed into bloodrager at this point).

My new character for PFS2 had only a minor role in the operation, probably as a shady merchant acquiring items and beasts to use as the basis for new mutagens. Eventually, she acquired a pint of silver dragon blood. Feeling proud of her acquisition, she wanted to be the first to test its effects. They were profound, and not what she had expected, at all. She took on not just physical characteristics of a silver dragon, but mental and moral as well. And some of those traits stuck around, permanently. She realized the immoral nature of the whole operation (and her part in it) and confronted her cousins. There, she discovered a newfound dragon temper as well. After this falling out, she traveled to Absalom to make amends to her other cousin, the guinea pig. She stayed in Absalom and joined the Pathfinder Society as well, figuring it was the best way to find out more about what had happened to her, about dragons in general, and possibly even to meet a dragon during her missions.

Hi folks, Iff here. I've been reading the PF2 rules and have my character mostly built. It turned out as a monk instead of a barbarian, but still with the idea to multiclass into sorcerer at level 2.

I still have some things to do:
- Figure out which languages are legal for the Multilingual feat. (or I might drop the feat for something else, in the meantime).
- Complete equipment, calculate Bulk and left-over money.
- Include a stat line.
- Include botting instructions.

Warren here :) I have't done PBP in a long while so I am busy knocking the rust off. I was at Gencon so got some playtime in (Absalom initiation and Escape the Grave). Character is Max - Human Evoker.

I'll be working on getting my profile and everything set up.

Back from Gen Con and finally at my desk. I had fun running PFS(2), mostly 1-03 though I did run this scenario once at the very end while totally brain dead.

So, we have a monk and a wizard. My thoughts at the moment are trending toward Rogue, Bard, or Cleric though I am open to other options. I will likely start with GM credit from 1-01.

For planning purposes - I will be attending a couple of conventions during PbP Gameday VIII and may be slow to post during those times.
Pacificon - 30 Aug-02 Sep
Skaalcon - 19 Sep-23 Sep (including travel)
Big Bad Con - 10-13 Oct (possible but undecided)

I am looking forward to playing with all of you and bringing PFS(2) to Play by Post.

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

I will likely be taking a break during SkalCon myself.

In case you haven't seen it yet, here is the new Guide for PF2. It includes some interesting legacy backgrounds and information on Pathfinder Training vs Field Commissioned Agents.

Envoy's Alliance

LG female human (Versatile) Investigator 2 | HP 24/24 | AC 18 (19 with Shield) | F +4, R +8 W +6 | Perc +6, Stealth +6 | speed 25 | Hero Point: 1 | Active conditons: -

I believe I've finished Helène, including all gear and botting instructions. Let me know if anything is unclear, or seems off.

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Please list the class feat as Dragon Stance. I realize the Attack is a leg sweep called Dragon Tail, but the feat Name is Dragon Stance. The only other thing I see in a quick read through is a typo for thieves tools.

Please note that Alchemist Fire is a martial weapon, so you will be non-proficient with it.

I’m guessing you are planning to take a Dedication at second level. I’m curious, which one do you plan to take? My guess based on the Charisma would be Sorcerer or Bard, most likely Sorcerer with Draconic bloodline,

The Botting instructions look good but how shall we handle the second attack before you know the enemy AC?

In PF1, I wouldn’t announce enemy ACs. Given the way criticals work and strategies like yours, I may have to rethink that stance for PF2 PbP.

Envoy's Alliance

LG female human (Versatile) Investigator 2 | HP 24/24 | AC 18 (19 with Shield) | F +4, R +8 W +6 | Perc +6, Stealth +6 | speed 25 | Hero Point: 1 | Active conditons: -

Thanks for the check.
- I've corrected the feat listing and typo.
- Good point on the Alchemist's fire, I hadn't realized that. I'll keep it in mind. The difference between Trained and Untrained is still reasonable at level 1, or I might pass it to one of the martials to throw. Of course, the scenario briefing might also give me some reason to swap. We don't have to choose until that point, I gathered.
- Indeed, I plan to multiclass into Draconic sorcerer at level 2.

The point about the botting instructions needs some further discussion, I think. I had meant the entire block to be pasted as is. I would roll the dice for both both versions of the second attack, and while interpreting the result of my actions you'd pick the one that applied. If that doesn't complicate things too much for you...

Example gameplay post wrote:

Action 1

Stride, as indicated on the map.

Action 2
Flurry of blows, attack the troll. First attack is a dragon tail strike, second is with an unarmed attack dependent on whether the first hits.
Flurry attack 1, Dragon tail Strike: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

On success with attack 1: Flurry, Fist attack -MAP: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 6 - 4 = 22
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
on failure with attack 1: Flurry, Dragon Tail -MAP +backswing: 1d20 + 6 - 5 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 6 - 5 + 1 = 21
Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

etc.

I could see the same for weapons with the fatal property. For example:

Example gameplay post wrote:

Attack with greatpick: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

Damage on hit: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Damage on crit, fatal: 1d12 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 (x2)

This way, we don't have to know the AC. It would spoil thing for me personally, to know that kind of information about enemies in advance.

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

Pasting the whole thing in seems a reasonable way to handle it.

Still going to think on this, and may try it both ways if there are enough combats. Since this will be my first PbP in PF2, I intend to do some experimentation to find what works best for me,

Does anyone have a Reaction that I should be aware of?

Max Cosgrave - Male Human (versatile) Wizard(Evoker)1 HP16/16, AC 15, F+7 / R+5 / W+6 |Perc. +4 Stealth+5 Speed 25|

OK I think I am all set up. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. As far as reactions, I think the only one that may come up for me is the Shield Block if shield is up.

Hello again, team.

Sorry I have been mostly offline for the last week or so. It seems that GMing in-person at conventions every two weeks (as I have done the last few months) is not sustainable and I dropped a few things along the way.

I have two characters almost ready to go. Would you prefer a bard or a cleric join your party?

Numbat1, I'm good with either. I'll have limited healing capability with Lay on Hands so possibly the cleric might be better.

I'd be fine with either. However, if you have no preference, I'll second the suggestion for cleric.

Sorry to inform all of you that I just received notification that the start of PbP Gameday VIII is being delayed by two weeks. The new dates for Gameday are Sept 9, 2019 to Nov 17, 2019. You can read the official announcement here.

The reason for the delay is that most of the GMs have not received their scenario support. Although I have the scenario, in order to qualify for convention support we must wait until the official date before I can officially start it.

I would ask that those who haven’t done so yet please create profiles for your characters.

In case some of you are not aware, here is the PF2 Guide to Organized Play. There is some interesting things in the document, including Pathfinder Training vs Field Commissioned Agent having game mechanical effects. Basically if you go through the training (even if field commissioned) you have additional responsibilities but can draw on the society for some resources. Skipping the training allows you to have longer downtime.

Alright, I have created a slide show, link at the top of the page and in my header. If you choose the wrong link, you will be brought to the SFS adventure I inherited.

Mithrilpunk, we are going to want to get you an Avatar. Our Mysterious Benefactor needs one too, but they have been around the boards and I expect they already know how to do it.

Here is my attempt at explaining how to do this:

On "My Account" select the "Organized Play" menu item.
It should bring you to a sign in page, and then a summary page that lists all of you organized play characters. At the bottom of that will be links so you can create more characters for any of the campaigns.

Edit the one for "347726 - 2001". If you don't have one for that number, use the "Register a new Pathfinder Society (2nd Edition) character" so one is made.

Change the character name to Max Cosgrave.
Select a default faction, Grand Archive based on the information you provided. If you've changed your mind that is fine, just please have the information I will use for chronicles match the selection here.

Select an Avatar. It will bring up a whole set of pages with avatars to choose from. Once you've selected one it will bring you back to the Edit Profile page.

Submit changes.

That will give the very basics.

When you post, select Max Cosgrave for the "Post As" alias.

Hopefully you can make sense of the above. If you have problems, ask here and we will do our best to help you figure it out.

Botting instructions in place. That was more work than I was really expecting. Having both spells and melee (plus MAP) really added up. I just realised that I didn't add MAP to any spell attacks, though I think that will rarely come into play so I may leave it for now.

GM Bret - please check these meet your requirements and I would truly appreciate any suggestions for improvement. Thanks.

Also, I purchased an additional holy symbol with the intent to attach it inside the shield to have my focus always available. Does this meet with your approval?

@Tasaria The Botting information looks great, although I question if you would ever use a third attack.

Thanks for doing all the skills. It doesn’t look like you have any reactions.

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

@Max
Might want to put the actual dice expressions in your Botting instructions, allow for cut and paste,

Since you are often going to recall knowledge, you probably want dice expressions for the skills that allow you to identify creatures.

Could you please copy your AC and such (basically the three lines below your race) into the Gender, Race and Class lines? That will cause them to appear with each post.

The Festering Blot | Tarnbreaker’s Trail

@Everyone,

This is a horror adventure.

The scenario talks about how to play it more light hearted or darker. I need to know if anyone would be set off by descriptions of bugs (especially mosquitoes) and how you would prefer the adventure be run.

I am willing to go full Scooby-Doo if that is what the group wants, but this being a public forum there is a limit on how dark it can go.

Yeah, no reactions for this poor deprived cleric.

I am good with anywhere from light to moderate horror. I am not sure that PbP lends itself to truly dark and creepy horror anyway. (Neither does loud, well-lit convention rooms.)

I'm okay with horror theme, although needlessly graphic violence isn't really my thing. I'm guessing from the description this is more the 'horror atmosphere' type scenario, rather than full on graphic slasher horror.

The official start of Gameday is in about 24 hours.

If people want to make a post introducing their characters, the adventure will start in Tymon which is a city in the River Kingdoms.
